I want my music to sound like punk rock but I can't seem to get it that way
Is this a joke?
Hey, now! Just because you don't like punk doesn't mean you need to rag on other people.
To Strike:
If your into newer punk, (Blink-182, for example) try these suggestions out.
A lot of Green Day / Blink melodies are in the major scale. I'd suggest learning it for the lead or intro.
D------------2-4-5
A------2-3-5------
E-3-5-------------
is the major scale from one octave to the next, you can move this up and down the neck as you desire. Play around with that and see if you can come up with something interesting.
Additionally, a nice little (newer) punk chord progression would be the I-II-III-V and variants. In simpler terms, that means this:
G-------7
D-5-7-9-7
A-5-7-9-5
E-3-5-7--
Of course, you'd play each power chord for one or two measures. Try mixing up the rhythm and order for more flavor. Throw in some percussive mutes in between, too.
Naturally, this is assuming you have distortion or overdrive on. Pretty key for newer punk.
As a disclaimer, I'm not exactly a punk aficionado, and barely listen to it. I hope this has helped, regardless.
