Sort of. There are some parts I take literally, others which I don't.

No. It's just meant to be a teaching tool, not fact.

If you are a Muslim, how many of you when you read the Quran take the passages literally? How many of you have more liberal interpretations? Just wondering; I'd imagine it to be similar to how some Christians take the bible literally and some just use it as a teaching tool, but I don't know many Muslims so I don't know for sure.

some of it can be taken literally. But most of it is related to other verses, and some also need interpretation, and it's not that easy because some needs to be looked from the original language (Arabic). Although most translation are right, but there may be some misinterpretation because of the limit of vocabulary.

This.

I try my best to follow the Qur'an as literally as I can, but Shinigami took the words from my mouth xD

i'm not Muslim, however i have a Qu'ran of my own, and read it when i find the time. currently i am still on the 2nd Sutra. ._.

i can't just take everything only litterally, it's not my style in learning anything. i have to consider every possibility. the Qu'ran is especially difficult to absorb because there is just so much to read into about it! gonk it says so much in so few words! crying i freaking love it!

In a lot of instances you can't. For example (I don't remember the exact quote or where in the Qur'an it is, but I remember seeing something along the lines of it) :

"One may have on himself a wife, as he may two, or three, but if he cannot care and respect them equally, he may only hold one."

This seems like an easy statement to interpret: Polygamy is morally acceptable. But, some also claim that one cannot be treated completely equal (esp. on a status of love), regardless of race, religion, or sex. So they say that this quote disapproves of Polygamy.

It depends on your interpretation.

I take it literally, word for word. But only in the Arabic, not ones in other languages because they were translated by humans and so would have human flaws in their translations.

It's meant to be obeyed.
We can't just take it straight like that.
I also agree with Shinigami on the translation part.
Even translated, we can't just absorb it just like that.
The Qur'an can interpret more than one thing by a mere word.
I know, mother of headaches.
Hence, for those who wants to truly absorb it truthfully, it's better to find a good teacher.

It's surah, not sutra.
Ahahah. I know what you mean.
It's absorbing, especially the part where stories are involved.
I particularly like Ar-Rahman.
Just splashes you with cold water everytime.

Arabic is a Human Language, too. sweatdrop though, I'm guessing that you mean the problem isn't so much the language, but the possible errors in translation?

Totally understood.
My aunt marries an Indian muslim-go figure.
I pretty much has a vague understanding of most basic religions.

I study various religions, as best as I can. I like to have knowledge. smile

ya know, I have a thread in the LD about being Hindu. I'm hoping for it not to fizzle out, seeing as I create it yesterday. would you be interested in seeing it? ^_^

We're similar in that regard.
I'd love too. Link me.
I'm a muslim and I just like learning about stuff.
Including things such as Egyptian gods etc...
I'm being chatty again...

BTW, I can also answer the question you gave to joie-rhan.
First of, how does language came to be? (seriously, I want to know too)
Even if men creates them, the inspiration came from Allah.
In this case, Arabic is a language Allah had chosen as a medium to humans-also the language chosen to be spoken in heaven (in Islam).
It'll be a loooong story to elaborate.
I'll be needing a dictionary as well.

here is the link. [click me!]

and, that's a little silly. because I think that in such a case, all languages are equally chosen mediums for expressing and communicating. I don't believe that Heaven will use any physical speech -- we'll just understand eachother, like telepathically or something.

it's entirely silly to think that out of all the languages in the world, this one is "God's favourite".
