Abeline frowned down at the name on the little printed sheet in her hand. She hated studying. She hated that the school thought that it was necessary for her to study. She was perfect as she was, why would she need to improve? But maybe it would be nice to get a score back on a math-test that wasn't below average, and probably, her science knowledge needed to be expanded.
So they had sent her to a brainac kid, obviously. Someone who was really good at all the things that Abeline wasn't. Not that Abeline wasn't good at them, but she couldn't be the best at everything, that was silly. There was no way that the teachers could have messed this one up; for once.
The room in front of her was the study hall, a place that she barely knew the location of most days since practice for the ballet took up far more of her time then text-books. She even missed classes sometimes, and that was probably why she was here. Abeline paused at the door to the study-hall, scanning the room. Her figure briefly illuminated in the doorway. Poised, elegant, completely at home, as though studying were a noble sport. She had her little book bag, swung aptly to one side. And she looked around the room and wondered why the few students in the corners didn't have better things to do?

Barren Pines.
Where everyone knew everyone.
Abeline was one of those people Kimberley didn't know much about past her name. Partially because of coincidence and conflicting schedules, and partially because she'd never extended the effort. From the gossip she'd caught wind of she was a real b***h, which was fine. She was probably only that way because she wasn't liked much, and if she wasn't liked much she was probably a nerd. If she was a nerd, that meant she was good at book stuff and could help her.
That had to be some kind of math, didn't it? Bitchy + Nerd = Study help?
She was learning already!
The pink, flowery bag hung off her shoulder stuffed full of make-up and educational (aka boring) things. Mostly make-up. "Abeline! I'm here! Where are we sitting?"

The Ice Queen caught sight of her study-buddy, or more correctly, her study-buddy caught sight of her. She'd heard Kimberly's name before, had heard that she was popular and fashion conscience, but that didn't mean that she wasn't good with books, right? Maybe she was a book-smart cheerleader. Abeline made a beeline for the other girl.
"We will sit here." Puny mortal. She came to stand at a desk near Kimberly and promptly placed her bag down on it. Looking at Kimberly, she didn't seem much like the book-smart type. But surely the teachers in charge of study-buddies wouldn't put two students who were not so quick witted together.... surely?

The girls had hardly enough time to sit looking at each other and looking awkward before there was a knock on the study hall door -- "Hello, ladies!" said the woman brightly.
It was one of the nurses from the nursing office -- Barren Pines had a couple of them, as obviously they poured a lot of resources into their medical... section? There was a medical section? Oh, well, what the hell. There were a couple of friendly nurses who were a little faceless, dressed in slacks and white shirts and cardigans more often than not. The Ice Queen hadn't had more than enough time to look down her nose at Kimberley, and Kimberley not enough time to look at the Ice Queen and formulate the mental word 'b***h', than the nurse apologetically came towards them with her bag.
"I know you're studying, so I'll be quick!" she said. "Roll your sleeves up, ladies, it's time for your weekly blood test."
She smiled. She smiled a lot. She had also put her bag up on the table next to them and was taking out her kit.

Kimberley was just the right variety of moron to avoid listening to this woman: The mindless-and-highly-impressionable-rabid-Twilight-fan-stupid. Needles had always bothered her, but after seeing how much they terrified her beloved Bella Swan, she started thinking way too much on the matter. There were people dumb enough to talk themselves into being afraid of something.
This one's name was Kimberley Bennett.
"Oh, my Gawd, you have got to be kidding." These nurses were creepy! All health care workers here were. Yikes! "You are not touching me with that, lady. Are you even really a doctor or a nurse or whatever?" Who just had blood tests in a study area?! As if she needed another reason to hate this place!
Nose way, way up in the air, she looked to Abeline and fully expected to be backed up on this.

