Zeke was a smart kid.

Okay, not really.

Zeke never was the sharpest or brightest crayon in the box, and a few crayons were missing to boot. That was the only explanation one could get for why Zeke had been rummaging through the charred dorms. Luckily for him, the dining room and kitchen were on the ground floor, because there was no way he was going to climb the stairs (even if he could). Most of the food was burned beyond edibility, and the ones in the open seemed to reek of human flesh. Not very appetizing, to say the least. Something had gone horribly, horribly wrong in the refrigerator, and Zeke could barely pry it open. When he did, all that was inside was black goop... something must have exploded. The freezer was in somewhat of a better shape, and Zeke dug through the smoldering boxes until he found an intact one of frozen taquitos.

Zeke knew that stuffing those in the back would pay off! They were soggy, and certainly not frozen anymore, but food was food. Zeke would gladly eat soggy, cold taquitos if it gave him more of a chance to live. He put it under his arm, along with three cans of green beans and a box of already-toasted (ha ha ha) bagels. He picked up his crude weapon (a charred hammer he had found in the maintenance closet) and pushed himself through the wooden boards that had once been a door.

"Hey!" he grinned as he looked at the little group that was outside. They had decided to call themselves Team Columbus. Well, at least Zeke thought it was clever.

The bad news: Sue wasn't exactly a "smart kid" either. Maybe he had a bit more invested into practicalities than Zeke did, but if he was shaping up to be the brains of the group... well, they might be in some trouble.

Things could be worse, though. Other than Bartholomew - who Sue could only assume was with Nihls, and hope that it was in a good, living manner - all the gang had made it through and was here with him. Mackie was nearby, digging through the ash with one paw. He didn't know what he was looking for, though. Stripers had followed Zeke, using her keen nose to try and scent out some food - but there was so much ash, it was hard to distinguish from anything else. Nibs was huddled terrified by the doorway to the dining room, listening for the sounds of anyone approaching.

To normal people, the setup might have been odd - felines working just like the humans, for common survival. But it was Sue that was here, after all. And Piper and Zeke, well... they didn't seem the questioning sort. Too many Disney movies as kids or something, to make them question an animal acting in a time of need.

"We shouldn't stay here long," Sue predicted, grasping the broken leg of a chair. It was as good a weapon as any. "It's too open, y'know? Poor Nibs is going out of her mind, doesn't know which way to watch."

On the bright side of all of this: Sue was pretty god-damned sure that he wasn't going to have to meow on stage in that stupid play anymore.

Yahya was, for the time being, quite nearly attached to Sue's side. It was clear he wasn't exactly equipped to fight the zombie apocalypse. His weapon of choice was a tennis racket, because it would do the least amount of damage in the case of a zombie attack. Zombies were clearly just like any other animal, you had to show them a little love and tender affection, and in return they wouldn't eat you. Yahya was sure of this, which why his zombie survival kit was the best (in his opinion).

During the fire Yahya had managed to escape just in time thanks to his animal friends! He had woken up to Columbus, the sick kitten that Sue had foisted off on him, scratching his face. Yahya had grabbed a backpack, safely tucked away the family of baby squirrels and Columbus and had ran like hell out of the building. Later when the fire had died down and zombies had made their appearance, Yahya had raided the kitchens for food... mainly meat. Bunches of meat. What else would he feed any hungry zombie?

He hadn't told Sue that he had raw meat in some of the pockets in his backpack. Sue would probably get mad at him. Yahya had deflected any attempts to peer into his backpack with the excuse 'Don't touch it, you'll disturb my baby squirrels!' It had worked so far. Don't worry zombies, Yahya would take care of you!

"Hi!" Yahya smiled enthusiastically to Zeke. It was good to see more survivors, though they had certainly lost plenty of friends in the fire... and had regained them as hungry zombies.

"I want to go some place that's enclosed, too, so we know which directions we could encounter some zombies from." And feed them so they wouldn't want to eat THEM in return!

If Zeke and Sue were classified as 'not smart', then Piper's classification had fallen off the bottom of the chart. In such apocalyptic times, the last person anyone really wanted on a survival team was the girl who daydreamed about rainbows and unicorns in her spare time. What Piper even thought of this situation was probably a mystery, considering her grasp on death was loose as best. Add Zombies to the picture? Yeah, she probably thought she'd stepped right into a video game.

