Spirits, but she could not get a breath of air nowadays! Not without getting herself a muzzleful of the newly grown Pekko, who now took it upon himself to try and impress her with his newly fleshed out adult body. It might have been slightly, vaguely cute the way any sort of attention seeker might have it, had it not been for the fact that the green boy was just plain annoying. Annoying, almost clingy, and most certainly cocky. Merrill still half-wondered if she should have just let him drown at that lake. Sure, it would have weighed on her conscience like a rock in a pond bed, but if she had known then what grief Pekko would cause her, Merrill would have thought twice about diving into that accursed water . . .
On top of that, the alphas had their pups to add to the growing pack. Not that the beta was against this at all; she rather admired how most of them were already independent and not in need of constant pup-sitting. She could see in them fine adults in the making - unlike a certain male. Make that two, when she thought about it. Edgar was also a useless pile of fur, lazing about in the sun and shadow alike, muttering to himself and reeking when he wasn't gobbling up meals. One of these days she would speak with Chivosi or Menelaus about his leeching presence.
But for right now, the beta was content enough to have awakened from her early afternoon nap and set herself upon the usual border patrol path along the outer rim of YMCA. Thankfully Pekko was out of sight (and Edgar out of smell), though Merrill remained wary as she pawed away from teh central camp. Never knew, never knew . . . "Though it's silly to avoid children," she told herself while shouldering through the trees, for that was what Pekko was: not an adult, but an overgrown pup. "Mm . . . Mayhaps I'll come across a meal to bring back. A hunt always clears the mind."

Corvus had been traveling for some time, with no real destination in mind. He had run into a wolf here and there but so far none had really been anything to worry about, merely more wanderers like him. During his time wandering he had taken time to think about his life. He was getting a bit older now, not that he was really old, but he was an adult and should be settling down sometime. But what was the point of settling down when you didn't have a pretty female by your side. Corvus thought himself to be a pretty good ladies man, but that theory was yet to be fully proven.
As he continued on his way he caught a flash of purple in the trees ahead. Coming to a stop he took a better look. His eyes had indeed not lied to him, there was a purple wolf up ahead, and a female on top of that. I must be dreaming, he though to himself, to be so lucky as to stubble upon a pretty female way out here.
He checked to make sure his fur was in good shape before making his way towards the other wolf. He didn't want her first impressions of him to be a scruffy drifter, or wait did he. Oh well too late to change his mind now that he was so close to her. He held his head high, moving along in a confidant trot, tail wagging behind him. "What a beautiful sight to run into on such a fine day." He said as he came within clear sight of the female.

With hawk-like speed she shifted her gaze to view the source of the voice - she was not in the mood for being stopped for any small purpose - and for a second she caught her breath at the sight of pure green and yellow eyes. Spirits damn it, had Pekko followed her all the way from camp again?! But now, this pattern was not familiar - not a dark mask from where unsightly thoughts swam in the gleaming eyes, but an evershifting, perhaps even more appealing spectrum of what was now becoming one of her least favorite color. Either way, though, the male's confidence was apparant, and thus the beta had to meet it with her own, arching her head slightly before speaking. "The day is clear if that is what you mean, yes, though I hope it will snow soon." The winter season brought back pangs of her old home in the mountains; Merrill felt not the cold due to her thick coat, and in fact revelled in it. "Are you lost, traveller?"

"Oh yes, the day is clear." He replied, although that wasn't what he meant at all. Silly female must be distracted by his handsome body and not thinking straight. "I'm sure it will snow soon, it is getting late in the season after all." He went on, hoping to butter her up a bit. He couldn't help but stare into her eyes, the bold blue markings underneath them just begged his eyes to look into them.
He had to snap back to reality when she asked him something. "Hmm? Oh no I'm not lost. I was merely passing through I suppose." He sat down now, into a more relaxed pose. "I've crossed the border of a pack land haven't I?" He wasn't stupid. He could tell she was a wolf from a pack, the way she carried herself and spoke told him that. Very few drifters would act like she did, that was unless they wanted others to think they were in a pack. Though he really doubted this pretty lady wasn't tied down to a pack somewhere around here.

