Vreni Island

User Image

Considered the cultural centre of Corellia, Vreni Island has a small settlement boasting many outdoor theaters and concert halls. Due to this, its population is made up of artisans and entertainers, meaning they are a very peaceful people, not liking a military presence in their settlement. Due to this, many citizens of the Galaxy who are not aligned with either the New Republic or the Imperials have taken up residence here. Of course, many of the Galaxy's less civilised citizens have also taken a liking to Vreni Island because of its lack of a proper security force. Many hire themselves out to visiting wealthy men as protection against the small amount of crime that does exist. Others use the constant flow of people as vital access to information. Of course, so as to not arouse suspicion, almost all have kept to the peaceful lifestyle.

Surrounded by beaches and thick forests, it is a difficult area to defend, so the New Republic has not sent troops, leaving its fate against the Imperials in the hands of the locals. The Imperials have a keen interest in area, as capturing this cultural symbol would be damaging to New Republic moral, as well as give them access to the numerous mercenaries that take residence here.

"Perfect", she thought as the airship landed on Vreni Island. She had been saving up her credits for quite some time since she had heared about this place. Cultural, whatever that meant, sounded rich. And rich was good. Why? Because she loved rich people. They usually had an interesting amount of credits with them. Credits she could use to sustain her own life.
As soon as she had the credits, Kayla had bought herself a single ticket from Nar Shadaa to Vreni Island. The ticketseller didn't look too satisfied selling a ticket to a young girl as her, but she could care less about that. There were credits to be gathered, and no protection to be paid.

Stepping out of the airship, along with a huge amount of tourists and traders, she sniffed the air of the Island and took a good look around. As was to be expected, a lot more people walked around towards the few theaters and artisans she could see.

"Quite a lot of mercs. Barely any guards. Lovely", she analyzed. "But first, let's check for a good hiding place. This isn't quite like Nar Shadaa."

Fifteen, small and slender. She was young, often mistaken for an even younger girl. Some - to her opinion just blind people - even mistook her for a boy, but she loved to taste some alcohol once a while. Putting that aside, inns were always a good spot to start gathering some information.

"Landing zone is clear... We have touchdown."

The landing struts of the YU-410 freighter hissed their serpents call as the weight of the kilo-ton ship met with the forces of gravity. From below its head lowered a small ramp, exposing the durasteel legs of the mercenary "Omikias." "Why the hell do these wars always take place on such nice worlds, huh Visko?" he asked jokingly to the remote droid floating at his side. A series of beeps and bloops met him with his answer, making the large gentleman chuckle. "Ah, you always were one to point out the faults in these organics, Visko. Still, beats working! Ahahaha!" The artificial lips of the HRD curved into a smile as Omikias stepped down the passenger ramp, petting VS-K0 like a floating pet. "Beachside real-estate is always so hard to come by... Well, first come first serve. Got the tactical point at least." He looked down the beachhead and noticed the city. His eyes zoomed in and studied the locals from a distance. "No soldato's, but hardly any cops either... Good pick, Visko." His eyes unzoomed from the city and he began walking.

At a first quick view, it didn't look like Vreni Island had as many hiding places, small streets or mazes of crowd like Nar Shadaa had. Swearing silently, Kayla realised finding a good spot would be harder than she expected. Who knows, if it kept going on like this, she'd even have to 'buy' herself a house just to have some shelter.
She shook her head. That wasn't what she wanted. People always expected that someone returned to their house sooner or later and people with houses were rather inclined to do so as well. No, no. She wouldn't have her own house. She was a girl from the streets and the streets would be her 'home'.

Passing a bar, she halted and looked at it. There was a bouncer in front of the door, the bar looked simple. Simple, as to say, not like those in Nar Shadaa at all. Yet she still considered it to be the better place to find information and deals. If she wanted to live in the streets, she was supposed to know who to look out for after all.
As she tried to take a peek inside, the bouncer blocked her view.

"No children allowed inside."

