don't they ask you when you join why you want to join?? i know a few ppl who r joining to die on the front line so they can say they didn't commit suicide. will the recruiter let you in if that is the reason??
PostPosted: Sat Oct 24, 2009 5:40 pm

Thats a ******** ridiculous reason to join. And if they admit that reason to join then of course they will be denied entry into the service.

Its faster to just sit on a train track and get hit by a train rather than waste months in basic training, then months training to go overseas to get hit by a well placed IED.

Such a waste of money training.

They will deem you mentally unstable if you even have a HINT of suicidal tendencies before joining.

Okay personal story, a few years ago I was in a deep state of depression, wrote a suicide note, nearly shot myself in the head while I was on active duty. I was able to work through it and never mentioned the fact to anyone in my chain of command. I'm still in the service and I'm fine but it could have went the other way easily. Having suicidal thoughts are not uncommon sadly and only you know if it will affect your time in service if you choose to join.

As far as I know the military never checked my person medical records before I joined. So if you know your out of your depression and don't find it an issue then you will be fine. 3nodding But if not being away from your family for such long periods of time can be very isolating and will aggravate that feeling and its just not worth it.

"One suicide is one to many" (anyone who been on deployments will know that quote from the countless 'Death By Powerpoint' classes we take). XD

Which is why you never mention having even gone to a shrink....

If you don't have those thoughts at the time of joining, ie they're not the reason you're joining, there's no reason to let your past impede you and spoonfeed them information like that. I don't know very many people who have never hit that rock bottom in their life, the military is looking for people who are mentally stable at the time of enlistment, they'll deal with whatever problems develop as they come. They need bodies.

Ugh, that's not just for the deployed. In the past year I've been in over a dozen sexual harassment and suicide briefings. More suicide briefings than sexual harassment briefings because right after the annual one with the unit, I got one in ROTC, and then someone in my unit killed himself so I got two more. -eye twitch- I can teach that briefing at this point.

but you know that just means that one of these days you will have to give that briefing to someone. and the reason i am comfortable about mentioning my shrink on here is i bet non of you would even be able to tell it was me if you ever meet me in person.
