It was one of those days. The sun had risen, a perfect, glowing orb of fire and light, and Andraste and awoken with the dawn. There was nothing quite like it, the feeling of the first gentle fingers of light setting her golden fur on fire so that it glinted like hot lava and the caress of the early-morning breeze on her face. She closed her eyes contentedly every time the wind blew across her and ruffled her fur.

It was one of thosed days that seemed to click. Everything had seemed to fall perfectly into place from the moment she had opened her sky blue eyes, and everything after that had continued to flow like clockwork. It was beautiful.

There was an extra spring in her step as she walked from the den to find food, wondering if any had been delivered yet. It felt to her like it would have been. On a day like this, everything would be perfect, and she could relish the moments to her heart's content.

Little did she know.

Kahd hated mornings with a passion. There was nothing good about them in his opinion. Perfectly good sleep was disturbed by a bright band of light shining into his eyes, then instead of being able to roll back over and go to sleep, the big male remembered it was his day to do patrols.

To say his day had gone downhill from there was a bit of an understatement. There was unrest in the pride, ushujaa's gossiping about the ruling class instead of working...honestly! Their job was to work, not wonder what the higher ups were doing!

Grumbling faintly under his breath when another arrived to relieve him of his patrol, Kahd decided that a late breakfast was in order..and gods help them if they hadn't brought food yet!

She perked up as another lion suddenly ambled into view, headed in presumably the same direction. Oh, good. She could feel things clicking into place once again. If he was headed to find food too, that must mean that the hunters had delivered it. A contented thrum went through her as she lengthened her stride to catch up.

"Excuse me," she called out as she got within earshot, suddenly more eager to get to the food than before. She hadn't realized just how hungry she really was, and now that she had, little else was on her mind. "Do you know if they've brought the food yet? You're headed the same way as me, so I'm assuming maybe they have, or maybe you at least know something. It's a little late to be headed for breakfast anyway, so I'm guessing you're not going there just for fun."

Kahd had gone a few more steps before he realized someone was talking to him. What in the world was the female blathering about?? Pausing mid step, he turned his head to actually look at who was addressing him. Well hello nurse! Sure she was a little young but that had never stopped him from admiring a good looking female.

"Well hello there sweetness. What brings a pretty little thing like you out here?" Had he bothered to listen to her words he would know, but that would require actually considering someone else.

A subtle shift in his stance made him seem quiet a bit larger than he actually was as he adopted a cheeky smile. "Coming to see how the big boys keep you all safe?"

Her bright morning smile transformed into a mild frown. What business was it of his what she was doing here? And how hard was it to see that she was one of the Ushujaa? Why else would she be here? She was poised on the verge of shaking of his question and getting to the point - the food - when he spoke again.

"Why would I-" She paused. Big boys? Keep her safe? Somehow, it was starting to sound strangely like deja-vu. And who was this idiot, who thought that she needed protecting? Indeed, she was one of the most accomplished new recruits to join the Ushujaa tribe, that she was sure of, and the thought that she needed some thickheaded lion to help her almost made her laugh.

"I don't need protecting, but thank you for offering nonetheless," she said with a dry smile. It was only polite, after all. It could almost have been taken as a sweet gesture, if he hadn't had that... tone about him. "Listen, do you know where the food is, or not?"

Oh good gods, not another of those 'I'm strong I can do it myself' females. He sighed shaking his head, really those damn nanny's had ruined a whole generation of females with that crap. It's not to say that he didn't like females, hell he loved them! But something was just unnatural about lioness wanting to act like one of the boys.

When she asked about food, Kahd arched a brow with a frown. "Well didn't you bring it?" Why would she be asking him about the food -she- should have brought. Really, youngsters these days had no sense it seemed.

She was almost tempted to look down and make sure that her muscle tone hadn't gone down. Clearly, she was much bigger than a regular lioness and most of the huntresses and nannies, and likely in better form. She made sure of it, both to help her develop her fighting prowess and to be prepared, just in case any emergencies happened. It was easier to react.

"Why, may I ask, would I have brought the food?" She asked, beginning to get irritated. Seriously, was he that brainless? It didn't take a genius to connect the dots and figure out that she was a warrior. Maybe he just didn't want to. "What, you expect me to go all the way back into the pridelands to ask the hunters if they've got food, and then drag it all the way back so the rest of you can stuff your faces? Hah!" She snorted.

