Dufi was a strange little cub and it was no different today. Today she was sitting on the beach facing the waves that crashed against the shore. She wasn't looking at them, well not only looking no, she was having a conversation. This wasn't unusual for her and her mother worried about her quite often but she was content, after all the sea always spoke back!
"I know, all those new lions joining and a leopard. You like leopards?" Then there was a pause and it looked as if she was listening before she started talking again.
"Yes I suppose, I see nothing wrong either it's just different. I think leopards are cool, she did the rites too, I watched her!" She sounded proud that she had watched all the new lions and leopard take their rites. She had sat with her mother who was over seeing it all with Tamu.
"Yes Tamu is a good leader, I like Tamu she is cool."
The conversation continued and didn't sound as if it were one sided at all other then the fact no one but Dufi could ever seem to hear the replies.

It could have been said that oddity ran in the family, though perhaps more so in some than in others.
Of the three siblings, it may have been Kainu'u that was most like their father, in both appearance and manner. Like his father, he was the quintessential surfer bum (if lions could surf). Laid back, easy going, lazy, at his happiest when lounging on the sand or swimming in the crystal blue water.
Today found him wandering the shore, proudly carrying a seashell he had found. He would pause every few moments to paw at the sand, seeking to unearth whatever may lay just beneath, sniffing at whatever bits of seaweed he passed.
Yipe!
It seemed that patch of seaweed had not been unoccupied. It's resident, a small crab, had reached out to snap at the invading nose, an act that had sent the cub skittering away while mumbling something about 'being cool'.
But something else had caught his attention. Dufi, what was she doing?

Dufi didn't see her brother coming and even if she did she probably wouldn't have cared too much anyway. She was happily catting about seaweed to the sea now. Apparently the sea was telling her how the seaweed was useful though Dufi looked very confused.
She did however eventually turn around and see him, as it was her confusion meant that she wanted to ask him something.
"Kainu'u do you know what seaweed is for? The sea is very confusing today." She smiled at him before turning back to the waters to ask it again.
"Please I don't understand!" She looked confused, very confused.

"Seems like it's good for hiding crabs."
His nose wrinkled, that had hurt. Sheesh, it wasn't as if he would have hurt the crab, or even knew it was there. He had just been walking the beach, minding his own business, sniffing at a bit of interesting seaweed and WAM! What a grouch.
"What are you doing?"
Head titled curiously, Kai watched his sister. What -was- she doing? Was she talking to someone? But there was no one else here was there? Ah well, to each their own, it didn't bother him if she wanted to talk to herself.
A long stretch, reaching from his toes to his tail, and then he had flopped over in the sand, rolling onto his back, the grouchy crab forgotten. Ah, the sand and surf, how he loved it.

"Hiding crabs?" Hmmm it was a possibility. Seaweed never seemed to do much otherwise, how very very strange.
"What do you think I am doing? I am talking to the sea what else would I be doing silly?" She chuckled and then turned away from the sea to look at her brother.
"What are you doing?" She looked totally innocent as she asked, obviously he was the strange one sticking his nose in seaweed. She flicked her tail behind her before looking up at the sky.
"Isn't the sky so blue, so clear and blue. I wonder if the sky likes talking...." Her head was in the clouds, her head was always in the clouds. Dufi was just one of those girls who hadn't a clue what was going on.

"Yeah? It have anything interesting to say?"
He shifted on his back, tufted tail flicking in the sands. The young lion looked as if he could have come from the sea himself, bright blue hide matched with an equally bright yellow in his mane. He could have been a tropical fish living on the shore, maybe he was, he loved the water enough to be.
True, he was odd, but at least he wasn't the one talking to the sea. As beautiful as it was, the sea did not speak, at least -he'd- never heard it speak.
"Dunno, why don't you try it."
Not that he thought the sky could speak either. But if his sister wanted to believe it could, where was the harm? To each their own.

"Not really, Sea is being boring today. I might try talking to the sky later to see if it replies." She looked at her brother with a stupid smile on her maw. Oh yes she was a crazy thing.
"Do you want to play? If the Sea is going to be boring I am going to be bored!" She let out a sigh as if the sea not talking was the worst thing that could happen and it would mean she would just have to be normal for a minute or two and actually play! She did like playing though.
"We could build a castle, kinda like what mumma said father does!" She hadn't seen her father build stuff with sand but her mother had told her that he did when they had a conversation about Dufi's oddities.

