The young mare galloped along freely, running with the wind. For as long as she could remember it had always been this way. She had always been left to do whatever she pleased and was always running alone. And she was sick of it. Yes freedom was nice, but what were you supposed to do with it when you were alone? She'd had a mother once, and even a herd. However, her foolish trouble making and her want for freedom had lead her to leave. Who needed anyone else to depend on anyway? She did. Over the past couple of years she had learned what a herd had really meant. It meant shelter, protection, friends, and a family. When she gave up her herd two years ago she had lost all of that. And for what? A little freedom? Well she was sick of it. The well built mare came to a halt as she heard running water. Quickly she perked her ears up and listened, trying to find the direction it came from. Ah! There it was. Imbrium then turned towards the water and slowly made her way down the embankment. Once she reached the water she slowly began to drink her fill. Not even thinking to look and see if anyone else was around. She did have a bad habit of that.

Thanos had taken leave from the herd for a short time. He needed quiet, well as much quiet as he could get with his rats tagging along, to gather his thoughts. It was so hard to think when all the herd members were talking about this and that. He walked off through the grass and trees. The distance from the others helped clear his mind of all their concerns, leaving him alone with his thoughts. He stopped not far from a river to begin the long and arduous process of recovering one of his thoughts. It seemed that just as the first shreds of a memory were coming to him he saw a black mare disappear over the embankment towards the river. "Is she one of ours?" He asked his rats.War looked up from her current spat with Peace and glanced in the direction Thanos was looking. There was nothing there. "Who?" "I don't see anything." Peace responded."Great now he's seeing things!" War exclaimed. "Are we to be his eyes as well?" "We will be whatever he needs us to be. That was our deal." Peace turned his attention back to Thanos. "What did she look like?" Perhaps knowing what the mare looked like would be the key here."She was solid black. Do we have a black mare in the herd?" Thanos replied. He was sure he knew what all the members looked like but with the way his thoughts taunted him some days it was hard to know for sure."We don't have any black mares. Not that I can remember." Peace said."Then we shall put an end to her!" War chirped. "We better check." Thanos said, since Peace wasn't sure. And how bad would it be to lose a herd member so soon. That would certainly show the others he wasn't competent at leading the herd. How odd was it that the rats didnt know for sure. With that Thanos began his way towards the edge of the embankment. Once there he gazed down at the black mare as she drank, seemingly unaware of her surroundings. Her eyes held a slight glow to them, which he found interesting. "Are you sure she isn't one of ours?" He asked his rats. She certainly looked like she might belong."Not one of ours!" War exclaimed loudly. "Put her to death." "We will not kill her. But no, she is not one of ours."

Imbri took one last swallow of the cool water. She had desperately needed that. Perhaps she should follow the river from here on until it came to its end. Yes, that would be good. Then she wouldn't have to worry about finding more water later. First she would need to climb back up the embankment, if she stayed too close to the water she might be more likely to run into predators. The black mare quickly stood upright and turned around to face... well it was the embankment alright but there seemed to be a stallion standing there now. Drat. She really needed to be more careful when she went for water. You would think she'd have learned these things by now, after all she had been on her own plenty long enough.
Well it didn't seem as if she was in any immediate danger. The stallion hadn't attacked her yet and that was always a good sign. Maybe she should say hello? "Hi, umm, I'm Imbruim. Or just Imbri for short." She called up to him. "Who are you?" Well, it wasn't exactly eloquent, but she had gotten her point across and that was really all that mattered in the end. Foolish little words that made your sentences sound sophisticated and pretty were of no use to her.
The mare then made her way backup the bank, being careful not to slip in the mud or get herself too dirty. After just a few moments she stood beside the stallion and took a good look. Oh my! He seemed to be in pretty bad shape. Actually, from the looks of him he shouldn't be alive at all! That was odd, especially since he was alive and apparently well.
"Oh no! Do you need help? Are you okay?" His wounds didn't exactly scare or bother her, but she couldn't just stand back and do nothing if he was hurt. He could be dying for all she knew. In fact he should be dying. He should be dead. Yes, yes, she'd already thought that, she supposed it was just a hard thought to get past.

