There were just some days where a person craved something different in their life. Today was one of those days for Yvette. She was not going to be the caged bird, stuck on her own floor while working on homework in the common study area. No! Today was going to be a day where she marched to the first floor and set up camp at a table near the computers. Camp consisted of 3 books, ranging from math to science, each set up standing upright around her, like a little fortress.

Though the indigo haired girl did not look like the bookish type, she had set herself up to seem like one with her little work area. Her mind had told her that this way, she could get more work done, for when she was bored of working on math, she could move to working on chemistry, then move onto anatomy. None of these subjects were really interesting, so it would be a lot of flip-flopping of work.

Casually, she glanced around the room, her eyes wide and doe-like, seeming to judge how many people were around.

The one thing he'd forgotten about school was homework. Especially math. All those numbers confused him even more with all the numbers and random symbols that they liked to throw in for good measure. It was times like that that he wished he didn't think math was so useless. It was useless but that didn't mean it wasn't necessary at that point in time.

Topher stormed into the common room area, clutching his math book and notebook close to his chest as he took a moment to compose himself. He frantically looked around the room for the first person who looked like they could help. Immediately his eyes were drawn to the little book shield somewhere near the computers. "Yes!" The still panting teenager quickly made him way over to the solitary student, slamming his book down on the table. "Sorry if I totally startled you but I have a problem. I can't do math and my math homework is due in a little bit and I can't make heads or tails of this. You look like someone who knows math really well considering the books and all."

Somewhere during the rapid fire sentences, Topher was able to find the chair his free hand had been trying to grab. "I've never been good at math. Ever since I was little. It never really occurred to me that it was worth it ya know..." he finally took a large enough breath before continuing, "I mean, do you think it's important because I don't but it's important for this assignment and I need your help! Can you help me? Pleasepleaseplease!"

This was the sort of thing that Yvette was looking for! Something different! And having the dark blue haired boy zip up and start rambling over his own problems was definitely a welcome change. Her lips rose at the corners, creating a small smile on her rosy lips. When her lips parted, a tiny voice came out.

"Oh, hi there Topher!" She and the boy had the same level of math. Not the same class at the same time, but the same academic level. She turned towards her books and promptly pushed the two science books down so that the math one was still up.

"You know I always have time you help you, silly!" She couldn't help but wonder if her explanations would be just as confusing as they usually were. Poor Yvette rarely took the textbook procedure to solving the problems from their algebra class, so most times she tended to confuse people with her explanations.

Thinking over her own problems with tutoring, her cheeks flushed as she began to flip pages through her math book, still leaving it standing upright as she did such.

Th sudden mention of his name confused him for a moment. Topher leaned in to study her closely before slumping down into the adjacent chair with a thankful sigh.

"Those books hide you way too well Yvette!" Topher said as he dramatically flopped over the table, resting his head on his hands an inch or two away from the thick math book. Thankfully he'd found someone he at least knew. Well, sort of knew. He had been so desperate for help that he would have gone to any old person. Maybe that book tower actually helped this time!

"I was certain you were some creepy nerd sitting here with nothing else to do but math. Of course, you're not like that so don't think that I think you look that way. Those books are misleading,!" He chirped out quickly, a widening smile lighting up his entire face even as he hesitantly opening the offending algebra book to the assigned page. "I didn't know that you still called me Topher. Well, whatever you feel is best after all. It's kind of hard to switch up names when you know someone by something all that time and then suddenly it's like WHOA! They go by something else?"

Topher chuckled as he watched her finger through the upright book. "Seriously though, keep the books at table level. It makes you look studious and...not in the good way," Topher whispered to her, motioning his hand in an attempt to get her to put it back on the table before quickly tucking it back under his chin as he looked over all the problems. When he finally turned back to his book, the smile on his face quickly melted into an utter look of horror, eyes shifting over the chicken scratched failed attempts scrawled over the once pristine pages.

"This is totally hopeless..." The troubled teen groaned as he dig his face further into his sleeves.

In comparison to her friend's "Mile a minute" manner of speaking, she seemed to be left in the dust. All she had initially been able to get in was an "Uh...," an "Ummm...," a "...well...," and a "...but...." Her voice seemed to sink back into the sounds, not really standing out.

Even though it was easier for her to read her book while it was standing up, now she was having second thoughts as Topher suggested it was wrong. Hesitantly, she put her book back down at a normal level, flat against the table.

