And yes, you read that correctly. My horse pastured with this sweet old mare named Star. She was old (34 when she died), but you'd never know it from her personality. Anyway, the two of them became inseperable over the three years they knew each other. They even had to have stalls next to each other so she wouldn't freak out. It felt a lot like having two horses. When you dealt with one, you had to deal with the other. They pastured together, went for walks together, and shared his stall when some of the outdoors had to be brought in during bad weather. Star was a gentle sweetheart, and had some of the softest fur/gentlest personality I've ever come across.

Well, Saurday afternoon, I drove up to the barn to say hello to our horse and clean his stall. I was met by the barn owner, who said I might not want to stay long. Star had been put down the night before. When the barn owner went to feed, Star was lying down and couldn't stand anymore. The vet and horse's owner were called and were there quickly, but Star simply couldn't get up. They had to put her down. When I got there, she was lying in her stall, with one of my horse's blankets over her. It was so weird, like a bad dream. o-o When I was leaving, the bulldozer was coming to pick her up so they could bury her. It was only the second time I'd seen dead horses, and I was so close to her. It was so unsettling. And I'm working on a project where I'm focusing on the barn and horses. I'm going to have to keep my composure thinking about the barn, so I don't burst out in tears in school. -Sigh- ..... I almost wish I could've been there to say goodbye to her. I mean, she wasn't my horse, but I loved her. The barn owner did say she looked fairly comfortable when she died, but still....

Oh, I'm sorry. One of my cats died when I was eight, so I can identify.

Keep an eye on the other horse. When one half goes the other usually doesn't take long to follow... We used to have horses, but we had to give them away when I was young. I found out what happened to our pony Stardust about 3 years ago though. When we gave her to a local stable, she found this wonderful horse(it might've been a pony...) named Fred. Because she was so young, her new owners changed her name to Wilma. Well, only that year when my dad took us to find her, Fred had died. Two days later they found her dead in her stall. It's a matter of separation anxiety, as in all animals.

Our horse is doing okay. He definitely misses her (he keeps looking over at her stall, especially during feeding time), but he's eating and acting as normal as possible. He was still nickering at us and bumping me fore treats. The barn owner put a mare in Star's stall so Foxy (our horse) isn't staring at an empty stall, and that seems to be helping. I think our horse will be fine. Before we had him, his owners each sold him every couple years or so. We were at least his sixth owners in his 15-year life at the time, so I think he's sadly used to facing separation. Had he gone before her, though, Star definately would've had problems. She was much more dependent on having him there. I was worried that our horse would be extremely depressed, but he is doing pretty well.

~ Update ~

For anyone who was worried about our horse, he might possibly have a new pasture buddy. The barn owner, as I mentioned, put another mare in Star's old stall so our horse wouldn't be staring at it empty. That was almost a week ago. My mom went up Thursday to clean his stall in preparation for some snow we were going to get. She put him outside in another pasture while she cleaned out the stall, and the mare in Star's old stall had a fit that he was gone. They touched noses through her stall bars when he got back, as if he was telling her to stop worrying. He's still sad, but it looks like he has someone new to befriend. =^-^=

Thanks to everyone who's cared about the situation. It's been hard for my horse and me, and your kindness was appreciated.

Her name's Peekabear. She's a little gray mare. Well, gray in terms of the official name. She's mostly white, with some brown speckled on her legs. She's somewhere between a tall pony and short horse, I dont' know her exact height. She's been at the barn for a while, so I know her fairly well. Actually, she just had a foal this year (he was weaned in the summer)....

She's really sweet. One of those horses that wants everything to be happy, calm, and okay. She gets upset if the other horses get too worked up.

I've had a hamster die on me after only 6 months of ownership -- and I think it was my fault in the end. The type of cage he inhabited wasn't suitable or something because I think the metal was to blame for the sores he developed. In the end, he was euthanized to relieve his pain since I returned home one day, hoping for recovery after I bought the vet's medicines for him, and found him stranded under the water bottle..

..too weak to reach up for a sip.

To make him feel special before going back to the vet one last time, I gave him water, his favorite food (honey nut cheerios), a visit outside to smell the sweet spring breeze, and I kept him bundled up close to me for hours in a washcloth since the vet couldn't immediately fit him in the schedule for euthanasia (which I found to be a bit cruel to him).

Either way, I'm glad to hear your horse is doing better. I wouldn't expect complete recovery from a loss of a friend with him, but by gaining a new friend, it could help to ease the pain a little better. Good luck with the whole situation!

smile Thanks again. I can still get upset about Star if I think too much, but I'm getting better. I don't know about our horse. He was kind of grouchy last week, so we couldn't tell how he was feeling. Oh well. Maybe it's time I stopped thanking people on here.... xd

wow, thats really upsetting to hear T-T. I like horses, my favorites, is the mustang, or pinto [the ones that native americans rode].

Yah its hard loosing a close animal friend. I've lost many, a Doberman named Maggie, A cat named meow meow, and A teddy bear Hamster named Teddy bear crying . I was really close to all these animals, they were apart of me. Teddy bear died of wet tail [a diease], My mom's Ex. BF killed Meow Meow my cat crying . I still dont want to think about that, cuzz it would make me cry, but I just cant stand being around female, cats, cuzz it reminds me of meow meow. crying . Maggie my Doberman Died, of getting hit by a Car, she crawled a couple of blocks, wimpering and whineing to come back and tell my mom and I to help her, she climbed up on the deck and we opened the door, and she cried/whined, and died right there, right on us, and that is hard to remember, because I was so little, and young, and to see my dog die, it was horrible crying , but i Know how it is to loose an animal, the was really close.

~!-i~Love~my~Andrew-!~, that's terrible. >.< I can't remember if I've been around when any of our animals died. We usually find them dead, and my dog was put down while we were out-of-state (which I still feel so bad about).

There is a mustang at our barn. She's a petite little seal point with a cute snip. Her name's Cheyanne. When she came, she was really underweight from being starved by her current owner's ex-boyfried. Now she looks normal, and she's so sweet. I've never actually been around a mustang before. You can tell she's wary; she goes to the back of the stall if you open the door, but she nickers and likes to be talked to and everything. A real sweetheart.
