“Ohhhh, this is so quaint!” Vivian Dell’Amore sighed pleasantly, lifting a gloved hand to her cheek. She had never been to a real pumpkin patch before…it felt like something right out of a holiday special! It made her smile from ear to ear. How easily excitable she was and a bit foolish as well. It was warm for the fall season, but she had still decided to dress appropriately with a fur lined coat, gloves, and matching boots. Either she took the extra warmth as to be from excitement or she really was so lacking of physical substance that she needed the extra padding.
Unfortunately, her adopted daughter Melany had been forced to dress similarly. A thick button up coat with tassels and a scarf were her discomfort. Luckily she did have on piece of clothing that was appropriate for the temperature, which was her red and orange skirt, for which she was grateful. She watched her mother’s excitement passively. Apparently it wasn’t shared.
“I rented the whole place out for the day,” Vivian told her daughter with a wide smile, “Hopefully some other children from the liberty center will come…I did invite them. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?”
Wonderful? Melany passed a glance at the great expanse of pumpkin patch, which was really only the size of her bedroom (granted, she had a very large bedroom). It was full of pumpkins, some of which looked anemic while others looked monstrous and misshapen. Bales of hay dotted the area as well and in the corner was a small cart with a sleepy donkey at its helm. No…she wouldn’t say this looked wonderful at all. It looked dirty. And boring.
“Yes Mamma,” she replied complacently, but the lie didn’t reach her face. It didn’t matter; Vivian didn’t pay attention to such things. She was too busy caught up in her own fantasy, regardless of whether it was true or false.

His dad had promised to make a jack-o-lantern with him when he came home that night, after he was done with work. That was only the reason Marc had agreed to come so willingly with his mother to this pumpkin patch - he had to pick out a really big pumpkin so that he and his dad could make the most awesome jack-o-lantern ever! He wasn't really interested in playing with the other kids, or whatever his mom had been on about.
As his mother carried him into the little pumpkin playground, his eyes started to look over all the gourds. Which one would be big enough? He wiggled in his mother's arms, try desperately to get to the ground. "Alright, alright darling," she said with a faint amusement in her voice, setting her unruly toddler on his feet. He was wrapped in a puffy black coat that came nearly to his little knees, with a scarf around his neck and nearly covering half his face, completed with a toboggan. Fiore went to all lengths to make sure he was perfectly safe in all elements - even enough to make him look like a giant marshmallow.
He smiled pleasantly beneath his scarf, though it was likely not seen at all, and began to waddle off towards the closest batch of pumpkins to inspect them. It was only when he had reached them, his mittened hands splayed over the surface, that he heard others speaking. His gaze lifted up to land on the one sight that could ruin this perfect opportunity. "Ugggh, no," he groaned, his breath trapped against his scarf. His little eyes narrowed, and he tried to decide if he could get back to his mother and demand to be taken home before that brat saw him.
He should have known by 'other children' his mother really meant 'the wicked witch of the west'.

"Can't we just go home now?" Donovan's voice sounded particularly sulky as he gave Misae's hand a mild tug. Unfortunately for him, his strength was drained and it didn't even budge his 'babysitter' whatsoever.
In fact, Misae only spared him a glance before motioning at their surrounding, "Oh, come now, it's a wonderful place!" she declared as she placed her free hand on her forehead, shileding her eyes from the sunlight, "I think we should pick out a pumpkin and take it home. Make Melvin carve it up into something scare," then again, she figured that knowing him... Melvin would make a horrid mess and then have a breakdown due to the mess he himself created. The girl couldn't help but chuckle at the mental image.
It was clear, however, that Donovan was not enjoying himself nearly as much as the girl he was practically cowering behind was. He was grumpy, he was feeling horribly sickly due to the sun and it was past supper time by a whole hour, if you asked him. His gaze slid up to glance at Misae, whom was cheerfully smiling at her surroundings and he couldn't help but sigh. Apparently, he was going to have to go through with this, like it or not. Mostly because he rather liked Misae and he didn't want to disappoint her, and partly because he was sure it wouldn't really matter what he said; she was going to drag him there anyhow.
And drag him she did, just a moment later.
With a small groan, Donovan allowed himself to be dragged till they were in the middle of the patch and she let go of his hand, "Why don't you go play with others?" she motioned towards the little girl just a small distance away and then towards a small boy that was also nearby.
Donovan slouched a bit at the idea, shrinking into himself as he looked up at his babysitter. He had no idea how to tell her that he really, REAAAALLY did not like others. Alas, after a moment, he relented. He took one look at Mel, and turned away from her, making his way towards Marc, swiftly deciding he was bound to like her much, much less than the boy.
"Can I just sit here with you and pretend we're playing so my babysitter will leave me alone?" he asked, then paused and took a glance at Mel. From the face the small vampire was making, it was clear he thought Marc was way better 'pretend-friend' material than Mel was.