Abeline looked at the nurse and then back at Kimberly. She looked the nurse up and down, the woman seemed pretty real t her. After all there was an entire medical section. She glanced at Kimberly, not really aware as to what the objection was coming from. "We have weekly blood-tests now?" Was all she could ask. Abeline didn't fear needles, after all the nursing staff were obviously there to keep the students healthy and it was an important part of day-to-day schooling.
But a weekly bloodtest; were they looking for something in particular? Had there been a disease outbreak that Abeline wasn't aware of? Both of the girls were physically fit, active people, so perhaps... she shook her head gently. She was overthinking it.
"I will go first then, so as not to waste too much of your time." She was already rolling up her sleeve. After all, it wouldn't distract too much from the study.

"Of course you have weekly blood tests, dear," said the nurse officiously, as though telling a child that yes, Monday came every week at the same time. She pulled out her needle and did all of the professional-looking things nurses did when they were prepping disposable needles -- wiped the inside of Abeline's elbow with rubbing alcohol, and then --
When she was taking the blood, she did something odd. She held her hand cupped over the insert so that Abeline and Kimberley couldn't see the contents of the vial, and immediately turned around and labelled the vial with nothing more than a "Miss Froust, right?" before giving her one of those small bandages over the area, then taking a new needle and approaching Kimberley with a smile. "Roll your sleeve up, dear."
Abeline and Kimberley could see a slit of the vial through the bag.
The blood did not appear red.

"Well, I've never had one," Kimberley sneered. This dumb girl was useless as a study buddy and as back-up. She was getting her just deserts, far as the cheerleader was concerned, by having a needle drove into her skin. She didn't look bothered, but she must have been! How could you not be?! Kimberley shuddered.
The odd way the vial was handled didn't strike her as anything out of the ordinary. Not at first. Only after her eyes landed on the bag did she panic.
Something was not right with this school, and here was a nurse, drawing blood that was not colored like blood.
There was only one realistic assumption for her at this point and time:
Abeline was a monster with discolored blood and the one causing all the trouble around the residence and probably eating people.
"BILLY!" the squeaky-voiced girl screamed, bolting to the door with full intention of running out into the hall, down it, and around and around until she found her boyfriend and protector. Surely he would save her from psychotic nursing staff and monsters in teenage girl's clothing.

Abeline was not unused to seeing her own blood, but she thought perhaps that the nurse was trying to shield it from her because she was worried that Abeline was afraid of needles- which she wasn't but it was sweet of the woman to do that.
And then as the woman turned to take Kimberly's blood, Abeline watched her study-budy run for the hills as though the hounds of hell were on her heels. Well, she'd seen afraid of needles and now she'd seen phobic of needles. Abeline wasn't going to chase her, that would require too much effort, although now she realized that she had no study-buddy for the afternoon.
"Well, like a short-tailed possum fleeing at the sight of movement, she's gone." And boy, was Kimberly fast too. Her scream had turned a few heads, including Abeline's but what this 'Billy' could do was a mystery. It was just a needle.
Abeline hadn't noticed her own blood in the vial, nor would she have realized there was something wrong with it- she was failing chemistry and biology. She shrugged and looked back at the nurse. "You could probably just call her to the nursing office instead of chasing her."

"Oh dear, oh dear," fussed the nurse. "I've had a few girls react like that to needles. I'll have to call her in. Thank you for being such a duck, love!" She was gathering up her equipment, looking distressed. "At least somebody took their needle like a little soldier!"
She smiled at Abeline and zipped up her bag. "Well, I'll leave you to your study -- come and see us if the wound starts hurting," she added officiously, and then she left.

Abeline plunked down in the seat. Glancing down at the bandaid on her arm. Actually, she was hungry now.
Kimblery was long gone, probably not returning, and Abeline figured she wouldn't get any study done- just as well, since while neither girl had known, they were probably just as bad as each other at academic interests- so she packed her books away and went off for a snack. She'd been good today, so maybe she'd totally pig out on some celery. And.... well, she had other practice to perform.
