Life in High Reaches had turned into an interesting and welcome change on so many levels. There wasn't a feeling of foreboding disaster and people were so much friendlier compared to Ista. At least, for all that Veyes could see from his first few days. No one looked at him with the evil eye. It was obvious his past had not come to haunt him here at least in the grand scheme of things. However, one pale Ghost had taken up residence...one that he never met in life but it followed him in a strange way that he never quite understood even if his imaginary world tried desperately understand in its own unique way.

The Man with the answers spoke rarely on this complex puzzle. And the Shadow, well he never asked the questions because it would have been rude. However, triangle grew between a ghost, a shadow and a man twisting into a profound conundrum. Yes, this was the way that the world warped inside the head of a dreamer.

It wasn't long before he had been assigned chores; his hands and eyes attended the matters with diligence and effort. He could be very serious about his work as he learned the tasks but after the learning was done, it became auto-pilot and his mind would return where gravity had no hold on him. Still, the Ghost...haunted that space...and the Shadow could only follow in the Man's footsteps whispering one word....Why?

About 5 days after arrival, time offered up such a moment where Veyes found himself free sitting in the dining hall. Actually, trying to come to terms with how quickly the days passed. The weather wasn't as warm but the food was hearty. Somehow, even if other things didn't work out, he might be able to make this place home for awhile.

He hadn't exactly been avoiding Veyes, but he certainly hadn't been looking for him. When he spotted the youth in the dininghall however, he reached a decision. Enough was enough, but there would never really be enough time for him to set out the words inside his own head. Still though, enough was enough. Even if he wasn't quite sure he had it sorted yet he couldn't put this off any longer. Suddenly he didn't feel very hungry anymore. He'd look like an idiot if he walked away from the serving hatch with nothing though, so the rider helped himself to a chunk of bread and a cup of klah. He could probably stomach that much, and if not he could just leave it...

Right.

Now he needed to go over there.

At a mental nudge of encouragement from Raith, he moved across the hall and sat down opposite Veyes. "Hi." Well, it was a start. "Do you have time to talk this evening?" There, getting better. He couldn't talk about what needed to be talked about here of course, they'd have to go up to his weyr. He wanted privacy for this, partly because he didn't like the idea of strangers overhearing intimate details about him, and partly because he had no idea how Veyes was going to react. No idea how he was going to react come to that. A part of him wanted to keep it like that, to just keep pushing the matter away, but the rest of him wouldn't allow it. It was time to sort this out, one way or another. It had been hanging over them for too long.

Veyes glanced up from his really thick stew into L'thor's eyes for a moment before answering. "Hi...sure. I've got time after this." He wasn't going to leave good food behind not after having a few burnt ones at Ista. "I should be done pretty soon." he said as he took another bite. Veyes tried to take things slower even though his heart raced within. It was his attempt to brace himself for whatever was to be said later. He wasn't sure he was ready to hear what L'thor had to say but he imagined Con kicking his a** if he didn't take the opportunity while it presented itself.

When he finally at the last bite, he looked up at L'thor while wiping his lips with his napkin. "I'm ready." Well, that part was sort of the truth but he wouldn't say no. Picking up his bowl and empty cup, he placed them in the bin and left with L'thor.

As they approached Raith, he smiled softly but then also realized that at this Weyr there wasn't any way to get up or down except by dragon. That made things really private for the riders but obviously, others couldn't get up or down without dragon help. In some ways that might be great for their conversation. In others, Veyes wouldn't be able to just leave if things got too rough on his heart. That part didn't set well with him but maybe it was better this way. That meant L'thor couldn't just leave either, unless Raith was willing to take him out.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 17, 2009 8:05 am

"Ready?" Raith asked of L'thor as he mounted up and waited for Veyes to join him.

"No," L'thor replied heavily, "but I'm as ready as I'll ever be." Once the pair of them were secure Raith took off, and climbed slowly up to their weyr. It was one of the highest on the caldera, and gave spectacular views, but as they alighted and dismounted L'thor couldn't help feeling a bit trapped. Raith, he suspected, would not agreed to take either of them down until they had talked. Indeed, the moment they moved back from the green she gave them both a Look, and stepped back off the ledge.

