Hale was sitting by himself in the kid's section of a book store, looking through a book that was about, as far as he could tell, a little boy and his dad, tip of his tail flicking back and forth happily. Given he couldn't hear and therefore had enough trouble speaking verbally, he already knew how to read a few different words, though far from enough for the story to really make any sense.
He looked up curiously, browsing the minimal crowd for some sign of his father, fluffy ears flicking in either direction a few times, as though trying to find him by hearing his voice, something that was, as Hale knew, impossible. Unfortunately, he'd managed to forget the outer piece of his implant once again and, as such, was unable to really hear anything except a few odd inner workings of his mind, otherwise known as a thought process that was based entirely on all of the senses that were not hearing; otherwise, his thoughts were almost completely wordless.

Mai, being ever the optimist, thought that a trip to the bookstore would do wonders for her newest charge, Chordata. She had been surprised that the rock turned into a girl instead of a boy, but under the toddler's strict demands of 'she, I is she!', Mai had been proven otherwise.
Raising little Chordata had been a...well, a chore. She was possessive and bitter, nearly ripping out both of her Aunts throats as soon as she was born, that is until Mai explained that they were HER aunts, and then she became accepting of their existence, though she still growled if one of them talked to Mai without her approval when she was in the room.
"You go and pick out some books in that section over there," Mai said, "I'm going to go and look for the cookbook your one aunt wanted, and then I'll be right over"
Chordata gave no acknowledgment that she had heard the suggestion other than the quick turn and trudging over to where Mai had pointed out.
That's when she caught sight of him, his fuzzy ears and long body. Her eyes narrowed and she merely stood there, to see if he acted first.
To see if he were a threat.

It was quite a while before Hale noticed the offset of colours against all the vibrant ones, the fins that were warping the background of absurdly happybright colours, most of them yellow. Light bouncing off the silvery scales helped with that, before Haley finally looked up from his book and blinked at the colourful fish-like female ears flicking back and head tipping to the side curiously.
Placing his book down on the floor next to the chair he'd been sitting on haphazardly, he walked over and, still lacking a real idea of a personal bubble, reached out to run his scaled fingertips gently over the fins that were attatched to her head, tail flicking back and forth with interest. Realizing, however, that he didn't know who this other was, he stepped back, looking up with wide lilac-brown eyes, trying to remember the proper procedure for this, before extending his hand. "Ma-y nam's Hhhail-ree-un Lus-Byar. Nys tmee' yoo."

Chordata's eyes widened as she was touched, but honestly, it wasn't a bad kind of touch. It was the touch of curiosity, one of the few that she obviously didn't mind. The boy had escaped death by not lingering though, because she could only stand it for so long.
Rubbing the place where his fingers had been as if trying to remove something that he had left there, she listened to him prattle off some sort of nonsense. It kinda sounded like he was telling her his name? She wasn't 100% sure, but she was going to assume that that was what it was.
"Chordata Dae," she offered rather sternly, still slightly wary, though not as much as before.

At this response, he actually regretted the fact that he'd forgotten his hearing aid, and stared up at the girl a bit blankly, biting at his lower lip awkwardly. He mouthed out the name the same way that the girl had said it, trying to get it figured out, looking more and more embarrassed with each passing moment. The hardest part was the last bit of her first name; ala, ata, ara, ana, all were possibilities, and he couldn't figure out which one was right!!
Finally, quelling his worries, he gave a small, sheepish smile. "Cccan ca-all Da-ee, pleathe?" he struggled through the words, once more wondering where his daddy had run off to, ears flicking back. "Thsorr-ee. I cannn't he-ar. Dow-no ha-ow ttto sa-ee yyyo-ew nam'."

Chordata tilted her head as she listened carefully to what the boy was saying, going over it again in her mind once before she was at least somewhat certain as to what he was trying to tell/ ask her.
"Yes, you can call Dae" she said finally. "Can can Hail? Rest was hard to 'stand" she then asked rather bluntly before she poked at one of his ears.
"Fuzzy," she commented, staring at them a bit. "Does fuzz make hard to hear?"

"Tttan'ou," he replied, trying to thank the girl but figuring that, just like the rest of his speech, it had come out as garbled nonsense. Daddy was one of the only people who could really understand almost all of his nonsense words and promised him that he didn't speak badly. He couldn't even communicate in ASL yet, so was alienated from even other deaf children, his age or otherwise.
"Ca' caw Ha-el," he said, nodding to assure her that he didn't mind the nickname. Hale was fine for anyone to call him, it was Haley that was reserved solely for his daddy. When the ear was poked, it instinctively flicked backward, eye on the same side closing reflexively. "Umm..." he said, fidgeting with the edge of one of his ears.
"Nnuh-uh," Hale said finally, trying to remember how his daddy had explained it the first time. "Go' sssickez whe'I wass li'l. Haa' high fevvew n' f'iey ma-i insi'e eaws," he tried to explain, obviously trying hard to focus on the words to get them all out as properly as he was able to before he looked back at Chordata with an awkward semi-smile.

Chordata have a head tilt. Did he say that he got sick and it messed up his ears? That was the best of which she could understand anyway.
"Ah. Never got sick that bad." she stated, unsure of what it was like to become so ill.
"Hail still sick?" she asked finally, not frightened, only curious about the whole situation.

Haleriun nodded a bit, watching the girl as best as he could to understand what it was she was saying. He nodded a bit. "MmHmm. Not'ta lodda pe'ples get da' sickz," he replied, looking a bit sad before pulling a smile out of nowhere, trying to be a little bit more positive than he usually was. "Bu- um, da' means da' nodda lodda pe'ple can't hee-ar li'e me." That was a good thing after all, right?
When asked if he was still sick, Hale's ears flipped back a bit and he smiled. "Nuh-uh, no' rea'y. 'Cept no' hee-aring, I' be'er," he said with a smile, the tip of his tail flipping back and forth gently.
