Maman and Papa were leaving tomorrow, and Elke didn't want to think about it.

See, the neat thing about having an alter ego was that if she didn't want to think about Maman and Papa and Voirrey leaving, she didn't have to. Maman and Papa and Voirrey meant nothing to Virgo. Well, they did mean stuff. But as Virgo, it was... Protect her Princess. Kick some youma butt. Win. Lots of winning. Virgo was not particularly good at winning, but she did all right with protecting the Princess and kicking youma butt.

She had stopped pretending to patrol around two o'clock. There was a watch on her wrist, a slim black thing that looked so out of place it was funny. She sat down on a park bench, legs tucked up under her because gosh, it was cold, wasn't it? This sort of cold ought to be illegal, Virgo thought. It was cold cold.

And she'd missed Christmas. That was what was really bothering her; she'd missed Santa that year. How could she miss Santa? Had Santa known she was alive again? It was probable you had to be alive all year for Santa to come give you presents. Very probable.

"Sigh," articulated Virgo, looking around the park. She didn't actually sigh. She did not feel the sighing right then. She said it, flat out, just like that: "Sigh."

Nealite, on the other hand, had been blessed with what had been, by far, the best Christmas to date. And, if luck would hold out, her future was looking even brighter. She was engaged, happily engaged, even (much to the chagrin of Khaldun, Audrey, and half of the boys enrolled in Hillworth), and was the Queen of the flippin' Negaverse.

Life couldn't get much better than this.

Boots paused in their strutting as eyes landed on the back of a strangely familiar dark haired head. Too familiar.

Nealite had been wandering the park that afternoon, mostly due to the fact that it was apparent that every time she wandered through, she wound up finding a senshi. And she liked finding senshi, it meant yet another chance at grabbing an especially worthy star seed, and she'd be delighted to add such an achievement onto her list of "Why Life ******** Rocks for Ursula Johnson". And, without fail yet again, Nealite was far from disappointed on this excursion.

She had, however, not expected to see a Zodiac of all senshi, on that particular bench. Castor, sure, Castor practically lived on that bench. Alkaid, perhaps, or even one another lesser known senshi that Nea could take pleasure in wailing on. But a Zodiac?

And it being Virgo?

She clutched her mirror tightly, one eyebrow slowly rising as she stood and stared at the girl who seemed completely unaware that she'd been spotted.

"I see you found your way out of Barren Pines, dear."

"Hello," said Virgo, lilting the end of the word. It was a question. She sounded surprised, olive-green eyes wide as she swiveled to look at Nealite. Recognition flashed across her face, and she smiled incredibly brightly. "Oh! Hello, Captain Nealite." She got off the bench and brushed snow off her fuku, then sketched a little curtsey.

In Virgo's fantasy world, the expression on Nealite's face was not an angry look, or a disbelieving look, it was a good look. The kind you see when you didn't expect to see anyone ever again. That was a good thing. "Yeah, but it was mostly the Princess," she explained; "The Princess is brilliant. There was all this light and then the sky was bright, too. That dome was really scary."

Finally! someone she could talk to about Barren Pines. Not like she couldn't talk to Serenade or Grayson, she just didn't want to bother Serenade or Grayson. It was okay to talk to Captain Nealite, though, because Captain Nealite had brought it up first. (Poor Captain Nealite.)

"Have you been okay, Captain?" Virgo: Did Not Do the Research.

Nealite stared at the younger girl, a blank expression on her face.

What in the hell....

"I'm fine. Good. I'm good."

One arm shifted up and her hand settled on her waist. The Captain knew Virgo was special, but she would have assumed the girl would know Nealite was Bad News by this point, the Negaverse agent having made an attempt on her life on more than one occasion.

Lucky for Virgo, Nealite was up for talk of Barren Pines before the inevitable battle the senshi seemed unaware was to come. If only to discuss her once glorious dark bubble, but gaining information on exactly how the little brats had escaped it wouldn't hurt. Virgo, at long last, could prove herself useful before she was killed.

"The Princess did it? But... how? The dome.... it was strong. It had to be strong. I made it that way."

She tilted her head, waiting for a response; when she got it, she perked up, smiling again. "That's good. I'm glad you're doing well!" Definitely not one of the smarter senshi, or at least a more stupidly optimistic one than normally encountered.

Hmmm.

"It was really strong," said Virgo earnestly, "We all passed out when we broke it. All of us, even the humans, had to help. It was really hard." She paused, a lightbulb all but flickering on over her head as the rest of Nealite's statement processed. Virgo's expression fell, and she said, "It was your bubble? I'm so sorry! It was really strong, though, if we hadn't had the Princess we never would have gotten out. You made it really well!"

Well, that whole thing was sort of a buzzkill. Virgo looked pretty uncertain, and pretty sorry for Nealite. "It was a strong bubble," she repeated.

It was at that very moment that Nealite made a startling realization.

Nealite loved Sailor Virgo.

