THE BROKEN CORNER
LOCATION - DESCRIPTION - PEOPLE CLIMATE - FLORA - FAUNA - LORE
LOCATION Located in the Western Sector, on the very border of the City of Durem. DESCRIPTION It is a small area, composed of half a dozen abandoned buildings sitting in ruin and rubble surrounding a vacant lot which is actually the hollows of a larger building that used to stand there. Around this vacant lot are partial walls, scattered throughout the middle are the remnants of pillars and rafters. The center of the lot is shadowed by a giant tree. Its extensive, yet malnourished shade spans the entire "corner". The darkest places lie underneath the shadow of the trunk. Also, the vacant lot has a wine cellar. The stairs are situated by the back wall and the steps look questionable, but for those who want aged cheese and wine it is not an effective deterrent. Upon descending the stairs, the cellar is cold and it becomes obvious that rats live there from the sounds. Just outside of the lot is a still-water fountain that is green with algae and covered in ivy. Frogs and unwanted goldfish flourish in the filth. It is overgrown all over with weeds. Inhabitants from other parts of the city sometimes use this place to discreetly rid themselves of unneeded junk and so there are many rusted cans rolling around and piles of litter everywhere. PEOPLE No one lives here, but people occasionally pass by either to dump things or abandon unwanted pets. CLIMATE It is always early spring weather, sunny with a touch of clouds and chilly breezes. FLORA Patches of grass, thistles, dandelions, queen anne's lace, sorrel, and clovers grow here. Weeds, all. FAUNA There is an abundance of pidgeons, crows, and sparrows that live here. Rats and field mice scurry to and fro between the buildings. Sometimes one sees a stray cat or dog that has become feral. There are frogs and goldfish in the fountain. RESOURCES This entire place is a recycler's dream. Broken glass, rusty scrap metal, paper, and miscellaneous cover the grounds like crumbs on a used napkin. MYTH / LORE The buildings here have not been leased or refurbished mainly because it is rumored to be haunted and known to have feral animals lurking in its shadows.

Junyuu the tanuki was touching up on her roots by playing a shamisen, or at least she was attempting to. It was a long instrument, somewhat like a sanxian, with a sound quality reminiscent of the sitar or a banjo. Literally, it was a long skinny banjo. Especially in her hands due to the fact she did not know how to play. The only thing she was doing was plucking the three silken strings over and over. Down, back up, across, and repeat in a slow fashion sometimes hitting the skin too. It was a very jazzy tune with a terrible, yet interesting, percussive sound.
"Tsu tsu tsukiyo da Minna dete koi koi koi Oira no tomodacha Pon poko pon no pon..."
She stopped suddenly to take a gulping swig of sake, then continued to sing.
"Makeruna makeruna
Osho-san ni makeruna
Koi koi koi, Koi koi koi
Minna dete koi koi koi..."
Her singing certainly was not an improvement to her lack of shamisen playing skill. She was a tenor executing over-the-top falsettos, overusing vibrato, and basically it could be said that she was an extremely theatrical off-key vocalist. The music was more in her heart and her head than it was in reality. She only noise, all tanuki have the ability to create noise. The traditional instrument of her kind was actually the belly drum, but she was too self-conscious a female to beat on her own chubby stomach, which she hid underneath the illusion of a thin adolescent girl. Plus, she imagined it would hurt after a while. How does one rock out on their own stomach without sustaining some internal injuries?
Flush pink cheeks revealed how drunk she must've been. The music was possibly the only thing motivating her to stay awake on this fine sunny day. Eyes already half-closed, and upper torso swaying, she was rocking herself to sleep. The lullabye just wasn't soothing enough, it was highly sobering. Being dressed in burlap and other dirty pieces of clothing she was blending in with the environment so well that anyone passing by wouldn't be able to see her. That, and because she was atop an abandoned shop building.

It was hard to miss the sound of such a unique instrument in the relative silence. It would come off the other buildings surrounding as echoes and faint whispers to anyone passing around to do what random thing they had to do in this part of town, but still it would be heard.
Perhaps her hearing was a bit better than the random person, because some six seconds after the red-headed, ratty dress-wearing lady paused and looked straight ahead, she looked directly up at the origin of the playing. Whether or not she could actually see the player was another matter dependent on how far back from the edge she was.
But for what it was worth, she had audience.

