Edward is an abusive stalker who wants to "make love" with a girl 9 times younger than him almost.
Bella is a pure idiot.
Jacob is a furry ***** who will stop at almost nothing to get his hands on the little girl he "loves."
In blunt terms, girls are fangirling about an abusive boyfriend and a guy who wants to have "fun" with little girls.
Now please tell me why the characters are so popular again? No, the fact that they are "hot" do not count as evidence.

I don't personally understand how Twilight ever managed to get as popular as it is, considering there are so many books out there that are much better.
I'm not a fan myself, but I think the whole argument over Twilight is honestly just ridiculous. It's just a book; is it really worth all the fighting? People can like whatever they want to like. I definitely agree that the fans who become overly obsessed with the book and claim that Edward is real are annoying, but not every Twilight fan is like that, and some of the people that dislike it are quite honestly just as obnoxious about it.
I actually did read the books a long time ago, and if I remember right, they explained that Jacob wasn't necessarily in a relationship with the girl; I recall him mentioning at one point that another of the werewolves was also imprinted with a child but was more of an older brother or something of the sort to her than a boyfriend.

Haha. I'm not the only one.
People've been pressuring me into reading the saga but I find the plot boring and the characters beyond cliche. Bella's desperate to get laid, that's indisputable. Whether she wants to get laid by a 90-year-old anemic or some guy that turns into a dog is her choice. Grah. I don't have anything against Stephanie Meyer, but the reaction her book has gotten is bigger than it should have been.
It's also not true to the previously accepted view of vampires. I'd much rather keep the vampire image as "fear for my life from a merciless perv" than let it become "pale anti-socials that freaking sparkle in the sun at my local high school".

Well, I know next to nothing about Twilight other than what people have told me.
But my guess is Twilight became popular because it's easy to understand and easy to relate to and it's a typical romance story. And typical is popular, because it's something people are familiar with.
Also, there's the fantasy aspect that a lot of high school girls probably dream about.
Unoriginal works usually become popular because they're unoriginal.

I read the books and found them ok for what they were, many other better books out there, but the series has gotten way too popular and I think it's turning vampires into jokes