Cheche was noticeably subdued on this pleasant fall day. The little girl was getting over a cold, her first, and she was milking it for all it was worth. She clutched a stuffed panda close to her chest and didn't even seem to mind that she was wearing a shirt and pants for a change.
"What do you do with pum'kins?" she asked her guardian, releasing her toy with one hand and transferring her grip to Doc's shoulder.
The gray-skinned young man shrugged. "Cut them up and decorate them," he replied. "I did not grow up here, so I was never required to carve produce or dress up for this holiday."
The child wiggled a bit, catching a flash of orange and red out of the corner of her eye. Doc placed her gingerly on the ground and Cheche ambled toward Melany and her skirt. For the moment, the other girl was infinitely more interesting than picking out a pumpkin.
"Thassa nice dress," she said, stopping inches from the bundled up girl. She pointed at Melany's lower half. Doc followed more slowly, stopping along the way to examine some of the nearby pumpkins, but not in any particular hurry to catch up with his charge.

"Now darling, see, there are some other children!" Vivian was thrilled that her little event seemed to be turning out well. She patted Melany on the head and murmured, "I'm going to make sure they have warm cider for us. Nothing is better at this time of year, after all! You have some fun." She left her daughter then to go talk to the pumpkin patch owner, who was in fact unaware that they had been expected to provide refeshments.
Melany let her mother go without protest. Being around her was taxing in more ways than one and it was much too complicated for her to understand. Sometimes, even though she wanted to be with her Momma, it was just easier not to be.
Seeing a familiar face across the patch, the little boy she had been forced to stay with, she wrinkled her nose a little. She then turned away from him quickly with a humph, not wanting to see him. There had to be kids more fun than him here.
Seeing Cheche and receiving a compliment immediately proved her feelings right. She smiled brightly at the truth the girl proclaimed. After all, it was a very pretty dress. "Thanku," she replied, more scripted than sincere. It was so good to see another little girl. Especially when one of the boys happened to be Marc.
"You here to get a pumpkin?" She asked sweetly. Adults liked it when she was sweet, maybe this girl would too.

"Uhh.." came the half-intelligible reply as Marc responded without looking at the other boy. He was more interested, for the moment, in seeing whether or not Mel was going to come and bother him. His brows furrowed a little as he saw the strange little girl (or he assumed it was a girl, he admitted it was hard to tell) wander towards Mel and distract her. He let out a grunt, satisfied that her attention had been averted, and turned to look at whoever it was that had been talking to him.
"Oh," he said at first, his eyes narrowing a little as he looked him over. He seemed a little strange, to be honest. He was pale, and he had weird eyes, and were those claws? Marc simply shrugged and patted a hand against the pumpkin he had been looking at. He had to be better than Mel, right?
"Sure, why not? If I'm with you maybe the witch will leave me alone long enough to find a pumpkin." He pushed at the pumpkin a little, feeling it tilt a bit, and decided it wasn't big enough. "Come on, then, I gotta keep looking." He threw a glance back at the boy before wobbling forward to another patch. "What's your name anywho?"

"Pumkin, pumkin! Kyou-Kyou, I want a pumkin!"
"Alright, alright! I heard you the first time, Saburi, you don't have to scream my ear off!" The irritable adolescent muttered back sorely. This did nothing to deter the excitement of the little cat girl riding up on his shoulders though-- unfortunately for him. He was holding her by the legs (Thank God she was past the "FLOPPY GAME!!!!" stage. Having a toddler throwing herself backwards on your shoulders, or flailing and jumping around on them for that matter, wasn't very much fun. Of course, she'd thought it was a BLAST.) so that she wouldn't pitch over backwards, leaving her hands free to point eagerly at the patch coming into view.
Tahja-- their mother of course, not their godfather's adopted child --and Riiku had some work to do on the house, so since Tessa was too young to handle Saburi that left their older, more experienced big brother Kyou.
I wish I was dead.
Oh, he loved his sisters and all, but damn, Saburi didn't slow down for ANYONE! If she wasn't on his shoulders she'd already be squealing and laughing halfway down the closest row of pumpkins.
"We get one for mommy and Tess-Tess too?"
"Yeah. We get one for mom and Tess-Tess too." He confirmed with a soft sigh.
Why big brother was so cranky she really had no idea, but she figured by being happy he would cheer up too. She could see lots of kids there already, and she was excited to maybe meet someone new. Once they had reached the field she felt Kyou's hands move from her legs to her waist, picking her up from his shoulders and bringing her down to stand on her own. Immediately he caught her hand before she could run off, so she stuck her other hand to her face, thumb in mouth as they neared the others.