Junyuu the tanuki slowed the strumming of her instrument again as she was unable to coordinate her movements well enough to stop. Once again, she look another long drink from her seemingly bottomless gourd of sake. In comparison to her human hand the gourd was fairly large, about the size of a pitcher, but compared to her real self the gourd was a little more than half her size. Nursing it was no easy feat of accomplishment. Despite the number of times she lifted it and drank it was not becoming any lighter but rather heavier because of her growing lethargy.
"Pon poko pon no pon Pon poko... pon... pon... Po...ko..."
The song trailed off as she tried to lift the gourd one more time. Her eyes squinted with concentration, drops of sake spilled over her whiskers and her forehead. Easy, easy, just a little to the left, right, left, or maybe not... Then suddenly---she lost her balance and tumbled over the edge of the building and into the alley below. BOOM! Rattle! Rattle! A cloud of loose green leaves scattered from the impact. With a very dog-like squeal, she landed into a couple of trash cans and a heap of old newspapers. Still holding the sake--- but no longer in humanoid form. The fall shattered her illusion and now she was exposed! Plump, brown, and fluffy with a tail that needed grooming.
She flipped onto all fours. Something wasn't right... The shamisen was busted and her head was stuck inside. Dizzy and confused, the racoon dog creature that was Junyuu struggled to pull it off her head.

Theordac was not talented in the skills on communication, certainly not with humans and the other races of this world. But in his desire to learn more about the humans he had to travel into their cities. It was quick that Theordac learned the cities were much louder then any animal of the forest, and citizens wilder then any beast, and the life styles of which they lived far more complex then he imaged. Such amounts of information had to be processed and Theordac could not focus within the busy streets and so he came here. To the quiet corner of the city, amongst the ruins he found a large tree in which he sat against for sometimes days as he rested. Theordac leaned back against the tree and looked up at its tangled branches, the tree was misshapen by due to strange growth partners, a fracture of malnourishment. Theordac considered restoring the trees elemental energies, but it would likely just fade to the state was in now. Theordac closed his eyes, and formed a frown behind his long snow white beard, clattering of thin aluminum and poorly played music had filled his ears. Theordac came to his part of the city to get away from the craziness that was the city, not to find more foolishness. Theordac threw his hood up on his head, muffling the sounds just slightly, but at least it made the craziness feel further off.

As far as Junyuu the tanuki knew, there was no one around; what with her furry head jammed into the drum of the shamisen, she couldn't smell anything besides her own breath and the oiled skin of her broken instrument. Therefore, it natural of her not to bother with recovering the shape of her illusion to save face. She looked something like a dog whose head got caught into a can of food, but worst because there was no food in the belly of her instrument at all. Although it was true in most legends that the tanuki was witty and cunning, somehow it didn't apply to this particular creature who was stumbling out into the sunlit gravelly road, trying to smash the shamisen to pieces in order to free herself. Simply, if she were a smarter creature she would have realized that all she had to do to escape was to shut her yapping jaw, which was wide open in her panic.
"Ow! Ow! Owowowow!" Her voice, like a blackbird's, was thrown from place to place in the surrounding area. Junyuu had a habit of throwing her voice, a practice that suited her as it would've been suspicious to hear her humanoid form speak from the knees. That, and it usually disturbed others too much to directly converse with animals...
Her ringed tail rolled frantically about as she bounced and ricocheted off the ground. Apparently the wood was sturdier than it looked. Junyuu was like a ball of furious fur.

Theordac couldn’t possibly shut out the cry that penetrated his earlobes, there was no rest to be had as long as the voiced echoed through the ruins. Tightening his right hand on his sheep hook staff Theordac brought himself to his feet, placing most of his weight on his staff Theordac made his way towards the racket. Theordac’s had kept the appearance of a old man for his entire time within the city, a large cloak covered his body and his hood was up, covering his face is shadows leaving the only clear facial feature his long white beard.
Theordac made his way through the ruined corner of the city till he came across the ball of furious fur . But that wasn’t all he came across, the scent of rice wine that lingered in the air. Theordac muttered to himself “drunken fool” as he approached the stranger and without any warning grabbed the fur ball. With a firm grip he would try to hold the loony creature still, as Theordac expected it would require force to remove the noise maker from the head of the tailed creature.
“Just shut your gab” Theordac said, his tone of voice more demanding then caring. “Now you either you are gonna get you thick skull out of that drum or I am gonna break your toy in two” Theordac continued, as he prepared a grip on his staff.

