What classes would you take at Hogwarts?
Why would you take them?
Which ones would you like and be good at?
Which ones would you dislike or be poor at?

Here's the course list, for your convenience. Elective courses are starred.
Transfigurations
Charms
Potions
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Astronomy
Herbology
History of Magic
*Ancient Runes
*Arithmancy
*Divination
*Muggle Studies
*Care of Magical Creatures

Things to consider:
-- Hermione originally took all 5 electives, which required a time turner.
-- She switched to 3 after becoming burned out. This seems to be a large, yet manageable load and did not require a time turner.
-- Ron and Harry each took 2 electives.
-- Hermione took all 7 NEWT-level courses.
-- Harry and Ron both took 5 NEWT-level subjects.

NEWTs
Transfiguration
Charms
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Astronomy
History of Magic

The first three are useful, so I'd take them. Charms would probably be the one I'd enjoy most out of the three.

I love astronomy and history in real life, hence I'd likely find them interesting at Hogwarts, too. smile Granted, Binns is a boring teacher, but the material would be cool. cool I don't like chemistry or gardening very much, so that rules out potions and herbology.

Electives
Ancient Runes
Care of Magical Creatures

I love studying language, so ancient runes would be one of my favourite classes. heart
And who wouldn't want a class where they got to hang out with animals? biggrin

I despise math, so I'd avoid arithmancy like the Plague. I certainly don't need Muggle Studies! rofl Most fantasy authors have divination be effective, but Rowling suggests that the average wizard is incapable of predicting anything, so I wouldn't waste my time with divination.

NEWTs
Charms
Transfiguration
Defense Against the Dark Arts
Potions

Charms seems like it would be an interesting class and since most commonly used spells seem to be charms it would be highly useful.
Defense Against the Dark Arts would be a must for me because I would make enemies without meaning too and I want to be able to protect myself. If something is important enough to me I defend it vigorously which is bound to step on a few toes of people who disagree with me along the way.
Transfiguration is would be a useful class though I think I would have some problems with the higher spells. My attention span isn't exactly the greatest in the greatest in the world at times and this would be a class that needed it. I would just have to study harder though.
Potions would be the class I loved the most. I find the idea of it fascinating so I would study and work the hardest in this class. I also believe that the enthusiasm I had for it would help me persevere at it when things got rough.

Astronomy is a class that I would like but I can't see myself being able to put the effort into that it would deserve so I would drop it. Of course I would continue to learn about it on the side when I could.
Herbology...I have issues with keeping plants of any kind alive so this would be a difficult class for me. Also plants have the ability to fight back after a certain level which is something that would end with me severally hurt.
History of Magic sounds like an interesting subject but the professor isn't the most enthusiastic ghost in the world. Its not that I don't like history but its one of the subjects that depend on the teacher and how they present the information to me.

Electives
Divination
Care of Magical Studies

Divination is a subject that I love in real life and know a little about so it would be a natural for me. While it might not be that effective for the average witch it would still be a subject that I could do great in with less effort than others.
Care of Magical Creatures would be one of my best grades. I love animals so this would be a chance for me to learn about and work with them. While Hagrid is known to bring in some not so friendly creatures they would have to be better than the possible plants I could run into.

Ancient Runes would not be the greatest subject for me because I would stress out over it too much.
Arithmancy is math and my skills at math are rubbish. I would not take a class I knew I would have to struggle with every assignment ever given.
Muggle Studies would be far to simple of a grade for me. While I will admit that I would not mind an easy grade I also like a small challenge to go along with earn it. I guess I want to feel like I earned the grade a little.

NEWTs
Potions,
I kick a** at making my own beer and food, potions isn't really that different, just a bit more...deadly. ^_^ Of course, I'd end up making cookies for extra credit, so I'd probably fail or something, lol.

Charms,
I like making things float and shooting bubbles. Thats a fun thing. Plus there's some terribly useful charms out there in the world. I think i'd be really good at this one, although I slur my words pretty often, so there might be a few explosions or accidental castings.

Herbology,
I have a decent greenthumb, and I'd like to enjoy the care and work that goes into the making of the makings of a potion and/or food. This would probably be my best class and I'd like as not spend all my time in there.

ELECTIVE
Divination.
I already do it, I hate math, I study language when I want to, and really? I'm great at making things up, so homework would be a breeze.