Pulling her cloak a bit, she looked up at him. Well... he was taller than her, that was sure. His face showed a few signs of age, and he didn't look all too tough, but Kayla had learned not to judge people's skills on looks alone.

"Jus' wanted to take a peek. See if there's 'nything interesting to see."

"There is nothing to be seen, since you're not allowed inside. So why would you care?"
" 'cause my father might be in there?"

((Just quick note, felt like adding Dark Blue color))
The lay of the land for the old mercenary felt like a mining colony he once visited on the Outer Rim; simple, yet off-key. Didn't feel a thing like Nar Shadda, homeworld of several key contractors in his line of work and home of his mechanically-inclined "brother" Rylos. Didn't help the planet also gave him a vibe he wasn't used to working around: " Peaceful," he said openly as he walked past an elderly couple.
His optic sensors soon showed him the visage of peace was just a cover; bouncers guarding clubs, mercenary soldiers disguised as businessmen, and bounty hunters sipping coffee daintly. " The greatest evils are the ones who hide in plain sight... Did no one learn from politics..?" Omikias continued down the road, adjusting his jacket over his weapons until he heard a 'unique' voice of a young woman. An argument between her and the bouncer of Club Mirror echoed lightly down the alleyways.
"Excuse me, Lady Midolla," he called towards the girl, knowing fully well he could be creating a problem; "But through problems, solutions must be found, and every solution has a price," he mused in his mind as he jogged forward. " Milady Midolla, I am glad I have found you... Is this... Organic causing you a problem?"

"Kael, I need you to go with Karol to pick up a shipment of materials," Quinn orders to a young man sitting in the back of his shop, "alright, which dock?" Kael rises to his feet, sheathing his split hachette at his hip with a sash, the artisan looks back at him, "same one as always. Hurry up, Karol's waiting outside."

Strolling out into the open streets, a gust of wind greets Kael as he catches up with his fellow assistant. "This place has been getting livelier lately," Karol says, looking around at the newer faces that made their ways around the growing town. "It feels odd as more come, the war has brought an unusual feeling to this place," Kael notes.

As the two make their way towards the docks, Kael spots something that grabs his attention, something new, an apparently mechanized being with a small concentration of the force within its body. "Interesting..." he mutters as he draws closer, his curiosity piqued he decides to take a closer look, ignoring all else around him, he approaches the android.

The modified attack freighter Atiniir landed at an out of the way dock. A 7 1/2 foot tall Mandalorian with thick fur covering his arms and legs stepped off the loading ramp. He entered a code into one gauntlet, and the ship sealed up tight. With his sabres on his hips, spare ammo on his belt, grenades on his bandolier, and his oversized rotary blaster on his back; he headed into town.

"Your father might be in there. Right."
"I would know if I could take a look..."
"Excuse me, Lady Midolla"
"And I know you won't have a look"
"Milady Midolla, I am glad I have found you... Is this... Organic causing you a problem?"

Kayla didn't pay attention to the words until a man, a merc by his looks, arrived with next to him a floating droid. As she turned around to check who arrived, she noticed he was talking to her from the way she had his attention. If she was a 'milady' then 'her parents' had defenatly taken the wrong guy to play 'the butler'. Nontheless, she smirked slightly. This could be fun if things worked out.

"Garr... Did my mother send you again? Why can't she just let me see my father?"

The bouncer eyed the man and the little droid, suddenly not all too sure about himself. The girl didn't exactly look like a milady to him. She looked more like a vagabond or someone who could perfectly describe Nar Shaddaa just by the looks.

"You ... know this girl?"

"Indeed so. She is my charge so long as she is off-world from he mother, Lt. Nathoria of the Imperial Navy. She hired me as a free-contract in exchange for a reduced prison sentence; that includes any crimes committed to keep my charge, Lady Midolla, safe from harm. Now, if we cannot settle this... Peacefully... Omikias opened his jacket slowly, revealing the shining silver-and-onyx grips of the twin .48-calibur Enforcer pistols. "We can always re-negotiate." He kept his opaque blue eyes locked on the bouncer, planning his non-lethal targets on his body.

