IN THE NAME OF THE MOON! CONCEPT CONTEST!

SECTION ONE

Name: Sorrin Giovanni

Nicknames: Gio (he likes his last name!)

Gender: Male

Age: 18

School: Sovereign Heights

Fav. Food: Fruits, juicy sweet fruit, not uncommon to find him snacking on one at any given time. He also loves milkshakes.

Hated Food: Anything spicy, the mild sauce at taco bell set’s this kid off.

Hobbies:
Tinkering: Sorrin likes to fix things, ranging from simply fixing a door handle, to building a fence in the back yard, and sometimes the daring dive under the hood of a car. (The latter of which may result in more problems… but Sorrin doesn’t quite mind.) If it needs to be fixed and Sorrin has the time, he would be more than happy to do so thanks to his dad always having him help around the house.

Sculpting: Even if he isn’t fixing something Sorrin will continue to work with his hand sculpting figures in his free time. If he isn’t at home fixing something odds are he can be found in the Meadowview art department working on another foot tall sculpture of some figure. His favorite thing to sculpt however is medieval structures and figures, they have more detail and character then most things today, soaring towers, curving arches and a sense of wonder.

Movies: Usually used as a background noise when working, Sorrin has amassed quite a collection of movies to listen to or watch. He only picks the best for his collection after seeing it in theraters or on high recomendations of friends. Bonus points if its an old cop movie, middevil or kung-fu.

Video Games: In particular he enjoys fighting games carrying on with his enjoyment of kung-fu movies. Bonus points if the game gives you a sword to hack and slash. He also has a soft spot for Rome Total War if only because it has knights and castles, lots of knights and very big castles.

Historical Fiction: Napoleon Bonaparte with dragons? The south being given time traveling AK-47's? Russia winning the cold war? And anything with the words 'forgotten realms' on it surely fills his book shelves along with how to books. He can be found browsing libraries and book stores seeking these out.

Virtues:

Helping Hand: It started simply as being told to help around the house. Help move stuff around the house, help dad build the new entertainment stand, all of this eventually became help dad fix the sink, work with dad on the car. Now it's just second nature for Sorrin to want to help with projects. He's more of a hands on guy so don't always expect the best advice on how to best break up with a girl, but hey, at least he's willing to try and help out when a friend needs it.

Imagine a jack of all trades, or rather an apprentice of all trades. No Sorrin can't fix a car like a jiffy lube, but he can change a tire. He can fix a pipe, but don't expect him to plan a whole system. Expect him to generally follow instructions to fix something. As for advice to fix 'personal' problems. Sorrin isn't always the sharpest person for trying to sort things out, a lot of his advice being 'from a friend of a friend' which isn't always the right idea when trying to solve an issue between friends. Still he's going to offer whatever advice he can find and be more than happy to brainstorm ideas.

Believe In Me! Believe In You!: Sorrin's got this from the plans for a perfectly laid history project (invention of the trebuchet with a miniature model?) to the saving of a civi, Sorrin always tries to keep his chin held high and his attitude positive, nothing like being confident in your skills and plans. In his mind all it takes is confidence and just a little planning to solve a problem, if you aren’t confident in the first place how did you expect to get something done and done right anyway? This results in constant support from him, if you have to take a risk Sorrin will cheer you all the way to believe and go the distance.

Energetic: Sorrin is by no means lazy, and always wants something to do. Whenever he finds himself with nothing to do he’ll begin to get a bit restless usually bothering friends to go out and do something together. Sometimes he even ends up bouncing from one plan to the next still desiring something to do with time left in a day, though this leads to a problem of planning to do more than time will allow in some cases.

Calm Headed: No use crying over spilled milk right? Sorrin is very slow to anger; Rather than getting angry he tends to go through a period of calmly trying to sort things out in a level voice, be it trying to explain why he did something that might have upset someone, or calmly telling someone to simply leave him alone. Usually this ends things pretty well, but if things keep going it’s when his voice starts to crack that something’s really starting to get at him.

Flaws:

Guilt Trip: Remember that time Sorrin let you borrow that pen? Remember when he tutored you in math? Remember when... and the list will go on and on till you agree to do something for Sorrin. While he does things out of good intentions he also has a habit of using those favors to get something back later on.

Busy Busy Busy: Time management is something Sorrin never got his head around. He has a very bad habit of being late, not showing up, standing you up, and generally being too busy to do the things he promises to do. On average he cuts it close to showing up to class, is always fashionably late, and 4 times out of 10 will not show till after a phone call. When he does show up he usually starts by spouting a series of excesses and apologizes and promises to make it up and be on time next time.