As it was, she actually hadn't doomed herself or the rest of her little 'group' yet. Yet. She'd been good at following the orders, er, suggestions given to her by the boys. As it was, she had wandered a little away at this point to search, like everyone else was doing. If they were searching, she wanted to search too! Behind her on the ground, she was dragging her new pet rock. Said rock was actually part of a brick from a caved wall they'd passed at some point, broken and charred. It was being drug behind her on it's 'leash' (a shoestring lifted from what one can only imagine), bumping into everything she passed along the ground. Had she been more worried for its safety, she might have actually picked it up, but she was well aware that pet rocks were fine and sturdy creatures.

She walked slowly over the grounds, humming to herself, until she heard Zeke emerging from inside the building. She paused where she stood, squinting her eyes, and then decided there was absolutely nothing here - nevermind that she hadn't actually looked into any of the open doorways or under any bushes. "I don't think we're going to find any hidden ammo or health boosts on this part of the school grounds," she said, loud enough the others could hear, but still far away enough that they could probably ignore her comment and feign ignorance. She turned back to them, skipping over the debris under feet and dragging along her new pet rock.

Elke didn't really know what was going on.

She remembered fire, and Sue yelling, and someone pulling on her and then nothing, darkness, except for the pain. Burning, trailing up her leg and-- With a shudder, she stepped over a log. Oh, she felt sluggish and weird, but it had to only be a dream, because she was still alive, right? Alive-ish. The details, they had to be a nightmare. A nightmare, the kind you'd get over quickly. Just like the one where she'd eaten Avery--something Elke would never do, anyway. Even down to the gnawing hunger in the pit of her stomach.

Funny... she kind of craved--

"Sue!" She recognized the purple-haired boy first, and then the blue-haired one; "Zeke! You're okay!" Yet... she recognizably wasn't. Anyone could see it, except Elke, who was approaching - rather sluggishly - the group at an approximation of her familiar saunter.

"Thank you," she said happily, clasping her hands behind her back. "I thought you didn't like me, Sue, but you tried to save me! I would have come with you, but..." She shook her head, teal hair flying everywhere. "Thank you."

Around one arm was a vivid, painful-looking red mark, approximately the shape of Sue's hand where it started and much larger where it ended... Almost as if her skin had slid off, and only now was starting to grow back.

At first, Zeke wasn't quite sure what to make of his friend. She was sluggish, walking slowly, almost like she wasn't sure if she was supposed to be there.

But then she said Sue's name, and his name. This wasn't like Zombieland or Night of the Living Dead; it was Elke. She was talking to them, she was thanking Sue for--

He remembered Sue covered in black gunk, doubled over in the grass and heaving up whatever he had eaten for dinner. He had reeked of something awful, something burnt.

"Elke..." he trailed off, trying to look calm. "Your arm..."

That was all he could manage to say. He didn't want to say the rest, he just couldn't.

Calintha Johnson had remembered fire. It was hungry, and it had burned and licked and eaten her flesh. And now, she'd gotten through it. She'd put up her plant defenses and lived through the horror.

Or at least, she didnt stop walking, regardless of the fact that her heart was not beating. Her skin was tinged green, a sickly plant color that was added to by the fact that she'd painted on some green zombie war paint. Cali had learned from the fire.

She'd learned to be hungry. Somewhere she'd managed to find a school uniform, that was partly intact. The pants had a few holes in them, and the cardigan was now only half of what it had been. The tie hung loosely around her neck, her new green fingers weren't quite as able to maneuver the Winchester knot needed to tie it properly. And clutched in her dirty, burned hands was her plant.

It was the same plant that mysteriously showed up on her doorstep not a week before. She'd felt akin to it, since it was mainly dead too. However, that didnt stop Cali from wanting to try. She figured that she could eat the tasty flesh, and her little plant could have the juicy blood.

After all, in the world of carnivorous plants, it was eat what you could, when you could.

The girl ambled towards a group of students who still had a nice healthy pink glow, rather slowly, but with determination. In an attempt to look cool, she tried to do a James Bond style roll behind a bush, but ended up sort of flailing about while she fell over, thereby drawing more attention to herself.

She felt pretty cool about it though.

Sue.

You tried to save me.

Thank you.

I thought you didn't like me.

Tried to save me.

Thank you.

Tried to save me.

Sue....

"... Elke. You're dead."

It was as flat and cold an accusation as Sue could make it. His hands still stung from where her flesh had burned on. He hadn't known who the corpse had belonged to then - everything had been so burned when he'd tried to "rescue" it. Finding out that it was Elke - annoying Elke, stupid Elke, Elke who'd been the unhappy only other that had been there to see that beast outside with him.... it was a kick right to the gut.

