Thats right folks, I'm back! *waits for groans to subside* xd
After a prolonged absence caused by the new college year starting, i finally have a chance to get back to gaia.

anyways, over summer, i went to the town of Ironbridge, in lovely Coalbrookedale, itself in Telford (being a UK citizen, getting there is an hour and a half drive! Whoooo!). which is considered to be the real starting point of the Industrial Revolution.

::HISTORY OF THE IRONBRIDGE::
"The world's first cast iron bridge was built over the River Severn at Coalbrookdale in 1779. Not only iron founders and industrial spies flocked to see this wondrous bridge, but also artists and travellers. The Bridge had a far reaching impact: on local society and the economy, on bridge design and on the use of cast iron in building. The story of the bridge's conservation begins in 1784 with reports of cracks in the Southern abutments, and is brought up to date with the English Heritage sponsored work of 1999."

so now that you guys understand the significance of the bridges creation, onto the photo's!

The bridge itself. see that really dark building at the far end of the bridge, mostly cut off the photo? that was my hotel. my room overlooked the bridge itself, it was awesome. note that this image is not one of mine, but a good overview found on Google.

::MY PHOTOS::
Feel free to use these for whatever you wish, although it would be appreciated if you credited me, Robert Bloomer (In some cases, such as college projects or professional work, it will probably be necessary to do so)
with the formalities over, heres the snaps!

Blists Hill Victorian Town - There is an entire fake victorian town, built from rescued victorian buildings around from around the country. will explain more in next post:

(thats my sis in the last photo, outside the ironmongers (which unfortunatly was only just being added to the town, so the scaffold kinda ruined the whole effect...)(also, trust me to be the only one to dress for the occasion, i had a shirt, waistcoat, and smart, pressed trousers... which is probably why i ended up involved in far more of the roleplaying stuff than anyone else, and also why i got asked for directions so much sweatdrop )

Other Random Stuff - Findings in the museums, the worlds first working steam engine, etc:

There are far more photos than this, but these were the only ones i took with my camera phone (yes, i did take all of these, including the difficult looking shots of the bridge, haha (there was a fishing platform, and a path through the woods, so the "sitting on water" and "high in a tree" shots were quite easy (getting to them was the hard part! haha)
I will have a rummage through my parents photos and those on the digital camera to find more good snaps to add

Blists Hill victorian town:

Blists Hill Victorian Town was possibly more awesome than the bridge itself!

set a couple miles from the bridge, the town is 1 part history, 1 part roleplay, and 1 part pure awesome!

the town is made up of rescued victorian buildings from across britain, which were set to be demolished for multistory car parks, etc. they have been cleverly aranged to form 1 complete victorian town, featuring it's own school at the bottom of the town(with a damned strict schoolmaster! he theatened to cane me because i was being disruptive (instead, i had to stay after class and fill a blackboard with "I will respect my elders" while having a chat with the guy who played the schoolmaster about the heritage and the town)). near the school is a victorian fun fair, with a rescued and restored (and fully working) carousel, and some other games, like a can shy (i won a harmonica!)
uphill from those, there is a blacksmiths, near the town mine (a real victorian mine, with a working crane (one of the photos in the 1st post, in the victorian town section, is of the crane, and another has the mine carts next to it)
further uphill from there is the town itself, with real shops (fancy buying a victorian bonnet? or getting real victorian fish and chips (cooked in real fat, not the crap we get these days!) and a restored pub from wolverhampton (later on, the town policeman and the schoolmaster dressed down to waistcoats and trousers, and sung various songs while on the piano here! i got to join in with "the girl on the flying trapeze" among others whilst drinking a tankard of ginger ale!
"She Swings through the air with the greatest of ease! the pretty young girl on the flying trapeze!"
other features of the town were a victorian butchers ("Ew! those pigs are on hooks!" says my sister as we go in), a Victorian Press and Typographers, Photographers, and a "Druggists" which sold real victorian remedies

also, the roleplaying went so far as to a pair of teenage girls working there sitting in the town park knitting on there breaks, whilst I, clad in my waistcoat and shirt, attempted to chat them up in victorian english, which went suprisingly well! (it's great being 17 and into victorian england and steampunk! although my dad wouldnt let me wear my Mono-Goggle outside the hotel when he found out i had brought it with me...)

Also, if anyone has the time, this site has a whole wide range of other photos of Blists Hill victorian town: http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Shropshire/Ironbridge/Blists_Hill_Victorian_Town_Museum/pictures
and this is an example of the merriment in the pub, if i remember right, these two guys were the Carpenter and Fish Shoppe owner, although i sang with the School Master and the Bobby (policeman)

all in all, if you ever want to do a holiday for 3-4 days in england, i would heartily recommend a visit to Ironbridge, in Telford, including a day visit to Blists Hill. it is one of the best weeks out i have had in a LONG time
