The browns and bronzes here do not admire me like they did before. Astarteth grumbled. They were out on one of the lower, grassier ledges closer to the holding pen. The green was taking in the scant sunlight that had broken through some dreary gray clouds. Her front claws dangled over the ledge as her rider sat below her on a smaller ledge. The green's eyes were a murky blue... Happy but not quite happy. And the blues are as silly as those flits you want so much. I do not know why, I am better than any of those creatures.

Kallista chuckled. She was used to her dragon's mood swings which sometimes seemed much more rampant than any human female she knew. The green rider knew that she was just feeling slighted by the larger dragons and though they met regularly with some of the other green riders, Astarteth was born to be admired. "You are indeed the best there is... I simply think that having one of those creatures would make things easier. He or she could go get oil and rags whenever you wanted..."

I like that idea.

"Or our brush, the one with the extra stiff bristles that I used all my marks on." Kallista reminded the short minded dragon. Astarteth could vaguely remember why Kallista did something but the reason behind it or the events that led up to said action never lasted more than a day or so. The young woman ran a hand through her copperish locks and made a noise.

Time for you to groom? You should. Havocath's rider enjoyed looking at you during the Hatching. Astarteth replied smugly. Her rider really did need a mate. Oh! MINE! See that boy over there! Call him over! I want someone to admire me! Immediately, she sat as straight and posed as possible looking the ever model green.

Making a rude noise, Kallista indulged her life mate. After all, it couldn't hurt to become familiar with some of the locals. "Hey you there! Boy! Can you come here please, my dragon wishes to look you over!"

It had been well over three sevendays, perhaps well into two or so months, and Panata was finally allowed to leave the rooms of the healers and go back into the Weyr. While he still had to get checked on now and then to make sure he was cleaning the wounds properly and not allowing them to get overworked he was, for the most part, free to do as he pleased. So what was the first thing he did?

Go outside, of course! He'd been trapped in that room for so long it felt suffocating, staring at the same faces and the same roof over and over without being able to move, and he really wanted a chance to see the sky; he wanted to be able to feel the breezes that had long turned chill since his last time in them. He was bundled up warmly enough, keeping the cold from his wounds which ached with scarring and fresh skin, and he trotted around outside like a Runner learning to move for the first time.

Meisir had joined him, that mess of a Brown firelizard who Panata had seen off and on since the Impression. Meisir had been told to stay away during all the of the times on the sands by Panata, mostly because he didn't want such a small creature getting hurt . . . or somehow ruining his chances of Impressing. Such thoughts now haunted the young man, as perhaps the interferring of his Brown flit would have saved him from the claws of the Blue. . . . .Not likely.

But it didn't matter now, the pair enjoying themselves outside with the little Brown doing dizzying pattern over Panata's head. Every now and then he would let out a little bugle of joy to have his Master with him now, but that bugle stopped the moment a voice crossed to his ears. Someone was calling Panata, and the boy himself turned his head to see who it was.

Me?

He pointed to himself rather dumbly at first before he understood there was no one else around at this time, many at duties or chores, lessons too. Frowning a bit with nerves he made his way over despite the protesting images from Meisir, who chittered his worry quite audibly. The firelizard may not have had an exact idea, but it didn't stop him from feeling fear towards his Master in regards to the larger cousins of his.

"What can I do for you?"

Panata's voice was shaky as he stopped in front of the Rider and her Green, his small hands clutching the sides of his clothing to try and steady his nerves. Meisir landed on his shoulder, eyes yellow with worry.

Oh tell this one to stop being so silly! I am not going to eat him. Astarteth eyes lightened a little bit as she looked him over. The flit was a strange little creature and the green sent soothing thoughts as well as ones to let him know that SHE was in charge. Her tail twitched from side to side as her impatience showed slightly. Really? Doesn't this one know how to show proper respect to a dragon?

Rolling her eyes at her beloved, Kallista turned to the boy and gave him a slight smile. "Astarteth noticed you and wanted you to come over. My name is Kallista, we are transferred from Ista. Pleasure to meet you..."

She left a pause for a moment and then continued on. A few years as a rider had taught her that it was easier to just move along in the conversation and wait for people to catch up. Wishing she did have one of the charming creatures to fetch for her, the green rider continued. "What a handsome fellow! What did you decide to name him? Weren't you at the last hatching?"

A flash and a notice of the bandages and healing wounds. She gave him a solemn nod.

Panata seemed to shrink under Kallista's gaze as the woman's eyes fell upon the bandages that wrapped around his neck. although he hadn't needed to be bandaged that high on his body the healer had done so to prevent the other wrappings from slipping off his torso, claiming that it would also help trap in heat and keep the salves from rubbing off or drying out too quickly.

"My...my name is Panata, and this is my little Brown, Meisir. We're from the Crafthall."

