Having decided that she needed a break from the usual scenery, Alba had bustled all of her homework and papers together, stuffed them in her ever-faithful and ever-present tote bag, and walked to Destiny's City public library for a little peace and quiet. She hoped that perhaps being in an all-access, non-descript building meant to be silent at all hours of the day and surrounded by books would keep crazy, jumper-cable-wielding people far, far away. If her plan failed, well, she did have her henshin pen with her.

Though hopefully, its only use for the day would be to simply be a pen, and nothing more.

She found a private little nook in the second story of the library by the non-fiction rows of shelves. The nook had a wide seating area next to a window, so she had plenty of natural light to read by and enough cushion to feel comfortable for a few hours. Leaning against the wall, she reached out and grabbed the first assignment to read. After thumbing through the pages to the right number, she suddenly found it difficult to concentrate on the first passage.

Had you compared the Alba today to the Alba a month ago, an Alba free of destiny and cosmos, you would have noticed an obvious decrease in weight and increase in scrapes, cuts, and bruises. Her injuries were minimal but enough to warrant concern from certain teachers, to whom she explained that she just got a little too carried away in the scene, it was all.

She sighed, and wondered how much longer her second life would continue alone. Alba was lucky enough to find Flora just a few nights before, but Atlas...? It had been two weeks since she made her offer, and it had been two weeks since she last saw the meek boy, quietly sipping on his hot cocoa.

"I wonder how he's doing..." She mumbled to herself, before attempting a second time to focus on the book she held with the aid of her lap.

Bookstores and libraries were nice places. Simon visited them often, though not because he was much of a bookworm - sure, he enjoyed spending some quality time with a good story once in a while, but he valued them for their welcoming atmosphere, and their peace and quiet. He would often take refuge in them when he was a kid. This habit had continued on to his high school years, though he no longer felt the need to stay curled up in the sofas until a librarian politely informed him it was time to leave.

But he came there today for those same reasons: for the peace, and the quiet. The park hadn't worked out too well for relaxation, so he figured burying his attention into a book would be the next best thing to try. The whole senshi gig hadn't been very kind to his demeanor, either: it was typical of him to look worried, but now there was an added layer of strain piled on to that; he had clearly grown to expect a higher chance of something bad interrupting his daily life now that he knew of a genuine evil lurking the streets of Destiny City.

When he saw a familiar mass of wavy dark hair seated near the window, he felt a mixture of surprise and relief.

Quietly enough to make him the library's poster boy for good behavior, Simon approached her chair, timidly lifting a hand in a weak version of the standard attention-getting gesture.

"Alba...?"

Then he was close enough to get a second look at her-- and saw her injuries, her weariness... and had she lost some weight? His brow furrowed with concern, and fidgeting with one of the bracelets on his wrists, he quietly sat down next to her. "A-are you okay? God, you look..."

He trailed off. Telling her she looked terrible would have make for a very awkward reunion.

What a library was to Alba could easily be described in the same strain as what a faithful person would find inside a cathedral: a sense of sanctuary. So it was to no surprise that she had let her guard a few notches down once she finally found enough motivation to begin to read, and the coughs, the shuffling pages, and the creaking wooden steps beneath the newly renovated carpet blocks were pulled back as fizzling background noise. It worked just as well as a lullaby.

The call of her name, however quiet it might have been, caused her to jump in her seat and fumble clumsily with her book. She managed to catch it before it fell, a cascade of thick brown hair washing over her face before she had a chance to look at her inquirerer. By then, though, it wasn't necessary to see; the voice sparked something in her recent memory.

"Simon...?" She questioned as she used her free hand to part her mass of hair from the front of her face and bunched messily behind an ear. Her expression could only be described as an embodiment of warmth and relief to see her friend alive and safe. "It's good to see you!"

Though the smile didn't last for long. Simon didn't have to finish the sentence for Alba to know what he meant, and with that, her mood changed to something a little more somber. "....like hell. Yeah. I know. ....though if I may inquire, you aren't looking so good either. Everything okay with you? ...anymore instances?"

When Alba smiled at him, Simon couldn't help but smile back, just a tiny bit. Despite the circumstances of their first meeting, and how little contact they had had with each other since then, the Crystal girl was quickly becoming a much-needed "safe" individual in his corner of the world. She didn't judge, she didn't push, she didn't put him down or expect too much of him... she was just... nice.

