This is a practice thread for learning the ropes for Lady_Theia and myself. It would be appreciated that anyone else please not interfere, unless perhaps your username is lady_skuld because then you're the resident guru who'd know better than us.

At any rate, first up is a character, as it's hard to beat stuff up otherwise. I'm going to take the Gina character from Skuld and myself's practice run for the sake of expediting the process and because we're really only going over the basics at this time.

The character profile is as follows:

Attack- (Base Attack Bonus + Stat modifier)
Melee (str): 0 + 1 = +1
Ranged (dex): 0 + 0 = +0
Special (wis): 0 + 0 = +0

Damage-
Melee (str): 1d4
Ranged (dex): 1d4
Special (wis): 1d4


Origins- xxxx


Some things to point out is that strength tends to deal with melee attacks, dexterity with ranged attacks, and wisdom with special attacks. Constitution deals with defensive power.

The additional strength indicates a higher proficiency with melee attacks, although at this point it's marginal, and other attacks are still quite worthwhile.

What's the "1d4" type stuff? That's the number and type of dice to use when rolling dice to determine damage and various other things. 1d4 means one four-sided die. 2d10 would be two ten-sided dice. For rolling to hit an opponent, we'll be using 1d20, or one twenty-sided die.

Ah, that's true, she did do that... Though you'll notice it's essentially the same thing, only with some bonuses that aren't really doing much yet. We can use that table if you like, though. Just give it a name or something, I guess.

Either way I don't think it's going to make a real big difference in showing how combat works.

Alright. I'll start off, then.




You awaken from a long slumber, squinting in a sudden light that's cast over you. Rubble is strewn about you, the remains of some kind of ancient crypt. Nearby, a frightened and lost soldier backs up and mutters, "Oh no, not again!" before readying his taser. It seems you have a fight on your hands.

((Once again, for the sake of expediency, we'll just use Wilhelm. As a human NPC, we really needn't worry much about such things as class or size bonuses anyhow. He's just a punching bag, ultimately. Enemy stats also aren't typically revealed, but for practice purposes we'll do it here.


Now, at this point, you can choose to attack him, which I suppose would be a good course of action. Feel free to use either a melee (punches, kicks, etc.), ranged (thrown), or special (fire breath, etc.) attack, and roll a single 20-sided die.

((Exactly! You rolled a 2, and Wilhelm has 0 toughness, so he takes the full damage. He now has 8 of ten hitpoints left. Now it's his turn to attack.))

Wilhelm staggers backwards from the blow, and wipes his bloodied lip. Taking out his taser, he fires.

((Now, he gets a bonus of +1 which is added to his roll of 12 to make 13. This means the attack connects, since it's higher than your reflex of 11, and now we roll for the damage that you take.))

This gives us a total of 16, once you add in the +1 bonus. This looks like it'd be very, very painful, and it would be if it weren't for your 13 toughness. Instead, you take a measly 3 damage, and it becomes your turn again.))

The taser hits, delivering a decent shock that sends a jolt through your system. Wilhelm smirks, thinking he may have a chance at this after all.

((Okay, so that brings my hp down to 19. So Melee goes aginst Fortitude, Ranged goes aginst Reflex, and Special goes aginst will, but when it comes to dealing damage, it's all in the toughness...))

Reina was orriganally planing on going back to sleep, but now she was fully awoke. She closed the distance, readying another fist to swing at him...

((You've pretty much got it down pat. Pretty easy, right? Let's finish off this shmuck and get you leveled up! smile

At any rate, with a roll of 20 you've pretty obviously hit the guy, so you can go ahead and do your damage roll smile ))

Willhelm reels back from the pain, holding his chest a moment before getting his beating stick out and taking a swing in retaliation.

((So now he's down to 6 HP. If you want to continue, we can do so, but if you want we can always skip to leveling up to the next experience level, too, if you think you've got a good grip on everything smile ))
