Today was a good day, and Euphemia Argyros was glad.

Everything was back to normal between her and her best friend, Arlet Jahar. This event alone was a cause for celebration, and what better way to do that than by watching a movie? Watching movies together was a favorite pastime of the two girls, and for good reason. It was a time when the two of them could just relax, get comfortable, and snuggle together. To keep things interesting, the movie genres varied. One day they would watch a sappy romance, and then another they'd put in a gory slasher film. Today, however, Euphemia was in the mood for some action, so she pulled out her DVD of Paranormal Activity. When Arlet arrived, hopefully she wouldn't object to the movie choice, but she probably wouldn't. The belly-dancer enjoyed all kinds of films, and this one would probably be up her ally. She was a tomboy, after all.

Once she had the movie picked out, Euphemia busied herself with other things. Her room, although it wasn't messy, was a bit cluttered from her last closet sweep. One by one, the potter made she picked up all the clothes she had taken out, folded them neatly, and put them into their corresponding labeled bags. These would be going to the local homeless shelter next time she was off the school grounds. Euphemia then moved on to refreshments after that, grabbing a bag of popcorn and placing it into the microwave she had bought for herself. Popcorn was always a must when watching a movie.

As she waited for the popcorn to pop, the girl's eyes fell on an odd plant that she had placed upon her desk. Euphemia had just recently noticed it the other day - though where the plant came from or who gave it to her was anyone's guess. Regardless of how it had gotten in her room, she made a mental note to get rid of it. The plant was an ugly thing: withered and brown. The pot it was in didn't help matters, either. What was it with people and sticking to the generic flower pots? Couldn't they spice things up a big by giving them a different design? There was no way she was keeping that flower; that much she was certain of. The last thing she had time for taking care of an ugly little blossom that was probably going to die anyway. She had better things to do: working on her pottery, volunteering at the human society, visiting the elderly and feeding the homeless.

Oh, and watching the movie with Arlet, of course. She couldn't forget about that.

Arlet Jahar flashed dazzling ivory rows of teeth at the mirror, and her reflection obediently did the same. It was a rare occasion, and for the first time in months, Arlet straightened her hair into a prim bob, and actually put some effort into her attire. Placed on her head, was a simple black headband, and upon further inspection, glistening beads could be seen. Underneath her faux leather jacket that fit perfectly, was a simple form-fitting raven tee. Below, she wore an uncharacteristically feminine skirt, paired with onyx leggings, and her favorite part, were the heeled booties. It was true, Arlet had went all-out and bought the entire outfit just yesterday. If she wanted to impress Euphemia, she'd have to try. It would be the first day they'd actually get to spend some real time together since their making-up. Arlet wanted to show her friend that she was sincerely apologetic, and the second reason, was rather obnoxious, that she would make a much better partner then that game-freak. Adding the last touch of plum mascara and lip-gloss, she smiled at herself and was out the door.

As they were in the same house, Ebola, Euphemia's room was barely a 3o-second walk. However, as Arlet was extra nervous, the travel took approximately five minutes for the girl to walk such a short length. From inside the room, the soothing sound of popcorn popping could be heard. At last, she knocked on the door, placing a gentle smile on her face. As the door creaked open, Arlet inquired, "So, what movie are we watching tonight?" in a playful tone.

"Paranormal Activity," Euphemia explained, raising one hand to point at the DVD case on her dresser while using the other to open up the door to the microwave. The popcorn had just finished by the time her friend arrived, and she reached inside slowly to take out the bag. It was hot, so Effie had grabbed it by the corner as carefully as she could. Burning herself from a bag of popcorn would totally be the most ungraceful thing she had done in a while, and that was not a way she wanted to embarrass herself. Especially not in front of Arlet. God...she would never live that down.

With the popcorn safely in a large purple bowl, Effie was now finally able to look up at her friend properly. Oh, boy, did she look gorgeous. A smile tugged at Euphemia's lips as she examined her friend's outfit, allowing her eyes to trail over every little detail. If Arlet wanted to make an impression, she had accomplished her mission. The potter was thoroughly impressed, and she gave her companion a satisfied nod. "You look good, Arlet; I love the outfit." She then motioned to a plush couch that she had set up in her room in front of the tv. "Have a seat, hun, and we can get this movie started. I hear it's scary, so it's going to be good."

