Daisuke: *as she catches up* I wasn't fooling about the rabbit, males don't lie where food is concerened. *grins*
Aysu: *Looks embarrassed* I'm uh... Well, I've never had wild food before, Daisuke... Just so you know.
Daisuke: *laughs* Wild-food...well you're in for a treat! Nothin' like it with the blood still pumpin'! Means it's fresh! *he slowed down* You'll have fun...if you're not starving at the time the hunt's part of the fun.
Aysu: *Ears perk up* Well, I'm not starving, I hope you aren't. I'll try my very best to follow your lead. *Nods*
Daisuke: *chuckles* If I were *that* hungry I'd not take a pet on her first hunt...no offense....goes for wild puppies too...they've just never done it. *hopes that didn't offend her*
Aysu: *Touches her nose to his cheek* Uh-huh. If our positions were switched, I think I'd share your opinion. I've never really had the chance to learn before and it's really nice of you to let me come along.
Daisuke: *tail wags lightly* Sure...now, d'you know what to smell for? Looking's the easier part...tracks, and s**t. *grins as he raises his nose to the air*
Aysu: Kind of. I know the smell of rabbits, but anything else is beyond me really. *Raises her own nose and turns her head a bit*
Daisuke: Daisuke nodded. "To the left a bit...take a big whiff. Musky, delicious, mountain hare. Idoubt they venture too close to people." He explained keeping his voice low. "Stay low." He added as he began to move silently, and swiftly. His movements were careful, planned, and precise,
Aysu: Aysu turned her head in the indicated direction and flinched a bit in surprise at the different scent. "No, not really. Mostly the average bunny, you know," she replied and followed his directions. She crouched low and padded as quietly as she could next to him. She was used to walking quietly, because if she didn't, she might wake up Kumiko when she was taking naps.
Daisuke: Daisuke nodded, careful of the brittle leaves underfoot. He stopped shortly at a small smattering of droppings. "Fresh...it's close." He whispered. "Once we find them...I'll sneak around and wink, once you see me...chase 'em toward me and go ahead and try to grab one...it smells of male of there's bound to be more than one." He explained before continuing on.
Aysu: Aysu swallowed slowly. She didn't want to tell Daisuke, but she honestly didn't think she'd be able to actually kill one. She just... didn't think she had it in her. She nodded anyways, though, choosing to stay silent rather than risk speaking as they continued in the direction of the scent.
Daisuke: After a while the scent was stronger than ever and behind a mossy log they could see a pair of brown, black tipped hare ears. The male grinned. "Shh...wait for me." He said before slipping off. It took a lot of finesse as he was going to have to be dangerously close to upwind. But after fifteen minutes of working the rabbits he made it, blue eyes gleaming. They were preoccupied with clover. He poked his head above the weeds and bramble before shooting Aysu a wink.
Aysu: Aysu watched him as best she could. He was rather good at that, which shouldn't have surprised her as he was a wild dog, raised out here and on the land. It put her own life a bit in perspective, really. She really was still something of a puppy. And then he stopped and she caught his wink. He hadn't told her much more than chasing the hares towards him, so she decided just to go with it. She lunged from her cover at the hares, attempting to make sure that they headed towards Daisuke instead of scattering in different directions.
Daisuke: Daisuke exploded from the brush flinging his head to the right, and closing on a hare. He dropped it and ran a few more paces, turned sharply to his left to get another. The rabbit feigned and attempted to leap over his back. He managed to go a leaping twist and caught it's head in his jaws. When he closed his mouth it gave a satisfying pop and crunch. He dropped the rabbit before collecting the other and catching his breath.