"As if I don't also have patrols and guard duty and training to do. Honestly, you lions think that just because we're new here, everything becomes our responsibility. Well if you want food so bad, why don't you go down and drag it back up yourself!" She turned, completely ready to brush past him and stalk back to her den in an act of defiance. Already, she had lost her appetite thanks to this big gray lug.

Kahd could only stare at the female in disbelief as she snapped at him. Gods she -was- one of those warrior females, the ones that seem to think they were as good as the males. Females were good for many, many things but when it came to fighting... He snorted rudely shaking his head. What a waste of a good female.

"What is it with you damn females?" he grumbled half under his breath, half out loud not really caring if she heard. Of course if he had half a brain he would have kept his mouth shut, but the big male had often shown that he was more brawn than brains.

"It's got not a damn thing to do with you being new! You are a female and could get hurt out here. You should be in the safety zones looking after the little spawn things or hunting not out here trying to prove some damn point."

"Lookit, what you think is proper for most females, probably doesn't sit so proper for me, so if you think I'm going to just turn around and join the nanny squad, you'd better think twice." She said with a small accompanying growl.

"If I think I'm safe enough out here, then maybe I am, huh? Maybe, oh I don't know, I can actually take care of myself? It's not like I'm a cub, you know," she shook her head, before adding in an undertone. "Not that being a cub made it a difference.

"And it's not like I'm particularly small, you know. I'm bigger than my sisters. Almost as big as you too. Just watch me outgrow you." She huffed.

Kahd wanted to bang his head against the rocks....or maybe he wants to bang her head on the rocks..no defiantly his own. No decent male would ever strike a female unless she needed it. It was amazing what a swat on the rump could do from time to time, but he was getting distracted again.

"Might as well be a cub you little bug." He grumbled faintly, tail lashing the air behind him. Why couldn't these females just know their places?

When she threatened to grow bigger than him, Kahd couldn't hold back his laughter. "You?! Yeah right!" Everyone knew females weren't as big or strong as males, that was why they needed to be protected and cuddled.

"What?" She burst out, pulling her lip back in a snarl. He was really pushing it now. "Are you kidding me? Bugs are insignificant playthings for cubs! I could squish a bug with my tail! Do you even know anything?!

"I'm not a-"

Wait.

"...What did you call me?"

Orange eyes blinked as he tilted his head. "Cub? Bug? Both fit. You are a short, stocky little thing that doesn't know her place or what she -should- be doing. You are as annoying as a bug."

He didn't really like speaking to females that like, but this young girl was starting to get on his last nerve! Much like that cu......He scowled as his brain did a sudden 360. Had it really been that long since the last time she annoyed him?

"Oh good Gods...it's the Bug." He groaned in disgust.

"It's you!" She growled, already mentally berating herself for not having realized much, much earlier. How could she ever have missed it? The talk about the "big boys," the suggestion to become a nanny, the bug... in hindsight, it had now all become so clear to her. So it was him again, the lion from her childhood, the one and the same.

"Hey, watch it," she warned, her aqua eyes narrowing both in recognition and in irritation. "Just because I'm a lioness doesn't mean I can't do this just as well as you, if not better. Why don't you just understand that? Isn't it a simple enough concept? Is it really that hard to consider that you might be wrong for once?"

It had been a while, indeed, but now that the fur had started to fly again, it seemed to come naturally, as if this was always how it was intended to be between the two of them.

"Point of fact you can't Bug." He snorted faintly shaking his head. What was it with these females?! "It is a simple fact, though it seems to much for your little brain to understand so let me explain it for you simply."

He narrowed his orange eyes as he regarded her. "The gods built females smaller for a reason Bug, just as they made us males bigger and stronger for a reason."

Didn't they know they upset the natural order of things by trying to take on the male's job? If all these screwy females changed...who would take care of the cubs?

"Well, if that's what you think, then the gods made me too, and they made me to do your 'males' job'. Maybe they want change," she scoffed, eyes narrowed to match his. "Because they realized that you weren't doing a good enough job."

He so infuriated her that the train of thought had become entirely jumbled inside her head. A dozen different things ran through her mind at once, none of them exactly coherent, and all of them enough to make her sputter with rage.

"Why is it so hard for you to imagine that maybe we weren't all made with just one purpose in mind, huh?" She added vehemently. "It's not that much of a stretch of the imagination. Though... it doesn't take much more than a second's look at you to realize that you lack the creative brain cells to make such a judgement."

She felt so inclined to revert to the ways of a child and stick her tongue out at him. But that, perhaps, would only have strengthened his argument.
