Usually at this time of night Keena rested comfortably, her muzzle resting lightly on her soft cream-tipped paws as she slept. Her body would be still, golden eyes closed and every inch of her relaxed. Occasionally an ear would perk slightly, in response to some sound, but always it relaxed to lay back with its mate. Her coat, with its pale tan and cream markings and soft warm golden spots, all but glowed in the silvery white light of the moon. The smallish lioness would seem content for the moment, breathing softly and laying still, lost in the happy wanderings of dreams.

But, tonight, she was awake. Her warm golden eyes reflected the shining crescent of moonlight as she gazed up at the stars scattered through the heavens. It was no nightmare that woke her, flanks heaving and eyes wild, nor had she spent the night pacing and worried, unable to fall asleep. Instead, she’d merely woken for no reason that could be determined. Whatever she’d been dreaming, the memory of it had fled with waking, leaving her feeling oddly untired but otherwise quite calm.

Besides, it was such a lovely night, the faint wisps of cloud doing little to obscure the bright pinpoints of light scattered through the wide open skies. With so few trees around, there were no leafy branches to block out the night either. Just an endless expanse of stars in the rich velvety darkness of the sky. Keena, still stretched comfortably on her stomach with her paws lightly crossed at her chest, watched the distant shine, completely at peace.

The corpse was heavy.

Heaving the dead weight along, the neck of the deceased secure between tight, perfect teeth and a clenched jaw, was not an easy task. Probably because this meal was a good deal larger than the kind most lions were used to carting around. Even a zebra would have been easier to tug through the dying grasses. Nibbling some of the soft, juicy flesh hadn’t really helped lighten the load, either. How was he supposed to eat such a large meal all by himself before the meat started to spoil? Some liked rotting meat. He, however, was not one of those fools.

When the blood was still seeping, when the heart still had a few beats left in it, that was when the meat was the most delicious. Eating someone while they were alive, having them die by his fangs, was truly the only way to properly enjoy a meal. Too long after the body had died, and you weren’t eating a catch any more, only leftovers. Still, this was a larger meal than he was used to. It would be a shame to waste it, if only because this kind of kill didn’t come around every day.

Luckily enough, he saw someone not far from him, observing the night. Releasing the snapped neck of his recent murder, the somewhat small, muscular lion moved his way forward, licking the blood from his mouth as he came up behind the girl. “Ah, my dear, you’re a vision,” he cooed softly, as though singing a song, “are you, by any chance, hungry? Got me a good deal of meat I’d be happy to share with you… if you’d like.” He looked back over his shoulder, at the body that lay open for her to observe.

The body of another lion.

Keena's ears swiveled around at the sound of pawsteps behind her, but she wasn't worried really. There was too much a feeling of contentment for her to worry right now. It was a soft, still sort of night, with the stars shining so very brightly. Kisun had vanished sometime yesterday, but she wasn't the least bit worried about the hare that sometimes accompained her and sometimes did not. She was a free spirit, and while Keena appreciated her company, she was well aware that the hare could look after herself should she so choose.

Her ears flicked again when she heard the voice, and she could only assume the male was talking to her, since there didn't seem to be anyone else about. A faint smile flickered over her expression, it would be nice to have a little bit of company. Someone to share the pretty night with, watching the stars until the sun crept over the horizon golden and warm.

"It's very kind of you to offer- oh!" Keena gasped, having just turned around to look at the lion while she spoke to him, and her eyes fell upon the body. "Oh...oh...no... what...what happened?" she choked, on her paws in an instant, her soft contentedness vanished completely into panicked worrry as she bounded over to the lion laying so very still...

It still hadn't quite connected in her mind, that the stranger was offering her meat and here was a corpse. She looked the dead lion over mutely, though it was rather painfully obvious there wasn't anything she could possibly do to help. Not now that death had already come and gone.

"H...how...?"

The somewhat small male lion arched a furry brow at her surprise, as though he actually hadn’t been expecting it to startle her. To be honest, if hadn’t been the true reaction he’d been looking for. It was fun when they turned and discovered their food was another lion. The disgust on their faces was often quite hilarious. She, however, hadn’t been horrified to see the meat. Rather, she seemed more concerned about the dead body. Didn’t she get that he was offering her another lion to eat?

Her reaction wasn’t completely worthless, however. The innocent confusion that seemed to come from her tickled his heart, making him sick and driving his desire to upset her all the more at the same time.

“Oh? You don’t get it, pet?” he replied lightly, keeping his tone as casual as possible. Looking down at the body, he smacked the face of the dead lion with his paw, watching the fur of his blood-soaked mane bounce lifelessly.

“I killed him, of course,” Seemed that honesty was the best policy in this instant, “bugger threatened my territory so I had no choice but to rip his sodding throat out and let him wear his entire blood volume. Figured it would be a waste to let all the meat just lie there and decompose, and I didn’t want stinking hyenas picking at it. Isn’t sharing supposed to be the good thing to do?”

