They had discovered the ice rink during their walkabouts together. Miranda had become keenly interested in this place that held cold floors within it and where you could wear shoes with blades along the bottom to enjoy yourself quite thoroughly. After bits of pleading and otherwise asking repeatedly every time they passed Valeri had finally given in to Miranda's demands and had taken her in (after making sure she was safely bundled up), rented the shoes for her, and then let her go.
Miranda had discovered that she needed to hold onto her tail because otherwise that got cold really, really fast if she just let it fall behind herself as usual. Miranda also discovered that at first she needed Papi to stand in the entry into the rink and hold onto her hands until she felt confident enough. Papi couldn't go into the rink with her since he had a hurt leg; she could understand that so long as he stayed in view she was perfectly fine.
Now she was on her own, with no one to hold her hands and several inches away from the wall and arms held widely to her side for balance as she stood still. She stared over at Valeri from where he stood and gave an uncertain smile and then started to try and move only to slip and fall rather harshly with a soft 'Oof!'
Attempt number forty-three was failure. Determinedly she struggled to her bladed feet on her own.

"This is a dumb idea."
"Mm."
"This is a dumb idea and I'm gonna die."
"You said you were bored."
Admitting you were bored, Zach decided, could lead to very sucky things as well as very cool things. Having Rene take him to Izzy's house was cool. Having Rene decide he needed to learn a new skill was not cool. He gripped the wall, trying to will his ankles to be steady.
"Why aren't you out here?"
"Because I'm not stupid?" Rene snorted, flexing her wings. "I'm back-heavy, boyo. I'll break a wing if I fall."
"I hate you. I hate you so much."
"I know. I know. Now go out and skate."
"Hate so much." But, being an adventerous lad, Zach pushed out from the wall, made a few game efforts of skating, and fell backwards. OW.
"ENK."
"Just give it the old college try, Zach!" Rene called.
"I HATE YOU. I'M IN KINNERGARDEN, b***h."

She hadn't really noted the other the other people around her at first she was concentrating on moving in fact she had managed to inch forward by using her arms and legs in a manner JUST SO on her own and was feeling rather elated. Miranda heard the words of a boy near by and her ears twitched at one word he shouted in particular and that got her curiosity up. The chubby girl stood there for a moment as she clumsily made herself turn and started to move toward the boy. Maybe he could answer her inquiry! Why wouldn't he? She was curious and the world loved curious people (she believed).
Sure she could ask Papi but he was on the other side of the wall and she didn't feel like asking him, it didn't seem right to ask him the question since he never used the word, he probably never heard of it!
"Excu'th'e me," Miranda began as soon as she was closer to the formerly shouting word, "but what i'th a bi'th?" Oh her lisp annoyed her so! She wanted to fix it once and for all and talk normally like her Papi, like this boy, like everyone else!
Val unfortunately heard her inquiry from where he sat and gave an inward flinch...Great.

Zach rubbed his back and looked up to the girl. Well, she was fat one! But she wasn't wearing those skimpy bathing suits like the girls at the waterpark, so he really didn't see the need to comment on her shape.
"You talk funny." He decided, pushing himself up onto his hands, then perilously pushing himself up to his feet. Ehnk. There. He tried to stand as still as possible, so to not fall again. Only once he was stable again did he think to answer her question.
"A b***h isa bad word to call someone when you's mad, and when you want to make everyone mad at your parent." Zach explained. He didn't know what it was exactly, but it sure made people mad, and that was generally his plan if he was using it.
He eyed Miranda again. Hmmm. "So you shouldn't use it. Cuz you're prolly nice, and I'm bad. You look nice. And squishy."

"I know'th," Miranda said with a bit of primness to her tone but she still seemed cheerful despite all that. She was more annoyed at herself than at the boy for pointing out that she had an odd manner of speech. Still she waited until he was ready and would likely ask again if he didn't answer soon, which he did so yay for that!
She listened to the explanation and tilted her head a bit to the side. Why would a word make people mad and further more why shouldn't she use it even if she was nice? Curious. Still, she sort of grasped the concept maybe she would ask Papi anyways to see if he really knew or not just to make sure, not that she didn't trust the boy she is simply curious and wanted to know more. Miranda was certainly not offended by being called squishy, she knew she was and simply accepted it.
After that tidbit of internal thought she nodded a bit, "Kie," she said simply as her feet tried escape from under her. She adjusted her stance and waved her arms about to try and keep herself upright.
"I'm Miranda," she introduced herself whether or not he asked. The rat-girl didn't really mind.

"Zach." The man-o-war child said, wobbling about on the ice and puffing out his cheeks.
Hmmm. Her speech reminded him of someone. Zach edged forward on his skates and thought. Now, there weren't too many people that Zach knew that talked funny. Who had that kind of a speech....
Oh!
"You talk like Yeesha." Zach said, and he seemed to relax. "It's okay, then, cuz it's your teef, Mirry." He decided. "This is hard, Mirry. Do you fall a lot too?"
Hello, mood swing.