Paranormal Activity? Holy crap! The genre of horror was truly outstanding. It always gave girls the excuses to jump into their partners' arms, and their partner to reassuringly hug them. Well, Arlet was getting ahead of herself. This was exactly what the belly-dancer wanted to do though, as she saw Euphemia carefully holding the hot popcorn bag. She was so fragile, so child-like, it was only natural for one to have the want to protect-her. Arlet almost fell in love with Euphemia all over again. Finally setting the bowl onto the table, Arlet defiantly made eye-contact with Euphemia as the lavender set of eyes critiqued her outfit. You look good, Arlet; I love the outfit." Phew! She let out a sigh of relief. The effort had truly been worth it. "Have a seat, hun, and we can get this movie started. I hear it's scary, so it's going to be good." Arlet walked rather stiffly towards the couch. It had been the first time in a while since her last visit in Euphemia's room, and she felt like a tourist, though the room was small. "Well, you know how much I love scary movies."

With that, Arlet stretched out her right arm to gain control of the remote control, and the movie began to play. It was the usual horror movie, the typical eeriness, and beside her, Arlet realized Euphemia had a hundred percent of her concentration on the movie. On the other hand, Arlet barely understood the plot of the film. She was far too much occupied by just staring at the perfection of Euphemia. From the natural, soft, waves, of her brunette hair, to the mole under her left eye, Arlet wanted to take in every small speck of Euphemia. With a yawn, Arlet made her move. Stretching her arm casually, she gradually pulled it down towards Euphemia's neck, pulling the girl closer to her. It was true, the movie was merely an excuse for Arlet.

"Well, you know how much I love scary movies."

Boy, did she ever. If there was any genre of movie that Arlet loved most, it would probably be horror. Why that was, Effie had no clue. Horror movies were alright and everything - she could give Arlet that - but they weren't amazing. The potter actually recalled being frightened by them more often than not after watching them. Paranoia and anxiety always plagued her after seeing a horror film, not to mention the nightmares that followed. Oh, the joy she felt at the prospects of that happening to her again. And yet...this was for Arlet, wasn't it? She could deal with it for one more time.

When Arlet pulled her closer to her, Effie couldn't help but smile. Days like this were ones she loved. There they were, just the two of them, cuddling together and enjoying a movie. Euphemia couldn't help but feel extremely content in Arlet's arms. They were safe, they were warm, and they were welcoming. Actually, maybe she was a little too comfortable, for after just a moment or two, Euphemia had drifted off into a deep slumber.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2009 4:50 pm

Arlet slowly let out a relaxed breath when Euphemia only responded with a docile grin. It was incredibly peaceful, and though the movie was boisterous, Arlet blocked unwanted sounds out, and tilted her head towards Euphemia, to get a better look. When she did, Arlet was pleasantly surprised to see the girl in the midst of a sweet reverie. Giggling girlishly to herself, Arlet set up a nearby cushion as a pillow for Euphemia, got off the couch herself, and sat on the floor, as she positioned her friend in a position that was hopefully comfortable for the girl. Almost as if petting a dog, Arlet slowly repeated the action of smoothening out Euphemia's goddess-like hair, as if to coax her into a deeper sleep. Instead, it had the opposite reaction, and Arlet fell asleep, right hand still on Euphemia's hair, left hand desperately clutching her friend's hand. Sweet dreams, girls.

It had been a long day.

A full schedule of classes, pottery to get done, and a visit to the homeless shelter - Euphemia was exhausted. In a haze of exhaustion, the girl managed to stumble home from the shelter. Every muscle, every bone in her body ached with fatigue. Her eyelids felt heavy, as if they were ready to close at any moment. She wanted to sleep. The thought of the soft, plush bed in her room seemed to beckon to her. It was calling her name. Fatigue wasn't the only thing she felt, though; Euphemia was hungry. No...not just hungry. She was starving.