"Good to see you, too..."

His own hair was just as much of a mess, but seemed to stop short of his bangs falling down over his eyes. Which was typical of Simon, really; he had the classical case of untamable boy hair that would only stick out in different places when he ran his fingers over it.

Idly wringing his hands in his lap, he responded, "Just one... at the park, there was someone else there..."

He bit his lip, hesitating.

"And... I... k-kindofwreckedabridge..."

surreality
She had been concerned over his more-than-usual apprehensive demeanor when she first laid eyes on the lanky hillworth boy. While it was true that she hadn't known Simon for more than a few hours collected over a span of two or three days, she felt very drawn to him; which didn't happen often, in Alba's case. However long they knew each other didn't matter in the long run, as what she saw inside Simon's glass-framed eyes were the same fears and exhaustion as her own.

Nobody ever said being a senshi was an easy task.

At the end of his story, though, she couldn't help but crack a smile and suppress a stream of giggles. 'Kind of wrecked a bridge?' That's Simon, alright.

"You.." Her hand reached out to muffle her laughter, "wrecked a bridge? In the park?" She didn't bother to wait for him to confirm an answer as her body began to quiver from keeping as quiet as possible. "Oh, Simon...!"

Laughter... was not a response Simon would have expected from the girl. He recoiled a bit in surprise when he the first notes of amusement hit his ears and sank in his chair some, wringing his hands. The guilty look in his eyes was enough to show he didn't think the whole ordeal was a laughing matter-- he wasn't begrudging Alba for thinking otherwise, but... he looked down at his hands, trying and failing to suppress a sigh.

"Y-yeah," he replied, his voice tiny. "Someone almost fell off... we were lucky everyone else ended up safe."

Then there was a pause, and he shook his head, looking apologetically back up at Alba. "I-I-I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't be acting so depressing. You already have enough to worry about."

Had she known that her laughter would procure such melancholy in Simon, Alba would have given a lot more effort in supressing her loose giggles and chortles. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt the feelings of her new-found companion, and so while the boy fiddled with his hands and attempted to explain and apologize, the Costa Rican could only shake her head and lift a long and slender finger near his lips to silence him.

"No, no, I shouldn't have laughed," She started, "I'm sorry, Simon. That was some serious damage to public proberty you were telling me about and I should not have reacted that way, it isn't polite or appropriate." She let her hand fall to briefly squeeze one of the boy's fidgeting hands before letting it rest on her lap. "I'm happy to hear nobody was injured, and that you even found some help."

"I've yet to find anyone else....like us." She added, disappointment not hidden in her tone. "Sometimes I feel like we're the only ones around. I'm glad to see that I'm wrong, though."

"N-no, i-it's okay. Really," the boy stammered, in one of his awkward attempts at assurance. He'd made an expression a bit like a goldfish when Alba had signaled to him to stop talking, giving a few fluttering blinks as his deep, green eyes centered on her finger. At the very least, having her around seemed to calm him down some; his hands quieted to a stop at her touch, and his posture straightened a bit as they continued to talk.

"There's an-n-nother one up at my school," he continued, "and... oh, I think I saw a c-couple others before I met you..."

Not that he wanted to dwell on those sightings much. He still had nightmares.

His brow furrowed in thought for a second, concentration directed at the floor, before he looked back up at Alba up again - a sudden idea had struck him, it looked like.

"Did you want to go out and look for more? Or... even if we don't find anyone, there's something I want to show you."

"Really? Man, now I feel even more silly. I can't believe I haven't even managed to catch a glimpse of another senshi...I seem to get stuck with some very strange ladies in racy get-up and a lot of hair. Well, only two of them had a lot of hair, but all three tried to attack me and other people." You could almost say that Alba was jealous of Simon and his supposed "couple of" sightings. Had it not been for seeing the boy transform into Atlas with her own green eyes, she would have disbeliefed this whole crime-fighting business entirely as her own over-worked imagination.

Catching Simon's gaze as a thought worked its way inside his mind was a new expression for Alba. He was usually always so timid or lagging behind, so for him to be showing a bit of initiative in something was somewhat of a surprise, and even more so that he evidently HAD a surprise in store.

Some company had to do better than sitting around reading school books.