"Z...z...Za...Z'th'ack." She tried to pronounce his name without the damned lisp but alas it was present as always, "Za," she had decided would be a name she would call him. It was a part of his name, plus he started calling her Mirry, which she liked. So he shouldn't mind too much, right?
Miranda tilted her head from side to side before she simply said, "Dunno 'er," with a small nod. "Yeh'th, th'tupid teefs," she agreed with a small laugh and watched as Zach had moved forward a bit. "It i'th hard. I fall down lots, yeh'th," she agreed with a small giggle and shrugged, "If you hold your arm'th a certain way it i'th a lot ea'th'ier."
The rat-girl was a newbie to the ice as well so there wasn't much in the way of suggestion she could offer.

Zach experimentally held his arms out after looping his tendrils around them several times. He didn't like the feel of ice on them too much. "Don't touch. I sting."
"I don't like falling." He said, moving slowly. People zipped around on the skates, and Zach glared at each and every one. Hmph. They were good at this and he didn't like that.
"But I'll get better. And you will too. Then we won't fall unless someone trips us." He decided, nodding his head.

She was mildly interested in the tendrils and certainly even would have almost touched them, unknowingly, if Zach hadn't warned her about that, so thank goodness for that. Miranda simply nodded in understanding, sometimes you just don't touch things and being stung sounded unpleasant so she decided that this was the best advice she had ever gotten to date and decided to honor it.
"Th'ometime'th you gotta fall though," she said sagely. Miranda didn't seem to mind people zipping around her except for when someone bumped her which caused her to squeak as her precarious balance got threatened. Her arms waved crazily and finally she went down with a small wail.
Valeri was watching and flinched, that couldn't have felt good.
Miranda let out a huff but nodded to Zach, "Yeh'th. We'll get better," she said determinedly as she tried to get back to her feet again.
To her credit she didn't cry yet.

And Zach wasn't a happy kid at that. He glared at the person and started to holler.
"HEY. WATCH OUT, JERKFACE. WE'S LITTLE. HOPE YOU BREAK YOUR LEG!" He huffed, sliding down to one knee with a bit of shaking and effort. "Hands're safe. Just watch out for stingers. We can get up t'gether."
Well, that was pretty cute.

The person that had bumped Miranda only favored Zach with a backwards glance and was about to either blow them off or retort when suddenly karma stepped in and the offender turned around only to meet face first with wall and glass and slide down the wall with a comic expression across their face. Miranda, naturally, had a giggle at that person's expense before she returned her attention to Zach.
Miranda couldn't help but admire (yes admire) the outspokenness of Zach when he had yelled at the person that had bumped her and suddenly desired to emulate this behavior, at least a little bit, maybe not as Zach-like but more like herself. She was Miranda not Zach.
She nodded as she reached out and lightly grasped Zach's hand, "Kie," she said simply and began to make a better attempt at standing now that she had better support. Once she was up on her feet she let out a deep sigh, "Wanna try th'kating around?"
Holding hands or not it didn't matter to the rat-girl but at least being nearby they could help each other immediately if the other fell.

Zach had also laughed at the person. Served you right, douchebag! He grinned at Miranda and nodded. "Yeah, can keep skating. If we call, can help each other!" It sounded like a damn good plan to him.
It was funny, how he was. The little beast was always nasty at first, but if he liked you, he was easy to get along with. If you ignored the profanity.

She had almost felt a little bad for laughing at the person until Zach also laughed and that made her feel a good deal better about it and, in fact, she now didn't feel bad at all! Miranda nodded at his words, "Yu'th!" That was the plan and she was glad that Zach had seemed very enthused about it. After a brief moment of gathering her bearings, while still holding his hand, she inched a little forward careful not to unbalance her newfound friend.
With her light experimentation she had managed to note that there needed a bit of 'fluidity' in the movements of the legs though she was a little uncertain she'd manage it. She glanced over at Zach and waited to see what he would do.

Zach wobbled slightly as he skated, still getting his bearings. He'd slide forward a bot, wobble and pinwheel his free arm, and catch his balance. It was hard to do with a person, and hard to do by yourself!
"This is HARD." He puffed, getting angry at the general idea of skating now. "Makes me mad!" But he didn't seem to want to stop yet. You see, he didn't want skating to beat him. He'd learn how to do it then never ever do it again.
That'd show skating who was boss!

Miranda paused in her exploration of movement and skating. As she did so it had come to her attention that she was also thirsty at this point and could use a small break from all this clumsy wobbling and mixtures of success and failures. She gave his hand a light reassuring squeeze and nodded firmly, "Think we can make it over there'th?" She pointed toward the opening where her own guardian sat behind the partition so he could keep an eye on Miranda.
"We can take a break," she added for incentive, "and ha'th hot chocolat'th."
