Introduction Within the confines of a private room in the tavern sits a quiet, though peculiarly dressed man. His outfit is made of varying hues of browns and tans, complete with a vest of multiple pockets, all of them filled to the brim with gadgets and gizmos of all kinds. He continually strokes his full mustache as he waits, with his bright green eyes staring intently at the door from beneath his bushy eyebrows. "Where are those adventurers I hired..." He grumbles impatiently. This dungeon is for the following characters: Poa Arethos (Leader) Clendyx Van Joust 4 Co Please post your current stats including all bonuses from equipped items. RPing your entrance is not required, but good RP will occasionally get you more rewards depending on how good it really is. You will also need to pick your party leader, so by democratic vote please post your intent by voting in the poll above. In the event of a tie, I will place my vote to break the tie. So good luck and let the fun begin! Enemies Ancient Gate Guardian [18] ??? Stats currently unknown

Quietly entering the private room of the tavern, Joust bows her head in greeting to the odd fellow with many pieces of interesting tech clogging his pockets. "I would apologize for my lateness, though it seems no one else has arrived yet as well." Joust tried to make it seem like a pleasant statement but couldn't tell if the full effect was received.

4 Co. entered the tavern back room with the barkeeper dragging at his feet. A bright red cape draped over his shoulders and a pair of orange shades covering his optical sensors. The barkeep was protesting how rude he was being and that this private customer already hired a set of adventurers when 4 Co. gently kicked the barkeep back into the taverns main room and said quite blandly. "Just who the heck do you think I am?"

Suddenly, there is a loud bang followed by a flash of light and a could of smoke. Some coughing is heard from the cloud and when it finally clears a rather strange looking girl of about 15 years of age stands before you. Her skin looks as if it is made from polished wood and her hair of long strands of grass. She is dressed in a little black dress with a cape and a wide brimmed witches hat. Her eyes are the color of amber and she has a large broad smile on her face. She speaks with a cheerful high pitched voice. "Greetings, I am Poa Aráethos, the dryad magician. I come to render my services as a spellcaster and a healer. She steps froward and shakes the mustached man's hand. Despite her appearance of being made out of wood her hand is quite soft to the touch. "It a pleasure to meet you uh..Mr" She realized she did not know her employers name.

The man looks rather surprised by both Poa's impromptu appearance and her sudden handshake, but he returns the shake all the same. "Ah, that's right, I never introduced myself to you did I? How rude of me." He seems to puff up a bit with pride as he introduces himself, "My name is Dr. Marlin Dreitzler, Miyr's leading authority on magical archaeology...a pleasure. It seems your last companion is a little late...ah well, you all will just have to fill him in when he turns up. So, getting right to business, the reason I hired you is for protection. You see, me and my team are heading on an expedition deep into an uncharted mountainous region. Now, I've already made forays into the area, and managed to find a band of local gypsies that traveled often near the area. They told me of a great wonder hidden within the mountains. Something about a portal that could transport people to a mystical city in the clouds. Now, naturally I was a bit...hesitant to believe them, but my adventurous nature got the better of me. So, I took my team to the place they indicated on my map. At first we didn't find anything, but sure enough one of my men stumbled upon a strange structure covered in many runes the likes of which I'd never even heard of, let alone seen. It didn't look operable at the time, but as soon as we touched it the thing sprang to life! I sent in men immediately to check the safety of the thing and whatever might be on the other side. They got through all right, but then about half a day later only one member of one of the six, four-man squads came limping out of the portal. He'd been so badly wounded that he collapsed after only a few feet and died. I don't know what's on the other side of that portal, but all I know is this is an opportunity we cannot pass up. So I marked the true location, broke camp and headed back immediately for talented help...then...well, enter you four and your friend. I'm willing to let you keep whatever treasure you find on the other side, pending you at least let me study any artifacts first, and I'll even offer a sizable reward to boot. So, do you agree to the terms? I won't lie, it's dangerous, and I certainly can't make you do this. So, I leave it up to each of you."

