-cue Mortal Kombat theme-
SO! Everyone knows the basics, swords arre sharp, you can cut people with them. arrows are medieval ranged weapons, etc. etc.
I'm here to tell everyone like that "Get your facts straight!"
There are a lot of different types of weapons. I'm not trying to say I know all of them, I just know a lot of them, and a lot about the once I know. If you've got anything that you want added, I'm incredibly thankful to it and will first check if it falls into and of the other categories, and if not, I'll add it.
Now that that's over... let's start with the basics.
Swords, and Arrows.

SWORDS! WE all know then, we all love them (If you don't I'll teach you why you should.)
For starters, Swords do not equal hack and slash. claws are hack and slash, but we'll get to those later.
Swords wave various uses. The original purpose being STABBING. A stab is a quick forward thrust, don't forget it. If you want to stab someone in a rp, please don't say "tries to stab ___ in the chest" Use "thrusts (name of sword or type of sword) at ___'s chest"
Another use is slicing. Slicing is not chopping an arm off, slicing is piercing the skin and muscle. It takes far less strength to slice than to chop. swinging a sword quickly is slicing. if you swing your sword in a roleplay, don't expect an easy fatality unless you have super strength.
Chopping IS a use for specified swords. A thicker, more duracle sword can be used for chopping, nothing thin.
Disclaimer: A KATANA CANNOT BE USED TO CHOP PEOPLE UP INTO TINY LITTLE BITS

ARROWS!
Yes, arrows, the weapon that seems easiest to handle...
Arrows are very usefull for a more mid-ranged projectile. they can't go as far as a bullet can, no matter how strong a person it. The bow itself is a restraint for distance, please realize that. The bow can only bend so far, as well as the string, which isn't supposed to bend.
That's right, the bowstring isn't supposed to bend, but instead the bow itself is, at least, more than the string should.
the bigger the bow the longer the distance, it's not possible to hit a target from miles away, never mind accurately. If your character controls wind it might work... but otherwise it wont.
Another distance factor is the arrow's shape, if it's thin enough, it can go farther and faster, but are the cost of less strength and durability.

Those two are the most popular, well know weapons, so I figured I'd get them out of the way.
next I think I'll do a few of my favorite weapons...
Axes, Daggers, throwing weapons. Claws, and Polearms.

Axes
Axes have a variety of sizes, shapes, and other variations including, my favorite, number of axe heads.
An axe, as everyone should know. usually has one bladed axe head on the outer side, though variations like the war-axe allow them on each side, parallel to each other.
an axe is probably the best chopping weapon, it's size and weight being helpful when it comes to additional force in the attack.
the can also be fairly useful slashing weapons when put in the right hands.
axes can be used in polearms such as the halberd, or even small weapons like the cleaver (if you consider it an axe.)

Daggers
Daggers closely related to swords and knives.
They are used the same as swords, but at closer range and more often as a concealed or back-up weapon. They are most useful when you aim at weak spots in the human body.
That's all there really is to know other than some specific killing methods I've come up with for them... but I'd rather not share those cause I could get in trouble for that kind of thing...

throwing weapons
...these really DON'T need an explaination... but I'll give one anyone. nice an slow for anyone who needs it.
"YOU. TAKE. THESE. AND. THROW. THEM."
more common ones ar kunai and shuriken... but there's also throwing knives and axes, along with other lesser known weapons. most throwing weapons are bladed, but random blunt objects, including rocks, can also be used...

Fist Weapons!
My all time favorite weapon.. Fist weapons!
They are weapons you wear on your hands. There are many forms of fist weapons, ranging from thick, round, blunt objects, to thin, long, sharp claws. They are more mobile forms of most other weapons, and can easily be hidden.
The "claws" mentioned in the swords category fall under this.

Staffs and Polearms
Staffs are pretty much a long pole, often made of wood, used to jab at people and smack them. They are often spun to gain momentum for a stronger attack. They are also often seen with ornaments at the end.
Polearems are bladed weapons attached to the end of a pole, they're used a lot like a staff, but include slicing and slashing along with the jabs.

Now that The stuff I'm obsessed with is out of the way, I'll divide the rest into three categories. Sharp, Blunt, and mixed.
again, if you have an requests, just tell me and I'll see if it falls under ay of the weapon types already included.

SHARP
Scythes
Scythes aren't very complicated really... they are a lot like polearms aand axes, but don't really fall under either of them. They are long poles with a sharp, inward curved blade. They are more of a gardening tool than a weapon, but still strong and sharp enough that they could cause serious damage. They are more of a slicing weapon than anything else, though are also good for stabbing someone who's on the ground.

Mixed
mace
a mace, as many people know, is mostly a club, that is well decorated and sometimes covered in spikes. It's used to beat people, and takes a lot of strength to use well.
flail
a flail is a long pole with a small chain attached to a shorter spiked pole. The shorter pole is spun before being swung at an enemy.

BLUNT
Hammers
Hammers, not the ideal weapon right? wrong! The warhammer, is fairly effective against shields ad armor. The only problem is that it's size and weight cause problems with lifting it and swinging it. It's powerful, but hard to handle.
clubs
clubs are practically a random blunt object used to beat a person to death quickly.
nun-chucks
nun-chucks, a very well known weapon. you hold one, spin the other, and hit things with it. It's pretty much a mini-flail without any spikes.