Marcus, a little confused and out of place, stumbled on this place which was somehow called the broken corner. He realized that there was no one here, and the place seemed abandoned, but heard some annoying sounds inside, so he entered cautiously. Apparently he saw a dude yelling at a wierd, furry, half human creature thing he had never seen with its head stuck in something. It seemed that he was bullying the half human creature thing and Marcus decided to stop him, so he jumped with his foot about to kick his face."HEY....BOOT TO THE HEAD!" With that he landed a hit to his face.

Theordac caught the attacks approach in the corner of his vision, but was currently focused, and didn't have time to be jumping around. Channeling the element of earth Theordac lockted himself to the earth and hardened his body. He would take the kick to his cheek, and though pain would be expected, Theordac didn't react with human like emotions but instead spoke calming "Keep to yourself kid, i am busy" Theordac's eyes narrowed, as if suggesting he was frustrated with the new comer.
Theordac tightened his grip on the staff, if this fur ball didnt answer soon he was gooing to have to break the drum and the little brat aswell.

At first, Junyuu the tanuki didn't know how to reply but after suddenly hearing another voice and the start of the conversation, why, she couldn't resist social interaction! Despite the fact that it didn't sound like a peaceful conversation, like the kind a blind old lady would have with a deaf old lady, but more like the kind of conversation that involved manliness and two badgers. Her curiousity calmed her down enough that her jaw closed and the shamisen fell off her head. It fell with a wooden clatter to the ground.
"Toy?Whattoy?Doyouhaveatoyforme?MynameisJunyuu.Howaboutyou? AAAH! WAAAAATCHOUT! SNAKES!"
Her paw shot pointing above their heads. Indeed there were snakes as she said, instead of fallen leaves in the wind there were suddenly a storm of little green snakes falling from the sky. If they would both look away for only a fraction of an instant, she could escape... or at least think of something else to do.

The fact that his attack was stopped made him a little angry, but was now focusing on the snakes around everyone."Oh crud, what's with the snakes showing up, and how in the world did this happen?!"In any case Marcus needed to kill them in one attack, so he channeled his dark ability to one attack."This attack should do it,*deep breath*,YAH!!!"He punches the ground, casting his attack, which caused dark spikes to appear and aim at all the snakes in the area.

Theordac tried to tell the new comer to stop, but it was already to late. Not that anything was wrong with what he had down, but Theordac has confident it was a waste of magical energies. After all snakes falling from the sky, this was either a very complex spell or an illusion. And illusion was a much more likely.
The furious fur ball was free, but whatever laughable it spoke was unclear, with how it merged every word into the next into a slur of baby talk. Theordac placed his hand on his chin and cracked his jaw back into place, the kick had appear to knock it out of alignment. Despite his efforts Theordac had just managed to help produce further chaos. Keeping his calm despite that fact dark magic spike had been shot at snaked maybe an inch from himself, Theordac bent over and picked up the Shamisen. Examining the instrument that had started all the madness

The shamisen was indeed broken, and as soon as Theordac picked it up, it disappeared in a poof of smoke, leaving behind a broken hairbrush, and a rather used one at that. It was covered in loose hair. The tanuki afterall, used leaves often, but could transform any object into what she desired. Not as complex as the spells cast by tengu or kitsunes, which came out of nothing. Something Junyuu used as a punchline for most of her jokes. Never bite a sandwich in the company of a tanuki, it might actually be something inedible, gross, or both...
Almost immediately after the snakes appeared--Junyuu was gone!
From landing onto the spikes all the snakes but one burst into smoke. Briefly, it was apparent that they were leaves before they were scattered into little green pieces. Had anyone noticed that the leaves were gone from the area they would've seen through most of it. The one snake however, fell to the ground, having fallen neatly between the spikes, and slithered into the cover of overgrown weeds.

Theordac watched the snake slither into the weeds, more illusion work he thought. He considered using magic to evoke a reaction from the plants but decided it would serve no purpose. He turned his attention to the hairbrush, now this hairbrush could be an illusion over the drum, or the drum itself was the illusion which possessed an interesting situation. If the drum was an illusion then the fur ball of fury had managed to trap herself within her own illusionary object, making her either very forgetful or dumb. Theordac tossed the hairbrush to the ground, and turned his attention to the magic user. “Ever heard the phrase look before you leap?” Theordac asked, his eyes watching the grass.