At her question of him being at the last hatching the boy wasn't so sure how he should properly respond. If he said yes there was always a chance she would recognize him as the 'blond deadglow' who was stupid and lucky all at the same time, not dying from being mauled twice. He obviously couldn't say no either, he was old enough to stand and most all in the Weyr stood if they were Weyrbrats, but what could he say or do? Lying wasn't really his thing, and if he waited too long to answer then maybe -

But he would have to think too much harder, for a few moments later a strange feeling of adoration came over his mind. Meisir was looking at the Green dragon before them, loudly voicing his approval over her looks. From what the boy could gather and properly understand it seemed as though his little Brown flit was enamored with this Green down the point of want, and Panata's face flushed as he knew his little partner was probably sending the green dragon all kinds of messages about her looks and his undying devotion towards her.

Oh for the love of her dragon! Kallista sighed inwardly. She was probably the least intimidating of riders. The boy was almost as tall as she was and as for Astarteth. She ignored the bandages and worked on being friendly. Why would he fear dragon riders, anyways?

"Well, Panata. Well met. So you are learning your way around this place as well? It is much bigger than Ista and there are many more hidey holes to lurk. Tell me, have you explored much?" Kallista tried to think about what boys his age might be interested in.

Astarteth looked down at the boy and his brown. The green was pleased with herself and with the little brown who was sending complete thoughts of love and adoration to her. At least the little cousin knows how to show some respect. What about the boy? Why has he not said wonderful things about me?

Kallista coughed slightly trying to turn her chuckle aside. Looking at the boy, she gave him a curious look. "Are you okay? Or are you just the quite type. I must let you know, if you don't say something nice about Astar soon, she may get upset. She loves attention."

"No, no I'm sorry."

Panata bowed his head as soon as he was asked about his silence, slightly flustered over the fact that his thinking to hard had lead to him to appearing rude and uninterested when someone else had started a conversation with him. He needed to think faster and just respond without trying too hard, or else he'd find himself at the wrong end of someone's unhappiness. It was not a good place to be at all for a wounded candidate, in the disfavor of a rider and their dragon.

"I was just trying to think of what to say. I didn't want to come out overly praising your dragon and seem that I was insincere and merely saying whatever you'd like to hear, but I didn't want to only say a few words and seem as though I were uninterested."

He was so glad that he knew how to at least speak politely, perhaps that would help turn away any slight irritation. Meisir was doing a good job of staying the course with his decelerations of love, so there was at least that bit in Panata's favor. He'd even gotten off of Panata's shoulder when the boy bowed, hovering midair with a delight chirrup or two.

"I...I do find your Green to be quite lovely. One of the prettiest I have seen thus far, if not the prettiest over all."

"I can tell you know, Panata that you do not have to worry with me or bite your tongue. I am just a lowly green rider on the totem. Astarteth, however, is Pern's greatest green and she will let you know it. There is nothing you could say, shy of comparing her to her clutch sister, that would upset her. Especially, if green is your favorite color." Kallista tried to smooth over things with the young man before her. She tried to remember what it was like being a candidate trying to stand before a rider.

Kallista. This one is nervous. He will get hurt on the Sands if he does not stand firm. Is that why he is hurt now? Astarteth brought her head down and looked Panata over. She huffed at him, breathing on her rider, the candidate and the little brown who was still crooning his love for her. The little cousin is quite the talker. He lets me know I am lovely. His owner should be the same way.

Patting her dragon on the head since it was so close, Kallista gave her a look of pure love. "She says thank you for the compliment and those coming from your little pet as well. I have heard the creatures are good for fetching. I really should try to get myself one. And don't cringe so. The dragons see a strength in you. Be proud of that strength and stand tall. Or as tall as the bandages will let you."

"Lowly or no, you are still a rider. I must show my respect to you, because it's what you need and deserve."

There was no hesitation in Panata's words that time as he spoke, his face moving up to look Kallista in the eye. His expression sort of gave away the fact that he was still nervous beyond belief, but at least he was holding his own his voice and not bolting away like he wanted to. His whole body tensed the moment warm air rushed over him from the dragon's gentle breath, and while Panata seemed to stand still Meisir lifted from his shoulder and moved closer. His decelerations of adoration and want were still so very clear, and Panata had to reach out and grab his tail before the Brown could even think about trying to land on the dragon.

"I really do admire her coloring. I have not seen many greens before, not this close, even at the hatching. She's quite breathtaking in her size too, is she considered large for a Green?"

He was trying to make conversation and compliments all at the same time.

The youth nowawadays. She wondered if it was because High Reaches was just different from Ista... Her former sandy home seemed so much more laid back or maybe it was because she was getting older. Either way, she merely nodded when he spoke of respect. It made her feel old.

You are no such thing. I am nice and young and slim and so are you. Though you could use some cleaning up. Astarteth reassured her mate. She crooned as Kallista rubbed her head. The little brown is quite the admirer. And the boy is making up for his rudeness.

