Post here things you find on "informational" websites that make you wince, grind your teeth, or swear your undying vengeance.

Check this out, man. I googled "Freya moon goddess" to see what came up and dude, had I been drinking I would have spit all over my keyboard.

wicca-chat.com
Freya: Scandinavian - Moon Goddess. Consort of Odin and Chief of The Valkyries.

Consort of Odinn? Consort? of Odinn??
.....
I mean, even calling Frigg "consort" is a bit ******** much.

Another site that called Freyja a "moon goddess" cited the Farrars so now I have to go and dig their book out to check whether I should be decrying their ignorance or not.

~~~
Note: this is not the place to quote comments made on forums. Rather it's specifically to post things you find on websites that purport to be teaching "Wicca", Paganism or otherwise. Keep forum quotes to a minimum, although the occasional totally awful one is ok. wink
Oh geez. This would take me days. The intarweb is really really bad about Wicca.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Wicca.com drives me bonkers, in its' entirety. Wicca isn't celtic. Paganism is automagically witchcraft, or Celtic. Witchcraft isn't always Pagan.
Only two of the 'council' that run a site that basically SELLS WICCA, claim to be Wiccan. They are not initiates of any tradition, so it's not even a valid claim. There's no actual Wicca at the site....so the URL is more than a bit misleading.
You have the gamut - really stupid generalizations, bad research, cultural misappropriation - it's New-Age wannaWicca blender spirituality. I wish the site had died when its' original owner and maintainer passed on - it at least could have faded away and let something more valid take its' place. Instead now it's become a shrine of misinformation, in his memory. Blargh.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Witchvox? Pretty craptacular, since they have no standard set for the articles they accept - it's about as reliable as Wikipedia. I actually have an entire group of posts on my LJ called "WTF,
Witchvox?".
Like:
This post came from this article.
There are no Adult Goths??
Reality-Challenged? No, I just forgot my dice so we played free-form.
Made-up elemental system? Check! $RW worship? Check! Facepalm? Check! (I made my own commentary here.)
I'll stop now, but Jeebus! This is sadly not an unusual occurence for Witchvox - my own collection of commentary on these things goes back to 2005.
---------------------------------------------
http://www.joellessacredgrove.com/ -
this site's been around since I first got online in the mid-90's, and it's still total garbage. Heavy on the 'Wicca is Celtic' nonsense, and a lot of the usual eclectic neo-pagan stuff, with Wicca slapped on it as a mislabel.
I particularily 'love' her Traditions page where she talks about the Frosts, and that somehow it's possible for a person to be BTW without lineage to Gardner. But hey, she also thinks Bucky's Big Blue Book o' Wicca is a good source.
I would personally like to slap 'Joelle', hard across the face, for the sheer number of people she's misled and misdirected.
Combine the fact that early in the Intarweb's boom, Wicca.com and this site were the two largest, and most frequented websites available...you can understand why there's so much crap floating around out there. Those sites are probably responsible for transporting all the BS info from a lot of crap books, directly online for further dissemination.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Like I said, I could probably be here all day.
There are probably going to be a lot of people who disagree with me but my choice is
http://www.silverravenwolf.com/
I am not a fan of her, I think she writes a lot of nonsense just so she can sell her books. She seems to be all about the lighter side of things only and she speaks poorly of other religions. Which is not what we are here to do. It's not which religion is the true one and only, it's about knowledge and what we believe.
The consensus among those I've spoken to about Wuitchvox is that it's good for making connections,
and that's all it's good for.
I rarely go to pagan websites these days,
in part because there are so many crappy ones.
I agree about the witchvox part. All I have ever used it for is to look for local pagans. I don't think I have ever read an article on there.
JANET AND STEWART FARRAR. YOU HAVE BEEN MEASURED AND FOUND WANTING.
Crime the First: Listing, in their Giant List of Goddesses, Frigg and Freyja as the same deity. They get around this by saying "they appear to ahve been the same deity to start out with, became two and then later re-merged". I'm sorry but that's just ******** lazy. You have a bazillion different goddesses here. Was it so ******** hard to make two separate entries - given how distinct these goddesses are for so many people - and then mention in each "may be the same goddess as...."?
Crime the Second: "Wife and sister of Odin". Now, Aes families are apparently fairly complicated, and I have trouble keeping them straight. But this is not something I have ever come across before. At the least they don't share a father.
Crime the Third: "Originally a Moon goddess". AND THERE IT IS. Bollocks to this "originally". I DEMAND SOURCES.
Crime the Fourth: Slightly unrelated.... apparently "The Asynjor" are "Female attendants of Frigg". OH THAT'S RIGHT, I forgot how Sigyn was one of Frigg's Handmaidens.
Seriously, Janet, baby, if you're going to write an encyclopaedia, at least check your ******** facts. If you can't be bothered doing that? DON'T WRITE ONE. Seriously, the meaning of "Asynjor" should be apparent from the mere construction of the word.
Heh. To be honest, I tended to skim their books when they ventured into soft polythiestic territory. I never had much use for it.
I look at where Janet ended up, in eclectic neo-pagan non-Wicca territory, after starting out where she did....and I shake my head, because it's like she backslid. And looking at some of her early writing, that's a scary concept. I realize that the Craft in the 60's and 70's was a different beast, than now, but still.
I should ask my high priestess about the Farrars. She knew them personally.
Yeah, it's so weird.... their books on Wicca were so good (y'know, from an outsider's perspective). It's such a shame the rest of their stuff is such bollocks. And this "progressive witchcraft"... I dunno... I don't know much about it but it weirds me out to see one of the Wica into that sort of thing.
Agreed, on both points.
Would the Correllian Wicca website count as a a "WTF are these people talking about???" site?