She had felt hunger before, that was no big deal. But this? Never before had she felt a hunger like this. It was different this time: more gnawing, more dire. The desire to eat this time felt more animalistic than anything, as if she were a wolf stalking its pray. What had gotten into her? This wasn't like Euphemia. It wasn't like her at all. Yet, regardless of that, she couldn't help it. These desires - no, this pain to feed was driving her mad. It was driving her insane. If she didn't get something into her belly soon, then she would shrivel up and die. She could feel it. And that was when she saw it: someone in the hallway that could perhaps give her a little respite.

Arlet.

God, she looked delicious. She was just wearing the typical Barren Pines uniform, but that didn't matter. The girl looked (and smelled) delectable, regardless. It was all Euphemia could do to keep from pouncing on her unsuspecting friend right then and there. But, no. She had to pace herself - she had to be patient. No quick movements, and no sudden outbursts. All that would do was scare her friend a way, and she couldn't have that now, could she? No...if that happened, then she would have nothing to eat.

"Arlet," the potter found herself saying, "I've missed you so much."

The next thing her friend knew, Euphemia's arms were around her. She had pulled the belly-dancer into a warm, loving embrace. This act of love wasn't so strange, was it? Friends hugged each other all the time. Right! It was perfectly natural for Effie to hug Arlet as she did. Actually, the hug was almost comforting. How long had Arlet been waiting for her best friend to embrace her like this again? Perhaps things were starting to look up for her? Maybe Effie had finally broken up with that jerk. Just as these thoughts came to mind, however, something in the hug had changed.

Euphemia's grip had tightened around her friend.

There! She finally had her at last. Tightening her grip, an eerily malicious smirk spread across Euphemia's face. She had done it! There was no way for Arlet to escape now, no matter how much she tried. Resistance, as they so often quoted in the movies, was futile. It was only after her grasp had tightened that the poor girl realized what was going on. There would be no escape for Arlet. Not now. Effie had her in her clutches, just like she had planned.

Panic had set in with Arlet, and that just made it all the better. The hunger the potter was experiencing was so bad, she could taste her companions fear. Taste it, and relish in it, for it just made the experience that much better. If Arlet was smart and didn't struggle, then it would all be over quickly. She wouldn't need to worry anymore. Euphemia would be quick, and the ordeal would be relatively painless. Or at least, that was what she wanted her to believe.

Without even giving her a moment's warning, Euphemia had went in to deliver her final move. The girl's mouth opened to reveal two rows of teeth - not normal, dull and blunt teeth like humans had in every day life - but sharp and jagged ones. Ones that could rip, and ones that could tear. The kind just perfect for sinking into flesh. And that was what she did. What had gone from a gentle hug one moment had turned into a scene of carnage. Jagged teeth sunk into the helpless belly-dancer's flesh, only to rip away a chunk of the girl's neck. Mmm...flesh, it tasted so good. To top it all off, the warm, dark red blood that seeped from the wound tasted even better. Oh, she could just drain Arlet dry.

In fact - Euphemia was going to do just that. Drain her friend dry and then feast on her flesh and bones.

Maybe then this blasted hunger would subside.

Now finished chewing the piece of meat she had torn off of Arlet's neck, Effie swallowed and then smiled. It was time to finish the job.

--

With a sharp, quiet gasp, Euphemia found herself bolting awake.

What had just happened? Violet orbs wide with fear and panic, the girl found herself scouring her bedroom frantically. Tiny droplets of sweat and formed on her forehead, and not the warm kind either. It was a cold sweat, clamy and uncomfortable. Her breath came out in short, ragged bursts: Euphemia was panting. That dream...it had really been that bad, hadn't it? Shivering with fright, it was obvious that the nightmare had shaken her, and it was all she could do to keep from breaking down in tears. As she tried to recall the events in of her dream, one person in particular popped into her mind: Arlet.

Good God, was she okay?! Oh, please - let her be okay!

Just as she was about to stumble and fall off of the couch, Effie caught herself. There, sitting just below her, was her best friend. Arlet was there with her hand wrapped around the potter's safe and sound. Instinctively, the Greek teen let out a sigh of relief. Arlet was okay. Thank God, Arlet was okay.