Devin loved pumpkins, despite having never seen them before now. He liked the colors, the feel of them, the smell. He even liked the dirt they grew out of. He was just that kind of child; everything fascinated him. He was in that ever amusing stage where something could catch his eye, and he could stare at it for hours before getting bored. Pumpkins were one of these things. The blue skinned toddler seemed prepared for Winter; he was bundled snugly in a hooded jacket, gloves, dark jeans, and for some strange reason, black converse. It looked as if his parents had helped him get dressed this time--he wasn't in his signature clashing colors and wellington boots.
"Pumpkinth!" A bright smile appeared on his face, the white of his teeth contrasting with the navy of his skin. "Daddy, I get pumpkinth!" He looked over his shoulder to look at his father.
Zee wasn't quite so happy to be there as his son was. "One pumpkin," he corrected. "Well, two. If we can get one for Howell." Normally he didn't call his oldest son by his full name, but out in public--it might have been embarassing to be heard calling a toddler 'Howl'. "Why don't you go play, Devi?" He suggested, gently pushing the child forward. "I'm sure you'll make some friends. There's other children your age over there." He gestured in the direction of Marc and Donovan. "Go on," said Zee with a forced smile. He really wished he could have been spending the day with Stasia instead. "I'll pick out Howl's pumpkin, and call you when you can pick yours out."

"A witch?" he allowed himself to look over towards the girl Marc had been glaring at and frowned. She looked kind of posh, but definitely nothing like any witch he'd ever seen in his books. Shrugging it off, however, he returned his attention to Marc just in time to see him wobble off to another patch.
Instantly Donovan decided this had not been a good idea. He really didn't feel like moving. In fact, now that Misae wasn't dragging him around and he was forced to walk on his own, he was feeling mildly seasick. Which was pathetic, given the fact he was in pumpkin patch and thus... nowhere near the sea. A grunt was all the answer Marc got at first, but upon thinking twice over his options, the vampire decided he was still probably better off with the boy than the so called 'witch', not to mentioned the other girl that had joined her, "Donovan," he murmured as he strolled over to Marc, placing his foot against a random pumpkin, "You can call me Don. That's fine too. What about you?" shoving with force, he tried to move it, and failed; he really had no strength like this, and it was making him both sulky and pissy, "I don't like this place. Why do you want a pumpkin anyhow?"
Melvin hadn't paused to explain what Halloween was, and Misae... well, Misae was a sweetheart, but Donovan rarely understood her when she tried to explain things. She tended to ramble on and on and it was hard to connect the dots and follow her.

"Mmm hmm," Cheche replied with a nod. "Dun know what to do with a pum'kin, but Doc says so." Well, this girl was as nice as her skirt! "We gotta dress up too. I'm gonna have wings and stuff." She rocked in place for a moment, taking a quick look at the boys and other girl that had shown up when she hadn't been paying attention. Interesting. Having never attended daycare or anything similar, Cheche had only ever seen so many kids her size in one place one time before. She abruptly held her panda in the air, as if advertising a Blue Light Special of fun in her section of the patch, before dropping it in the dirt and placing clawed hands on a nearby pumpkin. "What're you gonna do with yours?"

Marc didn't slow down to wait for the other, figuring that if he wanted to be a good pretend-friend, then he'd follow along with whatever Marc was doing. As far as he was concerned, the sooner he found his pumpkin and got out, the less chance he had of bumping into Mel and actually having to interact with her. He paused at another pumpkin, pushing on it with his little arms, and realizing it didn't move very much. That's when his attention was distracted by other random murmurings.
His gaze shifted to the others that were arriving, one of whom he saw was already tottering in their direction. He saw the girl as well, who was walking with what looked to be an older sibling, but he sure wasn't going to go out of his way to talk to her. So he simply raised his hand and waved to Devin, figuring it was polite, like his mom would want, then turned his attention back to pumpkin picking and Don. If the boy wanted to talk to them, he'd come over.
"I'm Marcello," he said with a shrug, "but just Marc is fine." He reached out with his arms to try and encircle the pumpkin, finding that he couldn't get anywhere close enough to doing so. "What do you mean? You make a jack-o-lantern." He turned a frowned face towards Donovan, leaning on the pumpkin he had chosen and staring at him. "Didn't your parents tell you about Halloween and costumes and jack-o-lanterns?"