Aysu: Aysu stopped when Daisuke had grabbed the first one, watching with slightly wide eyes as he went from one to the other. She heard the pop and crunch and couldn't help but flinch a little bit. She liked to chase and play with the rabbits at home and in the park... She swallowed slowly and approached the other dog with measured paces. "So... So that's... how it's done, huh?" she asked softly, her jaw strained a bit. Maybe this hadn't been a good idea after all.
Daisuke: He licked a bit of the blood and gore off of lips lips and nodded, still panting a bit. "Yep..." He nosed the less mangled one to her. "Dig in..." He said before bending his head and lapping at a bit of the gore that pooled in his hare's shattered eye socket. He carefully picked up what was left of the eye and swallowed it. "Nothing like fresh hare...." He said, not registering her look or the timbre of her voice. Afterall, in his mind, what could be better than a fresh kill?
Aysu: Aysu watched him and looked to the dead hare and sighed softly. She took a slow step away from the hare's body and sat down. "Daisuke... I... I can't. It's not... Thank you for teaching me but..." she trailed off there, looking away from him and her shoulders slumped a bit. She couldn't deny the thrilling rush she had felt chasing them, but seeing the broken, lifeless bodies...
Daisuke: He looked up, some skin and fur in his mouth. "Whu?" He spat it out. "*Oh*..." He gave her a somewhat sheepish look. "I can just...burry these and get them later..." He told her as he rose to his paws again.
Aysu: Her eyes were closed, so she missed his look. She heard him stand, though and she shrugged lightly. "I don't mind if you eat, Daisuke... I just, can't, myself," she replied and scooted a little bit more from the one that he had given her. She felt horrible that he had made the effort and she couldn't bring herself to even try it. Maybe they should take it back to his pack, to someone who probably needed it.
Daisuke: Daisuke shrugged. "Eh, I can take them back with me...I understand. It looks awfully different than kibble, eh?" He said, trying to put on a good-natured smile. 'Pet, she's a pet...remember that...' he reminded himself before picking them up. "I'll just drop these off...feel free to tag along...I can eat later."
Aysu: Aysu looked up with a half-hearted smile and touched her nose to his cheek again. "Thanks for understanding, Dais- Dai. You're a really good friend," she replied honestly with a small nod. She decided to stay with him a little bit longer, enjoying his company and walked with him in silence.
Daisuke: As they walked his mind was running. Out of the coner of his eye there was a flash of silver. The scent of hot, fresh gun powder caught his attention. "Hide." He hissed, dropping the rabbits and diving behind a bush.
Aysu: Aysu jumped in surprise at his quick actions and did her best to follow him as quickly as she possibly could. She certainly wasn't as fast as he was, nor did she catch what was wrong. But she trusted him enough to bolt after him, returning to the bushes where she looked at him in startled confusion.
"Human Hunter": The hunter had noticed a bit of blue fur out of the corner of his eye. He then saw the dead rabbits and bent over with a grunt before picking them up by the ears, his rifle slung over a shoulder. "Damn dogs..." He grumbled before attatching the hares by the ears to his hunting belt. He then looked around. "Bounty for them things..." He mused aloud.
Aysu: Aysu's ears flicked back at the hunter's gruff words and crouched low next to Daisuke. "I think he'd hurt us..." she whispered so very softly. Her crystal colored eyes glanced at the male beside her and tried to gain some confidence from him. "What do we do?"
Daisuke: "Shhh..." He hissed, trying to think, and quickly. "I'll distract him and you run...I know the forest better." He reasoned, his voice barely auidable to cannines. "This whole thing is my fault..." he added.
Aysu: Aysu frowned, narrowing her eyes at him and his idea. "But you could get hurt," she whispered, her voice almost inaudible. That was the last thing she wanted. If Daisuke got her, or even killed, while he was giving her a chance to get away, she would never forgive herself. He had other dogs who needed him and she couldn't deny the fact that she cared for him, at least a little bit. She couldn't bear for him to risk himself for her.