She was a zombie now. She was a zombie now. What was Sue supposed to do? Oh come here Elke dear, let's give you a hug now -- oh ******** no, he was not going there. And he shot Piper a glare before she could try it, either (which he knew she would.) He told Elke again, more fiercely, bringing his chair leg up in a defensive brandish - "Elke. You're dead!"

But then there was another person. Another zombie - it was pretty damn obvious by the way she flopped onto the ground, trying to be sneaky. By the door, Nibs hissed wildly and hightailed it for the woods. The other cats were quick to scatter as well.

Two zombies, four humans. He'd known they were too exposed here! Get them before they get you, was what Nibs had hissed as she'd run away. Sue was down with that.

However... the others probably didn't even realize what the hell was going on yet. He didn't hold a lot of faith in the group he'd attached himself to - he was here because they needed him, not the other way around. So, he'd clear it up for them a bit.

"We're being attacked!"

He was a man of action, he knew his way around a fight - he'd show them how it was done. Turning his back on Elke (the more uncomfortable of the two - GEE I WONDER WHY), Sue flung himself at Calintha, bashing at her with his makeshift club and praying to God that the others would pick up on his lead.

Then again, they were kind of stupid. This, too, Sue clarified, screaming as he attacked: "Fight back, and we're getting out of here!"

Their little team had all gathered up together, and now all they needed to do was move to some place secure and then they really could relax. Columbus was unhappy with being outside, though Yahya contributed it to the kitten still fighting its illness. "Hi, Piper!" he wisely did not make a comment on her new pet... nor on the fact that there were no free 'health boosts' like in the video games. She was happy to think so, and so long as Piper was happy thinking that way, Yahya was happy to let her.

Columbus suddenly scruffed up in his lap, tiny claws digging into his thighs. The kitten hissed at the arrival of some girl that Yahya didn't know. Well, she certainly looked sick! Yahya wondered if she was all right? "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice concerned for the poor girl who seemed so happy to see them that she was oblivious to her own physical state. It was only the reactions of his companions that keyed him to the fact that Elke was the enemy. But... she seemed so nice, she was talking to them and thanking Sue! Why were Zeke and Sue... reacting so noticeably to her? She clearly just wanted to chat. She couldn't be a zombie, right?

"Sue?" Sue was the zombie-expert, and Yahya would turn to him for assistance in determining what was undead and what was not. It was then, though, that Sue made it clear what the situation was. They were... zombies, this girl who was talking to them and the other who was now trying to sneak around through the bushes. Yahya was stunned.

"W-wait, Sue!" his friend was leaving his side to charge at a zombie, a zombie who hadn't done anything to them yet!

What if the zombies got hurt?

What if Sue got hurt?

The zombies had died. Sue was still alive, and could die if someone didn't watch his back. It wasn't so much that Yahya was attacking Calintha as he was defending his friend from the possibility of an attack. The kitten was deposited from his lap, and he was running after Sue, swinging his tennis racket out in front of him and at Calintha like a shield... more than an actual weapon.

He didn't want to hurt her, but he didn't want her to hurt Sue.

He promised he didn't mean it!
PostPosted: Sun Nov 29, 2009 10:14 pm

Calintha audibly hissed back at the cat, angry for it messing up her obviously cool James Bond roll. Oh well, the zombie mentally shrugged (she was pretty sure her brain lobes actually shrugged too...well that was cool...she did it a few more times and giggled) and dealt with the problem at hand.

The problem at hand, of course, was the fleshy boy hitting her with a club. Hard. "Ouch!" The club sank into her flesh and made a dull, wet, thwak noise, crunching a few bones in her shoulder. That would have left a nasty bruise had she had blood circulation.

Growling low and deep, Cali scratched at Sue, jagged nails going for soft flesh. She opened her mouth too, attempting to clamp down on his jugular just like a venus fly trap clamped onto a fly, all the while keeping a firm grip on her plant. It was feeding time.

However, before she could get close a ******** TENNIS RACKET came out of no where and hit Cali square in the face. A tennis racket? Really? She dropped rather unceremoniously at the the hit, which stung and left criss cross lines in her face.

"Owwww..." It was more of a howl than an actual sound, and Cali dropped to the ground, clutching her plant which would NEVER be removed from her cold, dead hands. She was tired, and it was time to sleep. These fleshy humans put up too much of a fight for her, and she would try again when she woke up. After all, there's always a tomorrow when you couldn't die (again).

[[NOTE: Cali's out for this round..er, at least I'm pretty sure! XD nice job boys, having fun not being plant food.]]

Piper had no idea what was happening, but when did she ever really? When she was only partway back to their group and about to make a very over exaggerated greeting towards Yahya, their little piece of heaven (well, at least not hell anyway) was interrupted by two intruders.

