It was the night before Christmas and a certain nymph and wyvern had decided to go all out to celebrate such a festive time. A small pine tree in the corner of the living room was heavily decorated with the brothers' favorite colors and ornaments; silver and green streamers, blue and violet Christmas baubles, crimson-striped candy canes, gold and emerald-colored bead garlands, and glittering tinsel hung from every branch. Indeed, the tree was almost as flamboyant as the two brahs that had decorated it.

Verdant was dressed in a long blood-red coat with silvery faux-fur trim and many a silver fleur-de-lis embroidered all over it. Two holly branches were braided into his hair and ribbon he wore around his neck was adorned by a single bell nestled in mistletoe.

Orpheus wore a black coat with gold faux-fur and a large wyvernesque fleur-de-lis on his back shimmered as it caught even the slightest bit of light. Gilded holly branches wrapped around his head like a crown, supported by the three horns on his head. Every single piece of gold ribbon tied to his neck, arms, legs, and wrists was decorated with bells and mistletoe. Together, they looked pretty damn awesome- though they'd probably look ridiculous on any other day of the year.

"So, when're Dorian and Marius getting here?" Orpheus inquired as he listened to the Carol of the Bells.

"Pretty soon, I'm guessing. I just hope they don't bring fruitcake. Fruitcake is gross. Say, call Shade too; I'm pretty sure he and his mom'll be spending Christmas together, but make sure the invite is still open."

"Alrighty," answered Orpheus as he picked up the phone and dialed Shade's number. After all, Christmas was a time for sharing- and Shade needed to share his gaming expertise with Orphy before that DS went flying out the window.

On the night before Christmas you'd expect Dorian to be much more lively than he was. As it was, he was highly subdued from his usual flamboyant dress, not out of distress like he'd been for Shade and Nyxie, but out of depression. Claudia's health was not improving, despite Marius's best efforts to help him fix her and lengthen her life span just a bit more. She'd be completely gone by the end of January.

Instead of some kind of sexy santa outfit like he normally would've donned, he'd opted for a pure white turtle neck sweater under neath a dark brown coat with a fur ruffle. His hair was tied back messily, and he had eye shadow on to disguise the tired lines. Marius frowned as they approached Verdant's apartment door, though he didn't look as morose as he wanted to, what with being laden with so many gifts. There was one each for Shade and Verdant, one each for Nyxie and Orpheus, and Marius's gift for Dorian. He'd gone out shopping for the first time alone to go get it. Dorian's gift for Marius, likewise, was nestled safely in Dorian's hands as he knocked on the door.

Smiling at his companion, he prepped himself for the fake smile he sometimes showed his loved ones when he was too tired or upset to give them a real smile. He was both today, but in the back of his mind, he hoped that Verdant and Shade would change that. Marius snorted a little with disapproval, but looked away and put on a calm mask like usual. He was getting a little run down from always having to be the strong one in the family anymore.

“But...I thought that you'd be home this year.” Despite his efforts, Shade wasn't able to keep the tone of disappointment from his voice as he spoke to his mother over the phone. “Didn't you book it off...?”

“I'm sorry sweetheart, someone messed up with the schedule.” Luna didn't sound like she was any happier about working her shift than her son was. It had been, well, a while since the two of them had spent a holiday together, and the boy had been looking forward to spending it with his mother this year. It seemed that Luna's job had once again thwarted their plans, however. "I'll be home tomorrow night. We'll have a nice dinner together then, okay? Just the two of us." Well, he supposed that was better than nothing. "I have to go now, hun. I love you."

"I love you too, Mom..." he said softly as he took a seat on the couch. "And okay...I'll see you tomorrow. Night..." Shade hung up and sighed, leaning back on the couch. Well, it looked like he'd be spending Christmas alone again...well, he had the cat, but it was hard having a conversation with Gidget. He liked having someone who could respond with something other than mewing. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out Nyx's spark and watched as bubbles rose off the stone. He'd been hoping that the essentic would emerge by the time Christmas rolled around, but here they were, December 24th, and still no proto. So, here he was, spending another Christmas by himself. 'At least I'll get to see her tomorrow, I guess...'

The ringing of the phone snapped Shade from his thoughts. Blinking in confusion, he lifted it up again and quickly recognized Verdant's number. Perhaps he was calling to say merry Christmas? The boy answered, lifting the phone to his ear. "Hello?"

"Hey there, Shade! It's me, Orpheus. I was just wondering if you'd like to come over for a little while? Dorian and Marius are coming over too, so I think maybe it'd be fun if we all hung out." He heard the knocking on the door and motioned for Verdant to go get it. "Speak of the devil, there they are. So, think you can make it? I can go pick you up and we'll walk home together, yeah?" It didn't matter that it was Christmas Eve, there were still plenty of uncouth vagrants roaming about the streets, just like the one who had attacked Rhian that time. He would not have the same thing happen to Shade if he could help it.

Verdant, beaming happily and ready to get comfortable under some mistletoe with Dorian, ran to the door and escorted his guests inside with a nice helping of holiday cheer; a kiss on the cheek for Dorian, a big hug for Marius, and a merry smile fpr the both of them. "Merry Christmas, guys! Come on in, make yourselves comfortable." Before Marius or Dorian could protest, Verdant scooped up their gifts and neatly placed them under the tree with the other gifts. Like a hummingbird hopped up on industrial-strength nectar, Verdant made off into the kitchen and came back with a platter full of gingerbread cookies, angel's food cake with peppermint icing, and two mugs of hot chocolate.

"Help yourselves, you two!" Verdant quipped as he gave Dorian another kiss. Did he notice how tired Dorian looked? Of course. Did he mention it? Of course not. It was Christmas Eve; if Dorian and Marius needed some cheering up and comfort, he'd find it here.

A small smile spread over Shade's face as Orpheus relayed the invitation to him - the boy would certainly enjoy spending Christmas with everyone at Verdant's place. It wasn't like he was doing much tonight anyway; if he couldn't spend Christmas with his mother, maybe he could at least spend time with the other people that he cared about!

"Yeah, I'm not doing anything tonight." the boy said softly into the receiver. "Hanging out sounds great." Actually, it sounded better than great - he was actually quite excited about not having to spend Christmas alone this year. "And okay; I'll wait down in the lobby for you. Does that sound alright?"