He watched her, sitting down as his tail beat the ground.

“You don’t look pleased. Come on, have you had lion meat before? It’s real good, I promise. You just have to give it a try.”

Keena startled badly when he just smacked the dead lion's face, looking more than a little distressed. She just...didn't know...what to make of this. It was horrible that someone had died, been killed. But at the same time, this stranger seemed to have a reason for it. Not a really good one, nothing justified taking a life like this. But it was a reason, and surely then he must believe himself just for it.

"I...I'm s-sure you did what you...you thought you...h-had too..." she choked, trying not to sound as horrified as she felt. She didn't want to hurt his feelings, not when he apparently thought he was trying to be nice. "And...and I...I appreciate your...your...g-generosity..." the lioness continued, swallowing hard. "But...but I...I'm afraid I...I c-c-can't. I just c-can't."

There was no way she could bring herself to eat another lion. It didn't matter that he was already dead, or that this stranger seemed intent on the... on there being no waste. But...oh, how awful. She couldn't eat him, there was no way!

“Oh not at all,” the male replied easily enough, watching the frightened female was a content, smug grin, “when I said I had no choice, I was lying: I could have let him go with a warning, sure thing. I just thought better of it and killed him anyway. Think that was a bit wrong of me?” He asked, his tone sickeningly innocent. Looking down at the dead lion, he chuckled, tilting his head to the side. The dead lion didn’t seem to have much to say about it now, of course.

He offered a grunt at her declining his kind offer, hardly surprised to know that she didn’t want to eat the lion he had killed in cold blood. Not many found the same pleasure in eating their own kind as he.

Probably a good thing, there.

“I must admit, though, I find myself a little bit offended over here. Here I am, offering you something nice and you’re shooting me down without even giving it a try,” he claws extended at that, gripping the dirt in a threatening manner, “I think you should at least try the meat before saying no, don’t you?” He didn’t sound like he was asking her to at all- he was demanding it of her.

Keena quivered, her soft eyes finally torn from the poor unfortunate creature to fix on the dark lion. Her gaze was wide, shock and disbelief more than evident on her features and in her golden orbs. Slowly, both her cream-tipped ears laid back, the lioness seeming to shrink slightly on herself. She just couldn't understand...what was he saying? It didn't make sense! It was like somehow, suddenly, all the words were getting jumbled up and mixed all out of order between her ears.

He killed this lion. And not because he had to. But...why? Why? Why?

"...why?" she finally asked, clearly unable to do much more than stare at him now, thuroughly shocked and utterly confused. This stranger, this lion, he wasn't making any sense. It was nice of him to share, she supposed, somewhere deep down in her mind noting with mild interest. But she couldn't accept his offer any more than she could apparently manage to accept his words.

“Why?” Malenga repeated with a grunt, arching a furry eyebrow, “why what, love? Why should you eat the meat? Why did I kill this blighter in the first place?” He chuckled lightly, drinking in her confusion and horror with the most malicious of delight imaginable. This girl.. she seemed so bewildered by his antics. It wasn’t something uncommon, of course. The fact that she hadn’t turned tail and run off as fast as possible was what really seemed out of place.

“If the former, cause it’s good and I think you’d like it if you gave it a try. Not every day you get to have something different, right? Anyway: it’s all meat! Sooner or later, we’re all as good as dead anyway. Least this guy gets to serve a purpose, rather than rotting in a ditch somewhere.” He looked at the corpse a moment, before bringing his bright blue eyes back to the female.

“If the latter, well, I guess you could say we didn’t get on right well enough for me to let him live. Like I said- he threatened me home and I wouldn’t have it. You’d do it too, wouldn’t you? Kill to defend your land, if you had to. Just cause I’m a bit quicker to the bite doesn’t make me in the wrong. Why not use the meat? More respectful, I imagine. Or some nonsense like that. Look, you going to eat this or not? I’m getting a bit tired of waiting on you.”

Keena shuddered, biting her lip against the sting of tears she could feel starting in the backs of her eyes. Life was a precious thing, to see it lost so carelessly... it was slowly starting to hit her through the confusion, and it made her heart feel squeezed and pained. It didn't matter that she didn't know this lion, didn't matter that she knew nothing about him. Yesterday he'd been a living, breathing, laughing, loving, dreaming person. And now he was dead.

"No, I wouldn't," she said softly, blinking the tears back as she lifted her golden eyes to the dark stranger again. "I'd never waste a life like that." Her voice was sincere, and she didn't flinch from meeting his bright blue eyes. She had nothing in her to hide after all, he could hear the sorrow and confusion in her voice already.

She took a slow shuddering breath, her eyes still on his for a moment more. "No, thank you, but...no. I'm afraid I can't join you. But... please, don't wait on me. I don't mind." If he felt it was more respectful to consume the fallen lion, then she wasn't going to argue with him. But she couldn't possibly bring herself to take part. She just...couldn't do it.