Thanos gave the mare a strange look when she asked who he was. Ah so she isn't part of the herd, he thought. Or perhaps a very forgetful mare. No that couldn't be the case, from what he vaguely remembered the others in the herd seemed to have their thoughts and wits about them. Well this made thing awkward, he had no idea how to interact with horses outside the herd. "I am...Thanos." He replied as she came up to the top of the embankment where he stood.
"Kill! Kill! Kill!" War chirped in as happy as tone as she could muster. "Quiet you!" Let them talk." Peace stated firmly. Not wanting to be interupted War jumped on Peace and began fighting her brother. The two rats squeaked and thrashed about in Thanos' mane.
Well now it was just getting out of hand, he thought. He wanted to turn and return to the herd when the mare suddenly asked him if he was okay. Need help, he thought, why would I need help. Then he realized she was looking at his falling apart body. Ah yes that, obviously it didn't look good. "No I am fine." He replied. "That's nothing." His half missing tail flicked slightly as he spoke. Why did he have to explain his odd looks. Was it that odd for him to look like this? Well the answer was obvious, but it had been so long since he looked like a normal horse that he believed that this was what normal was.

Imbrium gave the decaying stallion an odd look. She hadn't ever seen anyone alive with such horrid wounds but she shrugged. If he said he was okay then he must be. As it was he was still walking and talking. There were still things int his world that she didn't understand and this was just one of those. The black mare could accept that and would. Besides, arguing about it wouldn't do her any good either. Actually he was kind of handsome, once you got over the bits that seemed to be missing.
Was she going mad? It was possible, but for some reason she found herself strangely attracted to this creature, this stallion. She even felt a need to make him feel better. The look on his face, in his eyes, he seemed so lost to her. Imbrium quickly shook her head trying to rid herself of the odd thoughts that clung to her. And no matter how hard she shook they stayed. What she was feeling was a curious sensation. She had felt it before, just after she had left her herd and ran into a lone stallion. The stallion had shown no interest and had immediately left her alone once more. Why should this time be any different.
"Well, if you're sure." She said. Then quickly moved on to a different subject. "Where do you come from? You must have a home or family somewhere." Imbri had been so lonely for so long that she hoped she could at least share a little conversation with the stallion before he left her alone again.

Thanos studied her carefully as she shook her head, it almost brought a smile to him. It was like she was trying to sort out what was happening and not wanting to accept it. "I'm sure." He said smoothly as one of his ears flicked slightly. Oh that was a question he wasn't sure if he should answer, where he came from. That would be well probably too much for the mare to take. "I came from...uh..." He had to think fast. "Over there." He motioned with his head towards the mountain that deep within contained the barrier to Hell. "No, no family. Just my herd."
"She must be a drifter. Most mares choose herd life." Peace said quietly. "Drifters are no good scum!" War yelled. "You like scum." Peace retorted. Damn, she thought, that was true. "Then she can't be a drifter, because I don't like her." "Of course you don't."
Thanos had never been in a situation like this. He didn't like normal horses. They disgusted him, much like he was sure to disgust them. And yet this mare, she seemed different. She didn't seem to care much that he was falling apart and broken. No she seemed almost intrigued by it. How odd. "And you, where is your family?" He asked her, he would have said more but he couldn't seem to find the right words. He knew what he wanted to say, but the words just wouldn't come out.

