Playstation seems adamant on starting a new franchise with this one: PS2 classics redefined with high-definition graphics for the PS3. God of War was the first to come on this list with many more rumoured to be joining it (The top 2 Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 and Ico & Shadow of Collossus).
Do you think this is a good idea on Sony's part to do? Re-sell you games you've already bought, played, completed, traded in, bought again because you missed them and now sit on your shelf collectiong dust. Or do you think it's obvious cashing-in? If you do like them then what would you like to see follow? (Keep in mind it'll be mostly stuff that was at the time exclusive to the PS3 to join the bandwagon).

Well, and this comes back from the Uncharted 2 thread, if you're the kind of person that only replays his games once, then you should just rent. The only games I ever trade in are the ones I KNOW I'll never play again, and most of them I never even bothered beating in the first place. And chances are I don't miss them. All my essentials, my Silent Hills, Metal Gears, Mortal Kombats I'd never trade in. Because I know I'll play them again. And even the odd game here and there, like Def Jam Fight for New York, or Indigo Prophecy, or Rule of Rose... I love those games, and I'll never trade them in, because yes, there will be a time when I miss them.
I haven't bought the GoW collection yet, but I do intend to. And when I do, it's not like I'm gonna play it through only once. God of War isn't my most replayed franchise, but I've beaten it at least 3 times each, including Chains of Olympus. And I definitely intend to replay it again. I know I'll be replaying the games once before actually playing God of War 3.
Metal Gear Solid is a whole other deal. If I could get the PS2 MGS games in HD... Man, one could only dream. I have MGS2 and 3 in original versions and the Essential Collection, and I'd still dish out my money for the HD versions of 2 and 3. So yeah, in that respect, I totally want it.
But it also comes down to presentation. I mean, Shadow of the Colossus was an epic game, but it was so gorgeous that it was plagued by famerate issues. The game ran at, what, 15 FPS, it looked like. If you could get that game in HD at 60 FPS, it would change the experience drastically. Not just visually, but functionally too, because then the game can actually run smoothly.
But it's obviously not something to do for ALL classics. I mean, games like Grand Theft Auto 3 were groundbreaking, extremely fun titles that were loved by all. But if you release GTA3 in HD, it's only going to accentuate its graphical flaws. And it wasn't the best looking PS2 game to begin with.
So it's definitely not something that Sony should do liberally, but with a careful selection process, it could be a good idea.
But going back to paragraph 1, if you're the kind of person that only plays through a game once... Or even multiple times, but then decides to trade it in because you've accomplished everything you could... And then decide upon its re-release that you miss it... It's really not Sony's problem to keep track of people like that. As I see it, the GoW Collection, (and any other collection they may release) is for those who missed out on it the first time around, or for those who are really hardcore about their quality and want their favorite games to look the best they could on that big HDTV. I've already bought a few of my favorite DVDs in Blu-Ray format, so obviously I'm one of the latter. And heck, I missed out on the Prince of Persia Sands of Time trilogy. Now they're making a new one. If before it comes out, they'll release a PoP Collection in HD, I'll gladly buy it and experience the original trilogy in best possible quality.

In some ways it's a good thing since I can't play PS2 games on my PS3 (like most of us here in the UK) and if people have sold their PS2s along with games, then it's a nice idea to buy them in hi-res...but it depends on the price. I'm not willing to pay more then £15 for them...

Well, they ARE planning to release PS2 games on the PS Network in the same way they've been releasing PS1 games, so those are coming as well in the future. But some games I'd love to play in HD. If they released Silent Hill 2 and 3 in HD, I'd buy them in an instant.

Thankfully I put off buying a PS3 until my friend in Gamestation secured one of the 60Gb premiums with the backwards compatibility for me, so the issue for me isn't playing the games. Admittedly I didn't pay any money to get God of War collection imported since my flatmate let it slip that he's got me it for my Christmas, but I do agree that selling the game for full-price whack when you could pick up the actual PS2 versions for half the price is a bit shady. Then again I am a self-admitting trophy-hoarder so that's what attracts me to getting the chance to replay God of War.

Well, the thing is... The GoW collection is only $40 - $50... At least here. GoW games for PS2 would be like $20 each... So the difference isn't really that big. I mean, you are getting BOTH of them in that package. And even if you do have like a $10 difference, or whatever, well, you ARE getting HD picture, 7.1 surround sound, and if you give a crap, yes, trophies.

Going by exchange rates and the general fact that North America get games cheaper, you're getting ripped off. A friend of mine got me God of War 1 & 2 for me for £20 together about this time last year, where the collection will more than likely come in at £30-£40 once it hits our shores, plus the £20 for two will drop lower once it's out since it'll be considered less sought once God of War collection is on sale. So either you've got some stingy dealing going on your side of the pond or you're way off on your pricing of the PS2 games.

Lucky smile they were just too expensive and in too short supply for me to get one. In the US they have an emulator you can download but Sony say they can't make that work for the UK versions...I don't know why.

But the official retail value for GOW2 is 20.00. The exchange rate is $20 = £11.55 So it's almost double. So it pretty much makes sense. How much is the GoW collection over there?

Well, most games here are $60 - $70. But GoW collection is $40. So it's obviously less expensive than typical PS3 games.
