A byline in most major newspapers:
SMALL-TOWN GIRL KIDNAPPED; PIKAIA'S CHILDREN SUSPECTED
Humboldt County, Northern California - Two weeks ago, Amanda Wexler, daughter of local sports hero Andrew Wexler, failed to make it to school. She hasn't been seen since, and it was suspected she had run away from home. Now police say that she may have been kidnapped.
Chief of Police Brian Cohen (Far West, Northern California) stated in an interview Monday morning that the Pikaia's Children movement, infamous for its terrorist activities in Southern California, may have had a hand in Amanda's kidnapping. Members of the Wexler family have been slow to come around to the idea, seeing no reason for the Children to show any interest in their daughter and sister.
"She is such a good kid," her brother, Andrew Wexler Jr., was quoted as saying during Cohen's press conference on Monday. "She's my little Mandy. I can't believe she would have gotten involved with those creeps." However, he pleaded sincerely that she, "come back home" and that "[anyone] low enough to kidnap her should let her go right now".
Others are more skeptical, pointing to recent Children-related activity in neighboring Mendecino County. "You don't ever know, with people like that," Amanda's cousin, Jeremy Allegrin, had to say. "They could have taken her just out of spite. She'd said she found some eggs on a beach a few weeks back. Maybe they heard."
[...the article goes on in this vein, citing police reports on the disappearance. Though the national news has yet to verify or pick up this part of the story, some local newspapers have begun criticizing Cohen and implicating the Far West PD in having aided and abetted Amanda's kidnapping.]
