I associate samurai with bushido, where they meet their enemy on the battlefield and do all the "I am Lord Blahblah from the clan of Blahblah" crap before that actually fight...and when it ends, the victor promises to treat his family kindly, etc.
Ninja don't get any of that crap. Backstab, whatever it takes to get the job done. It includes breaking rules.
