When Aara had initiated a one-sided screaming match regarding his "******** death magic," Sam's first thought had been to make sure the children weren't listening. This wasn't his first thought because his wife's language was particularly colorful, but because Halloween was coming and Yanya and Rhys were too curious for their own good.
"Da," Rhys piped once the argument was over and Sam sat alone in the kitchen. "Can I have magic stuff for Hall'ween?"
It had turned out that Yanya wasn't all that interested in something termed "death magic" after all, so it was only Rhys and Sam who entered the magic shop that afternoon. The store sold loaded dice and disappearing scarves and the like, so there was nothing around that could truly hurt the curious spawn. Plus, there were costumes in the back. One stop shopping for the child who could never have enough useless crap.

Shopping in the city with Shane was always an interesting affair. He said that he hated the hustle and bustle of the place, and so he would plan out a route that he would take that would require the least amount of time in the city and more time back home. Espen was following quickly behind his dad to the next stop on his shopping list when he noticed a magic shop that he was passing by. He caught sight of some of the costumes in the windows and suddenly realized that Halloween was only a few days away.
"Hey dad, wait!" Espen called out as Shane stopped and came back with an impatient and irritated look on his face.
"Can I go in an get a costume? Everyone keeps saying that Hallerween is comin' soon and I wanna go trickrtreating!"
Crap! Halloween, Shane had totally forgotten about it! This was going to be Espen's first and it had totally slipped his mind that they didn't have any costumes. Decorations, sure, they had lots of those but Espen was right, he absolutely needed a costume.
"Okay Espen, you can go in but stay there. I'll come in and meet you in thirty minutes okay?"
"Kay!" Espen said as he opened the door to the magic shop, a door chime sounding as he walked in, then the word "Cooooool!" escaped his mouth as his deep, red eyes darted about the store. The door closed behind him and he was off inspecting the different magical knickknacks that were in glass cases, trying to figure out how exactly they worked.

Rhys scooted around the end of an aisle, his dark skin making him nearly impossible to see under the dim lighting in the shop. He slowed as he approached the cases ahead. There had been several incidents at home over the past few months involving broken glass and even though Sam hadn't been the one to yell about them, the boy thought it was probably best to be careful around the stuff.
Several people milled around nearby, but by far the most interesting to Rhys was a winged boy a bit older than him who also seemed to know how to act around glass. "Can you fly? D'you know 'bout magic stuff?" he asked as he approached, standing on tiptoe and getting fingerprints all over the case closest to Espen.

Espen instinctively shot a hurt glare at the child. He was still upset at himself for not growing a wingspan that was large enough to fly, and he didn't want to admit it either. He wished that he could take it back though, because he knew that it wasn't nice for him to take it out on others. To make it up to the kid, he decided to go on a spree of what he thought each magic trick did.
"Oh yea, lots!" Espen boasted "Y'see that thingy there with the...string? You gotta thinka something thatcha wanna disappear, then you pull the string and it's gone! Then there's that thing with the finger on it...if you push it birds fly out then turn inoo flowers!"

Still curious about the other spawn's wings, Rhys decided to bring that subject up again later. To him, wings meant flying, regardless of their size. He had much to learn about reality, apparently. "Cool!" he said. "D'you got a pet? I'ma ask Da for a bird!" If nothing else, the child was certainly good at going off on tangents.
Hearing his son's excited squeals, Sam turned from where he had been examining a large, clear quartz and followed the sound of Rhys' voice. "Let people shop, Rhys," the man said as he approached, placing a hand on the boy's head and smiling politely at Espen.
"I'm not botherin' nobody," Rhys replied, his voice softer now. He ducked his head in an attempt to shoo his father's hand away.

Espen shrugged and shook his head, not wanting to loose out on all the attention he was getting.
"I'm just lookin'. Dad's got my lowance money." Espen replied to the man who had come up behind them "Rhys can look with me if he wants." Espen gave a small encouraging nod to the boy before going back to look at the display case.

"Yeah, seeee?" Rhys said, successfully dislodging his father's hand. "Wingers and I are just lookin'." He grinned up at Sam and the man smiled back. Wingers? Sam decided to let that one slide.
"All right. I'll be in the back."
As his father wandered off once again, Rhys stood up on his tiptoes and tapped at the display case with his little claws, eyes bright. "There any that make rabbits come outta stuff?"

Once the man was off, Espen tilted his head at the boy and scrunched up his face.
"Wingers? Uh...never had a nickname afore," he wasn't really sure if he liked it either.
Looking at the counter, Espen couldn't see any hats that would fit inside the small cabinets, so his eyes wandered around the store a little bit more before he decided on something.
"Umm...they keep them secret! They don't want people pulling out pet rabbits all over the place or else there'd just be too many." Espen figured that he had to be right, because it sounded right. "But maybe we can find some around here if we keep looking okay? Let's go!"

"'ts just 'cause I dun know your name," Rhys said, grinning. "I dun have to call you Wingers forever."
He listened intently to the boy's explanation as to why there were no rabbit-hats on display. "Yeah! Could you really have too many rabbits though? We should find them!" He pushed back away from the display case, bending his knees and bouncing back and forth on the balls of his feet, ready to follow Espen to bunny town.

"Oh, sorry, name's Espen! An yeah, let's go um..." Espen looked around trying to figure out where one would hide bunnies. Suddenly, his eyes found a very large hat rack peeking out from behind a set of curtains that said "Employees Only" on it. He could read, but Espen wasn't exactly sure what an "employee" was, but figured that if it was special enough, he was one too.
"There!" he pointed and snuck off towards the velvety fabric, towards what he could only hope was a room full of fluffy bunnies.

Rhys followed, his overall darkness and smallness amplifying his ninja abilities somewhat. He couldn't read at all, plus he didn't even notice the sign forbidding them from ducking behind the mysterious curtains in the first place. He trailed behind Espen, waiting to see where the older boy led. Now was the time to pay attention if he wanted to learn to be a real bunny hunter.
