Age: 17
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual
Craft: None
Rank: Candidate
History:
In the Real World.. his life has been a part of a Southern hold, his father, a tough farmer and his mother a busy drudge to the Lord Holder's household. For Veyes, there was little opportunity to be anything else but...another lowly farmer. His older brother, had all the luck, and by chance caught the attention of a Masterherder who pressed Veyes' father to let the boy go at an early age to to start learning about Runnerbeasts. His parents were proud of his older brother's accomplishments but Veyes could only feel the pains of jealous each time the subject came up at the dinner table.
Veyes wanted the same opportunity to be like his brother but his father was the salt of the earth and told Veyes to not expect the same luck his brother had and focus on taking over the farm one day. His father told him that the best he could hope for was the local education that most hold children received and the promise of a pretty wife at his side.
His mother was quite similar to Veyes being a dreamer herself on the other hand, hoped that Veyes would find his path in life and encouraged his dreams. It didn't always make for a quiet home life but a normal family for the most part each with their own expectations of the future.
Veyes as he grew up wanted to seek out more for his life beyond the hold. He wanted to see places he had never visited; things that harpers told him about in stories. Adventures into the unknown suited the boy's fancy whether it be as a sailor, dragon rider or even something else. He had plenty of questions for harpers when they arrived as his imagination would fill in with dreams of these new places. Although even as he wanted to seek out these dreams; the means was difficult to come by.
At one point, he saw a dragon rider show up at the hold and noticed the straps on the dragon and got seriously interested in how to make and use a pair. He sketched what they looked like on the dirt and tried to burn the image into his mind. Even later after the dragon had left he wanted to make his own.
Eventually, after gathering scraps of leather over the course of months and an old runner's halter he created his own straps to fit the aged draft runner he used to coral the heard beasts in the mornings. This probably wasn't exactly what dragon straps should be but for Veyes it was an opportunity to dream of the future with a just a bit more reality involved.
It was on one of these occasions when he left early to the pasture to coral the herd beasts that he decided to fly with his 'dragon' - draft beast. He strapped on his riding straps and took the draft out never minding the fact that this wasn't nearly as comfortable as he might have thought.
While out there he had the strangest encounter as he played out is game of 'dragonflight'. A man showed up out of nowhere and started yelling at him about his straps. This man turned out to be L'thor of Green Raith. Veyes yelled back at the man not knowing he was a rider who had seen him from above. It was the most unusual meeting that ever took place.
What Veyes didn't know was that L'thor was grieving over his lost lover D'los. When L'thor passed over head, the man swore he saw D'los on the ground below and had to look uncovering a boy with similar features. It stung L'thor as if by some twist of fate something had decided to mock him.
In this time, Raith at a distance away so as not to scare the draft realized that the boy had potential to impress. But the conversation was a brief argument and Veyes turned on his draft leaving the man behind. Not realizing that the direction he had taken his steed would bring out an injured feline that sought easy prey. As the draft tried to escape, L'thor lost his mind for a moment and thought he would lose D'los all over and doing the most stupid of things tried to attack the feline himself. Raith stepped in immediately killing the feline but not before L'thor had taking some serious injuries. Veyes helped L'thor and with Raith's flight was able to get him to the infirmary.
In the end, Veyes and L'thor developed a mentor/student relationship once Veyes was brought to the Weyr. And their tale progressed from there...from mentor/student to a boy feeling the pangs of his first romantic interests in L'thor. It was such an odd and sad situation for the boy when he confessed to the man and was rejected so quickly. Not long after, L'thor left for High Reaches Weyr leaving Veyes behind under pretense of a better place for Raith to live. What really was going through his head, Veyes did not know, however, under recommendation of his best friend, Conomor, he finally found a way to get himself transfered to High Reaches Weyr. One day, he would have the truth.
Appearance: 5'9" and still growing; he is a muscular tawny boy with already a small six pack from many years of working on the farm. His hair is a rich and dark chestnut brown that flows in waves over his shoulders and down his back kept in place by a tight braid. His eyes are a blue-grey like the sky turning towards a storm with lashes that are long and full.
He used to not care so much about his appearance that is until he met L'thor. He might not have bothered to clean up as often but L'thor was particular about that and soon he developed a liking for long bathes and the moments when L'thor might take a bit of time to brush his locks out while instructing him on dragons. He especially discovered an interest in personal hygiene once the lice hit Ista. Now he maintains himself much better than previously.
Personality: Veyes is a boy with two states of being...the face he shows those in the Hold...an average, quiet, hold boy that works hard for his father...and the face that he shows his mother; the energetic creative creature that has dreams of his future and longs to follow them.
Looking at Veyes is like looking in to the dreamer's imaginative chaos. The eyes of a creative storm waiting to blossom. His potential has not been tapped due to life situations but given a task he will take it on full bore and come up with a solution even if it were one so far fetched that no one could comprehend how he got there.
Sometimes he has been seen as aloof, and that's because he's dreaming on how to become more than what he is or pondering out some solution to problems rather than paying attention to those around him. Although, if he is engaged in an interesting conversation, he becomes fully engaged. It's when he doesn't have much interest that he drifts off.
He works hard because that was what he was taught on the farm, if only so his body can automatically do the chores so his mind can zoom off into his imaginary world where anything is possible.
Veyes is not afraid of challenges and is always filled with ideas to change the world. Because sitting idly by is not the answer! If someone says impossible, Veyes would not believe them. In fact, he might try to prove them wrong. Once Veyes is on a project that he feels important he drives forward with almost an obsessive mind towards the goal.
However being as imaginative as he is, Veyes finds it hard to be grounded. He doesn't understand this flaw, but subconsciously has sought out friends that are more seriously minded to serve as anchors to his visionary world.
Other:
Veyes is an imaginative storyteller and like to entertain with fantastical creations of strange worlds and other places taking people he's meet and placing them into unusual situation of daring adventure.
He is quite creative and will find ways to make/build things he needs for different projects when an acceptable solution is not available. Even if his inventions are odd and pulled solely out of his creative mind...If there's a will there's a way. Even if that way has no logical bearing to it.
Knowledge from Home:
He can cook and do a variety of traditionally woman's work just because there are no other girls on the farm to do the jobs that need to be done so he helps his mother out if she is not back from her job.
Veyes has learned the various skills from a herder/farmer homelife such as animal butchering...and maintaining... How to care for the lands and how to make a living off of it. He has skills in riding and driving a cart/draftrunner beast combination.
Knowledge from Ista:
From his time at Ista Weyr he has learned all the Candidate concepts and has been privated tutored by L'thor of Green Raith in many Weyrling skills in preparation to hopefully impress.
Notes: Veyes was originally a AtWoP character adapted to fit better with the requirements of this shop. His first meeting with L'thor has been also altered to fit better with the shop with Tawny Angel's approval and input.