Imbrium listened quietly as the stallion talked. Strangely her heart seemed to ache for him. She wanted to comfort him, but why? Why on earth would she want to do such a thing for a stallion she had never met? He seemed so lonely and confused, she didn't know why he was, just that he seemed to be. Oh goodness. What was with all these little thoughts she was having? You'd think she was a young filly who was love struck. Okay well she wasn't a filly in any case.
"No family? That must get lonesome." No wonder he seemed so.. so lonely? Sure he had a herd but with no family what good was that? If he didn't consider his herd family he must feel relatively isolated. Her herd was never really family, she hadn't ever felt welcome so she had left.
"My family is two years in my past. Wherever they are now I care not. They cared nothing for me as I care nothing for them." It was a cold and rather harsh statement but it was true. She had felt an outsider, an unwanted foal that even her mother had barely loved. Trouble. She had been trouble, almost an ill omen so they had cast her aside. Finally driving her out. Oh she had left on her own, but only because they had pushed her aside one too many times. There was no family if there was no love.

He cocked an ear at her. "Lonely? No, it's not lonely." At least he didn't think it was lonely. Was he ever truly alone. War and Peace were constant companions that never left him. It was hard to be alone. Did he want to be alone? Not really, at least he didn't think he wanted to be. He looked at the mare as she spoke. His expression was hard to read, missing half your face did have it's downsides every now and then. But had he had his old face back he would have an almost amused look on it.
"Hatred! Loneliness! Death!" War ran up Thanos' mane while nattering these things. She perched on top of his head, nestled between his ears looking at the mare. "She hates." "I suppose you like her now?" Peace asked. "She is more likable." Peace shook his head. War was always changing her mind at the first sign of hatred in another.
"Families are not always happy places." He replied to her. Was his all that different? His old family, well it wasn't the best, but there were times when even he was glad they were around. He looked at the mare and then glanced out among the trees and meadows, why did he feel so...different around her. Was this a part of his delusions? Was she even truly there? Perhaps this was all a dream. Yes that would explain it. It had to be a dream, why else would the mare still be around, she should have run off in terror at the first sight of him. "Are you just passing through?" He asked, not wanting to look at her again. Everything he did so that odd, and yet somehow familiar, feeling came to him. What was it? He knew it from his past but damn it just wouldn't come clear to him.
"She should join us." Peace said from under the cover of Thanos' mane. "Are you mad? She can't join us! She is alive!." "And he is not?" "That is different."
"Quiet." Thanos said sharply to his rats. Almost instantly he realized Imbri might wonder what he was talking about. He thought fast, well as fast as his brain could go. "It sure is quiet here." There that was a good recovery. He was proud of himself.

The mare listened as Thanos talked. Well, maybe he wasn't lonely. She may have just read him wrong. Without others near her any more she was probably a bit off now. She did have to agree with what he said next though.
"You're right," She bobbed her head in agreement, letting her long mane dance with the movement as she did so. "They aren't always happy places. At least not for me..." She trailed off then, lost in memories.
It had been her eyes. The second she had been born they had branded her as different. Why her eyes were the way the were was still unknown of her, she had received no explanation, and now she didn't really care. Perhaps that was why she wasn't too puzzled by the stallion that stood before her, yes he was interesting to say the least and it didn't seem possible, but she had her own oddities. Her herds own ill omen. Even her own mother had shunned her in the end. Honestly, with so much hate you'd have thought she'd have left before she did.
Imbrium was snapped out of her thoughts when Thanos said quiet. What an odd way of saying it. She was a little puzzled but since he didn't quite seem entirely there she didn't question it.
"Yes, it is quiet isn't it?" She answered him. "Although that's not really different for me. It's usually always quiet where I go." It was a bit of a lonely statement but it was the truth.

Thanos bobbed his head slightly as she spoke, not out of agreement, but more of something to occupy his mind with. Always quiet where she went, what did that mean. Thanos really didn't remember what quiet truly was anymore. Not with the constant nattering in his ears. To have quiet once more, well it might be nice, but having had War and Peace around for so long it might be more bothersome than anything. "It is never quiet where I am." He said idly. Not that she would understand. She couldn't possibly understand.
War crawled down Thanos' face and perched on the tip of his skull where his nose once was. "Look at him! He's like a confused little foal. Snap out of it man!" She squeaked loudly. "Leave him be, it could do him some good." "Good? We don't want good! We want evil!" War now stood on her hind legs looking into Thanos' eyes. "We want evil remember."
Thanos stamped his foot to stop the rats current fight. Not like it would work, but perhaps it would distract them for a few seconds so that he could concentrate on the task at hand. He finally looked back at the mare and his mind went blank, not like that was hard to do. He couldn't manage to say anything, damn what was wrong with him. Had Hell truly messed him up that badly that he couldn't hold a conversation with a mare anymore. He looked her over then noticed an odd object tied into her tail. Ah there we go, that was something they could talk about. "What's that?" He said as he motioned to the item in her tail. Surely he had seen something like that before, he vaguely remembered what it was. But why did she have one in her tail.