"Not quite crossed the border, but you're near a pack yes," she answered evenly, giving him a scrutinizing gaze. The fur on the back of her neck was raised slightly even though the male had not given any inclination of volatile action or otherwise threatening behavior. But she did see the return of a look she had grown to ever dislike in those yellow eyes, the sweeping gazes that both happened and did not - the mental images she imagined the other was imagining. But that was paranoia speaking, and Merrill berated herself for considering the silly thoughts! "Behind me lies Y-M-C-A, a safe haven for the elderly, wandering, orphaned, and sick. Even if you only look to fit one of those descriptions, the alphas don't mind visitors if you need a place to rest your paws. I am Merrill, one of the betas beneath them." She didn't have a problem with exchanging names with strangers, even ones that were a tad . . . what was the word for it? He was staring her down in a fashion that made her shift slightly from paw to paw.

Corvus' ear flicked ever so slightly as she spoke. So she was a Beta, well she did carry herself like a high ranking wolf, so it wasn't that big of a shock. What a nice name he thought. "Well Merrill, my name is Corvus." He stated plainly enough. Perhaps he could stay here for a day or two. He had been traveling for quite some time and it would be nice to relax for a bit. Especially when such a pretty wolf lived here. He would be stupid not to stay and get to know her more.
"Well perhaps you pack would be kind enough to let me stay for a little while." He finally said after falling into a short silence as if pretending to think it over. "Then I could be on my way again. Unless of course I was given a reason to stay." He continued with a slight smirk on his maw.

As soon as those words left his lips, Merrill wondered if it had been a good idea to invite him at all - similarly as she had pondered letting Pekko drown. How odd, to have drawn so many parallels within ten minutes of meeting the green wolf! This didn't bode very well in the beta's mind. "You are free to come and leave as you please," Merrill said with a small incline of her head, almost looking at Corvus down her nose in an aloof manner - the high-ranked baroness staring down the ever-subtle yet persistent man that would so daringly hint at coupling. Hmm . . . paranoia and pride now, was it? She needed to get it together, honestly.
"Then if you want, come and follow me, Corvus," Merrill continued briskly, business-like, turning a little to begin to lead him to the main encampment. She didn't want to seem like she was staring - if this guy's personality had said anything, it was that her words and actions would be taken as innuendos in their own right. "I will take you to them. Keep up." The wolfess began at such a pace that it might have been a veiled attempt to quickly walk away from Corvus.

Corvus stood up and stretched quickly as the Beta spoke. He was eager to see this pack she had spoke of. Was it a large pack he wondered. Or a smaller but tight knit group. But judging by her words it might be more of a loosely knit group if one is allowed to come and go at their own whim.
As she took off her leapt after her. "Don't worry, I will keep up." He told her as he ran behind. My she was quite fast and if she hadn't been leading him to the pack he would have most certainly gotten the idea that she was trying to get away from him. Females, he thought, always running away from that which they desire the most.

Or running away from that which they could not call their worst fear. Merrill carefully made sure that Corvus nether lagged behind nor got too close, for one would just be bothersome and the other would just be unsettling. The beta had been picky before on many things, but now it seemed like she always had some sort of snippy comment to make about everything - and during her favorite, usually peaceable time of winter? It reminded her of home, which stirred both comforting and melancholy emotions within her breast. And clashing emotions, let alone strong feelings at all, were causing cracks in the otherwise smooth face she kept. But then she was probably thinking too much about it, worrying it like females were wont to do with problems . . .
Merrill shook her head a little and realized that they had seconds before crossed the border, for the alphas' scents were on the wind. "Si!" she called, turning her head about. She could never be too sure that she would be in her den, for her litter was an energetic bunch and required attention. "Oy, Si! Got another visitor here." It bespoke the purple femme's confidence to call out to the alpha in a manner that was more befitting an old friend rather than her leader.

Chivosi had been padding back to the den site after retrieving Derecho..who now scampered about her legs insisting that he had been perfectly fine in the woods thank you very much and hadn't needed retrieving at all...Chiv sighed..pups. When Merrill's call rang out Chiv lifted her head and hushing Derecho trotted off in the direction of the purple beta with the pup running at her heels.
"My Merrill..you do have a knack for green ones now don't you?" She commented with a slight chuckle as she caught sight of newcomer. "I am Chivosi" she introduced herself "Alpha of the YMCA pack"Derecho was somewhat surly after being fetched by his mother - he'd been perfectly fine where he was and hadn't been causing any trouble at all when she'd come busting through the bush full of motherly concern.
His ill temper disappeared instantly however when he caught sight of Merrill and he strolled over to the purple female with an air of importance about him, casting a critical look at the green male..Derecho didn't much like green wolves....mostly because Merrill didn't seem to like green wolves...upon reaching the purple female he sat down beside her and mimicked her surly expression.