"Well... let me see what you got done at least..." she uttered as she attempted to tug his workpaper on over to herself. If he kept acting like this, it would be difficult to try tutoring him.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 10:28 am

The notion that he had actually gotten anything done was laughable. Even just the first few pages were nothing but eraser marks and harsh pencil marks that could have been mistaken for a series of phone numbers.

Topher felt the tug on his workbook and pushed it towards her. "If you can actually read any of that then you need to become a linguist. I barely even know what I wrote down. All the formulas are so confusing! It's like they're talking in a different language whenever they try to explain them..." he insisted, gesturing towards the relinquished notebook for emphasis.

"I'm really glad you could help me. I would've been at a complete loss if the person I actually thought you were sent me away. That would have been a disaster," Topher said as he lifted his torso off the table, moving to lean against it with his elbows.

"Do you have an extra pencil though? I think I dropped it while sprinting down the hall. My pencil doesn't even want to do this work it seems. It's ridiculous really," he chuckled weakly, eyes wandering towards the doorway he came through.

Yvette first looked at the paper the way it was supposed to, right-side up, hole punches facing the left edge of the paper, and a big gap in the striping towards the top edge of the paper. However, when she couldn't read it that way, she began to slowly turn the paper, looking at the partial writing from new angles. Unfortunately, this trick did not seem to be cutting it today.

Finding that Topher had done nothing but scribble on his papers, she opened up her book to the lesson from the previous day. In her quiet voice, she pointed out "That is because the teachers don't explain math right. There's an easier way to figure this out, but the teachers try to teach the long method first."

She used her own pencil to point at the lesson (as the textbook described it), using it to trace the words as she read along. However, her pencil stopped when the mention of an extra pencil came up.

Her voice was her usual quiet tone, but many times people mistook her tiny voice for uncertainty. "No, I don't have any extra pencils." Her lips frowned slightly, figuring the next thing her friend was going to ask was if he could borrow her current pencil.

Topher leaned in close to try and see what she was going over. It made a bit more sense to him as she traced the words but it was still all Greek to him.

"Eh. I guess I don't reallyneed a pencil all that much. It probably wouldn't be a very good idea anyway considering what my current paper looks like," he chuckled weakly, running a hand through his bangs nervously at the thought of his horrible writing. "Maybe you could just show me how to do a problem? I might work a bit better than going through the book. I mean, you're a great teacher and all but I'm more of a visual learner as it is."

Still confused, he tried to closer and see if she had completed any of the work prior to him getting there. "How do you figure out how to do these problems without the teachers help? I mean, all these shortcuts don't come out of thin air did they? Why do teachers teach the long way anyway if it's just there to throw us off guard. Why do numbers have to be so difficult. I suppose you're smarter than me though. You probably pick up this stuff pretty easy right Yvette?" Topher said as he placed his head on his hands, elbows still propped, while starring intently at her book.

With her pencil on her paper, she began to work on one of the problems. With her left hand, she pointed to the particular problem, just in case Topher missed out which one she was specifically working on. Most certainly, as Yvette worked on the problem, she seemed to cut out at least 7 steps in the problem. Her dark hair occasionally fell down in front of her eyes, in which she would have to pause and push it back up to its proper place.

"Well, a few years ago, I did ask a teacher about why they taught everything so wrong," she admitted quietly. "I just got a round about answer that translated to 'we do it that way because we get paid to.'" She shook her head quietly, recalling this failure of a mature answer.

For a moment, she seemed to zone out, but then when asked about how she knew all this stuff, she just shrugged her shoulder in a slightly shy manner. "I don't know. I pay attention in class and listen to how the teachers teach, but I usually figure out other ways of looking at it." Her cheeks flushed slightly before she once again attempted to redirect Topher's attention to her work.

"D-did that make sense? Or should I do another one?"
PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 10:25 pm

Watching her solve those problems was like watching the 8th wonder of the world. He never would have thought of looking at any of the problems like that. Of course, that's probably why he failed so hard.

"Paid to? Is that what everyone is worried about these days? Their children are getting crap lessons because they pay the teachers to do it in a way that most people don't understand? Either way, I think I might be able to do one by myself now but don't write that off as a success just yet," Topher growled out, completely exasperated at that moment. Though, the sight of her continuously whisking hair out of her face was way too adorably hilarious to let ta smile be gone for too long from his face. It wasn't long before he was grinning into his palms like a Cheshire cat.

"You should really put your hair back when you work," he uttered softly, "Isn't it a lot of work to keep fiddling with it when you're busy? I always see you doing that when you're studying. It's cute but it looks like it takes way too much effort. That's exactly why I've kept my hair short since grade school." Slowly bringing his arms back down on the table, he ever so gently pulled at the corner of his notebook to try one of the problems himself.