"I think finding other senshi would be a good idea....and what did you want to show me?" Alba was intrigued, and rather happy to hear that maybe they can start assembling some allies.

Simon took on an expression of concern when Alba briefly recounted her less fortunate run-ins when she'd gone out on patrol. No wonder she looked so strung out... and here he was letting himself be stressed over getting dragged across down by Castor and having a run-in with a youma. Alba had probably been in more genuine danger than he had -- he could bet she'd handled it better than he would have, too.

She seemed battered, but far from beaten. He wondered if it was obvious he was starting to learn to look up to her.

"Oh... I'll show you outside..." he replied nervously, moving to get up off the chair. Briefly regarding the schoolbooks spread out in front of her, he added, "...did you need help with those?"

A smile worked its way between bruised cheeks. "Outside sounds wonderful." It had been far from bitter cold in the ending days of November, and any excuse to be outside and enjoy the final beams of autumn's sunlight was better than moping around in a library; especially if it meant having a (hopefully!) good time with a friend, however strange that friendship started.

Alba was able to get most of her papers and slimmer books inside of her tote, and with Simon's offer, she waved a hand away and began to pick the remainder of the books up on her own. "Nah, these books aren't as heavy as my history lit ones, so they almost seem feather-weight in comparison! Thanks, though." She showed her appreciation by giving him a playful bump with her hips before taking a few steps forward. "Where do you want to leave from? I know there's a back doorway on the other side of the library, or we could go from the front..." Or they could leave from the door that led out to the roof , but that was a silly idea, and was ultimately exempted from her suggestions.

"Yeah, it does..." Simon replied, seeming to cheer a bit when Alba showed him a smile. As nice as the library was, it seemed like neither of them would choose staying inside if there was some nice weather to enjoy outdoors. It was by no means summer perfect given the time of year, but at least didn't possess the dreary grayness November days had; something that would be a shame to waste only viewing through the windows.

While he got up and allowed the girl her space to gather up her books, his hands were busying themselves with their normal wringing again, one pinky hooked down under a bracelet. "Oh, umm," he started, hesitantly- "Actually, I thought the door to the roof would be good? If that's okay. It's fine if it's not okay, we can just use the front entrance. It doesn't matter, really..."

Now her curiousity had really peaked. What in the world could he want to show her on top of a roof? Simon certainly wasn't the kind of boy to take advantage of a maiden in distress, nor was Alba the kind of maiden to be in distress, if she could help it. With that deducted, the crystal academy girl felt more than secure with the idea of being alone on top of a library roof with a grammar school boy, despite what other students would do.

And so, with a quirked eyebrow, Alba supressed laughing at the preposterous chain of thoughts that had gone through her mind and reassured Simon's hesitation. "No no, I'm fine with the roof, the roof is completely A-O-K with me."

It seemed like the girl had spent entirely too long reading and not enough speaking in English when she was in Costa Rica, as what would have normally been pronounced as "Ay Okay" was suddenly spliced into a brightly voweled "AH OH KEH." Though to be fair, this would have been her first language slip-up infront of Simon, and her accent isn't as strong as someone "fresh off the boat" is considered to have, despite English being her second language.

Simon had found Alba's way of pronouncing "A-OK" to be absolutely endearing - but he managed to not outwardly show this enough for it to be noticeable, the charm losing itself in how he was generally happy to see that he'd done something to cheer her up. Someone less shy in his position might have corrected her, but he only nodded and led the way up the stairs and onto the roof.

It had been ages since he'd last been able to look forward to something. He only hoped Alba's reaction would make it worth it.

The rooftop had a nice view. If anyone below took the opportunity to look up, they might have been treated to a flashy display of the standard glitter and colorful lights as the two students shed their civilian identities-- Atlas opted to be polite and screw his eyes shut until he was sure they were both finished, not wanting to hurt the mood of the day with any unnecessary embarassment.

"Okay..." he started, inching towards the edge of the roof, before looking back at Alba with a soft smile. "Are we ready?"

Alba realized fairly quickly that she had evidently lost track of time while she was studying as she stepped through the opened door to the roof of the library. Staring back at her was a display of glittering lights from Destiny City's finest buildings, along with a handful of decorated trees for the upcoming holidays. The moon hung low in a comforting crescent, a shape that always reminded the Costa Rican of a close embrace.

