The moment that the black dome had settled on Barren Pines, Sailor Chronos had keeled over.

There were good things about this and bad things about this. The good thing was that Hero, Capricorn and Libra were out of their poky little living space -- Hero was still chewing on her liver by all accounts, but the dictatorial redhead had taken Giselle and Aurelia out with her (they were running extraordinarily low on pop-tarts, despite the rationing system that had been put in place. Even Elke was getting a little sick of pop-tarts). They'd discussed a change to go and open the windows on the other side of the gym, taking precautions as Hero had always bitched about taking precautions --

-- and it was at that point that Sailor Chronos, Serenade Soriano, had fainted dead away.

Nothing could be done to rouse her. No pinching. No water on the face. No calling out her name. She was still breathing, but she was about as responsive as a dead log -- eyes closed, obviously asleep. But out. This didn't seem to be a normal faint, or a normal sleep, and Serenade hadn't shown any signs of narcolepsy or Sudden Fainting or anything previously -- it was Serenade. Serenade hugged zombies. Serenade did not swoon dead away at anything.

Worse still, somebody was trying to force the gym doors now. Everything bad always happened at once.

Elke was in a panic.

No, that was too kind a word for it. Serenade had fainted. Not even fainted! Elke knew fainting, since she'd done it a couple of time in science when they were blood typing, and this was not fainting. Plus, this was also Serenade! Serenade was like a brick wall versus fear. She wasn't scared of the dark, or blood, or Hero, or anything, ever.

Now someone was trying to get in, and she was torn between just letting them bang on the door and staying with the princess (as she knew Hero would demand) or going to see what was going on. Because this was so not the right knock to be someone who belonged in the gym! And Giselle had promised to use the right knock. Everyone had. But what if it was someone alive and zombies were going to eat them? Could she really let them get eaten, even if she knew they wouldn't exactly die? The answer to that was obvious. The answer to that was No.

Elke, quietly hyperventilating, shook Serenade once more for good measure (gently!) and went to the door. "Who's there," she called, hands on the end of the shovel that was more likely not to give her broken fingers. Her knuckles, gripping the handle, were white. This was Not Good.

There were voices outside the door when the pounding ceased and the people had obviously surmised that it had been locked. After a moment, an unfamiliar voice said from outside: "Foramen, take the door out."

This did not sound good.

Hero would kill her if someone broke the door. They would supplement the poptarts with Elke Stew, or Elke a la Carte. And then Elke would be dead and not able to protect the Princess!

So, comforted by the fact that she would be able to henshin into Virgo if the person on the other side of the door was a threat, she hurriedly pulled the shovel out and opened one side of the door. Then she retreated to stand in front of her fallen friend. "Who are you," she asked, staring at the source of the unfamiliar voices.

******** YEAH! Finally a chance to do something. Foramen was so excited that the salute he threw at Astraea didn't even seem sarcastic.

'Okay, no fainting this time,' he told himself. His first try could be forgiven for not going to plan. A second failure would just be embarrassing. He cricked his neck once, twice, then raised a hand and gave in the power thrumming through his veins. Concentrating on the doors, he half-shouted, "Vanishing Rift, Slice!"

A gloved hand sliced through the air. In front of the gym door, a crackling blue tear appeared, following the movement of Foramen's hand, though several metres away. The rift matched the design inscribed on Foramen's brooch, if anyone had bothered to take notice of such a detail. (Foramen hadn't - the sparkly sash and velvet-soft pants were pretty distracting every time he looked down.)

The rift was already on top of the door, and widened to encompass it completely. Rift and door vanished. Foramen allowed a tiny smirk to begin forming. So far so good. His eyes shifted to the left, and just as he decided that would be a good place to dump the door, the rift crackled open again and dropped the gym door. The door tried to remain upright for a few seconds, before toppling to the ground. The rift winked out of existence.

Foramen gave himself a second or two. Nope, no extreme loss of energy or desire to faint, vision not going black around the edges. Second attempt at using powers... SUCCESS!

Two things happened at once; Elke opened the door, just as Foramen got rid of it. Elke immediately jumped back as the rift returned the door and it fell over just where she had gotten to; considering that there had been the snick of the lock opening just as Foramen had fired his rift, Astraea decided to roll her eyes instead wearily.