The first of which was closest to her, and the most obvious to Piper, because she was yelling out to Sue. Piper whirled in her direction as she ambled closer, and just as she was about to take a curious step towards her, she saw a rather interesting look on Sue's face. What on earth was that for? He looked like he had something in his eye. The banter between them was utterly lost on her. Sure, there were zombies around, but zombies didn't talk! They just ate brains. Thus, this girl was most definitely not a zombie.

That was when she heard the sudden war cry through her thoughts, and Piper whirled to look at the second person to happen upon their ragtag group. "Oh, Calintha!" she exclaimed, a smile spreading over her face and her free hand brought up to wave rather emphatically. In her excitement at seeing her plant buddy, Piper whirled a little too hard, however, and sent her pet rock flying right towards the general head area of Elke. She thankfully didn't let go, but neither did she turn around to look as she began to skip towards Calintha and her friends, who seemed to be just as happy to see her as Piper was.

Elke had been moving forward the whole time, slowly and inexorably moving toward the group, but not fast enough that it was threatening. Maybe that was intentional, maybe it wasn't - she might really be so incapable of a fast pace. "It's nothing," she started to say, "Doesn't even hurt!..."

And then that terrible, terrible accusation. For a moment, her eyes were blank - utterly devoid of emotion, utterly devoid of Elke. She stared at Sue, that horrible emptiness measuring him as her hands rose up to her lips. It was the second accusation that brought her back to life, a bestial snarl visible through her fingers.

Then a rock crashed into her face, and Elke hunched over with her arms wrapped around her stomach. This was a good thing, at least for Sue; for Elke, she screamed, a horrible and hoarse sound. At least she'd stopped moving? Once she stopped screaming, she straightened up as much as she could. So hungry... Her green eyes held nothing but hunger, absolutely overpowering need, and they fixed first and foremost upon the one who had hurt her.

One hoarse snarl was all the warning they got before Elke lunged for Piper's unprotected back.

Zeke was glad that he had gone to the bathroom before this had happened, because if he hadn't he certainly would've peed his pants when Elke started growling.

I mean, Calintha was scary, too, but Sue and Yahya (wow, he could swing a racket) could take care of her pretty well. That just left him with Piper. Now, Zeke liked Piper. She was nice, cheerful, and fun to talk to. She made him smile, forget about his worries, and when he couldn't forget she was there with her shoulder.

But, bless her heart, she sometimes made Zeke look like Professor Ludwig von Drake.

Zeke tried to go after her, but stopped when Piper-- no, Piper's pet rock hit the zombie. He was SO glad that it hadn't been him, because he didn't want his bacterial meningitis death to be by flying pet rock. But those worries had to wait, because Elke was pouncing!

"Piper!" Zeke sucked in his breath, making her name barely audible as he ran after Elke and swung his hammer at her head.

Sue saw a flash of claws on point, teeth bared in his direction. He'd gotten the chance to yelp out "s**t!" and fall back, arm raised in his defense, when --

Wow. That tennis racket wasn't as much a sissy weapon as Sue had taken it for, was it? His eyes caught at the sight of Yahya standing over the fallen youma girl, stunned by the realization that it had been him. He'd really done it, really pulled through - gone against his gentle nature to be there when Sue needed him.

He ought to say "thank you," Sue supposed - but that was just one zombie of two. You didn't stop to say ******** thanks in the middle of a fight, and especially not when said second zombie was trying to take chunks out of their most defenseless member.

"PIPER, DUCK!" A moment of pause. "I SAID GET DOWN!"

Sue wasn't a great shot when it came to throwing things. Therefore, the only thing that made sense to do was to hurl himself at the zombie, with just as much power as his legs could take him. He was going to hit Elke hard and take her to the ground. That might put him in the crosshairs, but so be it - one way or another, this was going to get Elke off of Piper. If she wanted a meal, Elke would have to deal with someone that would fight ******** back!

Oh god that felt so good, the rush of warm blood when she sank her teeth into Piper's shoulder. She was still so hungry... maybe if--

Elke's death grip on the blue-haired girl loosened when Zeke hit her and she let go, she stumbled backwards - the hammer hadn't actually broken anything, except maybe her skull. It had hurts so bad, though, so bad she thought she might die. Another shriek - Elke had been prone to screaming when she was alive, now that she was dead it seemed no different - but this one was more of a howl. Animalistic.

When Sue's hit was compounded on top of the hammer blow, the horrible sound cut off. She looked up at the purple-haired boy, the empty rage and hunger gone. Then her eyes closed and she fell sideways, hitting the ground with a dull thump.