I’ll make it up to you!: As stated above Sorrin will promise the moon and more to make up for what he’s done. Most of it bluster and empty promises as he will most likely be just as late as he was last time. He won’t stop nagging you about it till you finally forgive him which can be a rather annoying situation to have him always digging up the past that could easily just be forgotten rather then repaid.

Wadya Mean No?: More so he won’t get it when you tell him not to worry about it. He was late! He needs to fix that! Obviously your saying no because you don’t want him to feel obligated but he is obligated in his own mind to make it up to you. Even if you simply say yes I forgive you be prepared to be nagged if you actually mean it.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Eyes: Dark blue

Hair: Dark blond with blue highlights on the tips, down past his ears and spiked ends

Face: Round face, squaring out at the jaw a bit, always has a smile on his face. Has a slight olive tanned skin showing hints at Italian heritage.

SECTION TWO

IF SENSHI

Senshi: Sailor Hephaistos, Senshi of Metal Craft

Hephaistos being named after Hephaestus the Greek God of Technology, Blacksmiths, Craftsmen, Artisans and Volcanoes.

Concept: Old fashioned Templar knight. Whites and red, light chain mail mesh or some kind of thin metal looking material, fuku of chain mail, metal boots, something to protect his right leg.

Challenge: I will craft your defeat!

Attack:
Attack 1A: Liquid Steel! Sorrin calls out the attack summoning roughly 2 gallons of a warm liquid metal that appears from the ground around him before being thrown towards an enemy with a flick of his hand. This liquid metal is thick and warm to the touch and able to cause a light burning that turns the skin red as well as slow someone hit with it down. (Water bending? Naw. LIQUID METAL BENDING)
After 5 minutes the metal simply fades away back to wherever it came from.

Attack 1B: Flowing Steel! Usable 3 times a fight; like his previous attack Sorrin summons roughly 4 gallons now of the warm liquid metal. The flowing mass of metal follows the movement of Hephaistos' hands able to split into two smaller masses. Now able to control it much better Hephaistos can throw the smaller amounts to preserve liquid for extra shots. Up to 6 shots of smaller rounds. Or simply wave the liquid around in front of him to fend of enemies with the same burning effect. Once again 5 minutes after being thrown the liquid melts away.

Attack 2: Master Of The Forge! Three times a battle Sorrin raises his hand to the sky summoning a forge masters hammer that he brings down against the ground with a burst of light, the strike rings out like a hammer on steel as the hammer vanishes. After this is done Sorrin is able to summon up enough liquid metal to make a craft weighing up to 60 pounds somewhere in a five foot radius of where the hammer struck. This liquid metal is of a much higher quality and is used only to create, lasting as long as Sorrin is powered up. If this ability is used more than once the previous material immediately crumbles into dust.
Other information and Thoughts:

Milkshake Deal: Sorrin isn't a gambler per say, nor does he want your money, but if he ever makes a bet, odds are the payment is milkshakes for the winner. He even accepts them as repayment for a favor, just another way to sucker him into helping with a project.

Family:
Samantha Giovanni (Mother): Soft spoken and always in a chipper mood, she's a stay at home mom who likes to spend her spare time sewing.
Marcello Giovanni (Father): Works with a construction company in Destiny City. Not a head designer but he does a lot of hands on work and lately has been doing more work what with damages to the structures in the city from Senshi and Negaverse activity. He also taught Sorrin most of his skills with being hands on.

I like all his virtues and flaws! *thumbs* Though for something like "reality check", it would be nice to know how long he gets "stumped": if its temporary or actually a psychological thing (ie: This always happens to me, I'm so bad vs. Aw man, crap, what do I do now? )

Perhaps broken promise can also extend to something about his hrmmmm... time management? ;D THATS ALL THE CRIT I HAVE FOR YOU FOR NOW BBY crying <33

Tweeked the two you mentioned Zoo, he's stumped usually till it's fixed, which will go for about two days of on and off tinkering, if he can't fix it by then well... don't ask. You'll get an ear full of BAWWW. As for Broken Promise I tried to tie it more into time management.

Anyone got anything else to offer? c:

Sorrin needs another hobby that's group-related, than a solo activity. Hobbies are how other people can look at your character and not only get a good idea of who they are, but it will also allow them to picture some potential RP scenarios. Or at least come up with some "meet'n'greet" RPs to establish common ground/figure out if they'd get along, then move on from there.

With "Let's Go Do Something!" it currently comes off to me as a flaw? Currently, I read it as him NEEDING a project to work on. Constantly. How does this help him? Is he active, does he try to get his friends involved, etc. What drives him to do something? Does he enjoy working on as many projects as he can? What sort of projects does he favor -- ones that help himself, help other people? What sort of "projects" are we talkin' about here?

The first paragraph of his "reality check" creates a conflict with his "Happy Go Lucky" virtue. The second paragraph, however, with the fact that he broods? RAMP THAT UP! That would be an interesting aspect to his character. Or, perhaps consider adding something about how it is possible to ruin his day under 'Happy go Lucky'?