They must have looked an odd team to Elke; a silver-haired, cat-tailed (and eared!) girl. Another, pretty redheaded senshi, the one who'd taken out the door. Sue Gottschalk, whose hair was tufting up. And behind them... two zombies, one carrying the other.

"Where's Princess Chronos?"

This was not Elke's happy day.

Hero and Aurelia and Giselle were gone -- well, Hero, Libra and Capricorn -- and she had no idea that, no matter what, she wouldn't be able to shift into Virgo. That would have turned 'good day' into 'worse'. And there was Serenade, lying prone as Sailor Chronos, unmovable and unawoken even by all the noise.

The door getting eaten by some scary empty thing startled a squeak out of her, but nothing more. When the door fell over, she flinched; but she didn't do anything, not even look up, until the same voice who had told Foramen to 'take out the door' asked where Chronos was. Then she looked up, momentarily confused as she looked at the catgirl. At the redheaded senshi. At the pair of zombies. And then she saw Sue.

She tried to shift into Virgo, whispering the words under her breath. It didn't work, and her eyes widened at a little. Tried again, with no dice. That turned Elke's controllable panic into the kind of terror that horror movie actresses only tried to achieve, the kind where your knees gave out and you felt pretty queasy. Sue, why did Sue have to be the one to find the second gym and who were all these people and oh, Hero was going to be so mad about the door and she was no good to protecting the Princess if she was human, and she couldn't find Virgo anymore, was she going to turn back into a monster??--

"No," she yelled. It was defiance of the 'turning back into a monster' as well as to the silver-haired catgirl's question. "Go away! I won't let you touch her!"

Elke got to her feet again. There was nothing to be scared of, except there were zombies and Sue (whose hair looked like he had attempted to style it into kitty ears) and a redheaded senshi who could apparently eat doors and a catgirl and Elke could do nothing. (why couldn't she change over? why were these people trying to get in here, why--)

Abeline thought that Lucas needed to loose some weight, or stop eating whatever was making him heavy. It might have been another student, but she did not want to think about that. As the doors to the gym were, erm... opened, she let out a sigh. Elke looked pretty tasty, she had to admit, but Abeline was not going to be much trouble, since she was barely able to talk, let alone nibble on those tasty legs. Abeline's stomach growled and she rolled her good eye. How embarrassing.

She was pretty hungry, but if she was going to eat anyone, it was going to be that pipe-toting lunatic who had taken to her face. Her beautiful face! still, it was probably going to make the people she was with a little nervous, so she stopped eyeing off Elke's tender kneecaps and glanced toward the rest of the universe, whistling... well... not whistling, making a gurgling sound which was more worrying than anything else.

The gym looked like a somewhat safe-haven, but Zombeline wasn't sure about leaving Lucas there... still, he was heavy and she had dragged him across the campus on her back, so if she didn't put him down soon, she was going to drop him. If zombies could sweat, she would have been quite sweaty by now. As it was, she just smelled.... well... dead. And a little disappointed. Unless the Catgirl was about to explain that Elke wasn't a real person, and actually a walking buffet, so Abeline could eat as much of her as she wanted.... or that by eating Elke, there was a cure to her need to eat people--- like Elke's ribs were made in magical sauce that would turn her back into a living being again--- wait would that make her a cannibal?

Sue's feelings upon approaching the door had been mixed. He didn't know what he was coming here for, but he knew it was important. t was that importance that made everything so complicated. He felt wildly anxious (what if she didn't like him?), deeply confused (who was "she", and how did he know it was a "she"?), borderline terrified (what if she, like Abeline, was a greenie?), and underlying it all, oddly suspicious and grouchy (Sue didn't know what was going on. He STILL didn't know what was going on. He was getting pulled along for this ride, and he didn't even know where the hall it was taking him.)

Upon opening the door, however, one emotion surged ahead to overtake the rest. It was the sense of disbelief and anger, that one that commonly made him say things such as "Oh, <******** quotations weren't just there as an illustration, either, because those were precisely the first words to drop out of his mouth upon seeing Elke Arma inside the gym.