NEWTS
Astronomy-
I love space, studying space, planets, stars, and the total mystery of everything out there...
Charms-
It couldn't be too hard, can it? Though I would probably be the kid to blow something up but not saying the spell right.
Potions-
Really fun. I love cooking and blowing things up.
Defense Against the Dark Arts-
As long as we can also learn SOME dark arts. No? Ahhh: (.
Herbology-
If I can kill a cactus, a cactus, people, the simplist plant to take care of, I don't think I could handle moveing plants...
Electives
Arithmancy-
I'll take it, but I probably won't like it too much.
Divination-
Maybe I could be the only student to take it seriously. I really like it.

NEWTS

Potions: I love science class, and I'm fairly good at it. I like being able to combine two or more things to create something new. It fascinates me how certain chemical reactions can create something new, but you need just the right amount-too much or too little, it wouldn't turn out right, I mean who knows what could happen?

Transfiguration
: The concept of turning one thing into something else is what I would like the most about the class. It requires a lot of attention, and that would probably be a problem because my mind wanders a lot, but still, I think I would like the class, and over time, I would probably be pretty good at it. Plus, transfiguration is something that would be useful in real life, just like Potions.

Charms: Again, another class that would be useful in life. But in the books, it always sounds like a really fun class, plus the spells in that class are pretty common spells that you see throughout the series.

Herbology: I love working with plants and I really like gardening, so I think this would be a perfect class for me because it is very hands on. Granted, you probably wouldn't use a lot of it in real life, but who knows? It sounds like a fun class, and they seem to deal with a lot of interesting plants too in that class.

Astronomy: Ever since I was little, I have always been fascinated with outer space and the other planets and stars and everything else that's out there. In school, I would check out every book they had in the library about the planets. So, I would love this class.

I'm not sure about History of Magic, because Professor Binns is such a boring teacher, but I think I would find the class interesting because I love history. I mean, last year I read my World History textbook for fun because I found the topics in there quite interesting, and it was stuff we hadn't had time to cover. Same with Defense Against the Dark Arts, it would be really nice stuff to know, and could be useful in life, but I don't know.

ELECTIVES

Arithmancy: Math is one of my favorite classes of all time. So I think I might enjoy this class, and I'm quite good at math, too. Especially Algebra.

Ancient Runes: I love studying languages, unfortunately, my high school only offers German, Spanish, and French (boring languages) so I'm taking Spanish. But I really want to learn other languages as well.

I would never take Divination. The class (and Trelawney) never appealed to me in the series, and I would probably epically fail at it. Obviously, I don't need Muggle Studies, and I don't think I would want to take Care of Magical Creatures, either

NEWTS

Potions:My favorite class. I'm good at cooking and making mixed drinks so potions would be fairly easy for me.

Tranffigurations: BEing able to transform not only things but your self would be really awesome. I can pay attention really well so that is a plus.

Charms: This most of the spells you learn through charms it would be a good class to take.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: With out a doubt one of my favorite classes, exspecially if you get rid of the defense against part. Here would be a good class to see what they are teaching of the defense so I would know how to get around it.

Astronomy: I have always like space, stars and planets. So I would so take this class.

ELECTIVES:
Care of Magical Creatures: I have always liked animals and to be able to learn about new and some dangerous ones would be fun.

Ancient Runes: I love learning different languages so this class would be good for me.

Im not to good with plants so Herbology wouldnt be good for me.
I dont like Muggles so Mugtgle Studies wouldnt work.
Divination just doesnt appeal to me so I wouldnt take it.
History of Magic with Pro. Binn sounds boring so I wouldnt take it.

I would take:
Transfigurations
Charms
Potions
Defense Against the Dark Arts
History of Magic
*Ancient Runes
*Muggle Studies

I would probably dislike History of Magic because Binns is boring.

I would like Charms, Potions, DADA and Transfiguration; but I think I would have trouble with Transfiguration.

I would take Ancient Runes because I like languages and codes, and I would take Muggle Studies so I could understand the wizard perspective of muggles.

You guys do realize that the 7th level courses for the electives were considered NEWT courses too, right? After 6th year when they could be dropped, if you stuck with it until 7th year, it was a NEWT course.

