Bah :/ My friend in Pakistan is very upset with me. Because he was telling me about some bombing that killed many civilians and I wasnt emotionally distraught.

I dont know..I do care, but I'm pretty desensitized..This thing happens everyday. And some is shown on the news, some is not. And I really expected to break down and cry every time?

I've noticed if 1) I dont know someone in the accident 2) Someone I love doesnt know someone in the accident ...then i'm not bothered past "OH thats terrible"

Is there something wrong with me?
How would you all react?

Considering that every time you flip on the news, someone has been hurt or injured, I think everyone is fairly desensitized. Would you react differently if it had been a bombing in the UK or France? Maybe Tokyo or Milan? How about the fact that in Africa, people are dying every day from preventable diseases? Or maybe the threat of mosquitoes-born WNV or Mylaria? Earthquakes, droughts, tornado, hurricanes, shark attacks, wars, terrorist attacks, tribal feuds...the daily list of tragedy goes on. How can you be aware of all this and NOT turn a cold shoulder? If you reacted emotionally to everything, you'd spend your life crying.

^ I concur, nowadays, unless you're emotionally involved somehow it's best to be unemotional about what's happening out there, if only for your sanity's sake. We're fairly untouched by the drama, but the news channels always manage to find a kiwi involved so we might care, just that little bit more...it's pathetic really. It doesn't matter what the story's on, if there's a kiwi within a mile of it, they will be hunted down.

I personally am more bothered about animals caught up in our machinations, and natural disasters. Which is why I'm more likely to give my money to WSPA than Unicef, it could be because I'm a felid, but more likely it's because the human world has jaded me so much I'm not sure my money will get anywhere near the people it's supposedly helping.

I'm also told the worst things to be in Sth Africa at the moment are lost and black, especially at the same time.

To quote the movie Sahara, "This is Africa; nobody cares."

Expecting everyone to get emotionally involved in every disaster is unreasonable and impossible. At the same time, the extremes it takes to touch us is pretty pathetic.

I have enough issues caring for stuff that DOES effect me. So yeah. :/ I don't get upset over celebrity deaths either.

Except Gary Gygax. I did shed a tear for His Rolling Highness.

We really should be reacting worse to this... if it wasn't for the sad fact being: we're sick of it... we hear about to often to give it a proper reaction beyond our condoleses and rest in peace to does involved... *sigh* Too much...

The problem is that when something happens enough that it becomes commonplace and 'normal' then generally people stop caring enough to have strong reactions, unless something personal is involved. When I say 'normal' I mean that it occurs so often and frequently that people expect it to happen on a regular basis.

With the news coverage now-a-days and that they have the mentality of 'if its bloody, it leads' then this is what happens. As much as people try to harp on games as "poisoning the minds of children" and desensitizing them to violence, I think the daily news is actually worse at doing that. We can now see video of what happens in some far off corner of the world, where previously you'd be lucky just to hear what happened in another state/providence.

My big question is, has the world gotten more violent or is it that we are just now hearing about it all where we didn't previously?

*sighs* for me, it is , should i care, that religious extremists, fanatics, and such, are killing each other.... or should i care that it might be MY husband they kill next.... i admit a certain ...apathy... towards the issues in the middle east. they won't end, *shrugs* obviously.....Every day, all day all i hear about is death. to be bombarded by images of it, well, yes i turn off that caring.
i wish for nothing more, than peace.....

What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Badness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
*****, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With the ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin'
in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' in the wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

hear hear! *points to the Black Eyed Peas song.* that is the truth right there! same reason i've been listening to that song all year!

anywho, yeah, Cronos, i don't even think it IS a question, and i get what you are saying. that people wanna think this s**t hasn't been happening before, that it's so new... it's just willfull ignorance. but ironically enugh, you cant realy do anything about it if you let yourself get too angry and excited. a clear mind is the only way to handle it, and for that it does require a level of stoicism that does not realy make certain other would-be activists happy to see. it is sad, and we who hold onto our sanity know full well that we understand where those upset people are coming from. but yes, we also know that it isn't that we don't care. it's that we detach ourselves, for whatever reasons. maybe we're leading by example, maybe we're carefully planning, maybe we're just waiting for it to end, or maybe we just want to ignore it and try to live happilly as we can. and is there realy anything wrong with that? i don't think so.