Poa’s eyes widened a bit at the description of the gate. It all sounded very fascinating and mystical. But her smile quickly fell when she heard about the deaths of the party members. “I see, so it does sound rather dangerous. I’m sorry for the loss fo your companions.” Poa ponders this for a few minutes. “Still, I did not sign up for this expecting it to be a cake walk. Danger is part of an adventures life. You will have my spells to guide you on this quest.” Poa smiles again. “Besides, it all sounds rather exciting doesn’t it? To think we might be laying our eyes on sights that might not have been seen in ages!”

The doors to the tavern part once again to allow passage, of a boy dressed in a monk's gear of earthen toned colored cloth and leather. His tall boots were covered with a layer of dust as he had clearly been walking outside just prior to his entrance. "My apologies for my tardiness compatriots." Van stood silently with the others, arms folded behind his back, and took a moment to silently observe the company he would be keeping with for the next few measures of time he would be with them.

Finishing his work, Clendyx stood up, saying, "Whatever is in there, it shouldn't be a challenge for us. We've got our bases covered with our magicians, me and Lance on point, and 4 Co...doing whatever needs to be done. We'll come back to tell the tale, and if we're lucky, clear out whatever attacked your men, so you can see whatever is in there for yourself." Shaking the man's hand, he gathered his belongings and stood by the door, his piece said.

((I voted for Clendyx since he was at the top of the list so that I could see the results. So that makes Kail winner!))
Dr. Dreitzler waves Van in as he steps through the door, apparently unconcerned with his late arrival. "Thank you for your condolences, Miss. It is most gracious of you." He says with a hand to his heart. "Now I must sympathize with Master Clendyx's eagerness to set out. Shall we go?"
((I'm going to assume there were no objections. Pardon me if I'm wrong. Also, we shall assume for gameplay's sake that Van was filled in by the party on the way to the mountains.))
Dr. Dreitzler's team of twenty men, complete with several wagons and many a sturdy steed to pull them, sets out alongside the party for the forbidding Frostback Mountains. The mountains are rather appropriately named, you notice, due to the perpetual layer of snow that covers the vast majority of the mountain's face. Dr. Dreitzler's team leads you through the winding mountain passes, a veritable maze of tunnels and paths, till at last you emerge into a vast, deep valley nestled within the very heart of the mountain itself. Great, twisted trees of petrified wood spring from the ground in uneven intervals, while all manner of strange shrubbery covers the rest of the forest, complete with its own, unique wildlife. "Breathtaking...isn't it?" Dr. Dreitzler comments with a twinkle in his eye. You start into the valley, leaving the wagons and most of the team behind to set up camp, while Dr. Dreitzler, and two armed guards accompany you. They guide you through the thick forest for nearly another two hours before a clearing is seen. Within it, just as Dr. Dreitzler had spoken of, is the great gate. It stands nearly fifteen feet tall and ten feet across, made entirely of some unknown black rock. Within it's face is chiseled a foot long rune on every square that makes up the gate, giving it a total of seven different runes. The gate's center is a mass of greens, blues and grays that constantly swirl within it, yet seem to undulate like a rock thrown in a still, clear pond. "From here you can easily see our camp." Dr. Dreitzler comments as he points off at a distant ridge from which the tell-tale smoke of fire pits can be seen, "When you return, for whatever reason, that is where we will be. Now here, take this." Dr. Dreitzler says as he hands Poa a small, glass sphere. "That orb will allow me to see what you see, when you channel your magic into it. I will also be able to hear you and you will be able to hear me. I trust you will treat that with care. It is an invaluable artifact that I found on my first ever dig, and I would hate to lose it. Other than that, if you have any questions left to ask me, now would be the time. If not...good luck and if the Gods are willing I'll see you soon."