Imbrium waited patiently for his answer. Never quiet where he was? What did that mean? She supposed he might mean his herd. Maybe he was always being bugged, but that wouldn't explain why it was never quiet when he was alone. Perhaps he meant his thoughts? Yes that could be it. Maybe he was just always thinking a lot and never could quite quiet his thoughts, and perhaps when he did he was just surrounded by his herd. Yes that must be what he meant.
The black mare was about to reply when the stallion pointed out her Gourd. Ah yes, actually she was surprised he hadn't noticed it sooner. Then again she had tried to hide it in her tail rather well. Her face was hot and she became flustered as she was tried to come up with a response.
"I uh," She started then took a deep breath and went on. Why should she care what some stallion thought of her? Imbri had only just met him! "Well that would be my gourd. I found it as a kid. It's all hollow, I think it's something some two legger threw away. I used to," She stopped for a moment too embarrassed to go on. No no, she could do this. "As a foal I was kind of, um, shunned from the herd and on those particularly bad days I would kind of pretend it held a different world for me. One where I was loved." Her voice trailed off then. Traces of hurt had lined her words and the memories she held were not friendly ones.

Thanos listened carefully as Imbri explained the about the item in her tail. Had he been able to smile, he might of. The story was...intriguing, no that wasn't it. Amusing? That sounded better. Ah so she was shunned from her family, that certainly explained why she was on her own now. But surely she could have found another herd to live with right? Or was the idea of being tied down to a herd too much for her. He took a step close to her to...comfort her? Was that right? No, no it couldn't be that. Or did he want to comfort her? He shook his head. Blasted thoughts, they were more broken now than ever. How was it she had this affect on him. She was not a living dead like he was, he shouldn't even be talking to her. And yet it was odd, he couldn't see to walk away.
Peace pranced up and down Thanos' back. "Ah it is beautiful isn't it? To be in love." His voice held a happy tone, which wasn't all that different from how he normally spoke. "Love?!?" War cried out. "He cannot love. We are not hear to love!" Seeing that Thanos was not thinking straight she had to do something drastic. So she quickly climbed up to the top of his head and bit his ear.
Thanos cried out in pain. "What did you do that for?" Damn that hurt, he thought. War had never done such a thing before. Sure she was a hate-filled little creature but she had never turned on Thanos before. Was she jealous of all the attention he was giving Imbri? The idea of that was just silly. Why would a rat be jealous of that sort of thing. He shook his head hard, nearly launching War off it. For the first time since he met the rats he wished them to go away. But a small part of him feared that if he lost them he would be more broken than ever. No, they had to stay, he needed them. He looked at Imbri and didn't know what quite to say next.
Wait what had War said before she viciously bit him. Something about love? Was that what he was feeling? It didn't feel like love...of course he couldn't really remember what love was. Should he ask? No, that wouldn't do him any good, he had to figure this out on his own. Now back to the conversation at hand, where had he been going with it? Ah yes. "A different world huh? Was it like this one? I mean...what did it look like?"

