Kiri had been just aimlessly traveling about. Such was the carefree life of a rogue. No prides, no packs.. Noone to tell you where to go or what to do. No responsibilities.. Just the wind on your back and the hunger in your belly that drove a lioness to this whim or another.
She had been just walking in no direction in particular when she thought perhaps she might take a break at the next watering hole. She knew it had to be close by. She hadn't seen one for a while. At least, she hoped one was coming up. She felt rather thirsty.

Amira was alone. She was always alone, save for blips in her life where others suddenly appeared. But they only stayed for a moment, never much longer, and they couldn't ever fill the void that her sister left behind. The worst thing about being abandoned, Amira thought, was that you were alone far too much. It gave her way too much time to think about her failures as a lioness.
She drug her feet through the plains, dust dirtying her paws, but she didn't even put forth the effort to lift them properly. What was the use? Who would see them, except for her? Did it really matter what she did, or who she was, if there wasn't anyone around to share her life with? "Being alone really stinks..." she muttered, kicking at a loose stone with her back paw.
The rock made a splashing sound as it struck the earth. "Wait...was that water?!" she exclaimed, turning towards the sound. Her eyes wide, she realized that she had been traveling beside a riverbank without even realizing it. "That's what I get for walking with my head down," she said with a frown. Momentarily comforted by the presence of life-giving water, she walked to the edge and bent her neck, lapping up her fill of the liquid.

Kiri finally arrived at the waters edge. That last little leg of the journey here ended up feeling longer than she had gauged it was in distance. She gave a slight "tsk" whisper to herself, chiding her brain for not performing better. Of course, it could be hard to calculate these things properly under the savanna sun.
But, now the sun was finally starting to set. It reminded her why recently she had been trying to restart her body's internal clock to living a more nocturnal life. Rogue travel and hunting were sometimes easier at night. It was easier to do things under a cloak of darkness and coolness when it was just yourself and not a whole pride to help feed you.
As she had lapped the water into her mouth, she gave a refreshed sigh. How delightful! It did taste worth the walk. OH! But, what was that sound.. She twisted an ear around. Was that.. the sound of someone else at the water?
Her fur stiffened as she debated to herself that maybe she should investigate. What if it were some foolish meal.. that had brought itself to her.. She crouched low to the ground and started to sneak up on the direction of that sound.

Amira finished drinking, and leaned back from the river, water dripping off of her muzzle. She yawned, stretching out her back muscles which were sore from long travel. She barely heard the lioness approach, and didn't recognize the sound as threatening. She merely assumed it was some small creature in the grass. Besides, it was hard to pick out the shapes of anything in the dusky twilight beginning to fall over the horizon.
Amira disliked the dark, as she was too poor a hunter to appreciate it's cloaking advantages. She squinted into the grass, trying to discern what was approaching. She expected a prairie dog or a meerkat, some type of hare or wild dog at most. She slunk down into a crouch, hoping that if it was something that might be dinner, she could manage to catch it. She settled down to wait, tail twitching in anticipation.