As they travel to their destination Poa glances around at the changing surroundings with avid fascination. She had never seen such sights before. Her experience with the outside world, up to his point, had mostly come from text books and stories told by her father. Her excitement was so great she could barely contain it. However she kept composure, the trace of her fascination being hidden in her eyes. She didn’t want to appear like a little girl to her companions. After all, she was supposed to lead them. Nobility had it perks but it also came with great responsibility. Still, this was her first adventure and the exhilaration of it all was an experience in itself.
As they neared the end of the second leg of the journey she exclaimed out loud as the portal came into viewing distance. “Whoa!” Portals were not new to her. She used them to travel around a lot, often obscuring them in smoke so as to make it look that she magically appeared. But this one was unlike any she had seen before. It was massive, the amount of energy it must take to keep it continually open like that she had no idea how they could do it. She started to try and think about how it might be done when her attention was brought back to reality by Dr. Dreitzler offering her the orb. “Thank you, I shall put it with my fathers. I will take good care of it. I'll contact you once we reach the other side. I'm sure you would like too see what lies beyond as much as I do." With that Poa began to gingerly approach the portal. Once she was in range she stuck her hand into the portal and quickly withdrew it. It felt...strange. However before completely going through she turned around to wait and see if her companions were ready, or if they themselves had some questions for the doctor.

During the trip to the portal a lot of things had run through the mind of Joust. The most prevalent was the presence of the anomaly itself. It was so different from its original parameters. So broken, beyond any repair. Its malfunctions disguised as clever, odd behavioral quirks. She decided to subside, and let the one known as loyalty have his turn. Surprisingly he decided to keep the frail appearance of a wizard adept. Though the weighty lance was no longer heavy to her and the gleam in her eyes was far from the timid one from before.
"You never get tired of seeing something so majestic. Its in amazingly good shape for artifact tech..." She said smiling at everyone. Silently appraising them, each of there behaviors gave her so much information. the young mage especially screamed of newness to combat. Joust contemplated saying something to her but decided for now to let it go. Who knew what they would face?

Looking all around, silent as could be, Clendyx was assessing something different from Joust - he was assessing the land around him. As he was traveling, he could not help but have the strangest feeling of dejavu, like he had been down this path before. He had spent nine years stranded in a set of mountains that looked similar to these, so it was not uncommon for him to be at home here. But, he kept getting the feeling, and it was bugging him. The twisted trees, the strange wildlife...as he came upon the portal, he gazed at the framework, and at the strange black rock. Not obsidian, which was too fragile...this was ancient, very ancient. It was stone, alright, but it was hardened by a technique long ago forgotten by man...or even dwarves. "I doubt that even the strongest of all spells could do more than chip a few flakes of this off...someone wanted this portal to last for a very long time. This has got to be at least 5000 years old, older than any race of creature in the land. The question is...why has nothing come out of the other side? It's a two way portal...could whatever is in there be more afraid of us than we could ever be of them?" Pondering this, he waited for someone to take charge. He, himself, preferred to wait for orders, as he was not used to leading.

Sensing the hesitation from a few of his fellow adventurers, Van moves to stand next to Poa. With his face now merely inches away from the gate's event horizon, Van nodes reassuringly to the young magician. "Let us be off then." And with that he steps through the surface of the gate.

The portal ripples as Van steps through, like water rushing over his body and swallowing him up...
Indeed, to Van himself it feels like stepping through a wall of ice water. Your vision tunnels into nothingness, and your stomach feels as though it turned itself inside out, then rapidly everything returns to normal. You now stand on the other side of the portal on top of a great, massive tower. A gentle wind whips at your face and from your new vantage point it seems as if you can see forever. Behind you lies the edge of nothing, where far, far below you can see the peaks of the mountain surrounding the valley you came from. Out beyond is a city of great magnitude, with towering buildings of silver stone and golden embossing. All but what seems to be the most basic of homes have superb, well-crafted stained glass windows bearing everything from past battles, to prophets, to mystical animals. The craftsmanship is of a level you can scarcely believe, and as you watch a white cloud float at eye level just beyond the tower it does indeed seem as though you are in a city floating within the very clouds.
To the others, you watch as Van steps through the portal, and as he is swallowed by the strange substance of the portal you notice that each of the runes begin to glow as lightning charges through the symbols. Then the power of the runes link together, and from the top of the portal a burst of power is literally shot straight into the clouds above. The portal then returns to its former self, no worse for wear and bearing no evidence of the transpired events.