With his senshi, since he's named after and asteroid that checks out.

'Sculpting the Craft' - How long does it take him to sculpt the object? Does the metal melt down on its own accord, then solidifies when he is done with it? Or does he need to find cold water to douse whatever he made, in order to make it keep its shape?

Since all of his attacks deal with taking something already made and turning it into something new, I feel that his Eternal attack isn't different enough to justify it being an eternal attack. It simply allows him to craft/metalshift bigger objects? It's like an upgrade to his super attack.

Perhaps consider PREVENTING him from being able to craft armor at first? It would limit him to a rinkydink shield and maybe a mace of some sort, or caltrops. The time it takes him to make these things makes me a bit hesitant, as there might not be enough time in a battle to actually do any of these? A battle RP usually lasts ICly for less than five minutes, so he would have to either craft his things ahead of time, or be in the middle of crafting them/be interrupted to use them in battle, I think.

Also, from the QnA thread:
LadyNozomi
SO, I have another random question that I came up with after seeing all these cellphone questions.

I think it was covered somewhere that the cell phones/henshin pens had a sort of 'subspace magic pocket' that they could be stored in and recalled from with some amount of focus. My first question is if I'm actually right and this exists (I could be making things up, it happens sometimes xD), and secondly, if OTHER non-senshi things could be stored in that manner as well. Like, a passport or something (important school papers? pencils? etc). And if these things can be stored, is there any limit to what can be/how big it can be? (like, could a senshi wisk away a laptop or something?)

SORRY IF I AM CONFUSING.

rosemilk: Unfortunately, the subspace only works from guardian-created items: cellphones, henshin pens. Otherwise people could totally yank stuff out of subspace all the time. If you've got a non-magical item, you generally have to keep it on you somehow, which sucks if you have no pockets.

codalion: In other words, no Bags of Holding. smile

With his knee, the bag of scrap metal might be a bit too heavy for him. Though what do you mean by "Maybe a few blocks of good reliable metal to cover up the seams?" Are the things he crafts permanent? If they are, when he henshins out of his senshi form, any metal armor he has won't disappear, and the weight of it may be enough to stress out his knee/possibly damage it even more.

Thanks for the crit Maru c:

Started on the Flaws, expanding on Reality Check, virtues are pretty much stripped for now since I need to take more time to think it over.

Not much changed yet as I'm going to go work on school work like a semi-responsible college student, dropped the bag of scrap since yeah lugging that around probably is a bad idea.

Attacks will have to be addressed later and possibly with the aid of a GM? I know originally Rose was very turned off to the idea of Sorrin making weapons especially swords since Cavaliers cover that and weapons are more a Negaverse trait.

As for a general re-work, rank 1: create shield with near by metals. Rank 2: create armor and shield quality still dependent on metals used. New ability at Rank 3: Summon metal that's a higher quality to use with ability 2 to prevent the need of striping a car to make a craft?

UPDATED: Removed a few traits, added a new hobbie and virtues, also detailed the crafting powers more and replaced the 2nd power with a new one, areas scratched out are removed till the new one is approved just in case going back and reworking the original is a better option.

I love the idea of a senshi named after Hephaistos being very hands-on, not just a Mister-Fixit but also in his art.

Could we get a fourth hobby that's group related? Two solos and one group is good, but I feel like your app is so heavily focused on Sorrin HELPING AND FIXING that there's nothing else to him. I have the same issue with Virtues and Flaws - EVERYTHING revolves around him trying to help, and what happens if he can't help, and how he's always planning ways to help. It's a great base, but please FIND MORE to him. Or he comes off as a one-trick-pony.

I think you've also misnamed Idealist. An idealist is someone who has very high/noble goals and ideals (not ideas). They often end up being rather impractical, like great romantics or ye olde knight in shining armour, things that (as nice as they sound in theory) just don't work in society. You're just describing someone who has a lot of ideas/plans.

And I would definitely like a flaw that's an actual FLAW on Sorrin's part. So far all his flaws are that he's too nice and trusting and he wants to help everyone in the world but can't... Very martyrific of him, but not in the least realistic. Where is his bad side?

For me, Eternal attack is still just an upgrade to the previous ones. Even if he's not taking the metal from around him, it's still the same "craft armour or weapons" as the previous two. Either be more specific in the limitations of the first two, or find something else for the third attack. Destroy metal armour/weapons that the enemy is using, make a cage/prison, there are so many more things that can be done with metal crafting than just "armour and/or weapon".

I'd also like to see more specifics in the nature of timing of his attacks. How long does it take to gather the metal? How long to then craft something with it? And how many hits/turns/minutes before it's destroyed?