"Kyrie eleēson," Effie found herself whispering out loud, not caring if anyone else heard her speak in her native tongue. Lord have mercy.

(NOTE: YOUR ACTIONS WILL DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT YOU LIVE OR DIE IN THIS ROLEPLAY. YOU ARE NOT NECESSARILY FATED TO DIE JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A SUDDEN DEATH. IT WILL ALL DEPEND ON WHAT COURSE OF ACTION YOUR CHARACTER DECIDES UPON.)

Euphemia only briefly found herself awake, but with all being well, she was soon drifting off again.

When the two girls awoke again, they were not in Euphemia's room. They were not in any room they had ever seen before. A speaker crackled to life above them.

"Good morning, and welcome to today's experiment! Please do not be alarmed - that is, unless you do not follow our instructions."

The sound cut out for a few minutes. Arlet and Euphemia would have had time to survey their surroundings. They were each lying on a cold tile floor in the corner of a small white room. However, the square shape of the room was cut into by a makeshift wall with a small hole in the middle a little below eye height, and just large enough for someone to reach both hands through but not much else. This additional wall separated both girls from one another - they could look through the hole to see each other, and could certainly hear each other, but a wall is a wall. All the walls in the room, original and new, seemed smooth and impassable, which could not possibly be true - they had to get INTO this room somehow, after all. There was a scratching and chittering sound coming from the opposite corner of whichever one each girl was lying in. All that could be seen was a mesh grate and a seething movement as black as the shadows inside.

Oh, and each girl had their hand around a silenced gun, safety off. Somehow - was it all the movies the two girls had seen? - they had an innate knowledge of how to point and fire the weapon. But it didn't do to dwell on it.

The speaker returned again, the voice formal. "Before we begin, please state one animal, one vegetable, and one mineral."

While one crimson eye lazily opened itself, the other remained closed, refusing to move. What Arlet Jahar expected to see, was the serene expression on Euphemia's face. However, what she saw, was something that even in her most lunatic-like moments, could ever come up with. Alarmed, the other eye shot open, as a sadistic voice introduced itself. "Good morning, and welcome to today's experiment! Please do not be alarmed - that is, unless you do not follow our instructions." "What the ********?!" Arlet mumbled to herself. A ******** experiment? She didn't sign up for this...Did Euphemia? Instructions? Arlet shivered, as the words repeated itself in the silence. Hold up. Don't panic, don't panic, don't panic, she echoed in her mind. Arlet was Miss Calm in situations such as these. She'd never been in such a horror-movie-like crisis, but surely, there'd be an explanation, she just had to take in the details, think about what kind of insane-asylum patient could be doing this.

Arlet took in her surroundings. Everything was of a pure white. No. Take that back. This couldn't be called pure. It was the eerie kind of white. Like the shade of the sheets dead people are placed on. A long-lasting shiver came upon the belly-dancer once again. The room was divided into halves by a thin wall. In that wall, was a small slit, that would allow a mere pair of hands to touch each other. Wait. What was on the other side of the wall? Euphemia! The past minute or two, made Arlet feel like she was on the brink of death. But the possibility that her dear friend was safe, loaded heaps of courage onto her plate of confidence. With a confident smile, she shouted, "Euphemia!" The moment of happiness was instantly shattered when the desperation in her voice merely echoed. <******** my life, she thought. Karma was SUCH a b***h.

It was then that the sound was heard. It was barely inaudible, coming from the opposite side of the room, underneath what seemed to be a metal grate. It sounded like a disease-infested monster of the sort. Arlet made a wild guess, based on all the horror movies she'd seen in her lifetime. A mutant? Immediately, her whole body tensed. She had to think clearly! Nervously, she ran one hand through her hair, and brought the other to bite on. Instead, she bit on something cold. What the hell?! Looking down at her tan hand, Arlet realized it was grasping a gun. A ******** gun. Okay. So what did this sadistic b*****d want her to do? Shoot the damn thing underneath her? Arlet put on her most bad-a** facade up and pointed the gun towards the direction of the grate, feeling an incredibly natural murderous intent. Just as she felt like she wanted to pull the trigger, the anonymous voice returned.