"Ah," L'thor turned to Veyes with a weak smile, "I think that was a slightly unsubtle hint... Come in and sit down, won't you?" Trying to steel his nerve, L'thor turned and stepped inside his weyr. It was a nice one, larger than he'd had at Ista. Even Raith's bed was big enough to take a smallish bronze, and was covered with black sand that he had gathered himself from the beaches of Ista. His own quarters beyond were just as comfortable; he had covered the floor with rugs, and placed hangings on the walls with simple but pleasing patterns that called a tropical environment to mind, to his mind at any rate. Of interest right now however were a pair of wickerwork chairs set side by side, looking out of the weyr's entrance.

Wishing he could have put this off longer, or just made it go away, L'thor dropped down into one of them and rubbed his face wearily. His hands rasped against his cheeks slightly; he had forgotten to shave this morning apparently, but thanks to how slowly his facial hair grew, his tanned skin, and lightish chestnut hair it wasn't too obvious. He didn't want to look like a forgetful, distracted, scruffy idiot, so he dropped his hands into his lap and pretended he hadn't noticed, hoped Veyes wouldn't either.

Veyes slid on to Raith and gave her a good pat after he secured himself in the straps. It was pretty amazing how natural some things had become even if he didn't have a dragon of his own. "Ready Raith." He said trying to sound more confident than he actually was. Having to wrap his arms around L'thor for the brief flight gave him a mix of longing and frustration. The Ghost, the Shadow and the Man finally were going to meet. But what would that meeting be like and what truths would the Man reveal.

So as they landed he unbuckled the straps and slide off gracefully giving Raith another pat as he moved away. He really adored Raith even if things weren't so hot with L'thor at the moment. As she took off he almost felt like MOM had determined how things were going to be between her 'kids'. He blinked for just a moment as his eyes took in the larger weyr then nodded at L'thor's words. "You have a nice place. Bigger than the last one." He followed him into the weyr to the wicker chairs and took the opposite one from the Man.

If there had been a third chair, the invitation would not need to been offered because the Ghost was already here and the Shadow knew that as he watched the Man rub his face. L'thor looked a bit more scruffy than usual. Not hard for Veyes to tell considering the good habits L'thor had taught him about hygiene and hair. It told Veyes that whatever had been on L'thor's mind was really affecting his day to day life.

So he waited with the patience of a Shadow that hung at the edges of the Man's feet. His fingers slipped around the edges of the wicker and he attempted not to fidget but remain rather still. He could feel the pounding within his chest wishing he had brought something to keep fingers occupied. Any distraction might have been nice.

Right. Crunch time. "I suppose I have a lot to explain," L'thor began slowly. "This... this isn't easy, so you'll have to forgive me if I'm not as eloquent as usual. The last few days I've done little but try to work out how to express everything I want to and... well, results haven't been all that amazing, but I'm never going to have a perfect speech planned out, what I've managed to get sorted out inside my head will have to do..." He wished it was over right now, he'd said everything, and just had to wait for Veyes to react. That wasn't going to happen though. He had to make the first move. He wished he didn't. He wished none of this had ever happened.

"I'll start at the beginning, since that makes sense... When I first saw you," he said slowly, "that day... I think I told you at the beach, it was the anniversary of D'los' death. What I didn't say was that for a moment I thought you were him." Unable to meet Veyes' stormy blue eyes, he kept his gaze lowered. "You look a lot alike," he went on, his voice soft and distant, lacking it's usual snap and sparkle, "same colour eyes, hair, complexion. You wear your hair like he did too, and you're not dissimilar facially. It was like the world was laughing at me, I swear, I was just so angry about everything... So that's why I shouted at you. The of course there was the cat," L'thor sighed and rubbed his hands over his upper thighs distractedly, thinking vaguely of the scars that still patterned them. "I wasn't thinking straight. I thought - if you can call it thinking - that he was going to die all over again if you died. If I had been thinking properly I'd have left it to Raith, but as you know well by now I don't tend to think with my head in moments of crisis..."