Imbrium had stood silently in embarrassment watching the stallion. Were those rats? How had she not noticed them before? Perhaps that was why it was never quiet where he went. She did hear an occasional squeak but still wasn't sure how he never had any quiet. Ah, oh well she'd probably never really know.
Imbri was just about to ask about the rats when Thanos spoke up again. Well she could wait until a bit later to find out where they came from. "What did it look like?" Well, she supposed he was humoring her. After all, it hadn't ever been a real world. Just something that she had made up as a foal to try and escape her every day life. If he wanted to humor her then fine, she'd tell him. Although perhaps he was only doing it to make fun of her? He did almost look like the sort but she doubted that was what he wanted. She didn't want to think that anyway. Oh drat. What were all these feelings she was experiencing? Love. No no, that couldn't be it. The thought had drifted through her mind for only just a moment. She hadn't known him long enough for that.
"Well," She continued on, shaking off the weird feelings she was experiencing. "I suppose it looked a lot like this world. Except it was a world for just me. My herd was gone, my mother gone, only the birds and the trees. I could lay out in the grass under the sun, for it never rained unless I wished it. Typically it matched my mood unless I didn't want to. If I cried it poured, if I wanted to hurt something it stormed. There were a lot of weird weather changes." She smiled at the stallion. Yes her world was interesting. But she had felt safe there. She wished that she could have actually gone into the gourd, but that wasn't exactly possible. Now it was simply a memory, her only friend.

Thanos listened to Imbri's story about the gourd. It was interesting, she had made all that up as a foal. The mare did seem to be quite smart. "It sounds....beautiful." He replied after she had finished. That was the right word...beautiful. Yes, that sounded right. But wait, beautiful disgusted him, he should have found that story revolting. Damn why was he still talking to her? He had to think, had to figure out what was happening. But every time his eyes fell on her his mind went blank. And what came out of his mouth was not what he wanted to say, at least he didn't think it was what he wanted to say.
He bent down to take a mouthful of grass. Perhaps this would give him the change to think of his next words. His teeth bit into the lush green. It felt oddly familiar. As he went to chew it most fell out of his mouth. Curses, he couldn't even graze properly anymore. This was almost more frustrating than trying to talk to this mare. He just wanted to...bash his head against a tree. That would surely help.
"You're doing fine, just keep it up." Peace said to sooth out Thanos' nerves. "Don't encourage him!" War chirped. "He should not be playing nice. We didn't come here for nice! We came here with a purpose remember." She stamped her feet into Thanos' flesh.
Thanos bobbed his head. Yes, War was right. They did not come through the weakened barrier of Hell to have nice talks with the other horses in this land. They had came here to....damn why did they come back. Oh curse this mare. She was not helping his thoughts at all. He had to get away. Yes, he would just leave. So taking his own advice, and the rats as well, he began to walk away form Imbri, back towards his herd.
It didn't take long for him to stop and turn back to the mare. Somehow he just couldn't leave her, not yet at least. He returned to her and looked into her glowing eyes. "I uh...I...I'm not really sure what to do." He stated. It was the truth, as far as he could tell. The mare seemed to fuddle his mind more than the rats bickering did. "It's been a long time since..." What could he say, since he died and went to Hell. Would she believe him? Would she think him crazy? Damn this was so hard.

The black mare stood a few moments in silence as she awaited the stallion's response. Beautiful? Yes she supposed her world was beautiful. Although that hadn't really been the reaction that she had been expecting. Really she thought he would have laughed at her, made fun of her world and the sad life she had had as a child. Well, she had learned you couldn't rely on others but for some reason she was feeling herself drawn to Thanos. Like she knew she could trust him. What was with her today? Imbri quickly shook her head trying to rid herself of these thoughts.
She was about to speak once more when he turned away. For some reason she felt her heart sink, like a light had just gone out. Well, she supposed she must have been wrong. It had been wrong to listen to her heart. When had it ever really done anything for her?
Imbrium was simply standing where Thanos had left her when she saw him turn around and come back. Immediately her heart turned over and she felt a switch turn back on. Geesh she really needed to stop doing that. However she did have to admit she was happy that he had come back.
"Since what?" She asked a little puzzled. Was he talking about his wounds? Imbri did have to admit that she wasn't entirely sure what to do either.