Corvus followed Merrill to where they soon found the Alpha. He tilted his head at the Alpha's comment regarding green ones. What did that mean, he thought. But not wanting to look like an idiot in from of the Alpha he got into as submissive of a position as he could muster, which really wasn't much more than lowering his head a bit in respect. "Greetings Chivosi." He said as he tucked his tail in a bit. "I am Corvus. You Beta offered me the shelter of your den."
His eyes caught site of the little pup that had followed the Alpha here. Great that's the last thing he wanted to deal with was a bunch of puppies. But he knew better than to say anything for it clearly was the Alpha's pup that sat there giving him that look.

Oh yes, she had a knack alright. Three in a row! Honestly! Merrill didn't need the reminding of her strange luck, and it was the sight of Derecho mimicking her sour mood that seemed to lighten it somewhat - or perhaps he just happened to be surly about being overprotected by his mother. That could be the only explanation that would tie him to Chivosi. The kid was pretty self-confident as were his siblings, though hopefully this wouldn't spell out trouble later. Not to mention the lot needed nicknames . . . But first.
"Morning, Si and son," she greeted with a deep bow of her head as the little one sat beside her. "And yes, I did offer him shelter here, as that is the ideal you and Mene-Pup built the pack upon." The tone of voice clearly stated that she had not invited him out of the kindness of her heart. "I found him wandering near the border southwards. Do we have room?" She did not normally ask that question, as it was assumed that YMCA would have the room for any wolf, but her patience had been tested.

"Morning Merrill" Chivosi answered the beta with a small flagging of her tail, Chiv was eternally grateful for Merrill...she was pretty sure that the entire pack would fall apart without the purple wolfs help, or at the very least it would be far more chaotic then it already was. Turning her attention to Corvus Chiv looked him over with a kind expression - for an alpha Chiv was fairly easy going - which seemed to be a requirement in YMCA where so many shy and troubled wolves resided.
"Yes of course we have room" She told the green wolf "YMCA is a haven for all wanderers, for as long as you choose to stay you are asked only to respect the other wolves here and help in pack upkeep..be that hunting or patrolling or other duties as is necessary" She told him. "Would you perhaps like a tour?"
Derecho puffed out his chest a little as Merrill said good morning to him, she had noticed him! Derecho was as always quite impressed by the brightly colored Beta wolf - and envisioned growing up to be just like her someday.
"I can show him around mum" He offered eager to be useful - and be given the excuse to wander into the woods a bit more.
"Nice try" Chiv told Derecho with an amused look "But I think you should return to the dens where the rest of your siblings are doing what they are supposed to" She told him firmly.

"I appreciate you hospitality." He told the Alpha. At least he was being sincere about it, he really did think it was gracious of them to allow him to stay here even if it would only be for a few days. Not many packs would be so kind. "I am willing to help out as needed." He added, though mentally he told himself he would not pup sit. That was just out of the question.
His eyes moved to the young pup for a moment before turning back to the Alpha. Hearing the word siblings made him almost...almost cringe. There were more pups, oh no. "Yes it would be nice to have a look around." He could only hope that the pup would return to the den and not tag along. If by chance the pup did come along, well then Corvus would grin and bear it.

Now normally it was Merrill's job to take up the mantle of playing tour guide for newcomers, being a beta that enjoyed making herself busy. But this male was not someone she needed to continue associating with in her current state - no, she needed to calm down a little, put her mind to some other useful task before her head ached from the many thoughts that flooded it these days. "I can watch over the little one while you show Corvus around," Merrill suggested to the alpha, giving Chivosi a subtly hopeful look. "Make sure he or his siblings don't get into too much trouble while your eye is off them. As far as dens, I think there is a spare near the forest's edge to the north he can use when he has satisfied his curiosity. Although Edgar might have wandered near there, who knows." His smell would be more than enough an indicator for the rat-wolf's position."
