Here is the topic for those wanting to learn and those willing to teach.
Things posted here are not limitted to a class, but anything that needs questioning and answering.
Feel free to post random bits of cool or important info you may have, but If you are answering a question, please quote that question when doing so.

I have a project for my biology class where we have to make an analogy for an animal cell. My group (um, well... me) thought of doing Hogwarts and the other two agreed. It isn't as easy as we thought.
I ask you, my fellow Hogwarts students, to please help me finish and double check our analogies. Our protiens are the students. (If you haven't realized yet I need this for school so everything has to be cannon. I wish I had Hogwarts, A History!)
Nucleus: The Headmaster's office because the headmaster is in charge in running the school and his office is where he works. Nuclear Envelope: The Gargoyle that guards the Headmaster's office because it only lets in those who have the password. Nucleolus: The Deputy Headmistress because she is in charge of the admitance letters. Nuclear Pores: Windows because owls fly in them to deliver and send messages. Cell Membrane: The wards because they keep people out and let some in. Transport Proteins: The great doors in the entrance hall way leading out to the grounds because they allow large people and things in and out. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: The teachers because each specializes in one subject. Golgi Apparatus: N.E.W.Ts because your score on them depends on what carrers you are eligible to be shipped off to. Mitochondria: The kitchen because that is where the food is prepared to get energy for the students and staff. Lysosomes: Filch because he is the custodian who cleans up after anyone (I think that House Elves would work for this too, but I don't know which is better to use). Vacuoles: Broom Cupboards because they are used for storage. I don't know how well this works and if anyone can give me a different example for this one I'd be grateful. Microtubules: The walls because they hold the castle up so it doesn't come crashing down on their heads.
I still need: Microfilaments Marker Protiens Receptor Proteins Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Please help me! I'll post this in a few other places as well. Artemis.

For the lysosomes, I think that the house elves would be a better analogy than filch. Filch would be more like a single organ whereas lysosomes are multiple little things that roam the cell like house elves.
And it's been awhile since I've taken biology, but isn't there only one vacuole normally in a cell? if so, then I think that the room of requirement would be better because it can take in loads more than a broom cuboard.
As for the last few, I think it would be helpful if you would post what those things do. I remember most of the major cellular parts and their functions, but as I've said, it's been awhile since I've taken biology.

Plant cells have only one but animal cells can have more and they are usually smaller.
Microfilaments; any of the minute actin-containing protein filaments that are widely distributed in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, help maintain their structural framework, and play a role in the movement of cell components Marker Protiens:Found attached to the outside of the cell membrane they act as indicators to the cell's function Receptor Protiens: A membrane bound protien that recieces the message from the marker protien Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum: The rough endoplasmic reticulum is distinguished by the ribosomes embedded on its intertwining membrane. Because of these ribosomes, the rough endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for protein synthesis

The first thing that comes to mind for the microfilaments is magic. magic is responsible for making Hogwarts, Hogwarts. This may be a little abstract, but Hogwarts reputation for a school seems to indicate it's function, and atract students and teachers. Receptor protiens would be the protective spells around the school. I would think that the spell would give the proper people warning of an iminent attack or other such important information. If not magic, then owls would be the next best thing. They are not limited to the membrane, but they do bring information to the proper persons. Rough endoplasmic reticulum would be the teachers who manufacture students capable of doing magic, and so creating more magic/protiens.

If I were you, I would also consider maybe doing the assignment with the entire magical comunity using the ministry of magic, the minister, the parents, the school, gringots and such.
If you think some ideas are a little sketchy, try a broader aproach.

Should you ever have an English essay and you choose to use Harry Potter as the subject, I could give you insight far superior to what I gave for the cell analogy.
Or if you ever have questions on parts of the books, I very much enjoy discussing the books on an intellectual level.

Eliza XD Does anyone here know any interesting trivia? I especially like wordplay. This is one I especially enjoy. Have you ever heard a child say "mind your own bee'swax"? Most people would think this is just a juvinile expression. However, people used to use bee'swax extensively for cosmetic purposes. It covered blemishes, and pock-marks and such. but it melted fairly easily. When someone was sitting next to a fire, or say getting nervous because they had a loosing hand and were playing poker with a few friends, they would apear to " loose face" If you caught someone staring at your face, it was comon to say agressively " mind your own bee'swax!" out of irritation.

Most people know that the harry potter series makes extensive use of Latin, but not many people know how incredibly erroneous the use is. There are loads of gramatical errors in nearly everything.
