Ford wouldn't normally have entered a comic book store of his own free will. In his mind they were crowded places, filled with smells and overly energetic nerds who had the potential to paw all over him at any given moment. Plus, he didn't really have much use for the books themselves. Of course, he'd never owned any before either.
What brought him here this time was actually his father. Sander had some business in the music store next door, and in exchange for a promise to remain out of his way for a while, Ford was going to get a private magic lesson, in the comfort of his own home. The spawn stood at the end of an aisle, paging through an indie comic about a girl who could turn into a roach. Not exactly something he could relate to, but at least the art was nice to look at.

Taylor stood at the front counter in the midst of a stare down with one of the new shop employees. Finally the purple haired, multi-facial piercing wearing teen sighed and handed the spawn the extra two dollars he'd been waiting for. Honestly why didn't anyone ever believe that yes he was a regular and yes he got special privileges like a higher than normal cash or credit rate when returning previous purchases for re-sale. To the nearly teen aged Taylor lying about something like that seemed sorta ridiculous.
Full amount of requested money now received Taylor pocketed it and turned away. True to his word he intended to spend at least some of it back here today. Well if there was anything new worth having anyways. mindful of his long tail and the potentially damaging if small spikes on it The pebbly skinned boy wound his way trough the aisles until he reached the back left corner. Here were Victorian and older period piece style comics. Places where he would find interesting designs within, machines that he could try and build even if they wouldn't actually summon demons or open portals.
It was in his peripheral vision that the boy spotted what he thought was a familiar face. Although if it was his old carnival buddy the other had certainly grown up since he'd last seen him "Ford?" As he called out the name Taylor realized he'd grown a lot himself and might not be recognizable.

"Hm? Um..." Ford looked up from his roach-girl comic, squinting at Taylor before his lips stretched in a grin. "Hey." It was true, Taylor had grown, but Ford thought he would have probably recognized the other boy's headwings anywhere. "How've you been?" The first and last time they had seen each other, Ford had been fairly poor company with the napping and all. He hoped he would be more entertaining today. "Do you know any good comics?" he asked. "I've never been in a place like this before."

Taylor laughed and his double set of clay coloured headwings jiggled as he did. "I spend a lot of time here so yeah I know a lot of good comics, what type of stories do you like?" Taylor remembered Ford, the indoor carnival and bumper cars of doom. That alone didn't really tell him how the otherwise sleepy boy might feel about romance stories or action or horror.
" I've been okay, busy in school a lot mostly though." School was interesting and yet it took up so much of his time, the pride spawn longed for the day when he was only enough to never have to go back.

Ford nodded. He didn't attend traditional school, but the lessons he had been getting lately were certainly enough to keep him occupied, both physically and mentally.
"I dunno," he admitted. "Magic, I guess?" Ever since Ford had found out that he possessed some potential in that area as well, he had been curious to find out more, even if his research delved into fantasy. After all, art was supposed to imitate life, right?

"Magic likes runes or magic likes spells or magic like rituals?" Taylor inquired. You had to be specific becuase there were a billion magic comics out there. It was like asking him to find a manga about a guy with a sword and catgirl.

Runes, spells and rituals? He only knew about one of those. "Spells," he said. Ford wished he had a pen and paper to write down the other two so he could remember to ask Sam all about them. "Maybe some runes or rituals too," he added. "But spells first."

"Okay that's not too hard." Given the info about spells and that Ford had found the roach girl comic interesting Taylor knew exactly where to look. "Wait here," he ordered before pivoting on one foot and dashing off to a specific section. blue and read eyes scanned the rack for certain covers and it was only a minute later before the pebbly skinned boy returned.
"Here's three to pick from." Taylor held up each cover as he explained them. " Blood will tell has lots of regular style spells in it but also ritual blood magic and is set on a sort of alter Earth. True mage academy isn't as dorky as it sounds there's lot of political commentary in it" Taylor loved allegory in his comics. " and tabula rasa is just awesome although it's kinda slow to update." Personally Taylor favoured the last one but that was also becuase magic was used to power all sorts of thingamabobs and that was always of interest to him.

"Hmm. I'll take... this one," Ford said, pointing at Blood Will Tell, "and Tabula Rasa." Apparently political commentary wasn't Ford's thing. "Thanks." He flipped through the books, deciding that they would be a decent thing to spend his money on after all. "You really seem to know this place," he said, smiling. "What kinds of stuff do you like to read?"

Taylor handed over the comics and smiled. "I like super hero stuff mostly and darker magical ones with interesting machines in it." The pebbly skinned spawn was simply fascinated by all sorts of gadgets and those two genres tended to have the most of them. "It takes time to get used to it but you learn to really appreciate comics as more than just stories with pictures." Taylor hated the way some people didn't understand that comics were not just for little kids and that they were their own special art style and style of storytelling.

Ford nodded, flipping through his future purchases a bit. He reached in his pocket and pulled out some money. "D'you ever stand in here and read them? I mean, not all of them, of course." He didn't have much in the way of an allowance and he could see the benefit of using the shop as a library, even if his law-abiding nature balked at the thought.

Taylor nodded slowly "Yeah but I mean I come here all the time and I always buy something so they don't mind." He shifted closer to Ford in a conspiratorial fashion " if you ask the guys at the counter for reading material they have a box of stuff that got damaged in shipping or was roughly handled and can;t be sold. Still in good enough condition to read but it's not merchandise anymore. The box" you could practically hear him emphasizing the words " is good for starting new series too becuase you can see if you like stuff before you get around to buying a few issues." Taylor was quite proud of his ability to share this insider knowledge, not that he'd share with just anyone of course.

"Ah," Ford said with a grin. "Good to know." He reached into his pocket, pulling out a wad of crumpled bills. "I guess I should pay for these now. My dad's probably close to done," he said, disappointment evident in his tone.

Taylor shrugged " Yeah you probably shouldn't make him wait adults get so pissy when you do that." Honestly hadn't they ever been young and interested in stuff themselves? " Anyways it was cool to see you again and if you keep coming back for more comics I'm sure we'll see each other again." Maybe by then they could have a real comic conversation, in depth and meaningful.