"Maybe it'll talk to you later."
So she was bored because the sea that couldn't talk wasn't talking? Yeah, he wasn't even going to try to wrap his mind around that one. Not that he was helping at all (if one thought it was a problem, which he didn't), he was the one laying there suggesting she try talking to the sky.
"I guess so, if you want. We could look for some seashells to put on it."
Mound of sand covered in seashells? Sounded like fun to him. Maybe he could even find that piece of driftwood he'd been looking for forever. A BIG piece of driftwood. What was he going to do with it when he found it? Well he hadn't thought that far ahead yet, life was too short to worry about details.

"Okay! That sounds fun! Maybe we can find some big shiny shells!" Maybe the sea will tell her where she could find some shells? She could hope right? Of course if anyone tried to tell her the sea couldn't talk she would roll her eyes and just nod because they were obviously the crazy ones and not her.
"Let's go, we can get big ones and small ones and ooo maybe we will find some with something inside it too!" She had found a shell once and poked it with her paw only for these legs to appear out of it and run off. That was a sad day, she had really liked that shell as well. Hopefully she would find some pretty but empty shells today and they could decorate the mound her brother had just made.

He was shaping the mound of sad with his paws, well at least as well as a lion could, making this part bigger, that part smaller, decorating it with little paw prints. Heh heh, this was fun.
He stepped back for a moment to admire his handiwork, flashing a grin at his sister. Hah, this was better than any sandcastle dad had ever built, yep, it was the best sandcastle ever, or at least it would be. They just needed to find some shells to put on it, oh, and maybe a MOAT, with little fish in it!
"Let's find some shells."
The best part of any sandcastle, clearly. His head lowered to sniff along the beach, pawing at the sand wherever it seemed likely there would be a shell. Ah-hah! An empty scallop shell, white with red stripes on it.
"Found one!"
One down, a billion to go, because that's how many shells a proper castle needed, yep.

Yay shells! Dufi started off straight away, digging at random intervals to see if there were any shells hiding in the sand. It was normal for the sand to try and hide the shells. Dufi was sure it was because they liked playing hide and seek with each other.
"Pretty!" She picked one up in her mouth just as her brother shouted he found one. She smiled and happily trotted over towards him with the shell in her mouth. She dropped it beside him.
"Two shells...." She smiled while stating the obvious before running off again. She went back to where she found the first shell and continued digging. Oh she was in luck the water was bring pretty stones and shells in.
"Over here! Look!" She called out a large smile on her face! She then turned to the sea, "Thank you!!" She called out to the big blue sea before searching all the stones for as many shells as she could find. There were a lot of small ones.

Kainu'u had collected several shells of his own, trotting back to place each one by the sand mound as he found them. He had found several scallop shells in varying shades of red and purple, some snail shells, a few small conchs, and even a sand dollar (that one was going on the top, yep). Combined with the ones his sister had found they definitely had a billion shells!
"Cool!"
Now they could start decorating!
A grin at his sister, he picked up a shell a stuck it on the sand mound. Not that it was easy for a lion cub to stick a shell on a pile of sand, and a sizable chuck of sand slide from the side of the mound to the base. Oops, oh well. They still had a mound, still had shells, and it was still fun!
The process repeated several times, hehe, this was going to be the best sand castle ever!

Dufi smiled as she moved all her shells over to her brother one by one. She of course let her brother decorate them. She would collect the shells and he could add them to the pretty place that is their own sand castle... or what ever they want to call it.
"This will be the best castle ever, so pretty! Ooooo this shell would be good!" She smiled as she found another one, it was white and pearly like, so very pretty.
"'ere" She said with the shell still in her mouth. It needed to be on the castle somewhere, it was so pretty!

He held the shell from his sister in his paw, watching as the sun shone on the pearlescent surface. Neat! Ah, he knew exactly where to put it too. Right...THERE, near the top, in the sunlight. And that sand dollar he had found went right on the very top, like a flag.
Wow, that was an awesome sand castle. It was smaller than he had originally intended (he had knocked a lot of sand loose while decorating it), but it was still AWESOME! Yeah, and it could stay here forever and they'd show everyone just how AWESOME their sand castle was, yep!
Splash.
Huh? Kainu'u looked down, the edge of the rising surf licking at his paws. Maybe they should have built their castle further away from the shore...

"The sea doesn't like our castle, it wants the shells back!" Dufi commented to her brother because of course she could understand the sea.
"If we give the shells back it will leave our castle alone!" She spoke to her brother with such desperation in her voice, she really believed it. Even though the tide was coming in and it wouldn't stop even if they gave the sea the shells, she believed with all her heart that it would stop.
"Come on we need to give them all back!"