I would take:

Potions: Because it just seems like it would be a good course, both in that it would be interesting and that it would be useful in everyday life.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: Because you never know who you're going to run into in a dark alley. Also because it would be an interesting class.

Transfiguration: Because being an animagus is a form of Transfiguration, so I would want to take it to study to become an animagus.

Charms: Because you learn a lot of the more useful magic in Charms.

History of Magic: Because I love History and I would like to be able to know as much as possible, and I don't learn too well from books.

Divination: Because I think that this would be a really interesting class, and I would really like to learn the practice, even if the teacher is nuts.

Care for Magical Creatures: Because I love animals and I would plan on having lots of pets, so it would be important for me to know how to take care of the animals.

Transfigurations: This would be one of my favs, McG and I might not get along all the time, but I would work hard to do my best in this subject so I'd earn her respect that way.
Charms : I'd probably do okay, not bad, not the best either. Which I think is true of most wizards.
Potions : Not sure on this one, I am good at Chemistry, but I suck at cooking. Bet I blow some things up before I get the hang of it.
Defense Against the Dark Arts : I find this one of the more pratical classes, so I'd take it and make sure I memorize everything, where as some classes you learn what you need to learn and then move on, for this one I'd suspect keeping the knowledge with you always is the best route.
Astronomy : I would love this class and do a lot of extra work for it if it meant getting to hang up in a tower at night, everynight, just looking up at the heavens.
Herbology : I'm not a plant person, I like looking at pictures but I'm not all that hands on so this would be one of my worst classes.
History of Magic
*Ancient Runes: I enjoy working with languages and teaching how to read and write them to myself as is, so I would most likely take and enjoy this class.
*Arithmancy : I don't love math, but I am a natural at it, so I would take this class and most likely enjoy the mix of numerology in with it.
*Divination : No thank you, I'd prefer something real and useful.
*Muggle Studies : Not really that interested except learning the Magical perspective on muggles - that is about the only thing that would get me to take this.
*Care of Magical Creatures: I'm not that skilled with animals so this would be something I avoid taking as soon as I can.

NEWTS:
Transfigurations: It doesn't seem all that useful, but I'd love to eventually learn how to transfigure myself! It could be really useful to be an animagus, as we know from the Marauders!
Charms: That seems like it'd be a really important class to take and it sounds like fun to me! I think I'd be good at charms; I'm really good at concentrating.
Defense Against the Dark Arts: Most definitely would take this one! It's very useful, even if Voldemort is no longer around. I'd love to give boggarts a try!
Astronomy: I've always been interested in the stars, so I probably would take Astronomy.
History of Magic: I've always been interested in history and History of Magic sounds really awesome, if only they'd replace Binns. I don't want to fall asleep in such an interesting class!

Herbology: I wouldn't take, I'm not really into gardening. I love the outdoors, but gardening is not my thing.
Potions: I'm iffy on this one, I sucked at Chemistry but I've always loved science. Maybe I'd give it a try.

ELECTIVES:
Care of Magical Creatures: I am a HUGE animal lover, I would absolutely adore this class! Hagrid may go to extremes sometimes, but it's important to know about those extreme creatures too. Just as long as he keeps his spider friends FAR from the lessons, I'm good! If he says anything about giant spiders, consider me absent that day!

Ancient Runes: Sounds way too complicated to me. I prefer languages I can actually read, I get frustrated way too easily. A part of me thinks it'd be interesting, but I know it'd just be too complicated for me.
Arithmancy: I hate math and I suck at math, I would NEVER take Arithmancy if I didn't have to.
Divination: Sounds like a load of bull to me, but I do like the way Firenze teaches it. Maybe I'd give his class a try.
Muggle Studies: If I was a full blood witch I may find it interesting, but as a half blood or muggle-born I don't think it'd be useful to me since I'd already know everything about muggles. Even if I was a full blood witch, I think I may find it kind of boring.

What about Flying class? I know you're required to do it first year. I think I'd hate it, I suck at sports because of my asthma. Flying sounds like it'd take the breath right out of me and having an asthma attack in midair sounds really scary! It sounds like fun, but being asthmatic makes me cautious of it.

