Ok, so the week after break is chair auditions and I am deathly nervous. Since we have enough people this year we are able to have a wind ensemble (higher level) and separate concert band (lower level). I want to be in the Wind ensemble SO BADLY. I have the 1st clarinet part to Variations on a Korean Folk song which involves a lot of "noodling" which is fast fingered-scale-type-stuff and obnoxiously high notes like above the staff E, D and G (four ledger lines 0_o). im a horn player so i don't know much about this stuff but my best friend plays clarinet even though we both don't like the sound of the others instrument (no offense). i've been 1st chair for 2 years and my director plays the horn too so she always picks on me. have you ever heard of a piece called the hunt by james d ployhar?

hmmm, can't say I have...*looks it up* haha, my band director just picks on everyone XD. Funny thing is if I didn't play clarinet, I was going to play horn XD

I can't give you much advice since im in the low brass. I play the trombone, but with me...I just go in there and give my best. We have a trumpet player who tried out for Lion's Band, this really amazing band and he didn't make it cause he warmed up and went to the room to try out, got freaked and went to go warm up again and he ended up not making it. Don't freak yourself out over. Practice until you can't practice anymore! Good luck!!

thanks to those who said good luck and the advice! Yeah, I got nervous... Today, my best friend (who was first chair last year) told me I got it with this ridiculous smile on her face...haha, I love her XD. Erm...I passed out....

We don't have chair competitions in my high school..
Had them every other week in middle school, though.
I got first chair all the time.(the other flutes sucked, bad)
I'm always second/third flute now :'D..herrr.
But..um, tips for future reference:
Practice. A lot.
Slow it down, repeat. Repeat and repeat measures you suck at.
And don't panic during the audition...obviously you'll do worse if you're all nervous.

Make sure you practice your scales, arpeggios, and some triplets. In our book we have things called thirds, fourths, and fifths where on thirds you skip one note up the scale, fourths you skip two notes, and fifths we skip three. It really helps with accuracy and the more you practice it the faster you can hit notes accurately.