That was that much explained, but it was the important bit, and he needed to move on fast before Veyes got the idea their whole relationship had been based on similarity to D'los. "It didn't take me long to start liking you for yourself," he said, clearing his throat and blinking away moisture that had begun to build up in his eyes. "I still loved in you the traits that he'd had, but because I love those traits in anyone, not because it made you like him. In personality you're more different than similar; both dreamers but you're so much more driven, full of dreams for the real world rather than just fantasies and you're not half as shy and... well, the list of differences goes on for miles." Wiping his eyes, L'thor looked up at last and gave his friend - he hoped they were still friends - a tremulous smile. "At the beach... When you said what you said I was shocked to say the least. I didn't really think it through at the time but when I got back to my weyr... I don't know," he looked back down quickly and shook his head, "you got tangled in my mind. I started having these dreams where the two of you were mixed up; you looking like him, him like you, swapping voices and mannerisms and..."

L'thor's voice died away, and he paused to wipe his eyes again before clasping his hands in his lap. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair on either of them to have to live with this. Nobody was to blame, everybody got hurt. That was life, he supposed. "It all just got too much," he went on eventually, his voice now little more than a whisper. "I felt like I was... like I was trapped in a messed up mixture of the past and the present. I didn't know how to deal with it, or even if I could deal with it. The V'kain told me the northern Weyrs were desperate for transfers. I convinced myself I was just investigating them out of interest. When I chose to go, I convinced myself it was just for Raith's sake. I tried to make myself forget the strange dreams, but they didn't go away, I just ended up missing you on top of them... And I suppose that's it," he shrugged helplessly, and kept his eyes fixed on his hands, ashamed of the tears that were beginning to slide down his cheeks. "I'm sorry I left, but it was the only way I could think of coping at the time. It all just hurt to much, and I wanted to get away."

Shells. He felt as though he'd aged about forty turns during that speech. Now suddenly he wished he hadn't said anything, and wondered why before he'd spoken he'd just wished to hear what Veyes thought. He didn't want to know. He couldn't see his reaction being good. If offered the option of vanishing between to die right now, he might just have been tempted to take it.

Veyes listened and his eyes widened. This wasn't anything he had ever expected. Not in the least! He...looked like the Ghost? He looked like D'los? He was like D'los? It was almost true that he was a Shadow. At first he had felt he had been unable to compete with a dead man but never that he was so much like him. Now so many things seemed to fall into place. Especially, the first day they met. Why he could be so angry at someone he didn't know...but at the time, L'thor might have truely thought he had known him. His head tilted to one side not so certain how to take this enlightenment. D'los was dead. Would he always be walking in the shadow of a ghost with with L'thor. It was obvious now that L'thor hadn't let D'los rest in peace, in fact, it was possible the man was truly haunted every time Veyes appeared.

However, L'thor did continue and it was more obvious that the man knew who he was but he doubted that changed much if the man was still subconsciously grieving every time they were together. It was very hard for Veyes to choose the right emotions. He felt...a little angry...but more sad and way out of his league. His own eyes were dotted with the emotions he felt. He couldn't change what he was and now he wasn't sure how many things L'thor might have done subconsciously to help give him more qualities akin to the Ghost. In some ways, he was still feeling the shock of revelation. But even if it weren't the right thing to bring up, he still was very much in love with L'thor. And that part of him wanted to help the man. He wished that L'thor could see him for who he was.

So what should he do? how should he react? That was easy. It was as if '3rd chair's occupant' told him within that imaginary world that spun within the young man's head and encouraged him forward. He got up slowly and walked over to L'thor, crouching down in front of the man's chair then wrapped his arms around him and pulled him close for a warm hug. It was a simple expression that might say more than complex words at the moment. L'thor wasn't in any mind frame to talk...he was more in the mindset to get it off his chest. His fingertips stroked over L'thor's hair hoping that this would help the man find his center once more and pull himself away from what Veyes might consider could become nervous break down.