Yvette pointed a finger at her friend and uttered out "Teachers are a mixed bag these days. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get." She smiled for a moment before Topher crossed that line.

Crossed the line of things that were okay to say and what was not okay to say. The dark haired girl had known the blue haired boy for long enough to know that he very frequently made such observations that were a bit creepy. This was one of those moments. Her face paled a bit, but also strangely seemed to blush a bit.

"I... I-i don't really notice it t-too much."

Of course, now she got a bit self conscious, and began to try and think of times where her hair bothered her enough to want to tie it back. There were plenty of times, but perhaps she had mentally blocked it out due to how much it bothered her. Damn, it really sucked second guessing yourself so much. Her smile from before turned into a tiny frown.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 11, 2009 3:38 pm

It wasn't hard to notice the frown on her face. He honestly hadn't meant it in any sort of insulting way. Another great compliment in the world of Topher. Though he did half chuckle to himself when he realized the Yvette was blushing as well.

"Ah come on Yvette," he murmured, boldly placing a hand on her shoulder without a second thought, "You know I would never mean to hurt you. I just thought hair in your face all the time would be a bother. Don't take it too personal. I've always thought your hair was pretty any way you had it. I shouldn't have said anything. That was totally my fault. I hope you can forgive me." A sweet smile spread across his face as his hand slipped off of her shoulder and back onto the table.

At that moment, he realized something. He could be expected to work without a pencil. The one he dropped in the hall and was probably already snatched up by another wandering student. Quite the conundrum he's found himself in. He couldn't just ask her could he? He remembered the look of concern he gave when he mentioned it before. Either way, it wasn't like he had much of choice.

"Can I use your pencil for a second so I can try one myself? It probably wouldn't do any good if I just got by on intuition. That's...never really help me in math before." Topher drummed his free hand on the thick work book, hoping that she wouldn't think he would run off with it afterward.

Well, this wasn't helping her any. She felt as if she was fizzling down into nothingness because of Topher. She liked him well enough, but sometimes he just seemed to familiar.

"...d-d-don't worry about it... i-i-it was no b-big deal, T-t-topher." Her face was now a bright red color, and her eyes almost seemed to beg for a change of subject. Luck seemed to be on her side, for the subject was indeed changed. However, the subject seemed to not be as welcome a change as she had been hoping for.

"Ummm... uh... I'll l-let you try just one problem, okay?" Her fingers clenched tightly onto the small piece of wood. Even now, after such a simple request, she was wondering if it was okay. It wasn't like he was asking to take it to class with him. He would give it back to her right after one problem, right? Her hand extended towards him, offering the pencil with a mildly trembling hand. Why was it so hard for her, she really felt silly getting so worked up over such a small thing like a pencil.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:30 pm

"Don't worry. I'll give it back this time." Even as he took the pencil from her hand and started the problem, he still felt bad about what he'd said. Topher certainly wasn't one to hurt anybody. Especially someone who seemed so emotionally delicate. Maybe he would do something for her as a thank you after class. Yvette really did need some sort of positive attention that wasn't him chiding her about every little thing he noticed. Maybe he;d get her some truffles from the cooking class or lend himself to her fashion. He had to admit, as much as he loved the uniform, it could get a bit itchy.

As his mind continued to ramble to itself about possibilities to make her feel better, he managed to finish the problem. While it was still nearly illegible, it was certainly more organized and precise than the sad excuse for the attempts he'd tried earlier before her guidance.

He leaned back on the chair, plopping the pencil down in the binding of the work book, gently pushing it back towards her with a wide smile on his face. "Did I do it right? We get good marks for good work too even if we don't get the answer right. Dunno if I got it you at least showed me how to do it right at least."

She didn't want to seem clingy to her pencil. She really didn't. Yet, as the boy wrote, her eye was unnaturally drawn to her writing utensil. She knew he wasn't the sort to take things without permission, but that little nagging voice in the back of her head was telling her that it might accidentally get snatched away. Her attention only wavered when a paper got shoved in her direction.

She blinked, as if regaining her composure before glancing down at the paper. Then squinting at the paper. What the heck did he actually write?! Her fingers swiftly picked up her pencil again (it felt so good to get back your property) and began to trace under the boy's chicken-scratch attempt at solving the problem.

"...uh... I g-guess..." she offered, sounding somewhat uncertain, though whether it was the volume of her voice, or the real confusion she felt towards his work, she wasn't about to tell.