Overall, what you have is a good base, but it needs more building upon before being accepted.

If you're looking for good flaws for a helpful person, try scoping out Enneagram personality type 2, usually labeled "the Helper".

People who focus on helping others tend toward pride, possessive/smothering friendships, stubbornness, reaction whoring, self-neglect and an addiction to praise.

Helpers are likely to keep an unspoken (and subconscious) tally of all the good deeds they do for someone and will get angry if these deeds aren't repaid. It also doesn't help that they are unlikely to allow someone to do a good deed for them until the helper chooses to cash in his or her expected favors. This does not mean that the helper never had altruistic intents. Their pride just sabotages their efforts.

Since helpers tend to be more attuned to the needs of others than their own, they feel thrive on the appreciation of others and feel that it is the only way to be loved. This sometimes leads to possessive relationships, fabricating needs for others (sometimes physically) or some other method forcing their need to be needed upon others.

More of a situational circumstance than a flaw: While helpers tend to be highly empathetic toward the needs of others, this ability tends to fritz out among emotionally static types. The helper usually becomes a nuisance or indignant in these situations.

IMHO your attacks are a bit too complicated. I'd recommend trying to think of ways to simplify the normal and super attacks -- they seem kinda WoW-ish in the sense there's a lot of criteria for them, and my main concern with that is that all these rules aren't going to hold up in a battle RP. Your attack should be easy to use and easy to understand to maximize battle enjoyability for yourself and other players. <3 I like to conceptualize the starting and super attack to be more like Pokemon moves and the Eternal attack to be like your character's Final Smash, if that makes any sense.

Maybe for levels 1 and 2, focus less on the crafting part and more on metal manipulation? I admit, I'm concerned that the time you'll have to write him melting and shaping metal is going to dampen down battles a bit and get a little wearisome for you to have to write every time he attacks (though this comes from me trying to imagine myself writing with the attacks you have up; mileage may vary). I'd personally suggest having your first attacks being all about melting OR shaping. You could have Hephaistos start out with a molten metal attack -- just have it be low-damage magical senshi metal because potential disfigurement is not cool -- or give him a limited ability to reshape metal objects around him at will WITHOUT having to melt them first.

"Banish the Art" is more for a senshi of Banishment than for a senshi of metal craft, unfortunately. But I think what would work is for his Eternal attack to be when he can shape and use metal effectively -- just please keep the above in mind and consider RP viability as well as whether it fits the sphere. Simple And Fun is the best way to go, with a lot of emphasis on the fun part: try and ask yourself how much you're going to enjoy writing this, or how much other players are going to enjoy writing against it.

One thing that might be fun to explore is that there are many, many things other than weapons, shields and armor that can be made from metal. He could also make a cowbell. Or a crude megaphone. Or a cage. 8DDD Instead of having a bunch of criteria for a few types of metal objects, for the Eternal I recommend a maximum size / mass the object can be but have the ability to make ANYTHING HE WANTS TO so long as it doesn't surpass that limit. There's no need to spell out a bunch of stats for everything he makes, it's fair enough to assume it all has the structural integrity of the metal it is made of.

I see you've made some improvements in Sorrin's personality, I'd just like to see some more information on all of the traits! XD If he's confident, what makes him confident and how does he use his confidence? Does he ever get OVERconfident and offputting because of it? If so, make that a corresponding flaw.

His I Promise I'll Make it Up To You reads off more like a flaw than a virtue: I see him being sort of desperate to stay in people's good graces all the time, and this could get REALLY REALLY ANNOYING for some people, especially those who don't forgive as easily as being bought a movie ticket. Using my own character as an example here, Janice would probably just get MORE pissed off at him if he tried this because she'd percieve it as cheap bribery tactics to get back on her good side. Also, if you want to play on this trait I'd suggest adding on that he's unreliable or something along those lines so this sort of situation has a high enough chance of happening to justify it being on your character form.

While reading over your profile I found I'm Right, You're Wrong and some aspects of Reality Check to come sort of out of left field when compared to what makes up the rest of your character. I had him pinned as kind of a smiley happy Good Neighbor guy for the most part -- and now he's a srsbsns pretentious grouch? Where did this come from? It sort of feels like you added these characteristics just to balance out your character, and it waters down his effectiveness to basically switch personality types depending on the situation he's in. If you want him to be patronizing, it might work better to carry the nice guy vibe on through and make him really smilingly patronizing -- still having the nicehat on, but very politely explaining why he's got the right idea and isn't sure how well your idea is going to work. smile Have you thought about doing it this way? I think you really should think about it. smile smile

Consistency is key when building a character: with that in mind, it's never a bad idea to think about how his good qualities can become drawbacks or sources of annoyance for other characters when writing out his flaw set.
