Autumn was Basket's favorite time of the year, when brown was the most prevalent color all around her. An entire world to match her coloring! The leaves were crunching under her hooves, the wind was rattling through barren branches and the air was getting nippy. Was it any wonder she was prancing through the forest happily, not looking where she was going?

If she had been, the miniature mare might have noticed the full-sized stallion of brown and yellow and the shades in between right in her path. Then again, she might have seen him briefly, only to mistake him for a tree that had yet to loose its leaves. Basket was a carefree individual who could be totally oblivious to that which didn't announce itself to her.

Hard Tack strode through the leaf litter, the long feathered hair upon his hooves catching a stray dry leaf or two and carrying it a few paces before it'd dislodge itself from a tangle of hair and be deposited back upon the ground. His lower legs burnt but this sensation he had become use to, persevering it as normal, the only relief he received was the autumnal wind as it passed through the trees and bit at the open wounds upon his legs. He had walked a long way now, coming from the desert to escape the heat and another possible attack. He ached, beside his wounds, he ached from fatigue, all he desired now was to rest, but first he wanted to sooth his throat with a drink of icy water.

Casting his laser red eyes about him in search of a source of water his eyes took in another sight, a small brown Usdia mare. She seemed to be walking about without a care in the world, if only she knew what trouble that could cause, he of all knew that lesson. He took a deep breath, the sound rasping and not far off a similar noise to that of the dry leaves tumbling about together, agitated by the wind, which caused a series of coughs leaving him feeling even more drained. In a husky voice he addressed petite sized mare, 'You should take better care, wondering about in such a nonchalant manner...' He coughed, expelling breath with a greenish sort of mist to it, 'it could lead you into a lot of trouble...' He coughed again and tossed his head upwards cursing to himself for his ill health and ill fortune.

Basket stopped abruptly as what she'd mistaken for a tree talked to her. Looking again she saw a big Soquili stallion - not a tree at all! How sily of her, to mistake him for such.

She grinned at his words. "But why should I take care, when it just leads to a life of worry and sorrow? It's much more fun this way - you should try it!" the Usdia replied cheerfully, refusing to allow his negativity to darken her demeanor.

"By the way," she added, "my name's Basket! What about you?"

Hard Tack opened his eyes wide with incredulity, first of all the small Usida mare wasn't at all alarmed by his appearance, even the green mist which he had expelled after his coughing fit. Secondly there seemed to be no airs or graces with the way she had announced herself simply stated her name as demanding his in return and finally but most importantly for Hard Tack her reasoning for taking more care was totally flawed, as he well knew from personal experience. He stock shock still for a moment, lost for words as he tried to form all his emotions into something audible.

He looked down at her, the cross hairs of his eyes lining up with her own earthen brown eyes. 'Hello Basket, my name is Hard Tack.' He really didn't know how else to great her, her own greeting had been be very frank it left him little room to work, it was the other statement she had made before giving her name that gave him subject to form a conversation. 'I did try it, hence my warning in the first place little mare. I was as care free and as inquisitive as you are this day and the results were the wounds on my legs that never heal, the discolouration of my hair and the burning sensation and ulceration of my throat that never leaves me.' He took a step closer to her, looming over her menacingly, 'Every breath causes me pain and often takes me into violent coughing fits and I can never seem to get enough air into my lungs. So no, taking care is not a life of sorrow, it allows you to see events that could occur harmful to ones self or to others and therefore allowing you to act in time.'

He stood for a moment longer, holding her stare meaningfully before taking two steps back into a less obtrusive stance. He did not usually lecture strangers, but she had hit a sore spot of his and her nativity annoyed him immensely.

Basket listened to the stranger's odd and complex response with her head tilted as if in deep thought. She'd never met anyone quite like him before. Well, she hadn't met very many people in general, but that was beside the point.

But he was...warning her? How silly. She didn't quite believe him when he said he'd been as carefree as she at one time. This serious, puffing, stallion? No, she couldn't find it in herself to believe it of him.

"That sounds serious," was what she told him, instead of some kind of sarcastic retort. "Maybe you should find a healer or doctor for that. I know there's some unis that might be able to help, and some Soquili healers, and I think maybe among the humans there are some who could help you too!" the little mare told him, grinning. In her experience, the only condition that was notoriously hard to fix was "dead."

Hard's anger rose a little, the little mare just didn't seem to understand what he was implying and just seemed to shrug off his reasoning for showing a little more care. 'Fine!' he thought to himself who was he to suddenly be the one to start looking after everyone else, if they weren't going to listen to him and show him that amount of respect let them get themselves in to trouble, they'd pa the price one day. He glared at the mare and then snorted, the air leaving his nostrils slightly tinged a shade of green and he shook his head slightly at the small burning sensation it caused him.

With the comments of a healer he almost wanted to laugh bitterly but restrained himself knowing full well the coughing fits laughing usually caused him. He focused his red cross hair irises on the petite female and growled at her, 'Serious indeed. Don't you think I've tried those paths?'

Basket blinked in surprise as the stallion's breath tinted the air green. Green was good, right? It was the color of growing things and spring!

"Well, I'm sure I don't know what you've tried since we've only just met!" the usdia mare told the stallion. "Have you gone to such a very lot of people then?" If so, that would be very sad, that so many couldn't help. But it was just a matter of time, right?