"It's ok..." he finally said. "You're going to be alright. I know this was really hard on you. But...maybe this is what you need to do finally. Get it off your chest." he said with a gentle and soft voice just against L'thor's head as he held him.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:24 pm

He was more than grateful for the hug, and sank into it readily. "Mrrr," he articulated vaguely, "thanks... I will, I just need to... well, I'm not sure but I'll sharding well do it." Had a part of him kept seeing D'los even after he'd got to know Veyes? Had he liked having him back in some way, but not been able to cope when things got too close? Maybe, he wasn't able to analyze himself well enough to be sure one way or the other. The only thing he was sure of was that he was going to fix this. Somehow he was going to fix it. Perhaps it needed to start with a gesture.

Making another vague noise in his throat L'thor pulled back, wiped his face dry, and smiled. "Got to start somewhere," he muttered as he pulled back one sleeve and began to fiddle with the knot that fastened the leather bracelet he wore. The thing was pretty well solid, he had been wearing it for about eight turns without taking it off. The only thing that had kept it from falling apart or going totally rigid was regular doses of oil. Eventually however, by using his teeth, he managed to unpick the knot, and remove the bracelet. Doing so didn't feel especially significant. Was that a good thing or a bad thing?

He laid it out in his palm and inspected it thoughtfully. Brown leather cords knotted together into a simple but pleasing design. The two cords that fastened it ended in painted green beads. The paint, now he really looked at it, had mostly worn off leaving behind plain wood. "I never saw this as hanging onto the past," he said thoughtfully, "maybe it isn't. It made me smile when I looked at it but now... I think it's time I put it away somewhere safe. That way I can look at it when I like, but it isn't part of my daily life. Does that make sense?" He felt a bit calmer now. Things were by no means fixed just by him taking the bracelet off, but it was a beginning, or so he hoped.

Veyes watched him and could only nod as L'thor picked off the leather bracelet. He hadn't known the significance of it until now. Maybe at one point the bracelet was a loving gift but now, it had possibly turned into a shackle. Although, he had a feeling that in time, if L'thor wanted, it would be a sweet memory rather than a tie that bound his soul to loss.

"Yes, it makes sense." Veyes answered with just a slightly encouraging tone. He fighred just letting L'thor speak his mind and work through those thought processes one by one was a better thing at the moment until the man was really wanting to converse. It was going to take some time for L'thor to let go little by little but Veyes thought the bracelet was a sincere start.

He shifted a bit where he crouched and just looked up at L'thor seeing a bit more calm to his face. He had a feeling that after tonight, L'thor might sleep a bit easier than he had done in days...maybe turns. "Do you want to talk some more? I'm willing just to listen. I can't say I'm an expert at what you're going through but I'll do my best to help."

It was hard for him to say what the best course of conversation should be. Veyes tried to keep in mind that he should carefully be aware of his own desires and dreams to not let them interfere with the man's healing process. Even if that meant he wouldn't be able to say some things that he felt deeply. He wasn't anywhere close to the downward spiral L'thor had dropped himself into. He figured that L'thor would lead this conversation and if the balance was able to shift...he might put for a few questions. But it was better not to pull to hard on a fragile chord.

PostPosted: Tue Nov 17, 2009 2:56 pm

"Humm..." L'thor studied the bracelet for a few moments longer before tossing it over onto the table beside his bed to sort out later. "What to talk about?" he wondered aloud. "I... humm... I don't really want to talk about him. I think I'd like to tell you about what I've been up to since I left." That seemed nice and safe, and enjoyable too. He'd had fun, and a few scrapes, and he wanted to pull Veyes back into his life... He did. He wasn't sure how easy it would be at first but he wanted to do it. Maybe if he just started spending time with him again, the mixed up feeling would fade. Veyes was not D'los by any stretch of the imagination, being around him should cement that fact in his mind.

