[[RP between Tsunake's "Vulcan" and Epee's "Yei Umeko" - please don't post without permission. Plot RP to put Vulcan in position of power within KotC!]]

It had been a while since she'd returned home with her mate and things had been running rather smoothly if she dared to say. Ah, there had been dramas here and there in terms of her offspring - a certain son had returned home after vanishing for nearly a year and it had been explosive. Well, it had been explosive in the sense that her eldest son had positively torn through her youngest and left everyone with a headache. She as the doting mother, was delighted that her son was home...she was even more delighted that he was in love. Alas, she had permitted him to escape almost immediately unpon such a confession and as a consequence she was left at a bit of a loose end.

Oh! She cared deeply for her adoptive son (the only youngling that really needed her right now), but even he was entitled to explore on his own. He was permitted to locate his own mentors and tutors to pursue his own talents. Really, it was all very depressing for a mother... All her offspring had flown the nest or were at a stage within their lives where her continued presence wasn't a necessity - it was just embarassing. Admittedly, she rather enjoyed embarassing her children (as every parent did) but there was a time and a place for everything.

And so, she found herself retracing steps she hadn't taken in many a year. Ever since her eldest had taken up the reins of Islagiatt and had watched the borders with hawkish eyes, she had no need to patrol. However, for old times sake she found herself following familiar trails as she climbed the slopes towards the misty regions. The going was a little trecherous and she probably wouldn't be able to reach the top in the winter season but the crisp air would be refreshing.

It was nice to see old sights again and every now and again she paused here and there to admire the scenary. Gazing down upon the lowlands, it was only then that she realised just how tiny everything looked from her mountainous home. It really was rather staggering!

How fragile this earth was without its frozen barrier. It smoked under his hooves, likely would have screamed if it had voice to do so. The resentment that boiled in his veins threatened to overflow at the thought, but the strange, hellish look stallion was silent as he continued his slow and steady journey down from his self-isolation upon the icy peaks. He couldn't hide his progress even if he wanted to; the heavy sound of his hooves and the telltale hiss of burning earth, as well as the incriminating hoof prints he left behind marked a very clear and obvious trail. At least it was a trail that few were inclined to follow.

Leaves pulled back and withered whenever he brushed by, unable to take the heat that poured from his molten, shifting body. Vulcan had no goal, no set location in mind that he was determined to get to. Merely coming down from these mountains had been the first step. Eyes from side to side underneath the skull-like mask that had been branded upon his face, and his tail lashed as though contemplating what he should do now.

Then, he realized, there was someone on his path. A mare. One heavy hoof froze in midair before it settled itself firmly upon the soil with a fizzling sound, unconsciously standing his ground as he eyed the other. An older mare, yes, her coat not quite as bright as his own. So the second step presented itself now, and it was up to him to decide what to do with it.

If she grew much closer, there was a chance she would be injured. He remembered those memories well. Only a muted rumble began to echo in his chest, potentially a warning, but lacking any hostility that signaled he would attack her.

It was for her own sake to keep her distance, after all.

She'd heard him and her ears swivelled immediately in response. Her brow lifted and then she very slowly shifted her weight to look around. It was rare that the mare moved in 'slow motion', she was always constantly flitting here and there but she did have her moments. It would have been amusing to any who knew her, but to Vulcan it would probably seem like she was being overly cautious - that she was nervous. She was nothing of the sort of course, it wasn't like Yei to have such feelings but she was rather surprised and just a little baffled. She hadn't known many soquili who would wander this far north and more to the point she was rather confused as to rather the borderguards hadn't stopped him. It was dangerous after all - were they slacking in their jobs already?

She and Sylph would have words.

Unaware of the immediate threat he possessed, she tilted her head to one side and took his form in. Her eyes drifted along the contours of his body and paused on occasions and the more 'bizarre' features. He was a mutant, she could certainly see that much but he wasn't a vicious one; his eyes gave him away. He wasn't dangerous or at least he didn't give off the aura of being deliberately violent so she had no reason to panic. Although her shrieking 'guards, help me!' might have caused a bit of a stir - they'd come of course, but they'd probably think she was joking. It would be something she would do, the comical damsel in distress routine...