"Before we begin, please state one animal, one vegetable, and one mineral." Arlet scoffed. Heck. She wasn't even scared any more. Instead, she persuaded herself to think that she was a protagonist in a movie. It would all be over soon. The camera-men would assure her of her safety, Euphemia would be in her arms, and she would be belly-dancing. But, in present time, the reality wasn't so sweet. All she knew, was that she'd have to respond, or she'd have to "be alarmed." She rummaged through her knowledge of animals, vegetables, and minerals. What would be the least dangerous? Aha! Television most certainly helped. Spongebob Squarepants! That dumb-a** Patrick, the Starfish! He wasn't dangerous, was he? As for vegetables...which could inflict the least damage? A flower! Referring to a book she had read as a child, she thought Chrysanthemum. What could a flower do? As for the mineral, she could only think of one...Hematite.

"I don't know who you are, but I'll answer. Starfish, Chrysanthemums, and Hematite. I hope you're happy." Arlet spat, with a snide smirk replacing her usual slight grin.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2009 7:31 pm

What was going on?

One moment she was awake, having just woken up from a nightmare, and then she was out again.

After what seemed like ages, Euphemia finally stirred from her second slumber. She sat up slowly, groggily rubbing her eyes. What happened. When she blinked, a harsh white light filled her eyes. It was blinding. Where was she? She certainly wasn't in her room anymore. Her room wasn't this white. There was barely any white in there at all. No...when her eyes finally focused, Euphemia noticed that she was somewhere else entirely. It was some sort of room. A room like....like something she had seen straight out of one of the horror movies she watched so many times with Arlet.

"Good morning, and welcome to today's experiment! Please do not be alarmed - that is, unless you do not follow our instructions."

An experiment?

Wait -- what?! Euphemia hadn't signed up for an experiment of any sort. Not that she could remember, anyway. Had Arlet? No, she couldn't have. An experiment was the last thing her friend would willingly sign up for. This whole thing...it had to be a joke, right? Some sort of twisted game like they would try to pull straight out of a Saw movie. It couldn't be real. It just couldn't. Hell, the two of them were just students after all. Stuff like this never happened to high school kids!

A wave of emotions seemed to wash over the girl next. It was cold, and she was frightened. Frightened and panicked all at once. How could this have happened to her? Was she going to die? Oh, God! What if she was going to die! No. No - she couldn't. There was still so many things she still had left to do: go to college, get married, raise a family. All of these things would never happen if she ended up not making it through this sick and twisted scenario.

"Euphemia!"

The potter jumped when she heard her name called. Holy s**t, that startled her! Placing a hand on her chest and after taking a few deep breaths did Euphemia recognize who was speaking to her. It was Arlet! She was okay, and she was nearby. Right on the other side of the wall, by the sound of things. Mustering up all the courage she had, Effie turned and look toward the wall. "Arlet," she called out, trying her hardest to fight back the tears, "Arlet, I'm scared." It figures. There was no way she'd be the calm one in this sort of situation. She fit into the role of the panicky crying girl fearing for her life all too well.

After calling out to her friend, the girl noticed two things that were sure to be important in a matter of minutes. One - that she was holding on to a gun. At the sight of her hand wrapped around it, Euphemia gave a little jump. Never in her life before had she held a gun, but now? Now it seemed all-too familiar. What was she doing with something like this, and why on earth would she need it? Two - a noise was resonating out from within a grate, and it sounded none too friendly. What the hell -- ...what the hell was that? Was the person in charge of this experiment going to release some sort of hideous, deformed, half-crazed creature on them?! Probably. That seemed right up their line.

"Before we begin, please state one animal, one vegetable, and one mineral."

Animal, vegetable, mineral? Huh?

Euphemia's mind was fuzzy. She could barely comprehend her situation, let alone think about what sort of things to tell this strange man. Why did it have to be something like that? Why couldn't they just say their names? That would have been a whole lot easier. Bringing a hand to rest on her forehead, Euphemia brought her knees to her chest and stared up at the ceiling to look for the source of the noise. There had to be some sort of speaker around there right? Where else could the noise come from?