"Now, now. I'm sure this mister doesn't need to be intimidated that bad, Garr. Right?", she chuckled as she turned to face the bouncer.
"Uuh... well... heh. I guess you're free to enter, then. Just don't let me catch you alone again."
"Thank youuu", she replied all girly and dragged 'Garr' inside the bar. The bouncer took a quick look at them entering, then quickly tend to his own business again. Kayla, on the other hand, looked for an empty table and took place. Now that she was inside, she didn't care much about the mercenary anymore. However, life on Nar Shaddaa had learned her not to be ungrateful.

"So, 'Garr', I guess I should thank you for your help out 'ere. 'Twas a fun piece of theater. Where did you learn to be tha' good?"

"Every stage actor as his secrets, Lady Midolla," he said, smirking. "Never thought I'd see the day when I'd actually save an organic out of my own common kidney... Or was it liver? You organics have too many organs for me to remember; easier just to cut you down than make small-talk. I'll have to keep a running tab for you, being a damsel in distress. Could make a shiney chit or two from you..." Again he smirked and let out a small laugh as the cyborg made his way to the bar.
"Angelo Meridian wants a tall kniod." The bartender looked at him quizzically, checked left and then right, before leaning forward with an empty glass with a piece of filmsiplast inside. "Here's your kniod, Sir. If you'd like another, you'll need to get my heater workin'; too cold in here." The barkeep moved himself down the line and took orders from another person.

"Save 'n organic...? You make it sound like you're 'nother species."

She thought about his words. As to be expected... one 'saves' a damsel in distress and expects to get paid for it, even if she didn't ask for his help in the first place. Perhaps this place was similar to Nar Shaddaa but under a cloak of Culture?

"Alrighty then.", she leaned backward in her seat. "You want some protection money for savin' this damsel huh? Tell me first what you know 'bout this place."

She realised the cyborg had left without a word to go to the bar. A bartender shiftly gave the cyborg a kniod before carrying on. At the same time, she ordered herself a drink. When the bartender looked cautious at her, she pointed at 'Garr', which seemed to satisfy the bartender's alertness. Herself, she had learned to tend to her own bussiness. Whatever the cyborg was asking for, she didn't care. She wanted to know the people here. Where to get things done and get easy money, while alltogether having a reliable source of protection. Being a girl alone wasn't easy, but she hadn't much to fear since she was small.

Omikias fished the flimisplast out of the glass and slipped it into his pocket, next to the spare magazine of ammunition. He then turned and strolled down to "Midolla," and rested a hand on her shoulder. "You want to talk, we do so elsewhere; my business here is done. We can talk contracts and credits aboard my ship, but I advise we leave quickly, quietly, and now. That is, unless you have a blaster hidden somewhere on your person..."
PostPosted: Sun Oct 25, 2009 10:46 am

Aboard a ship? Right. This was getting fishy, if you asked her.

"Fine, Garr.", she stood up and shrugged her shoulders. "But a little girl like me doesn't have a blaster hidden."

Not that she was defendless. She was a rogue. She had lived alone for years, relying mainly on herself, her dagger and hiding skills. She could vanish from her hunters in plain sight or turn the roles and hunt them down when least expected. Her dagger had tasted blood and life before. But that was on Nar Shaddaa.

Without protest, she let the cyborg guide her. Whatever he had done at the bar, it sounded like it would trigger a fight of sorts. Kayla chuckled inwardly. Garr sure was entertaining.

"Do me a small favor, little one," the cyborg said as the pair stepped outside. From his jacket, he drew the flimisplast sheet, blank of all writing, and put it in her hand. "Take this to the end of the sea-docks. There should be a man with a black and blue hat on. When you see him, tug on his jacket and say, 'I need some parts for my thermal inductor.' Show him the flimisplast and let him..." Omikias looked up and saw a pair of "old friends;" bounty hunters sent by a previous client. "Go. I'll catch up with you. Find help if you can. Just don't hire anyone."
