I got hte idea to discuss this from the Muslimah2Muslimah blog!

The subject is wearing make up in hijab.

Do you think a natural looking face is okay?
Is it okay to wear colourful eyeliner and eye shadow?
Lipstick?

...Or none at all?

Well, I personally prefer the natural look. If you wear hijab, then I suggest that person wear as little makeup as possible.
Because wearing too much makeup makes it pointless, imo, to wear hijab.
Sadly, in the Middle East, wearing hijab is now a fashion statement. Nothing wrong with that, but the whole meaning of wearing a hijab is lost.

I was watching this arabic show the other day, and they were showing different ways to wear hijab. And they dressed up this girl in tight clothes, lots of makeup, and a hijab. It wasn't even the traditional way of wearing hijab. It was all poofy, and tied up on the side and stuff like that. What's the point? Honestly.

Thats so true surprised I've noticed that hijab is becoming a fashion in the Middle East...
I like the natural look as well. Sometimes some foundation, and chapstick :B

A woman shouldn't look attractive in public, especially if she's wearing the hijab. Same goes with clothing: plain and simple as possible.

A bit of natural make-up such as applying foundation is fine, but applying too much make-up could attract attention towards her.

Well my cousin's wear lots of make up, but i don't. Probably one of the few girls who don't wear make up at school.

But i think natural makeup like kohl is good.

I totally agree with this 3nodding But I love foundation and kohl.. And also lip balm.

But thick make-up and hijab just looks odd.... Doesn't it? sweatdrop

I do not wear hijab (I cover my hair in a different manner) but I do agree with the opinions expressed so far.

In my area, I notice it's mostly the 30-and-under girls that tend to wear make up while in hijab; the black eyeliner (I'm not sure if it's kohl; I've never quite figured out the difference between kohl liner and regular eye liner xp ) and then the dark, smokey, sexy eyeshadow gonk . It looks beautiful on them, sure...but it does defeat the purpose of the hijab >.< How much sense does it make to cover up your body's beauty only to vamp up the beauty on your face?? WTF?

blaugh so true!

I wish some women can think for one second and go "well you know, I'm beautiful, and i wear a hijab to protect my beauty, so why again am i putting make up?"

I don't a hijab. But i don't wear make up, stare unless Blistex is now make up.
The only time i Muslim can wear make up, ever though is wearing a hijab is during special events, or party, and thing like that. But not too much.

I know some young Muslim girls wear make up, and too much of it, every day. eek Ever at the Masque! Which is forbidden! I female must not show off her body on holy grounds!

I wish Muslim in America, smart up a bit, and show how good Muslim, and how respectful we are.
Also the parents need to bit down on the rules. Instead of going "prom is bad, so No you can't go!"
They should take the time to explain, why a Muslim girl can't go to the prom, or get a boyfriend, wear tight clothes, and other things like that."
I know alot of Muslim, who go "why can't we go to the prom?" "it's just a party." "all we will do is hang out with only friends who are girls."

yeah a party where a girl and a boy go together. Where teenage get drunk! Where girls get rape!

Prom is a BIG no-no fora young respectful Muslim girl.

I agree, I dont get why girls pack on make up and wear hijab.
It kind of makes the hijab futile.

I'm pretty sure kohl is allowed. I heard somewhere that the Prophet's wives wore it in public. Can anyone find me the ahadith on this?

Kohl, while generally encouraged, still falls under the category of "adornment", a beautification. The point of observing hijab, of course, is that you're not intentionally beautifying yourself for the world.

IslamQA's view.
IslamOnline's answer

Another scholar from IslamOnline has said the following:
Quote:
The women who go outside, without covering their faces should have a modest look. Kohl or any other cosmetics, if they become too obvious should be avoided.

I believe it's established among all scholars that women should avoid wearing make-up outside the home. It also directly opposes the intention of wearing hijab.

Personally, I wear hijab and don't wear any make-up outside, not even foundation. I will occasionally use lip balm (like vaseline) in winter to keep my lips from getting dry, sore and split xD but there is hardly a difference to my appearance so I believe it's fine.

For me, it's not so much about personal preference, but just that I can't reconcile wearing make up and wearing hijab at the same time, it seems like two opposites to me.

Hm, I think it's better to go minimal make-up if you're in hijab~
The whole point of wearing a hijab is to look modest and to cover one's hair as it's considered the beauty of a woman or something (I read about it a while ago so i don't remember exactly what the article said). If you wear make-up, it attracts unwanted attention from guys so it kinda defeats the purpose~

I say natural b/c wearing heavy make-up defeats the purpose of the hijab which is to cover and draw attention from your body.