"The weather you'll have seen for yourself," he said eventually, "not at all like Ista, I've had to totally change my wardrobe! Luckily, I couldn't bring my big wooden wardrobe here so I sold it and that gave me the marks to get hold of clothes, and those nice furs I have on the bed. What else? Oh! My wing," he snorted and rolled his eyes. "Got a couple of girls from Ista in it which is nice, but the wingleader and second are pissy about female riders, they ask a lot more of the girls than they do of the rest of us... I think this place has a nicer atmosphere though, don't you?" He'd rambled and babbled a bit there, but he was feeling better than he had before this little talk had begun. Maybe talking about it plus a little time was all he needed to get back to normal again. He certainly hoped so.

Veyes wasn't sure if L'thor was starting to dodge what he had just been through or what but it was rambling about things that filled his life. It was almost as if he were trying to putty in a hole really quick rather than examine the contents that made the hole.

It didn't seem to be the right direction, although Veyes sat for a bit with a gentle smile listening as he said he would. He couldn't be too firm but maybe he had to start tugging a few things out of the man so they could get back on track. That part wasn't going to be easy because Veyes wasn't a master at emotional problems. He'd have to choose something that fit but still was pertinent to the rambling that L'thor had just spoken.

"Oh yes, it does seem like a nicer place than Ista. I do agree. I can see why a rider would like it better as would a candidate like me. Was D'los a part of the same wing when you were at Ista?" he never asked that question before but it fit sort of in the conversation. A gentle poke as to why they were here.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:54 pm

L'thor sighed, a large part of him was relieved to have his ramble interrupted. He wanted to talk but... but he didn't know what about. Being directed was definitely useful. "Not at first," he said after only a brief pause. "Raith and his green Allieth were fairly similar in their strengths, and no wing needed two like that at the time of our graduation. About... six turns later I think it was there was a bit of reorganization going around and we managed to get on the same wing. We stayed in the same one until he died."

He would never forget hearing Allieth's scream as the young brown appeared from between in the wrong place and slammed into her full force. He'd remember how Raith spun out of formation and raced down towards her sister, to what end he had no idea. They couldn't have saved them, but they hadn't been able to help trying to reach them. The crack as the two pairs hit the ground, and the stillness of the dead dragons, the twitching of the dying brown rider...

"Allieth died in the accident, when she hit the ground," he said softly, wondering if it was right to give out these details or if they should stay buried. "The rider of the brown that crashed into her and his dragon died there too. D'los lived a few days longer... He only woke up once, a mercy I think. Without Allieth... Well, he wasn't really himself anymore. I think most of him died the moment she did." Seeing his weyrmate's face so clouded with pain, and yet so indifferent to his suffering had been heart-rending beyond all belief. It shouldn't have been like that. If death had been D'los' fate, he should at least been kept from ever knowing the agony of losing his dragon. He should have died on the ground with her, or just never woken up.

Swallowing a lump in his throat, L'thor rose to his feet and moved over to an alcove in the wall, which contained a number of bottles? "Drink?" he asked Veyes as he reached for cups, clearing his throat to make his voice a bit less choked up. "Feel free to ask anything else you want," he added, still facing the wall. "I feel like I need to talk, but don't really know what to talk about."

Veyes listened to the accounting having never asked what had happen in detail before but for him it was quite easy for his mind to imagine the series of events like horrifying story book. He knew that it was best for L'thor to pull these things out of the dark space in his closet they had to be let go of one step at a time.

He knew that losing a dragon was a mind numbing...no mind warping experience from everything that he had been told. He couldn't imagine what it might be like to lose your other half and it was easy to see why L'thor suffered so much back then. He knew dragons took priority over everything in a riders life even lovers but it must have been distinctly apparent for one brief moment when D'los was awake. He had a feeling that seeing half of a man was far greater loss than death itself.

"Yes, a drink would be nice." he answered as he tried to formulate another question to keep this conversation going. He hesitated for a moment while L'thor picked the drinks wondering what to ask.

Veyes had to ponder what D'los would have wanted L'thor to remember. If only the Ghost could tell him what to say. How would he have brought L'thor his senses about all this? D'los might have given L'thor a sound swat maybe? Or maybe he was too shy for that? Maybe he would have given him a warning with just a glance alone? Or while pressed in a passionate kiss where both parties were unguarded? His imagination wasn't being much help at the moment...obviously. He couldn't do any of those things and have them come across the right way. Considering the man had dwelled so long on half a man...and the day of D'los death. Maybe bringing out the joy of what they shared would be a much better way to start healing open wound.