Kallista stopped to think for a moment. "No. She is about average size for a green though she doesn't think so. Astarteth is a lot sleeker and slimmer than other greens which is good for quick turn arounds in the air. Though we can last the whole flight practice, I think we are both a little tired afterwards."

Stupid browns and bronzes. Think they can outlast anyone. Then why do I fly so much better when it matters most? Astarteth snorted that opinion. The green was not overly fond of the golds either but at least she didn't have to lay eggs or constantly be doing stuff.

"When she hatched, I thought she was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. And I still do. It changes you. It really does but I know many people who are happy and preferred not to Impress. I guess it all depends on who are you in the inside." Kallista gave him a firm nod on this statement.
PostPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 7:06 pm

Panata nodded as he took note over everything that Kallista was saying about her lifemate, down to how she was thinner and generally more maneuverable in the air. That must have meant she was wonderful when they would do their drills, and Panata actually found himself wanting to watch her in flight some time. Meisir seemed to understand and echo that sentiment, the images he flashed out now mostly showing flying dragons swirling through the air and showing off.

He was pretty insistent on it, even getting off and away from Panata. He spun a few times in the air as if to show the Green the proper way to do it, all the while chattering excitedly. Panata could only feel the color flush to his face over the demands his firelizard was making, and he hissed through his teeth for the Brown to calm down and come back over.

"I'm sorry about that, sometimes once he gets an idea into his head he refuses to let go of it. He's really stubborn that way."

"Trust me when I say I understand. Sometimes, Astar gets an idea in her head and refuses to let it go. No amount of coaxing and bribing can change her mind. So I let her be and hope she forgets." Kallista nodded and watched the little brown do amazing mini aerials.

It reminded her of the time her wing participated in doing flight stunts during a gather. She and Astarteth has been picked because of how quickly her green could move and turn.

I do not remember that. But the little brown is clever in his movements. Tell this one he is lucky to have a clever pet. When are you going to scrub me? Or oil me? You said you would.

And just like that, green draconic memory hit its limits. Kallista looked over the boy and realized that he couldn't help with any duties. But he could take note as she talked about how to take proper care of dragons. "Have you had any experience with dragons before besides myself and Astar? She wants me to oil her and I could tell you a thing or two."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:02 am

"Experience with dragons? No, not at all. I've been....staying inside the Weyr mostly since the hatching, not really let out to do anything except take my meals in the hall and go to my barracks every now and then. I had to be watched by the healers in case . . .something were to happen."

Panata didn't push too hard or get to specific on the details, but he was sure a smart woman like Kallista would easily catch on and understand what he was trying to say. Mauled candidates weren't exactly allowed to do as they pleased, not that many of them wanted too. Panata had been told he was lucky to have survived all of that and sometimes he wondered if it really was luck or something else.

"But...if you're going to oil her, I would love to watch. I can never seem to learn enough about dragons, and getting a lesson from a person who actually has one to show on sounds much better than just theory and speculation."

There was a slight giddiness that Panata felt over the chance to watch someone work with their dragon, his nerves over the Green beast lowering themselves to a soft roar. He never had problems with Greens, they were small and friendly, at least that's what he kept chanting to himself.

"Just be careful not to be hobbled like some old runner beast, my lad. Your wounds will heal bit in the meantime, there is one thing you can do and that is to learn everything you can..." Kallista stopped before she went into lecture mode. Her thoughts went back to another time, another hatching... Human lives and dragon life she had seen lost. There was a dull ache inside of her but she shook it off less it affect the here and now.

To oil me, you must leave and I must take you. You did not bring anything to clean me. And this one still amuses me. Or at least his little one does. This one takes himself too seriously. Like you. The green snorted and looked away.

"I just realized that I would have to leave you and take her with me. I left our supplies in our weyr. So maybe, you can ask me questions and I can answer them as Astar doesn't quite want to leave your company yet."
PostPosted: Thu Feb 11, 2010 7:17 am

"If...if you need to go then please don't let me trouble you be making you stay here any longer. I've always been told the needs of the dragon come before anything else and I would really hate to be the cause of discomfort for your Astarteth."

Panata was sincere about not wanting to bother her any further, even stronger since he knew an upset dragon could be harsh with words despite being unable to show their actions. He didn't want to know what it was like to have a grown dragon turn against someone, so perhaps it was in his best interests to let the woman leave to do her own thing. They would meet again later, should it happen.

"It is not like we would be unable to see one another again at a future time if you still wanted to teach me about oils and oiling at that point, so . . . ."

He smiled politely, but over his head Meisir showed signs of protest towards the pair leaving. He did not want to see the Green go!

"Tell you what Panata. How about we go our separate ways for now so that I can take care of Astarteth's hide but we meet up soon and I will give you a lesson in dragon maintenance?" Kallista nodded and gave the brown a friendly wave.

"After all, neither of us is going anywhere anytime soon."