The hunter raised his rifle into the air and fired once. "Come here dogs!" He called, whistling. "I ain't gonna hurt ya!" He reached into his pocket. "Want some sammich?" He called again, pulling out a wrapped ham deli sub. He took a bite of it.
Daisuke glanced to Aysu, "When he's focused on me run, and I'll catch up to you later." With that the male leaped out of the bushes, his eyes blazing. "OOOOOOOOOOOI YOU!" He snarled as he landed in front of the man. The hunter startled and fumbled with his rifle. He cocked it and Diasuke took a few steps back and ran behind a tree. The hunter fired and the bullet richaced off the tree and skidded to a halt in the damp earth.
"I'm gonna get'cha mutt." He hunter snapped as he reloaded and cocked the gun.
The retriever walked out from behind the tree, his head low, posture somewhat demure. His tail was tucked and the tip wagged weakly, his ears were pressed back, flat. He knew he was taking a massive risk, but it was that or let both of them be shot.

Aysu didn't want Daisuke to be a distraction so that she could get away. He could get hurt and that wasn't something she could really deal with on her conscience. But he was up and gone before she could protest. He was snarling and confronting the human. What else was she to do? If she tried to help, she was more likely to make it more difficult on Daisuke to protect her. And she knew he would. Pet or no, she was still his friend, and he seemed to want to watch out for her when she was around.
So she grit her teeth and sprang from her hiding place, running away from the area. She didn't get far when the gunshot rang out. Her heart jumped and she turned around, circling back towards the hunter and Dai. If he had gotten shot... Her eyes narrowed and her lips pulled back angrily from her teeth.

"Well ain't you the biggest suck-up I've ever seen." The hunter laughed.
Daisuke did something he thought he'd never do and whined, looking as pitiful as possible. The gears in his head were turning. 'What would a pet do?' He thought, before going against everything he knew and rolling onto his side exposing his stomach and wagging his tail.
The hunter seemed somewhat puzzled by the dog's reactions and just watched him for a moment. "R'you wild, boy?" He asked.
Daisuke's tail thumped even harder and he gave a very cute little 'woof' before shifting back onto his stomach, still in a submissive position.
The hunter jumped when he saw Aysu. He raised his gun and pointed it directly at her and started to take aim. "Too bad your pelt's pretty...the red'll really mess that up." He said with a grin.
Daisuke didn't hesitate and leaped at the man, knocking him over. His jaws had a tight grip on his throat, teeth putting extreme pressure on the delicate skin. He pulled his lips back in a snarl, his eye blazing with hatred, his look bordering on demonic.
The fall caused the hunter's gun to discharge into the canopy of the forest. He was in no position to re-c**k the rifle and instead settled on trying to beat Diasuke in the side with it, legs flailing, as he tried to push Daisuke's muzzle away from his throat. The man screamed as the gun made thick sounds against the retriever each time it struck him.
Daisuke's growling intensified as he put a little more pressure on the man's throat, but he still hadn't quite broken the skin. His eyes locked with Aysu's. The expression instantly grew soft, and pleading as if asking her to leave. He might be able to get away once he let the man go, but he wasn't about to do that with her there. He turned back to the man, his eyes growing instantly cold. He snarled again, as the hunter continued to hit him and push at his throat, but the dog had the advantage of postion and leverage.
The hunter's strength was waining.

Aysu took on a pose she never had taken on before when she returned to the clearing, her hackles raised, ears back, tail low, and lips pulled back as she growled. She heard the mans words and faltered slightly at them. How could a human want to hurt them so much? Dogs were supposed to be friends with men. Her eyes widened as the gun pointed at her, but suddenly Daisuke was on the man.
The small female flinched at the sound of the gun, dodging to one side lightly, unaware that it had shot upwards. She caught Daisuke's gaze, knew what he wanted. Leave him again? She thought he'd gotten shot, how could she leave him again when that danger was still present?
Her eyes narrowed at the beating Dai was receiving and so she did the first thing that came to mind that would stop both the beating and take away the danger of being shot away as well. She quickly stepped forward and latched onto a wooden part of it, her teeth gouging into it just a bit as she yanked once, twice, three times. If she could get the gun away, they'd be safer getting away.

The gun was wrenched from the hunter's hand and he began thrashing and beating at Daisuke with renewed vigour. His fingers connected with Daisuke's left eye.
Out of instinct Daisuke's jaws clenched slightly creating shallow, bloody pock marks on the man's throat. He leaped away from the man, now that his gun was taken from his possession and looked to Aysu. "Go!" He wasn't about to start running first. He knew all too well humans often carried knives. At least the outdoor-sy types he usually ran into. A knife, however, posed him no threat as he was much faster than he man could ever hope to be. His his vision was blurry and it began to tear. There would be time for him to feel the pain later, once his adrenaline stopped surging.