For me I would choose:
-Charms
-Potions
-Defense Against the Dark Arts
-Tranfigurtion
-*Divination
-*Care of Magical Creatures

This is because I know I would enjoy charms and transfiguaration. Defense Against the Dark Arts is a must and Potions would be useful; I know I didn't put herbology up there but I might have taken it, it could be useful. Divination and Care of Magical Creatures would both be interesting.

Of course. That's why I dropped Potions and Herbology. and didn't take them at the NEWT level. wink

Classes I would take...
- Potions
- Transfiguration
- Charms
- Defense Against the Dark Arts
- Astronomy

Electives I would take...
- Muggle Studies
- Care of Magical Creatures
- Divination

~~

Why I WOULD take these classes...

Potions: I love science in my own Muggle school, and Potions is kind of like the Wizard equivalent of chemistry. I know Snape isn't the greatest person on earth, but he's definitely a good teacher, and Potions just seems to spark my interest. Whenever I'm roleplaying, I always put that I'm studying to be a Potions teacher =).

Transfiguration: McGonagall is my absolute favorite teacher at Hogwarts and I think I would greatly enjoy her class and do well in it. Learning how to change things into other things can prove to be fun, but also useful in life after Hogwarts.

Charms: Just by reading about Harry in Charms class and watching the scenes in the movies about it, I always thought it would be so fun to try! This class will also be useful later in life.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: At first, I would've only taken this class because I do need to learn how to defend myself against any Death Eaters that might cross my path, but then, I realized that the subject in general would be really interesting, if Hogwarts could get the right teacher for it (aka Lupin -sniffles-).

Astronomy: This subject has always fascinated me. I've always been so interested in stars and planets. Plus, you take the classes late at night so you can study the stars. I prefer the night more than the day, so it would be amazing to have a class at midnight =). I really wish that my Muggle school had an Astronomy elective...

Muggle Studies: Well, I know being a human myself, I would probably think of this as an easy A. But, seeing as I'm already so fascinated with Wizard subjects, I can only assume that, if I were a wizard, I would be equally fascinated with Muggle subjects. I would be the female equivalent to Mr. Weasley when it comes to Muggles.

Care of Magical Creatures: I love animals, Muggle and Wizard related ones. It would be awesome to get to work with them everyday. Plus, there's that element of adventure in that class, with the animals Hagrid brings in. I'd like a little spice in my life when it comes to school.

Divination: Now, before you say anything, I want you to know that this would only be a backup class in case I couldn't take my other two electives. I think Divination is a very interesting subject, when taught right. I would much rather have Firenze (sp?) teach Divination than Trelawney. But, as far as telling the future, I'm game =). If only we could find a real fortune-teller to teach this class, I would be much more inclined to take it as more than just a backup class.

Why I WOULDN'T take the other classes...

Herbology: I know that, if I really wanted to become a Potions teacher, I would have to be good in Herbology because I'll need to keep my plants used for different potions right and everything. But, this subject just seems beyond boring to me. My mother already has millions of plants in our house and backyard and I'm getting sick of it. But, I'm sure I would still do well in the class if I was somehow forced to take it.

History of Magic: I'm already horrible at history. My first final grades of C's were in history classes at my Muggle school. Plus, why do we need a whole class on the history of a bunch of magical dead guys? There's a little invention called the library where we can get all the information if we really wanted to. But, if we don't want to, I don't think we'll have to. When will we really use history anywhere in life?

Ancient Runes: Languages have never really been my forte, although I breezed through Spanish at my Muggle school like it was nobody's business. But, mostly, what I don't like about language classes is that there are too many group projects and presentations going on. I'm the type of student that just wants to sit back and learn by myself, not with other people. And I have major stage fright when it comes to languages I've just been learning. I'm always worried I'll say something wrong and embarrass myself. Being a teacher might not be the best job for me, then, but at least if I'm a Potions teacher, I'll be able to speak in English.

Arithmancy: I hate math. Plain and simple. I know I'll probably use it later in life, but if I can take as little math as possible, I'll be a happy camper. I'm surprisingly okay at it, but okay won't cut it with most math classes. Although I got an A+ in my Muggle Geometry my freshman year...I'm good with shapes =). But that's about it.

~~

I've just noticed, in Hogwarts, you're taking classes on stuff you'll actually use in real life, whereas, in Muggle schools, half the stuff they teach you will never come up later in life. Haha