Without paying much thought to his still-adamant concerns that Elke was still a greenie in disguise, Sue shoved forward, past the security detail that was Foramen. "You get the ******** out of our way, Elke," Sue growled - yes growled, and that growl was getting more realistic all the time. He couldn't get a good look at the person Elke was hiding behind her, but the bits he did see - flashes of long hair, pale green - set off an instant protective urge that commanded he make sure that the potential zombie was no where ******** near her.

Caught up in these compulsions, Sue didn't take the time to realize that Elke herself represented one of the dots on his mental map. Just like Elke, caught up in the terror of the intrusion, probably hadn't noticed the henshin pen that was sticking out of the front pocket of Sue's pajama shirt.

(He really did need to give that thing to Cancer. Once he felt certain that she wouldn't try eating him - or it.)

The blip on Sue's radar changed, momentarily exploded the entire area, and then sharpened down again into something diamond and sparkling. And at this point, Sailor Chronos woke up.

Serenade Soriano had pink eyes; the first signal that all was not correct was the girl's deep, fathomless blue eyes. It was not Serenade. It wasn't even Chronos. Nobody had any pretense of that. She stood as though she were a much taller woman, and just her very presence warmed you through from the bones outwards. She was glowing faintly, usually not anyone's good idea but you didn't seem to notice -- and she looked a little sad.

To Foramen it was like getting slapped in the face and screamed at: BOW DOWN! To Sue and Elke it was more like seeing some holy object, some grail or relic. Even to Abeline. And to Astraea --

Astraea bolted.

The thing who was in Serenade immediately gave chase after her -- caught her arm as she tried to squeeze past Abeline and Lucas, and drew her back. Astraea burst into tears (Hell froze over; pigs flew; stones wept blood) and tried to turn her face away, but Serenade's hand was stroking her face, leaning forward to murmur something. Astraea simply dropped like a stone in front of her, burying her face in her arms, and she said through her tears --

"Ancient Lady."

And turned her face away.

The first Queen Serenity grimaced, and when she spoke spoke with the voice of a much older woman, echoing a little. Otherworldly. "I'm sorry," she said, and this was to Sue and Elke. "When Charonite cursed the school, I was momentarily waylaid inside the Princess' body." She was reaching down to stroke Astraea's hair momentarily, and paused by Foramen: naturally, impulsively, she wrapped him up in a motherly hug and whispered something briefly in his ear.

Then she continued her walk back into the gymnasium. "Until the curse is lifted, Chronos is gone. But not lost. I'm afraid I spent too long with her, Zue -- but she's fine, I may give you my word."

"No," said Elke vehemently. The pen meant nothing to her; if she'd had one, she'd never seen it. "You a-and your golf club can go away. The Princess isn't a zombie and you can't hurt her." Even if she couldn't be Virgo and do that... magical redirecty thing, she could be Elke and just not move.

She heard fabric rustle behind her, and turned to look. Chronos was getting up! A smile broke across her face: "Princess," Elke started to say, but then her face fell... No. It wasn't Serenade, or Chronos, or anyone she knew, no, it was something else. She felt... she felt... reverent. Like this was someone to respect and to honor. But there wasn't that pull she felt to her Princess, and she missed that like one of her arms had been taken off. (Just in case, she made sure they were still there.)

Elke was crying, too, but that was normal. She cried often, for dumb reasons like missing her bus. This time, it was because she thought Serenade was gone forever. And the Ancient Lady's words seemed to echo that. She wiped her face and said, "She'll come back? She'll definitely come back? You didn't hurt the Princess?"

And: "Who's Charonite?"

Sue felt... disconcerted?

There were too many lines in his head right now. There were the ones that came naturally - the ones that spoke of reverence, of hope, of good emotions at this encounter. They were the ones that heard the word Zue and didn't throw up an instant shield of doubt.

But then there was... him. The boy that didn't know what was happening, that was just stubborn enough that he didn't let these feelings rise unexamined. He wanted to know why he felt like he did; what he was seeing. Why this woman was called Ancient Lady, why she spoke of being in the body of the Princess - why she saw him and called him by that alien name. And especially what it was about her that made Astraea start crying.