The longer Melany looked at Cheche the more she realized that the girl was...weird. Weird wasn't even a good enough word. Blinded by a compliment and a desire to not interact with the annoying boy across the patch she had temporarily let it go unnoticed but now...it was impossible. She was very very ugly. While Melany wouldn't say that allowed, it was very hard not to think it. The girl looked like some of her fathers favorite statues outside the house, all of which were of weird mangled creaures with wings and fangs. Gargolyes, he said. Cultural, he said. Ugly, she thought.
She kept up the sweetness to the best of her ability. Sure this girl was ugly, but she wasn't as annoying as Marc. Anything but Marc. "That sounds pretty. I'm going to be a princess for Halloween...and Momma said we're going to have Richardo carve out our pumpkin to make it a lanturn." Richardo was, of course, one of the serving men. Daddy was too busy to do such things.
She saw another girl arrive, this one pretty in contrast, but still very weird. But that was ok, still better than a certain boy. So Melany waved the girl to come over if she wished, just like Mommy did with all her friends at parties.

"I think you'll like this." Gustav Bainbridge told his charge with only the merest sense of desperation in his voice. Surely introducing Ariel to other children her age could only help.
Ariel smiled up at Gustav, her blank pupilless eyes glowing faintly. She seemed happy enough to be at the pumpkin patch, and that was promising. "Of course, mister B." She sang out in her childish voice. No matter how he implored her, he couldn't make her call him anything but Mister B. Sometimes she called him Bubbles, a fact that completely baffled the old man.
The little girl looked around, taking in the scene. The pumpkins and the other children talking and squabbling. It was hard to tell what she was actually looking at, but whatever it was seemed to please her. "What do we do, mister B?"
"Well, we'll get some pumpkins and then take them home and carve them up."
At this, Ariel's eyes seemed to glow brighter. The thought of carving up a pumpkin was terribly appealing to the oddly morbid child. "I'd better go pick out a good one, then." She said, smiling cheerily and skipping off to inspect potential offerings.

Devin caught Marc's wave and waved back with a bright smile. He was young enough to be oblivious to the fact that Marc might have just been being polite. Devin was at that carefree stage where he assumed everyone was his friend. And so, he made his way over to the two boys, with that sunny smile of his. He reached the two boys, with a great deal of stumbling and giggling. The pumpkins seemed to be getting in his way.
He smiled at each of them. "I Devi," he told them. "What your nameth?" At least he was remembering his manners, though he didn't have the air of politeness that he was obviously trying for. He waved in Ariel's direction, he'd lost interest already, as toddlers were prone to doing. "Hi!" He cried, before looking back at Marc and Donovan. "Nithe eyeth," he complimented Donovan with a nod. They were a pretty color. Of course, Devin was of the opinion that gold was a prettier color by far, but it would have been rude to point that out. And Devin, he always tried to be nice.
"You gonna get pumpkinth?" He asked, with a slight tilt of his head. "My Daddy gonna get me an' Howl good pumpkinth. Round oneth."
Zee was walking around, glancing towards his son every now and then. Good, Devin had found children to play with. He wouldn't get into too much trouble then, that was a relief. He tore his eyes away from the toddler, and went back to looking at the pumpkins. Howl would want a 'perfect' pumpkin. Everything about Howl had to be perfect. Since the older of his sons wasn't here to help him decide which pumpkin was 'perfect', he was on his own. Yikes.

It was Vera's last day off before Halloween, or as she called it, the week from Hell. There were few times she hated being a cop, but all the mischief during the last week of October made it one of those times. So she was determined to have fun, even if it killed her.
"See, look at all the kids," she said cheerfully. "How about you two go and make friends while I talk to the grown-ups about taking a pumpkin or two home with us?" Without waiting for an answer she wandered away, fingers crossed that pumpkins weren't terribly expensive.
Nazrin was a bit upset to see Mommy go away, and squeezed Will's hand tightly. Not because of the chill, since she was wearing her dark green dress and new purple coat. It was the crowd. There were so many kids, she wasn't sure what to do or who to talk to, so she stayed with the one she knew.
Will, on the other hand, was practically pulling out of his blue jacket in his haste to get somewhere. He'd never seen such cool looking kids before. Mommy was pretty cool, but there was a kid who was brown all over, and one who was blue, and one with shining eyes! "C'mon, Rina," he whined. "Let's go see."
"Okay," Nazrin said softly, and allowed herself to be dragged over to where some other kids were, giving shy nods and smiles to others she passed.