After a few moments of silence, she found her voice, and quietly mumbled out the three things the man had asked for: "Sponge, pea, and agate." With any luck, the frightened girl prayed, this horrible nightmare would all be over soon.

"Excellent - you are both awake." The voice on the speaker was distorted by static. "Ah-ah-ah, Miss Jahar. You wouldn't want to waste your ammunition so soon - you've only got four shots each."

"You may have noticed you have each been armed with a gun. These are very important to your survival today. They are silenced - the shot you fire will not make a noise, but what you shoot at can... for instance, your friend on the other side of the wall. Your aim does not have to be perfect, because if you can't shoot to kill, you can still shoot to get a reaction out of your target. You may also take your own life, if you'd like to save your friend."

"Behind the grates are a special breed of rat, one never seen before outside of Barren Pines. They have no eyes, and rely entirely on sound to seek their next meal. Any creature unfortunate enough to make a loud noise around these rats will find themselves completely drained of blood in a matter of minutes. So long as there's quiet, though, they're perfectly harmless. Walking around won't set them off if you don't step on anything. We advise you not to speak once they are released, so don't plan on planning anything together. Your decisions will have to be made silently."

"The aim of this experiment is simply to see how badly each of you wishes to live. And we will reward effort with life. If nothing happens in the allotted time, an alarm will sound. It is a very loud alarm. And the rats will not like it at all."

There was a dangerous pause. The voice picked up again, pleasant as ever. "You have five minutes to decide who will live. Have a nice day!"

The PA cut off. In the corners of the room, the grates were being raised, and out poured a sea of large black rats skittering on the tile floor. They did not have eyes. But they had mouths. Oh, they had mouths. The long thin teeth were like white needles, and massive tongues lolled from their mouths when they opened them. They practically blanketed the floor of the room, and some even took to climbing up Arlet and Euphemia. But they didn't attack... yet.

Her eyes widened with pure joy as Euphemia's panic-struck voice was heard from the other side of the cursed wall. Blissful, Arlet opened her now-chapped lips to reply with relief, but then the voice entered the scene once again. She scowled with disgust at the amusement in the mans' voice. Goddamn. What kind of screwed up human being was he? Though she thought this, it was also true that she absorbed in every letter of information. As the sadist blurted out their current situation, Arlet made a mental list of the key points.
☠ I've ******** four bullets in my gun.
☠ The gun is apparently silenced. Not a single sound will come out if I shoot...at whatever.
☠ I can shoot myself to save Euphemia.
☠ Beneath this room, there are a rabid species of blind rats, who only have the ability to hear. Whatever makes a sound, will simply die. I SHOULD NOT TALK. However, I may walk around.
☠ I have to do SOMETHING. Otherwise, the alarm will ring within five minutes, and I'll die anyways.

So...what now? Should she shoot herself? Arlet loved Euphemia, at times, more then her family combined. As long as Euphemia lived...it would be okay, right? But could one so selflessly surrender their life to another? The two girls were a whole when together, but if one were to die...Arlet cringed at the horrible thought. No. Holy crap. Wait. Arlet Jahar was not going to ******** die from suicide. If she was going to go down, her death would be full of epic win. Seriously. She'd make it out of this somehow, with Euphemia's hand in hers. It was then that the...monsters came out, rushing to escape from their prison. There were simply dozens, scattered about the room, thirsty for prey. Blind, they were. The creatures were simply grotesque. From their long, overgrown, fur, with hints of fresh blood here and there. Their teeth, a moldy yellow, crooked and incredibly lengthy. Their tails, long, slithery, followed them loyally like a minion. None of these features made Arlet want to puke as much as the tongue. It lolled about their body indolently, with an infinite amount of saliva leaving trails, but most of all, it was hungry. As three curious rodents crept about her body, Arlet almost omitted a gasp, but covered her lips with her shivering hand just in time. Holy crap. Five minutes. Four bullets. Three rats on her. Two lives. One decision.

And what were her choices? If she shot at one of the rats, would it make a final cry of death? Would the other alien-rodents attack it for blood, or would she be attacked? Should she shoot herself? What would happen then? Was it confirmed that Euphemia would live? Whoever was controlling this operation, could not be trusted. What to do, what to do!
The clock was ticking.