Sue didn't feel that awestruck himself, that was for sure. He just felt a sort of knotted pit as she told him, Chronos is gone, another gut reaction to throw on the mounting pile that was already pulling him in all directions.

In the end, there was only one thing he could pull out of the mess of his mind. It was a stand-off-ish grouchiness, something to cover up his curiosity and fear, something that did its damnedest not to give into that foreign sense of reverence (even while being so careful not to cross any lines he couldn't uncross.)

"My name's not Zue." Half a beat. "M'am."

Oh, this was going to be harder than Sue thought....

Abeline dropped Lucas. It was an accident, really, but she was too surprised for anything else. There was this very pretty glowing woman, and.... and... the catgirl seemed afraid of the--- and then the stone faced woman was crying.

Even though this woman with pink eyes seemed to just wash over her pressence, powerful and elegant, making Abeline want to kneel like she was really some sort of princess, her pride told her that it was exhaustion that made her legs give-way, not like she was actually kneeling. That would be ridiculous! Abeline Froust didn't bow to anyone, she was the best. So yeah, her whole body trembling, and her skin feeling like she had a thousand pinpricks of ants running down it... just staring at this Princess.... no... nonono!

Abeline turned her head away, she pulled her legs together and sat like a proper lady, from the chest down, she was the picture from grace and form. She grasped her own hands to stop from trembling. Now though... anything was possible. Her body filled with hope, bitter and sweet tasting. It was hunger, really, that was all it was.

Froust did not get awed by other people, she was the awe-er! And she was just tired and hungry for human flesh and that was why she was on her a** like a bad zombie who was definitely not feeling a need to bow down. She was tired... yes. And these people were weirdos- and she didn't care that she was the living dead, these guys were strange and.... and... well they would probably taste good with spaghetti sauce. Yes, she was a cunning zombie, waiting on them to let their guard down so she could nibble on some choice body parts!

Abeline's little force of fantasy wasn't fooling her, or probably anyone else.
PostPosted: Tue Dec 15, 2009 6:03 pm

Or the Queen. Serenity was reaching forward to Abeline now, saying: "I see. Metaria's magic. Ugly and simple." She took Abeline's ruined hands in her own, and suddenly they were glowing; the woman was saying, "Opal Crystal of the Zodiac, answer my plea!" and suddenly she was in terrible pain.

It was brief but horrifying; muscle reworking itself, skin. Blood. Her heart beating frantically like a bird in a cage. Abeline's knees buckled again, but Serenity helped her up; and Abeline Froust reworked herself to -- from her zombie form -- to something that was living, once more. Hair. Skin. Teeth. A head. (Thanks, Sue.) Serenity's blue eyes half-closed as she sank down to the floor with Abeline in tow, every moment making her more recognisable, back to the pretty girl she really was. Panting and alive.

Well.

"You're still cursed," said Serenity. "Only your Princess can cleanse you. But I can -- take away some of the evil that Metaria commits. Here. Let me help your friend."

She was laying hands on Lucas now. Lucas had looked pretty crappy before, and he was still unconscious. All of them watched as Serenity murmured underneath her breath, and the same process applied to the sleeping boy -- she knelt up when he was whole again, wiped her forehead, and looked at the rest.

"All right," she said in her musical voice. She went to sit in one of the crappy plastic gym chairs, and gave it the dignity of a throne. "I'll give you what you want most. Answers to questions. Go ahead."

Elke watched the Queen with an expression that was a mix of horror and wonder. Opal Crystal? Abeline--she could see Abeline now as the gut-wrenching transformation took place--had a crystal? Was she a senshi, too? Big green eyes followed them to the floor, then to Lucas's tranformation as well. Feeling a little lost, she thought: I should be scared. A little distantly, she was, but that feeling of warmth the person in the Princess exuded...

The moment she said questions were allowed, Elke hurried over and said, "She's not gone forever? You promise she's not gone forever?" Questions about Charonite and Crystals and why in the world the Queen didn't have her own body could wait. Was Serenade coming back? Would she ever come back? Ever?

Probably she didn't need to convince the Queen that she needed her Princess, but she tried anyway: "She's my best friend. Please make sure she's okay!"