Aysu fell back a bit when the weapon finally slipped from the man's grasp and she gave Dai one last look, asking him to hurry and be careful, before she turned and ran off into the forest again, the gun still in her jaws.
It made for difficult running, but she didn't want to leave it behind for someone worse to find it, or someone to get hurt by it. After a ways, she slowed to a stop and looked behind her for Daisuke. Please let him be okay, she thought, searching for him with her eyes as she took in short, quick breaths through her nose.

As soon as he saw her turn to leave he started running, he was half tempted to finish off the hunter, hoping she would be none the wiser. Then he thought of all the blood that would result and headed off to follow her.
He soon saw a bit of light blue and knew, instantly that he'd caught up to her. As he slowed to a walk, his eye began to throb and sting. He clamped his eye closed and saw flashes of white, fuzzy light in it. Daisuke shook his head for a moment or two, the eye still watering, and now a bit red.
"He's not following us." He said simply, while trying to regain his composure.

Aysu dropped the gun and bounded to his side, nuzzling the side of his face gently. It took her a moment to compose herself and step back, and when she did, she saw how his eye was teary and red. "Is that from him hitting you?" she asked softly, a soft whine in her voice as she tipped her head in a slight nod towards his eye. She really hated that human. They'd done nothing to him at all to provoke his original threat. Now she had a better understanding of why some dogs hated humans so much.
"I'm sorry I came back and messed things up. I just heard the shot and thought... that you might have been..." Aysu sighed and shook her head. She thought he'd been hurt. What else could she have done?

"Mhmmm...but I've had worse. I'll be all right, I'm just glad you're okay, Aysu." He said gently as he returned her nuzzle somewhat gingerly. He gave a low wag in his tail. "And you didn't mess anything up. You were a massive help back there." He paused when her voice trailed off.
"But I wasn't! See?" He asked as he gave a slow turn for her to look. "I'm okay, and you're okay. That's all that matters."
He hoped, he hadn't just lied to her, and he'd not have any damage to his eye.

Aysu smiled when he said she'd been a big help to him. And when he turned, she got a good look at him and nodded slowly. "Well, your eye looks tender, but I suppose you're right," she agreed and gave him another careful nuzzle. "I'm glad you're okay."
She turned away after a moment and walked to the gun, putting a paw on the wooden stock. She knew guns were helpful, and she knew they were dangerous. They could be used to get food for humans, protect the family. But when used by the wrong humans... "What do we do with this? I don't want someone else finding it." She glanced back at Dai, ears perked just a bit towards him.

"Of course I'm right." He said tipping her a playful, teasing nod to try and lighten the mood. Sure, he was rather shaken but the bear that chased both he and Zehn had been a bit more frightening. Humans tended to be slow and clumsy, not to mention, in his experience, stupid.
He looked to the gun and muzzle wrinkled in distaste. "I don't know. I suppose we can take it out of our way and leave it in some bushes or something." He knew one thing was certain. He didn't want it anywhere near their den or their territory, which was the direction they were heading.
The encounter today only reinforced what he knew and thought of humans. In the back of his mind, he wondered if this helped Aysu see the world how he saw it. He also, wondered if it bothered her.
"Are you going to be okay? About the human, I mean." He asked.

Aysu stared down at her paw on the human weapon for a moment as she pondered his question. Was she okay? "I think I am. I mean, I knew there were bad humans out there, or dangerous ones, I'd just never met one before. I think I understand a bit more, now, why some dogs really hate humans," she paused there to look up at him, tilting her head slightly to one side. "But that doesn't mean they're all bad."
Thinking about that made her realize it was probably time for her to be getting back. "I need to be getting back now, anyways. I can leave it in a bush on the way."

"I guess it doesn't." He nodded. "Are you sure you want to take that?" He asked looking to the gun. His eyes went to the teeth marks Aysu had made in the wood. He expected such fierceness out of Verizehn but he'd never once thought that plucky little golden could manage such a thing. Apparently anyone could manage if they felt they needed to.
He was somewhat disheartened to hear that she was going to leave, but nodded again. "Do you think you can make it home before dark? If not...I'd be more than happy to walk you." He offered.

Aysu smiled and nodded. "I'd like it if you'd walk with me, even if it's only for a little bit," she replied and bent down to pick up the gun by the stock again, knowing the wood would be easier on her teeth. She straightened and gave him what could only be called a smile with her eyes, and started heading towards her home.