Out of all the senshi she'd fought over the past year, the wins, the losses, the easy and the overpowering... none of them were like Virgo. At all. Virgo was, by far, the most naive, trusting individual that Nealite had ever encountered.

It was almost a shame, really, that she would have to die.

Inwardly preening at the compliment (for Nealite did indeed agree that it had been a terribly strong bubble, and the knowledge it had to take every senshi to conquer it merely added to her vanity), she feigned a shocked expression.

"And your star seed? Is it okay? Don't you know you could damage it that way?!"

Wait, Captain Nealite wasn't mad? She'd kind of expected anger. Or zombies, she wasn't really sure which, well actually she was pretty sure there would have been zombies and probably also lots of blood. Virgo didn't do too well with blood.

The inquiry after her starseed brought a confused look to her face. "What?..." She hadn't learned much about starseeds before kind of getting exploded; she'd become a senshi only three or four months before that incident, after all. Well, okay, she knew that they were important, you needed them, and the Negaverse wanted them. She was supposed to stop people from taking them.

"Starseeds can get damaged?" Virgo looked really surprised, her eyebrows lifting up towards her golden circlet. "Nooo... no one ever told me that. I think the Captain would have told me, but--"

Well, that was Zodiac business. Sort of.

"The Captain would have told me," she repeated, but she didn't sound convinced.

"Oh yes dear, they certainly can be!"

Taking a step forward, one gloved hand moved out to hesitantly rest on the girl's shoulder, giving it a concerned pat. "I'm actually surprised the Captain didn't warn you about it," (Wait, the Zodiacs had a Captain?), "Though... perhaps they just didn't want to scare you with the truth? You are rather innocent, Virgo, darling."

Her hand left the girl's shoulder and she moved to rest on the bench where the girl had been sitting. It wouldn't do any good for her to attack now, not when Virgo obviously had no idea that Nealite's intentions were far from pure. She would win over her trust and then reveal her betrayal, learning any information she could before the younger woman's demise. What was the rush?

"Your star seed is very fragile. It's like a crystal, really. An energy crystal inside of you that keeps you alive. You must be very careful so you don't damage it, and make sure it's kept nice and... clean. Dirty star seeds only lead to cracked star seeds, and there's no way to fix a seed once it's been damaged!"

Virgo knew how hard it could be to care for crystal. Maman had a crystal chandelier in her dining room, and the maids had to clean it pretty often and Maman scolded when they didn't do it right. She smiled at Nealite, and after a moment sat down next to the Negaverse captain, right back where she'd been before, legs crossed under her. Being crystal, she supposed a starseed was in fact pretty fragile. Unless it was thick crystal, which tended to be pretty durable; but it seemed like it would just be intruding on Captain Nealite's time to ask.

"Captain Aries has never not told me stuff because it was scary before," mused Virgo, but then, how would she know?

She desperately wanted Nealite to like her, this much was clear from the admiring look in her olive green eyes. It was even obvious in her tone, which was pleading as she asked, "How can you tell if a starseed is damaged, Captain Nealite?"

She stared at the shorter girl, still rather shocked at how... innocent Virgo was. How in the hell hadn't she been killed already?

"It doesn't sound like your Captain is a very trusting Captain, if she isn't even willing to tell you about caring for your star seed."

The older woman tsked, shaking her head as one hand fell down to cover her chest. Fingers lingered on the edge of her dress, gloved fingers barely touching the soft skin of her chest. She chuckled.

"That's easy, Virgo dear. You have to take it out and look at it! Do you even know where your star seed is?"

Captain was trusting! That was why Virgo got to be the roommate of the Princess. The Princess, as the Captain said, was All; since they no longer had the Surrounding (what was that anyway) they had to take care of the Princess. Virgo loved the Princess...

But what if the Captain wasn't trusting her? What if she just hadn't told Virgo that she was going to ask that Virgo be moved?

"Isn't it... here?" Her gloved hand brushed over her Zodiac doublestar, pressed against it briefly. "But I thought that your starseed had to stay inside you. Aren't they like... souls? And they only get dirty or broken if you do something bad?"
PostPosted: Thu Feb 18, 2010 7:08 am

"Oh don't be silly," she said as she shook her head, waving one hand in the other girl's direction, "Of course you can live without it. There have been plenty of people who have lived after having their star seeds removed."

Which was true... Nealite simply left out the small detail that every human with a removed star seed ended up a vegetable for the rest of their life. Small insignificant detail, really, no need to bother mentioning it.

The hand moved to lay itself gently over the other girl's hand. She wasn't going to force her, no, that might start a fight. And if Nealite could take a star seed without force, she was going to do it. Besides... this was rather fun, in a twisted sort of way.

"You can put it back in right after it's taken out." she reassured the girl, giving the hand a gentle pat, "I have to check mine weekly, since I unfortunately get into quite a few scuffles. But I mean...haven't you ever wanted to see what yours looks like? I bet yours might be cracked, and you don't even know it!"