"Well," she announced at last and took a few steps forward so that she didn't have to shout. "You -" she paused as the heat hit her and shook her head, it wasn't any form of extreme heat yet but given the frequency that it pulsed out at she had a feeling the closer she got the warmer she would become. Ah, she'd always loved radiators (her mate was one) but she suspected this guy may very well have blown Grencia out of the water in that regard.

"You look a little flushed," she said finally. She had meant to point out that he was new here but it somehow seemed more appropriate to inform him of the fact he was rather warm. Not your usual conversation starter, but she'd never been someone who operated the way society expected her too. "A new face no less, did you walk the whole way down here? It's terribly cold up there but then again I suppose you wouldn't notice," she took a breath and furrowed her brow. "I mean you're terribly warm, but does that mean that you can't feel the cold either?"

It was a valid question, one couldn't make assumptions based on the matter as they may be inaccurate!

He did indeed mistake her sudden alteration of movement for wariness, and it was beyond his knowledge to realize that he was in a place that... well, ordinarily, there was no possible way he should have been there. So she watched him, and he watched her, relearning the shape and form of 'his species' as he took in her long, sweeping mane and tail, her long legs, her features. Strange, yes. Normal, yes, he remembered that much.

Then she took a few steps forward, and spoke. He hung on her words cautiously, taking them in and forcing his mind to process them to something more intelligible. It had been a long time since he'd been spoken to, or used actual words for that matter, but not long enough that he had forgotten.

After straining for a moment, he understood 'flushed'--and snorted smoke in a way that could only possibly be taken as grim amusement. Flushed. Yes. "I don't feel." The stallion rumbled slowly, and he was indeed referring to the cold. It kept him calm when he raged, wrapped him up in an embrace that no one else could and soothed his anger until he was left feeling sluggish and quiet.

"Came down from the mountains." He continued after a moment, ending abruptly as if that's all that needs to be said on the subject. He didn't know it was nearly impossible to skirt through these lands unnoticed... but it had been a long, long time ago when he'd done so, didn't even realize a herd, and a prominent, powerful one at that ruled this scrap of land.

All that had mattered to him had been the freezing mountains, and the lonely, barren little cave where he'd spent most of his days.

He hadn't been in contact with another soquili for a while, his words were broken and the pause between phrases was haggered and rapt with thought. He by no means suffered from some sort of mental problem, but the stallion was a hermit and Yei required no divine sign to see this. Despite his lonely past though, he did manage to express himself after a period of silence and she popped her lips thoughtfully - so he didn't feel and he had lived all the way up the slopes without a single one of her guardians seeing him? Her eyes seemed to sparkle with something that would have rang alarm bells in any of the men who knew her well - she had an idea!

Thankfully, it didn't involve mares.

Instead, Yei had noted very quickly that his elusive nature was very useful. He had a staggering ability to be unaffected by the cold and more importantly he had dodged the constant patrols. He was good, she sincerely suspected that as a child he would have been absolutely spectacular at hide and seek... provided he hadn't radiated with quite so much heat when he was younger.

"Oh, well that's a very useful quality to have up here," she pondered aloud and smiled appreciatively as she absorbed the warmth from this distance. He still wasn't radiating heat (at this distance) on the same level as her mate but she knew that the closer she got, the warmer he'd become. Tempting as it was to gain more heat she had a sneaking suspicion her mate was probably less of a health hazard to her! "Would certainly make for a much more comfortable life for you up here than it is for those without a thick coat!"

She paused.

"You really lived all the way up there?" she turned her gaze up to the mist covered slopes, an impish smile on her lips. "Ooooh wait until I tell the boys that they missed something quite so impressive. A whole soquili and they're up there all the time!"