She had been bewildered, then, to find out that the view wasn't actually the surprise that Simon had instore. At the request of donning their fuku, Alba was more than a little hesitant. She had been hoping to avoid her senshi obligations for the day, but the boy seemed so excited about showing her something that she didn't have the heart to say no.

And so, after adding on their own light show to the already magnificent view of the city at night, Alba took on an expression of fear and uncertainty as she saw Simon teeter to the edge of the building. "Ready..for what...?"

"It's something Castor showed me a while ago," Atlas explained, "so you should be able to do this, too. Come on," and he lifted a hand in a beckoning motion - for once they weren't trembling, or wringing or fidgeting - "and don't worry. It'll be fine, I promise."

He waited for Alba to join him on the edge of the roof, and gently grasped Alba's hand in his own. His grip was at least making an attempt at being reassuring, and, despite the alarm bells of extreme improbability that would ring in one's head at the very thought, felt almost confident. Or, at the very least, he wasn't self-conscious about invading personal space or gripping the girl's hand too hard.

"On the count of three, we're going to jump over to that coffee house, okay?"

He was serious. He had already started the countdown.

"One, two..."

His hand, though subtle in gesture, held an immense power and captivation over the senshi of storms as it placidly continued to reach for her. No fumbling, no trembling, no amount of nervous twitches and ticks were found within that simple hand, which could only account for a single thing in Alcyone's mind. This was a side of Atlas she hadn't ever seen before, or thought would ever see dressed in the foreboding white gloves of justice.

Atlas wasn't nervous. There was a small hesitation, where she still believed that standing by the edge of the roof was very much a bad and dangerous idea, but then.

Then Alcyone remembered who she was dealing with, and what kind of ludicrous events had unfolded for them to have met and bonded. Her own gloved hand clasped around his fingers; surely, the boy infront of her would not lead her to betrayal and deathly despair.

...Even when he's very solemnly stating that they were going to leap on over to the coffee house several feet away and above. She closed her eyes, drew a slow breath, and imagined far more bizarre instances that she had had the pleasure of experiencing in her new life. Eyes opened, she edged her slippered feet close to his.

"......three!"

Alcyone threw her entire trust in the small palm of Atlas' hand and kicked off the roof's edge.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 10, 2009 5:37 pm

There was always the possibility that Atlas had been possessed by some act of the Negaverse, or that he was in actuality a youma fashioned to look like him, and he was about to leave Alcyone to an overall disappointing and anticlimactic death. The real Simon Ferris could have been hiding in a closet and weeping somewhere. Or, perhaps, the pressures and demands of being a senshi had finally taken their toll on the poor boy and he had gone completely insane. That would make sense.

But in spite of the current questionability of Atlas's psychological well-being, Alcyone was gripping her hand anyway, adding her voice to his own in the count.

The concrete ground beneath them was alarmingly far away.

Alcyone had already learned that invulnerability was not part of the standard senshi package.

They jumped.

They jumped, and for a rushing instant they were pitched into the air, unnaturally high-- but soon enough their inertia ran out and they were falling, making a quick and deadly beeline towards the leaf-littered concrete below--

Except they weren't. As suddenly as the movement had started it had stopped, and they were back on level ground. On a different roof. On the roof of the coffeehouse that they'd been looking up at just a breath of time ago.

"See?" Atlas was saying. "Not too hard, huh?"

Had there been a maligned intent on Atlas' part, there was no doubt that Alcyone would have fallen to an anti-climactic death. Perhaps if that was the case, there could have been a warning in the form of shallowed eyes or a misplaced smile, the kind of telltale signs you found in mystery novels that helped the hero or the heroine along to save the day. Perhaps then, she could have avoided the situation all-together.

However, that would be an outcome for another day. Tonight, Alcyone's hand gripped at Atlas' ever tight as her feet left the security of a solid ground to stand on. Instead of falling like her mind expected her to, she felt the surprising and satisfying sensation of wind rushing through her face and tangled hair as they lifted higher by a single bound.

It was like riding a roller coaster or feeling a heavy gust from an incoming storm or what she could swear a bird feels like when it takes off. It was exhilarating.

At the landing, Alcyone could only begin to ripple with laughter and delight. "That.....was amazing!"