"Mm....so, how did you both meet?"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 17, 2009 4:27 pm

"Well, let's see..." L'thor collected his composure and returned to the chairs with bottle and cups. Sitting down, he took the small knife he wore at his belt and pulled out the cork. "We met first as candidates, but we didn't speak much back then," he said as he poured out two cups of the fruity red wine and handed one to Veyes. "I was preoccupied with being an impetuous youth, and he was too shy to speak up to anyone. I suppose you could say we really met on the sands. In Raith's clutch, she was the third to hatch and hurried straight over to me. I got her fed and everything, then we stayed to watch the rest. Fairly near to the end, Allieth hatched and went to D'los. They came over to get food, and all four of us just sort of hit it off."

Smiling faintly, L'thor sipped at his wine and lent back in his chair. It was good to have a drink in his hand, he felt steadier for it, partially for the calming effects of the wine, and partially for having something to do with his hands; fiddling with them in his lap had been awkward. "We took neighboring bunks in the dorm, and from then on we were pretty well inseparable. The attraction was immediate, but obviously we couldn't act on it until our girls were old enough to understand... I suppose that was a good thing, he wouldn't have taken blatant advances well from somebody he didn't know well; by the time the girls were mature enough he was comfortable with me and," L'thor gestured vaguely with his cup, "things happened. Oh, of course, during that time D'los was getting to know V'kain too; he'd Impressed at the clutch before us, and gave us all sorts of useful advice. Mmm, yes, anyway; that would be how we met." He'd gone off on a bit of a tangent he supposed, but not an irrelevant one; Veyes seemed to want to know about his former weyrmate, and though in places it was painful he was happy to tell.

Veyes smiled a bit as L'thor spoke about the past. He wouldn't tell L'thor that at times he had been a shy kid as well at least when he was younger. Coming to the Weyr changed that quite a bit in him especially with the over crowding in Ista. The tale was rather sweet and he wondered if Raith was listening and maybe remembering such fine times. Veyes didn't believe that dragons couldn't remember events. He just felt they probably didn't concern themselves with it as much as men. He wasn't a scholar on the matter but he always felt that Raith would remember the important parts of him.

He could practically see the 4 of them together with the way L'thor told the story. Of course, his imagination filled in all the gaps and they could have almost been alive in his head. "Sounds like it would have been rough if you were that attracted." he said with a smile hoping to keep the mood lighter not for himself but for L'thor. "What was his Green like? Did she have similar quirks that Raith had? I've noticed clutchmates sometimes are very close...or rivals."

Behind the attentive gaze, his mind remained focused on the task at hand. He tried to remain consistent and grounded with his voice; be more of an ear than the heart that beat within. Although that was very difficult for a young man, whose thoughts sometimes shifted like sand in the wind. L'thor and D'los sounded like a warm happy couple and that part should be cherished rather than the leavings of D'los' last days. Maybe L'thor would see that as they talked through the questions he asked...hopefully so. D'los deserved a better place within L'thor's memories than the cage he had been confined to.

"Ah so V'kain knew the both of you. I see." he said and maybe realized in a small way why he rarely saw the man when he was at Ista. There was one time he had seen him. A very short moment and then he was gone. It was almost as if Veyes could never catch the man at home. Maybe that reason hadn't been work...or otherwise. Maybe the Shadow was an uncanny reminder. That would make sense. "Is that why he avoided me?" he asked accidentally. It came out as more of a revelation than a full question.

He took a slow drink of the red wine to fill the space of time. The warm liquid taking the edge off his own nerves. This was the second time he had a drink after the incident at the Lake...The time prior was at the beach with L'thor that one night he confessed. He wasn't sure wine had good memories attached to it for him anymore. Seemed like every time he had a glass something awful happened. But he wouldn't express this thought out loud even if the notion gave him an uncomfortable feeling.