The mare's eyes glittered in a way he wasn't quite sure he liked, and one ear tipped back as though he was contemplating just what that meant. In truth, he hadn't seen what he'd looked like for a long, long time; he didn't know that eyes could spark with many emotions, be they amusement, glee, or malice. This elder mare was his teacher, in that sense, and he observed her carefully, if patiently while she seemed to mull over her thoughts. Even if she had nothing more to say, that was fine. He'd endured years of silence, and it failed to bother him now.

Ah, she spoke again. Her lips curled, too, and the living holocaust studied the expression with a polite sort of patient. There was no response to her general statement other than a slight shifting of his massive hooves, an agreement. He supposed she was correct, yes. It had never dawned on him during that time of blind rage and horrid temper that the cold might ever been an issue. He did not feel enough for it to be an issue, no matter the weather. All the bitter wind had done was calm him, make him sluggish and content enough to remain without harming anyone.

"Really." Vulcan would respond belatedly with a heavy nod of his head for emphasis. He'd lived up there for... well, he didn't keep track of the time. "In a cave." It made sense to him, that he would have been missed. Sometimes the entrance froze over entirely, but he would melt it again whenever the need to sate his thirst and appetite came around.

It was normal enough, anyway, to him.

"In a cave," Yei repeated rather flatly and lifted a brow. Well that would definitely explain why he had been missed and if he was a hermit he wouldn't have made any attempts to show himself - to anyone. There wouldn't have been any rumours or musings about anything living so far up the mountain and from a logical aspect it shouldn't have been possible. However, here in front of her was a mutant soquili who had been blessed by the spirits to live in such incredibly hostile conditions. It was incredibly impressive to her even if she never aspired to live that high above the world herself. After a few moments her vague expression vanished and she nodded in a manner that indicated she had probably come to some sort of decision - well if he'd been up there all this time then he should at least be introduced to some of the other soquili who dwelled on the slopes nowadays...especially from a security point of view so they didn't attempt to remove him!

"That's certainly a skill to be proud of," she admitted after a few moments and shuffled her hooves. She met his gaze and regarded him for a little while longer before flashing another of her typical smiles. "Well in that case, I would say welcome to Islagiatt's home but I think a little bit of it is yours too!" She announced with a flourish. She didn't give him the opportunity to interject, lest he argue over who owned what territory (though she suspected he wouldn't) and glanced over her shoulder for a moment before returning her attention to the male before her. "I think it's only fair that you should be introduced to some of the other folks up here..."

"Would you like to come for dinner?" she enquired politely and tilted her head to the side. "Our borderguards have never seen you before and I think that you should meet them if only so they don't try to remove you by mistake!" she advised. She wouldn't make mention of the meeting they were having lest she assume too much but she could take a small gamble and hope that he might find an interest in that meeting if he felt so inclined as to eavesdrop.

...Eh, but it seemed she was the only one to eavesdrop nowadays.

Pity that.

A nod. In a cave. It was becoming increasingly apparent that Vulcan was a very simple, straightforward creature. He saw no need for details, and therefore didn't even think to supply them. If asked, he would answer, but he was curious by this bright, cheerful mare, tilting his head to better glimpse her over the skull sealed to his face. His thick, serpentine tail dragged itself in the dirt for a moment as she watched him, and he watched her, and when she announced that he was in the home of the Islagiatt, he only grunted his acknowledgment, and, when she mentioned introductions, took a heavy step forward.

"Yes." Short, but sincere. He'd thrived on snow and the short, scrubby plants that somehow managed to thrive up in the bitter cold, and so that was what he equated 'dinner' to. The mention of others still stuck in his mind even if he didn't necessarily address them right away, taking another step, but careful to keep his distance. He didn't want to burn the mare, certainly not.

"How many?" It was his version of polite, considering his lack of socialization skills. How many lived up here, he wanted to know? He had no qualms with her saying this was the home of the Islagiatt; there had been a time where he had been monstrously territorial about his sparse little cave, but he had willfully abandoned it. It was his no longer, and he was a stranger to these lands.