Rats. Why the hell did it have to be rats?!

The mice dashed their way out of the grate, and without making any attempt to hide her displeasure, Euphemia's face contorted in disgust. These creatures...they were horrendous. Horrendous, and probably plagued with who the hell knew what in terms of diseases and bacteria. Fortunately, she was calm enough to remain silent. Stay calm. Breathe evenly. Stay calm. Breathe evenly. It helped to say this personal mantra over and over again in her head, especially when the mutated rodents began to scurry all over her. That alone would have been enough to make her scream, but she fought back the urge. There would be no way she'd be doing that this time.

"Have a nice day!"

A nice day?! Ha! How cliche of whoever was running this so-called experiment to say that. It was only obvious that they wouldn't have a nice day: neither Euphemia nor Arlet. How could they? Scourges of hybrid mice that looked as if they came out of one of Lucas' freaky video games were threatening to drain their bodies dry of blood. This was not going to end well; that much, she could already tell. But what to do? What could the two of them do about the predicament they were in? Talking wouldn't work -- the rats would hear and then move in for the kill. Shooting each other wouldn't work, either. Euphemia could never shoot her best friend. Maybe, if it came down to it, she would just off herself in the end, but she would have to see. Everything would be determined within the next few minutes. That was all they had, after all. Just a few minutes more.

It was then that a thought had occured to her: the gun! She could use the gun!

The guns, they were on silent, right? As she held the weapon in her hand, Euphemia brought it up to her eye level just to make sure. She may have never used a gun before, but she wasn't stupid. The silencer was on, just like he had said. The potter had made sure of that. Once she was sure that the man hadn't been lying about their guns, she raised the barrel up and pointed it at one of the rats in the other corner. If the gun was on silence and she shot at the rat, then the gun itself wouldn't make a noise. The rat, however, would - wouldn't it? It would scream after being shot. All animals did. Then again, there was only one way to test her hypothesis.

Pulling the trigger with a finger, Euphemia didn't even bother to close her eyes as the gun went off. She wanted to watch...wanted to see the reaction that the rat had as soon as it was hit.

The shot was not a sound but a feeling to Euphemia, the recoil of the gun jolting her hand. Silent. Terrifying. The rat she aimed at gave a horrible scream and a lot of blood. There was a wave motion that spread throughout the mass of rats on both sides of the room. Rodent heads were all suddenly pointed at the injured among them, noses moving, mouths opening, teeth glinting. There was surge of black fur diving at the rat who screamed. And in less than a minute, it retreated, leaving Euphemia's target a dry husk of a creature. The other rats had returned to lazing about the room as though nothing had happened. On Arlet's side, some of the rats attempted to scrabble at the divider, but lost interest after a few minutes.

Well, it was a real gun, and those rats really reacted.

The twin grates on both sides of the diagonal wall were still open, makeshift ventilation shafts, large enough for a single person to crawl inside. Rats milled about inside, though there wasn't much of the shaft to be seen from within the room. Knowing the rats came from inside it, it could be a way out. Knowing the rats came from inside it, it could be a deadly trap.

From the other side of the wall, a cry of death was heard. However, Arlet knew the obvious distinction between the shout of a human being...and a monstrous rodent. So, it was clear though communication wasn't possible, Euphemia was alive and fighting to the death well on her own. The rats did cry when shot, and that rat was probably eaten to death, by family. Tears sprung to Arlet's crimson eyes as the rats on her side struggled to get to Euphemia's side. She was simply disgusted. So, what did Arlet do now? With four bullets, killing all of these rats off was simply impossible. She'd have to find a way out of the ******** cell.

It was then she truly realized how stupid she was. The rats! They were coming from somewhere! An entrance that was open! However, Arlet would have to be extremely cautious about it. The decision could lead either to her survival or death. She crept along the sides of the wall, clinging to them like peanut butter to jelly. In a few seconds, she reached the middle wall. The thing was, there were still several rats still curiously crawling about the entrance of the shaft. Carefully, she aimed her gun at the grate. In a split second, she swiftly rushed back to the safety of her corner. What would happen? Was the grate the answer? Could it really all be that easy...?
