I'm thinking that the infection would get to the animals too though they would be less effected due to their agility and out of the way homes. If it were a disease it may not me contractible by animals or it may be too powerful for them and just kill them off. In any case, keep an eye out for them. They could be carrying even if they aren't infected. That even goes for your pets. It may be sad but at least you could stay safe and use them for food.

John has a point, but it should also be noted that if the infection was bacterial/viral, scavenger/carnivorous animals could quite possibly be infected by ingesting infected flesh (like in Resident Evil Extinction).

they say that 3 things might happen. 1. the virus just kills them at first contact. 2. the infected eat them. or 3. and this is more real. that the animals already saw this coming and they got out of town a little before it happens. mostly is stated that animals have a sense about it.

It really depends on what kind of a virus it is, how it mutates, et cetera. If its a parasite, like Resident Evil 4, then it would seem that most animals could be infected. There are, of course, cases where illness passes from one creature to another like Avian Flu and SARS or West Nile, but those are kind of in the minority, and as far as I know, only one kind of animal passed it onto humans. Civet Cats, which were the cause of SARS, didn't give the virus to dogs, for instance. Animals might not be susceptible to the zombie virus, even if they did ingest infected flesh. So it is possible, but it really depends on a lot of factors... Rabies, which, to me, is the closest real-life example of a zombie-like virus, can be passed to any mammal as far as I know. I have no idea about reptiles, however. But obviously, I'm really far from an authority on any of this. Have any of you ever heard about the parasite that turns ants into "zombies"? V interesting article. Here's a load of bits about "zombie" animals... though all are infected by parasites. I find all of these articles very disturbing. "Some species of phorid fly attack and then lay eggs in the body of a fire ant. The eggs hatch, and the larva make its way to the ant’s head where it eats it from the inside out. The ant does not immediately die, but will walk around with no direction or purpose once its brains are gone. When the larva matures, it causes the ant’s head to fall off so it can emerge as an adult fly."

Here's another article on the same thing, but this one has a video: http://neurophilosophy.wordpress.com/2006/11/20/brainwashed-by-a-parasite/ This one talks about some of the other parasites in the other article you posted too.

Well, in my case...
he virus is Left 4 Dead was a mutated strain of the rabies virus. Considering that Rabies originates from animals and animals can be infected with it, then yes, it is VERY possible that a rage virus would effect animals.
However. Other kinds of zombie outbreaks, such as the "Rising from the dead" ordeal I think are less likely. Animals have weaker bodies (at least most of them do) and they decay faster because they are smaller. In the wild there are also scavengers like vultures or hyenas that would still eat the living dead's flesh, even if they were, well, living.
That zombie bear reminded me of Condemned 2, the giant rabies bear in that snow lodge... Uuuuugh. So creepy.
