Is it so hard to find an actress that actually looks intimidating?? Is it so hard to find an actress who isn't a freaking cougar?? Is it so hard to dye her hair???
Actually, it is pretty hard to dye her hair. Considering how dark it is, they'd have to go through a long and arduous process of dying it a little, waiting three months, dying it some more, and waiting three more months, so on and so forth until it was blonde. Doing it any other way would end up with the bleach ruining her hair and possibly making it fall out of her head, not to mention it would look horribly fake with her skintone.
And the pen thing; it'd be harder to CGI an enormous sword coming out of a pencap than it would be to show it when he clicks the pen. Think about it. The sword woulde either be growing as it came out and look really lame, or the pencap would be just BAM gone, and look, a sword!
It just looks dumb when you try it irl.
The thing I'm worried about is Grover. I mean, I might be reading the preview wrong, but I always thought the big scary black kid was Beckendorf. I'm kind of wondering if he's still going to be dorky and awkward if he looks like he can rip your face off and use it as toilet paper...
