Anyone who has done work in a grocery store knows where I'm coming from.

Over the summer, I was planning to move out with my best friend and girlfriend. I needed to find a way to get a stable 40 hours a week and a possible "bonus" in money. I applied to become an assistant department manager for Leisure for an overnight position. I got it, and tried it out. It started really screwing with my head, and almost destroyed a year long relationship since I never felt like doing anything more than sleep in my free time. I tried to balance out a social life while working Monday-Friday from 11 PM - 7:30 AM (most days were longer, and I didn't get payed overtime).

I ended up quitting. My health, my mental stability (I'm almost positive I've got some sort of depression problems, and I still need to see a doctor about them) were more of a concern than money was, and I was making 13.92/hour, becoming a total of 450$/week after deductions.

Man, that sucks, sorry to hear about that. Some people just can't do over night jobs, especially with a life outside of work. Sacrificing your personal life isn't worth the money, at least not in my eye it isn't. You should find a new better job, which I'm sure you already are.

Personally, I'm looking for an overnight job, I'd become nocturnal if more places were open 24 hours. I mean an overnight job would be perfect for me since on days where I'm busy I go to sleep around 6:00 Am, sleep till 2:00 Pm, do what I have to do between then and then go to work and get out around 10:00 PM and then hang out with friends or do what I have to for the next eight hours. If I could get an overnight job I'd be happy, I could work 11:00 - 7:00(since every place I've asked say thats the usual shift) and I'd gert to sleep to about 3:00Pm and have the rest of the day to do whatever I want. I'd be perfect. biggrin

I've met old Loblaw Company employees who did it for roughly 6 years and don't have a problem with it. Honestly, it depends on what you're able to handle anyways. My system couldn't adjust to the change at all, and no others around me respected the fact that I needed a lot of sleep while working the night shift. I ended up getting around 10 hours of sleep one day because I had been cut off from proper rest for around 5 days. My days off were often spent surfing the web, and playing video games quietly within my own four walls of my bedroom.

About sacrificing the personal life... I'm always on the road traveling from each end of the city. I live in a government town, and I can tell you it's one amazing but boring task seeing every part of town. There's actually a decent amount to do out here surprisingly, and I sacrificed a lot of that for the overnight shift, and having a chance to start a life on my own (as stated).

I'm happy where I'm at right now. I work at a hobby store that sells a lot of hockey merchandise. I'm not to into the sports, but I love comics, and tcgs. smile

Ah. 3nodding

I usually get about nine or ten hours sleep a night, especially lately, only because I have nothing better to do with my time since a lot of things I used to do were put on hold or ended.

What would those be out of curiosity?

Whenever I work evenings, I tend to get a lot of sleep. Something from 9-11 hours, sometimes 12. biggrin I love my sleep & new job.

What are the things that usually take up my time? well..

My bands last show is Saturday and then we are disbanding, but the good news is I'm happy about it because i was getting tired of that band and now I can focus on the new and better band I'm starting. That used to take up most of my time.

My computer is broken so I can't do the normal things on it that usually takes up my time, like research, making music (especially with my new band that will be taking up a good 75% of my time while on the computer once its fixed), computer art, writing, etc.

Lately I haven't had any money so I haven't really gone anywhere or done anything too interesting.

I stopped sewing recently becuase I needed to focus on other things, like band, and I just haven't picked it back up again yet.

you know, stuff like that.

My days off I usually get about 12 hours of sleep. I love sleep.

Gotcha razz . That's a lot of detail. What kind of music did you guys/do you play?

Being broke sucks =[. I'm in debt a bit of money and I haven't been paid yet.

My band I'm finishing up with is kind of mix between Death and Groove Metal, its not that great of a band. My new band's genre is a little undetermined since we haven't had a practice yet, but it will be along the lines of EBM/Aggrotech/Powernoise/Industrial. 3nodding and on my own time I usually create trance tracks, and such so I might add some of that into the new band aswell.

Being broke does suck. It seems everyones in debt. Luckily I'm not quite in debt, I still live with my parents even though I already graduated high school and I have a pre-paid phone so I don't really have any bills to pay. Though, I have a car that needs fixing, a band that needs funding, a computer that needs fixing, and other things. So it basically feels like im in debt.

Oooh, I'll be sure to check back on the EBM stuff. I love the genre.

The debt isn't actually all that bad, I owe money back to my mom for a canceled gym pass, and a bus pass since payday isn't until November. After that, there's Christmas shopping, a new pair of headphones since mine broke on the way into work today, a new coat for the winter, clothes, etc. Lots of stuff. I need to get a pair of new boots as well, my old combats "disappeared" after I started wearing some steel toes for grocery work. neutral

YOU PEOPLE AND YOUR SLEEP! crying If I'd get 7h of sleep I'd be more than happy! A few weeks back I slept at home for 13h on my brother's bed since he was gone for the night and that was really refreshing after sleeping for 3-5h every night for the previous month.

I could never do a night job, I like to sleep at night. I used to be nocturnal, but the older I've got the earlier I've had to get up for school/work and I've had to get used to early mornings. Currently I'm working at an internship place for this autumn and it's a 7,5h work day 5 days a week + 1h travelling there and another 1h back. Then I go to the gym 3-5 times a week (thanks to my new personal trainer) and I'm dead beat when I get back home in the evenings. D:

I only got 5 hours last night. I ended up staying up until 3:30 talking to David (Gardens of Grief). I love days off. Only thing is I'll probably be waking up to the shriek of a vacuum cleaner tomorrow morning.

I wanted to start going to the gym, but that failed horribly for me. I got my gym membership roughly around the same time I got the night position. I'd be lifting boxes all night, handling an electric jack to move stuff around in a stockroom, and run around with a cart full of magazines stripping them, and then placing new ones up on the shelf. That was a workout at the time, but my diet has been really really poor since I started in grocery. crying

By the sounds of it, the last thing you want to hear is screaming after you get back from work.

I'll be sure to link you when we get music, or perhaps once we have everything together then. 3nodding

I'm always interested in new EBM projects. There's a few good ones from here that never really get any attention, and it's sad. Distorted Memory and DYM are incredibly diverse groups who bring something fresh to the genre.

Yeah. Saturday is coming up soon and I'll be very happy to have some money in my pocket again. heart heart heart I might end up getting a pair of boots.

Theres one near me, called Broken Neck Lullaby, but other then that the EBM scene here is nonexistent.

That'll be good. Boots are handy, I have two pairs.

I've always liked working night jobs. I'm not a morning person though, and by that I mean I can't function before noon, so late is great (for me personally).
