Has anyone else noticed that Count Olaf is becoming less formidable? I reread the first book on a whim, and WOW, Count Olaf was a worthy adversary there! It even mentions how Violet realized that the problem in dealing with Count Olaf is that not only is he evil and cruel, but he is evil, cruel, and clever.

In the later books, he becomes sillier and more and more ridiculous, finally reaching a climax of stupidity in the end of the twelfth book, where he horribly misspells the word 'poison', admitting that he always wondered how the Baudelaires did all the stuff they did.

What went wrong? He used to be smart and evil, and now he's just... rude and unkempt. I mourn the death of a wonderful villain who stretched the Baudelaires' limits. What about you?

Book the First, only because he was so imaginative in his schemes

Well..he is getting old. Also, the Baudelaires are getting much stronger, making Olaf seem slow and stupid.

I think you have a point there. Maybe Lemony Snicket is doing that to emphasize the growth of the Baudelaires' brain power and stamina.... hehe.... stamina.... xd

I do prefer the earlier Count Olaf, but I understand why he became the way he is in the 12th. The Baudelaires themselves matured and even if Olaf almost gained "respect" for how they dealt with his schemes, it was pretty necessary for him to change. If that makes any sense.. whee

Yeah, he was bad in book the first, hit a climax in book the second, and then got more and more silly as the books progressed.
I loved him in the second book, where he curses at the children and threatens them with a knife, and the first book, where he strikes Klaus.

He does seem more vile and formidable as it goes on, but I don't think I like it as much.

He gets more and more vile, and less and less formidable, if you see what I mean. *sigh* Sad, sad world...

I think Count Olaf's 'degregation' makes sense. If you consider that he's always on the run, going a bit squirrely... well, it's common in that situation. I don't expect anyone to get this reference (I'm Manitoban) but I'll post it anyway. Louis Riel: He went pretty much nuts by the time he made it to trial, just 'cause he was constantly in hiding and having to dodge the authorities all the time. I'm sure it's happened to others. Oooo: better reference: The movie 'Catch me if You Can' the con artist is nuts by the end of the film.
